GOOGLE RANKINGS

Hi, does anyone have any experience in getting websites ranked in google/yahoo etc. I have built a website for my daughters skating club using url of: www.nlfsc.com but this does not get ranked in google.
The site is held on the mobile me server.
I have read about 'meta tags' etc but have no idea what to do to add them. My DNR bounces the url to the mobile me server, and I have noted that the individual page titles as built in iWeb (welcome, about us, committee news etc) do not appear in the top url bar when the site is opened. If I change the option at the DNR admin page from "keep title in url" then I get the full apple address, i.e web.me.com/johnmacinnes1/nlfsc.com in the title bar. What I had expected was nlfsc/welcome for the home page and so on.
Any advice gratefully appreciated.
Thanks in anticipation.

There is a difference between ranking high in Google and being indexed by Google (ie having you website being added to Google's database). Being indexed by Google is easy. All you have to do is create an XML Sitemap and submit it to Google. You can optionally get a few incoming links from third party websites as well which will speed this process up.
If you want your website to rank high in Google for particular keywords you need to optimize your website properly for this keywords. This includes putting your keywords in your page Title and in your page content. See the SEO For iWeb article to learn what you need to do to get your website optimized for high search engine rankings.
First determine the keywords you want to rank high for in search engines and then start adding them to your webpage content.
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

  • Does Having a .Mac Address Affect Google Rankings?

I have a fairly new iWeb-generated website that was started around May 1. I wrote an article on my site about a new hostess for a poker TV show (I'm a poker reporter), and my page has sustained a #3 ranking on Google for about a month. (The article has received over 8,000 hits over five weeks.)
A friend tells me that it's unheard of for a new site like mine to rank so highly on Google, and insists that it's only because my core domain is ".Mac". Either Apple is specifically "pushing" or "accelerating" my page to Google, or Google is weighing me more highly because I benefit from .Mac's high Alexa ranking.
So my question is this: Does Google rank my pages differently because the domain is Mac.com and not (for example) PokerReporterBJ.com?
Also, does Apple do anything to "push" or "accelerate" its member pages to search engines like Google? I believe that having a .Mac address might put me on Google's "radar" faster (meaning I'll show up SOMEWHERE in the rankings), but I don't believe it affects the actual page rank.
Does anyone know anything about this?
Here's the link to my main page:
    http://web.mac.com/bjnemeth
And a link to the specific article:

Thanks for the responses, everyone. I think I agree with all of you.
However, I did find one source saying your domain can affect Google rankings. Here's the link:
    http://www.searchenginepromotionhelp.com/m/articles/site-content-design/google-d omain-names.php
However, the point of this article is that Google tracks domains and domain-hosting services for a history of spamming, giving less weight to historical spammers.
So Google may punish your ranking if you're with a disreputable hosting service, but they won't reward you just because you're with dotMac or another major domain. It just puts you on an even playing field with the rest of the Internet. (Which is as it should be.)
Like I said, thanks for the responses!

  • Uh oh. Google confirms it's giving HTTPS sites higher search rankings. What do we do?

This recent change in the Google algorithm is bad for our clients because BC's solution for HTTPS requires the use of https://companyname.worldsecuresystems.com – which my clients would NEVER want to make their default URL.
So BC, what's your next move? If we can't install our own SSL certs, our clients will be penalised by Google.
That will make start to make BC harder to sell, especially to those who value their Google rankings.

    Hi there Matt,
There are several threads here and on Linked in about this already.
I will quote one of the key things Google said that people have glossed over or omitted:
"For now it's only a very lightweight signal - affecting fewer than 1% of global queries, and carrying less weight than other signals such as high-quality content - while we give webmasters time to switch to HTTPS," Google's Zineb Ait Bahajji and Gary Illyes said in the blog post.
"But over time, we may decide to strengthen it, because we'd like to encourage all website owners to switch from HTTP to HTTPS to keep everyone safe on the web."
So right now - Its not a factor that will ruin your ranking.
Note how the quote has words like "MAY" decide etc.

  • SEO Page Speed insights (Google)

    Hi All,
    Disclaimer: I'm not a coder.
I'm aware the Muse team are always imporving SEO compatability for the code output from Muse.
Recently Google have made availible various development tools to let us admins test our site's performances in relation to Google rankings and search optimisation.
I've been experimenting with these tools on a Muse site I have made in the last 6 months and it returns several errors, which have JS script issues, HTML issues - Particually on mobile.
    Links to tools:
    https://developers.google.com/speed/docs/insights/about
Page Speed insights tool seems to not regconise the Mobile Optimised layout of the Muse site, but instead shows a preview of the desktop version, even though when navigated to on a mobile device, the mobile optimised layout loads fine. URL: www.larasclinic.com (Built & published last with MUSE 6.0)
The tool returns several errors with sugestions on fixes, some of which seem to code fixes. Here's an example:
    - Eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content
Your page has 1 blocking script resources and 3 blocking CSS resources. This causes a delay in rendering your page.
Optimize CSS Delivery of the following:
    http://www.larasclinic.com/css/site_global.css?96667304
    http://www.larasclinic.com/css/master_a-master.css?427926077
    http://www.larasclinic.com/css/index.css?3883076921
So my questions to the team is...
    Q. How many of these fixes as a Muse user can I do myself to insure the site is as SEO strong as possible, avoiding these Google testing errors?
And what features are coming to Muse to optimise the code output and SEO in the future?
I've seen all the recent tutorials on SEO, but it would be good to see a more in-depth, Google Search Ranking related one and how to optimise Muse websites.
    All answers appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Robbie.

Page Speed is a tool for measuring factors that contribute to the page load performance of a web page. It actually has nothing to do with Search Engine Optimization or your ranking in Google.
If your concern is page load times, there are many different useful tools available. However, in most cases big changes in page load performance come from reducing the amount of content on a page and ensuring all images are being properly sized and encoded (the latter being something Muse mostly takes care of for you), and not the level sort of changes recommended by PageSpeed. In many cases PageSpeed will list a page of changes where many or most are valid, but the investment to make them all would be large and the net gain in page load performance would be very small relative to other sorts of changes that could/should be made.
For SEO (from a very simplified view) there are two primary factors that contribute to where your page ranks within Google. The first is how well the content of your page(s) correlate to the specific search phrase someone entered in Google. And the second is how "popular" your site is, measured primarily by how many other sites/sources contain links to your pages relative to the popularity of other sites that had a similar correlation to the search phrase.
A 60-second course on SEO is:
    1) Pick ~3 search phrases you want to optimize for. Then work to have those phrases and the words in those phrases appear regularly in the content of your pages, paying special attention to .html file names, image file names, headings (marked with h1, h2, etc. tags), page titles, your domain name, image alt text, the text content of the actual pages, etc.
    2) Leverage Twitter, Facebook, Blogs in your industry, etc. to generate interest in your site and thus generate links back to your site.
    3) Submit your sitemap.xml to Google using Google's Webmaster Tools so they're aware of your site and more likely to re-index it sooner rather than later.
There's tons more to SEO, but that's a start. PageSpeed isn't where you want to be if your goal is to improve SEO.

  • BEEN TRYING TO SWITCH FROM SKY UNLIMITED TO INFINI...

The grass is not always greener on the other side! Althought it certainly looked that way when I decided to switch provider to take advantage of the BT Sport package.
I ordered the full monty Infinity, Phone, Broadband and TV package and did so via a cashback website. Strangely the next day they created separate order for just a phone install and my cashback track "failed". (saving BT £120). Although I've waited so long now I launched an investigation using my own evidence to Quidco and it was granted again!
My Phone line was switched over pretty quickly (realised later that once your phone line has been switched to BT, to switch back to Sky and use their equipment at the exchange would cost a fee of £50! grrr). So I started to feel a little trapped. But tried to be positive.
Unfortunately nothing else happened. I called BT who initially denied there was any order for anything else. Luckily I keep screen shots/emails + original details of my order much to their embarassment. They apologised but insisted they should put order again immediately on phone. (which would have saved BT more cashback but I said no thanks I will do it online). I tried to cancel everything but here I was told I would have to pay £50 to switch phone line back. The cheek! Trapped.
I got a date 23rd of July for my switch over to Infinity, BT Vision Box arrived, engineer booked in on a 8am-1pm slot. Things were looking positive. Took day off and engineer was late but he did ring me to warn me in his defence. He seemed very competent and knowledgeable. After 5 hours though he said he had to leave and that he couldn't get it working although he thinks he cleared a fault on the line. I'm in IT and had a friend who used to be Openreach engineer. So we discussed in detail the situation.
Obviously I do not know for sure, but appears that my FTTC service was a no go because the local Cabinet had no spare ports only five broken ones (he tried about 3 of these). He said he was not sure when more would be provisioned. (I thought surely in advance they would reserve one or check this!). Imagine ordering a Tesco grocery delivery only for the driver to turn up saying unfortunately they didnt have anything for me.
But asI had been messed about for 6 weeks I thought BT will be straight back tomorrow to fix this. Engineer told me I would get a call next day. Heard nothing. I rang up 2 days later to be told the engineers were "deciding" what to do next. Never got a call back.
Unfortunately thats where I have been ever since. Only yesterday was I promised a new engineer on 14th of July after another two calls I made to India and 40 mins on phone talking to very nice but time consuming operators:
KULJEET FINGH (promised me a call back)
SWATI KUMARI - very helpful and believes she has fixed this.
I have had about 3 missed calls from scottish sounding customer service reps but they do not leave me a number to reach them. When I do call I get the India overflow or level 1 scripted service who don't know anything about the voicemails I received or my previous calls. Each calls takes ages to get through navigation then explain the situation.
So now I am thinking to myself, why oh why should I let them make me wait about another two weeks. I am struggling to find a reason to stick with BT.
Should I give up and give let Sky try and install Fibre?

Well I have an update. I decided to stay as I was so far down the road. They gave me an engineer appointment of 14 of August which was totally disgusting.
I rang up to complain and was promised a call back as they tried to expediate my request. Never happened.
Whilst on these calls I also questioned the validity of sending another engineer unless they first checked that my local cabinet hard an available fibre port. I was promised and promised that they would put the notes on the call and it would not be a wasted engineer visit.
Engineer came today. Wasted visit - no ports on the cabinet.
He was not even sure why he was sent there knowing there were no ports. Talk about the blind leading the blind.
The incompetency of this corporation is absolutely astounding even when their customers are telling them they are going to fail they lie to your face just to appease you on the phone and move you on.
So I ordered my switch from sky to BT on June 6th.. and so far all I have is a phone line.
On top of this I noticed that they have charged me a late payment fee by DD and full line rental for first month. BT were so slow at installing it all that my up front line rental apparently did not cover their initialy switch over. Despite telling me I would not be charged I have been charged.
Now as a web designer I am now tempted to create basic website and use my SEO skills to push it to top of google rankings sharing with everyone of my experience of BT.

  • How to track meta information throughout a site

I was wondering if there is an easy way to track meta information (keywords, descrption) and possibly page titles throughout a site and have it exported to something like an excel spreadsheet.  I'm trying to track meta and title information over time and see how changes affect google rankings.  It would be nice if I could extract the data quickly instead of going page by page.  Odd request, I know...
Thanks in advance for any help.

A good idea is to use something like Log4J to handle logging in your application. You do have to be careful if your application is clustered and there is serialization involved since your logger won't be serializable, causing clustering to fail (I swear it didn't happen to me)....
    private transient Logger log = null;
    protected final Logger getLogger() {
        if (this.log == null)
            this.log = LogFactory.getLogger(this.getClass());
        return this.log;
    }

  • Speed up website?

    Hi,
We've noticed our google rankings and DA have dropped recently and when we run google tests it looks like a speed issue on our site.
Pingdom says our site is slower than 84% of websites.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to improve the speed of our site or somewhere I can find this info for BC sites?
Would love a point in the right direction.
    Thank you

Google's PageSpeed Insights tool provides straightforward advice on how to improve your page's performance.
I gave it your site; it scored 35/100 for mobiles and 48/100 for desktop browsers.
Just implementing two of the high-priority suggestions could cut ~620KiB from the page weight for desktop browsers -- 385KiB from crushing the images, 237KiB from minifying your CSS & JS. (what!)
Not to mention the requests that are render-blocking.
As for actually optimizing your images, there's a quick checklist here, which is part of a thorough guide here.
(Ignore the "Leverage Browser Caching" recommendations, there's naught you can do about that)
TheBCMan - where did you get the figure of 57.9K from? My dev tools report 1.6mb downloaded over 96 requests for that page...

  • HT1331 Why does this article still not indicate that Airport Disk Utility no longer exists?

ADU stopped existing after 10.6. I see this article was updated in May; that means two revisions of OSX which don't contain this utility have been announced or released at that time yet it's still wrong. It's near the top of google rankings, making this a crappy thing to do to your users who are looking for information, Apple.

Yes, you are correct - there is no longer a Airport Disk Utility. It was discontinued. That article was accurate up until 10.7 was introduced.
You cannot call "from the main window of AirPort Disk Utility enable "Show AirPort Disks in the menu bar"" a 'typo' - it is flat-out wrong, as that menu option no longer exists at all. So the instructions can not be applicable.
This could be corrected simply by adding "10.6 and earlier OSX versions" or the like to the products affected list. But leaving this entirely unusable set of unstructions up as it stands is misleading and counter-productive.

  • DW CC - Jquery questions

Just a couple of newbie question for ya!
    1) Re jquery accordian & tabs; does this affect a site's seo? I assume it does in one way, as I suspect Google takes a page title, kws in url, etc as a factor for ranking. But with, say, 5 seperate tabs/accordians, you're only left with a single title, url, etc. If ranking is your goal, then avoid this approach?
    2) Re the jquery mobile page (under insert); can anyone explain why I'd use this instead of creating a fluid grid layout? I'm not quite sure what this achieves.
    Thanks!

I would like to jump in and give my thoughts about this because I actually thought about this same question you are asking about jquery accordion menus when I was redesigning my website [link removed by moderator] and after thorough consideration I decided to just create the menu structure without using any jquery, because for my purpose and rankings in Google it wouldn't work out for me.
Having said that, without knowing your website architecture and your content structure, this question you are asking must be taken in as per your needs. Because although using scripts for menus can effect your Google rankings to a degree, it only has very small implications. What I think you should focus on is, your users experience, meaning, your first thought, should always be, if I create my menu in this way, or in that way "will that help my users navigate througout my website? And will they be able to find the information they are looking for?"
As you can see, user experience of your visitors is more important than considering if you should use fancy jquery.
Here's what I always do, I first think about the whole content I want to present, then I always ask? Can I accomplish that presentation using pure CSS, if the answer is yes, then I forget about jquery and stick with pure CSS (for the sake of precisely for rankings). Also, as with mobile website's I actually don't worry about it (but once again that will depend on your online niche) because I like to focus on a design element in such way that it works across everything. Because perhaps in the future Google will heavily distunguish mobile site content as opposed to desktop viewing. But as it stands right now, it makes no difference as far as rankings (that I assure you) despite what many may say. Also, designing content just for mobile sites, may not be suitable (resource wise (time, energy, money etc.) so I would stick with just using fluid layouts and thus invest your time and energy just creating useful information for your visitors.
I hope these insights contribute to your question (also, the URL I mentioned above is valid html5 (Using experimental feature) and I managed to create a design without any divs ; I checked it against most major browsers and also (I-pad, I phone, different sized monitors etc.) and I am very happy with how it renders on mobile devices.

  • Puzzle:  Can you figure out why my site isn't Search Engine Optimized?

    Hello community,
I launched my first website for a client, http://www.extremecrossfit.net/index.html, and I cannot figure why it is not displaying in any of the Google rankings.
    Things I have done:
Created paragraph tags, (H1 and P) to place on pages.
Given all images titles & names.
Filled Metadata with keywords and description.
    Placed links.
Provided Site Map in Google Webmaster tools.
Perhaps I am impatient.  Perhaps I've done something wrong.  The site has only been live 1-2 weeks, so perhaps I just need to wait.
Any advice is eternally welcome!  Thank you.
    CJ
    http://www.extremecrossfit.net/index.html

You seem to have done most things correctly. Try changing or adding the Meta Page description to say or add "Martinsburg West Virginia W.Va Crossfit etc. " The word crossfit has lots of competing sites and if you narrow your search criteria, its quite possible that you will be found when someone searches for crossfit W.Va.
Also showing up in search engines and ranking takes several weeks to months.

  • How does iWeb 08 compaire to RapidWeave or Sandvox?

How does iWeb 08 compaire to RapidWeave or Sandvox? I am very concerned about iWeb having to reload everything each time, sort of like MicroSoft Publisher producing website. I am also concerned how that effects your Google rankings by putting all new pages up and it looks like I would have to reinstall my Google Analytics every time I update my website? If you can also recommend any site for compairing the three products I woud appreciate it.

  • Is having a base tag worth while?

I was checking out my Google rankings this afternoon when I realized that some college kid just flew up to position 2 (******* ).  So I'm tearing apart his website to see what he knows that I don't and I found <base href="domain"/>  I had never seen this before and I'd love to know if anyone is really for using this... or is it really worth my time?
    Thanks

I’ve read posts by different people about whether or not success with Comenity’s SCT has any much or little to do with just your credit score. I understand that some stores are easier to get the pop-up for and that sometime it just takes several attempts until you can get a pop-up for some stores. I’m curious whether or not the likeliness of receiving a pop-up has much to do with whether or not you already have cards with Comenity. I have two cards with low CL and utilization from Comenity. I pay my bills early but not in full and have already received small CLIs on my two cards. Could any of this affect the SCT? I’m being patient and have been gardening since the beginning of August. I’m in the process of bringing my utilization down on my other accounts on my reports. There are just a few cards that would be very useful but I can’t seem to get a pop-up. If I could get VS, Overstock, HSN, Avenue/or any of the sister stores I would be fine gardening for at least a year until I try for some really good cards.  These are cards I would find use for right now.

  • SEO with a one-page Flash Desktop site combined with multipage Table & Phone sites

I have an old but very nice Flash site that, like all Flash sites, is only one page of html and therefore not very search engine- friendly (nor, tablet or phone- friendly). I would like to retain this site, but also create, new, multipage, html-optimized, non-Flash Tablet and Phone versions of this site by means of Muse. My question concerns SEO under this circumstance.
    (1) Which of the sites will Google crawl to get title tags and content? The one-page Desktop version? The multipage Tablet version? The multipage Phone version? All three? If the latter, all three equally, or does it favor, say the destop version over the phone version?
    (2) What about potential Google penalties for duplicate content shared between the three versions of the site?
Thanks for any knowledgeable advice you might be able to share with me.

    Hi Justin,
Thanks for your prompt response, it was very informative. I read through the documents you referenced. I have a couple followup questions, but I suspect they may be a bit more specialized than you may be able to answer (although I think you'll admit they are very worthwhile questions).
    (1) In the scenario I outlined above in my first post, the desktop version has next to no html content, while the tablet and phone version have lots of html content. Does the ranking of the desktop version rise or fall on its own merits in the Google rankings (in which case it will fall), or does it rise and fall based on the merits of the total html content in all three versions of the site, including the three sets of title tags?
    (2) Should the title tags in all three versions of the website be identical to avoid Google's potential wrath, or will the site rank higher if they are all different from each other?
(What I am secretly wishing for, in case you read between the lines, is to have the ability to boost the Flash desktop version of the site that is only one page with one title tag and viritually no html by means of html rich, multipage Table and Phone versions of the site. Could it be this wish will be fulfilled?)
Thanks again for any insite you or others in the community can provide.

  • Why my iweb website is no longer getting indexed by google?

I have had my website for 2 years and it was showing up on google with no problems. Now my site is not showing up on google and I dont know why.
I have verified the site, I have resubmitted the URL. I have requested reconsideration, but I just need to know why my site that stop showing up on google.
.Google mention that .mac blocks googlebots from indexing the site. What should I do to fix this probelm. (url:www.noticemagazine.com)

    In order for search engines to find your site you need to have text content. They don't know what your site is about if there is no text content on it. I have went through your site and you should do the following;
    1) Get ride of your "click here to enter site" page (the Welcome_.html page)
Never EVER use your default page in this way. This is called a splash page and provides no value to your visitors since they need an additional click to find your page and it provides no indication to search engines about what your site is all about. Your default page is the most important page on your site, use it to link to the most important pages on your website and to have your important keywords.
    2) Your title tags NEED to have your most important keywords
Your title tags (what you see at the top of your browser) need to have your most important keywords . They should be 60-120 characters long, unique for every single page and describe what your page is all about. This is one of the most important things for search engines. Not only do they use this to learn about your website content but its also what users will see when your site is listed in Google's result. Do you think someone will click a link called 'Welcome' when they do a search in Google, or "Notice Magazine: Lifestyle and Fashion Advice" (for example).
    3) You need more text content
All of your pages are mostly images, you need more content that search engines can properly index. Imagine you were searching for text in a Word Document and it was just an image, you wouldn't find anything. This is basically what Google does too. Most of your text has been converted to images because you use non standard fonts in iWeb. In iWeb, open the fonts palette, and select 'Web'. Stick to those fonts.
    4) Link to other pages on your site using your keywords
You need to link between your pages on your site using keywords you want to be found with. Anchor text (the text you click to follow a link), is used by Google to rank your website. Tip: Do a search for click here in Google, look at the top result and notice that click here is not found anywhere on that page. Its because so many people link to that first result using the term 'click here'. (Its Adobe Reader's page for those that do not want to search).
    5) Get a real domain name AND real hosting
MobileMe is NOT meant for commercial sites and should never be used for it. A real host with a real domain name (that includes your keywords) you will outrank the same website hosted in MobileMe (even with domain forwarding. Any kind of domain forwarding is not ideal for search engines because of how redirects are handled).
    6) Create and submit an XML Sitemap file
Not only will this help with you rankings, Google/Yahoo/Bing provide a Webmaster Tools account that will provide feedback on why your site may not be in Google.
    7) Speed up your website
You are using too many high quality images on your site which is making it extremely slow. Reduce the quality of your images and optimize your HTML/CSS/Javascript code so it loads faster. Not only does this provide a bad user experience for your visitors but Google will not index a slow loading page as much as a faster loading page. Also, Google announced just a few days ago that the speed of a website's load time WILL become an important ranking factor in the VERY NEAR future.
Having a real web host will help with the speed issue.
    8) Redo your navigation bar using text and include your keywords in each link. iWeb's javascript navigation bar does not allow search engines to easily find all your pages on your site.
    9) Get links from third party websites. Post on forums, use twitter, facebook, blogs and other social networking sites. Links from other websites are a very important factor for how well your website ranks.
