Google Reader crashes Safari 4

Every time I'm browsing my Google Reader feeds it crashes Safari 4. I've had some problems with GMail too. Is this a problem with Google's websites or Safari 4?
It's curious to have problems with Google's stuff and Safari considering they're developing their own WebKit based browser...
Anyone else crashing their browser because of Google Reader?

I asked a friend and he's having the same problem... I can't believe we're the only ones, lol.

  • Google maps crashes Safari 1.3.2

In the last week or so, any attempt to load certain websites has caused my mac (PowerBook G4 running 10.3.9) to crash. I have isolated this to google maps (many websites seem to use this functionality in embedded windows for instance). The crash reports seem to indicate some sort of java process so I have tried trashing all google, java and safari preference files (from ~library and at the user level), but to no avail. I have also reset Safari and checked for updates. I wonder whether I have missed any other preference files as this does seem to be the most likely cause. OS X itself is unaffected and Safari restarts and loads all other pages perfectly. Disk Warrior didn't report any corrupted files and I have verified disk permissions. Any suggestions?

Unfortunately I'm not sure all the kids' older games will work under a later OS but that might just be too bad.
If the older games run in Classic (OS 9.x.x), 10.5 does not support Classic in any way, but 10.4.11 still does fully support the Classic environment; you just have to install it after installing 10.4.11 from the OS 9 disk you may already have, then update it to 9.2.2, which might be available via Software Update, or more likely, perusing the Older Software downloads section of the Apple site.
Be sure to check the system requirements for 10.5 carefully to be sure all your systems meet or comfortably exceed the minimum processor speed for it (the Bondi Blue iMac does not meet the specs) before installing it on any of them.

  • Reader crashing Safari

I have tried to access the Reader function in Safari 5 but everytime I click the Reader icon in the progress bar it crashes Safari. What happens is that if I go to a page that Reader can work I click the icon and it goes purple then if I click it again Safari crashes. Could this be related to the fact that I still can't get Extensions to become enabled they still say Localized string not found in the Extensions window in Prefs

    HI,
    See if this helps...
Go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari and see if that makes a difference. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder. If Safari functions as it should, move that .plist file to the Trash.

    Is this a font issue?
I had reset my Safari font to Arial and added Arial to the HD>Lib>Fonts folder but recently started using Linotype Font Explorer which has moved some things around.
I did reset Safari though and it has been using the deault fonts of Times and Courier and still crashes every time at video.google.com

  • Google Reader: Mark All as Read?

I am using Google Reader with Safari on the iPhone
    www.google.com/reader/m/subscriptions
This is an excellent way to keep up with Blogs. I find that when I make changes in Google Reader on the PC with Firefox or IE, the subscriptions change nicely on the iPhone. The one thing I have been unable to do, however, is mark all messages as "read" on the iPhone side; even if I do this on the PC side, the iPhone still shows hundreds of items as "unread."
Has anyone figured out a way to reset all iPhone Google Reader items to "read" status, so that it will be easy to see what is truly new?
    Thanks!

they seem to over look very basic things like giving the IPad any telephone function?? so if there is no local wifi you are stuffed.... I guess you can always pick up the local newspaper and read whilst waiting for the IPad to fin a wifi network ?
Do you really think the iPad should be a grotesquely oversized cell phone or are you completely oblivious the the announced 3G data models?
BTW The link to leave suggestions on iphone enhancements doesn't work !
It sure works for me and everyone else.

  • Visiting Google News in Safari causes Crash!

Okay, something weird has started to happen today on my machine (1 GHz 12" PB G4, OS 10.4.2). When I visit Google News in Safari, and click on a news link, everything works fine. Then when I try to go back, I can no longer access the network. I'm networked via AirPort Express to a DSL line.
But here's the weird part--Safari is stuck, but then this seems to also crash everything else. When I try to open an application, I get bouncing but the application fails to open. No warning messages are produced. Similarly, I can try to shut down or restart or switch users, and although the dialog boxes pop up, I cannot actually complete the request. I cannot monitor processes. The whole system is hosed and I can only restart by pushing the power button.
This has happened three times today, and has not happened before. I have reset Safari and run Disk Utility to no avail. My next thoughts are to try to reproduce this behavior on another user account, and then to run the Apple Hardware Test (I don't have it immediately on hand). Oddly, no other type of browsing seems to do this--it is quite specific to Google News, and even then only when I try to return to Google News from a linked site.
If anybody has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it!
    {509}

No, I am saying Google News is unREADable.
The system demands an RSS reader, suggests getting one in the App Store. Got two so far, neither of which wanted to show me the news from Google.
The lastest ($1.99) said "Sorry, blogs catalog is not yet available. Use RSS URL field."
    Huh?
So, by now I realize Safari dropped its own RSS reader (the blog that announced that refused to tell me why, instead referring me to still another site . . . as though those of us missing such a device hadn't already visited enough).
The previous RSS attempt (free) just kept telling me to get an RSS reader, and showing me ads for things I didn't want or need.

  • Google Reader Errors in 64-bit Safari 4.0.3

Since the update to Snow Leopard and moving to a 64-bit version of Safari (Version 4.0.3 (6531.9)), I have been experiencing a script error in GOOGLE READER (http://www.google.com/reader/).
After several minutes of browsing, I receive an error message stating "Oops…an error occurred. Please try again in a few seconds." After the error, I can view currently loaded content, but attempts to view any additional content results in an empty folder and the following error: " "The feed being requested cannot be found." As a result, I am logged out of Google Reader and must log-in again. Interestingly, I am only logged out at the Google Reader site and can access other Google web properties without logging in.
I do not experience this error using Camino or FF, only Safari.
I've tried emptying the browser cache, restarting Safari and even resetting Safari. I've even tried using a secure page (https) instead of the traditional Google Reader URL. None of these have any effect. Error seems to be specific only to Google Reader on 64-bit Safari.
    Any thoughts? Suggestions?

"The feed being requested cannot be found."
If it happens in both 32-bit and 64-bit mode, but not another browser, that would seem to implicate the HTML and/or JavaScript being used by Google Reader is somehow incompatible with Safari, so it's not a Safari or Snow Leopard issue, unless you didn't have this same problem with the same feed in a previous version of Safari.
I note from your signature that you are using an older version of OSX.
Yes, but that makes no difference. Safari 4 is Safari 4, regardles of which version of the OS it's running on.

  • Safari 4 tabs do not display unread counts for GMail and Google Reader

To reproduce this, do the following:
    1. Create a bookmark for either GMail or Google Reader
    2. Click on the bookmark under Safari to load either site (make sure it has at least on unread item)
The text in the tab title will not display the unread count. Instead, it displays either "GMail" or "Google Reader". Firefox displays the unread counts for both sites in the tab's title text as follows: "Gmail - Inbox(2) - <email addr>", "Google Reader (2)".
This is the one of the main reasons why I will continue to use Firefox over Safari 4. Displaying the unread counts in the tab titles allows me quickly glance at the browser's window with both sites loaded in separate tabs to see if there are any unread items.

I was able to fix the problem by disabling Gmail Labs (you can always reenable them again).
    http://mail.google.com/mail/?labs=0.
Or go to Settings-Labs and you'll notice a link at the very top asking you if you want to kill all the labs if it breaks something on gmail...there's an escape hatch.

  • Safari Memory Leak (especially with Google Reader)

Safari starts gobbling up memory with use, never releasing it. I have turned off extensions, moved all internet plugins to disabled directory, restarted, etc. but nothing helps. Right now its sitting at 1.5GB real memory usage.
One quick way for me to replicate this issue is to go through a few hundred google reader items. It never releases memory even when I close that google reader tab. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

  • Safari 5.1 won't play with Google Reader, YouTube

For a couple of days now, Safari won't display Google Reader correctly—it just shows text. Then tonight, it stopped loading YouTube videos.
In both cases, switching to Firefox solves the problem.
Anyone else out there having the same problem? Any solutions?
    Eric

First, go to Safari / Preferences then select the Extensions tab. If you have any installed, turn that off, quit then relaunch Safari. Try Google Reader and YouTube. If that helped, then it's the Extension(s) causing the problem.
If it's not an Extension, quit Safari.
Open a Finder window select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left. Then open the Library folder, then the Caches folder, then the com.apple.Safari folder.
Move the cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash.
    Relaunch Safari.
For YouTube, you may need to uninstall then reinstall the Flash plugin and delete Flash cookies.

  • Where is the "google reader" search in Safari?

Whenever I use any google web "app" such as news, gmail, video etc, there is always a search box at the top, except in RSS reader. This only happens in Safari.  If I use Chrome, the search bar is there. This means I cannot search within my RSS feeds if I use Safari, my preferred browser.  I know the search box used to be there but I can't remember when it went away.  Is this an issue with Safari or with google?  Any ideas on how I can get the reader search box back into Safari?
BTW, firefox also has the search box. again Safari does not.

    Hi,
If you had the Extension installed, check Safari / Preferences - Extensions. You may have turned Extensions off or inadvertently uninstalled Google Reader ?
    It's available here.

  • Google Reader comments cause Firefox to crash.

Clicking the link to add a comment to a Google Reader entry causes Firefox to crash unexpectedly. I've only had this problem since the 3.6.12 update. So far as I can tell, I don't have any problematic add-ons, and my browser is up to date.

This can be problem with one of the fonts that is used on that page and that is corrupted.
You can use the System File Checker to check if font files are missing or corrupted.

  • Safari does not display GMail/Google Reader unread counts in tab titles

To reproduce this, do the following:
    1. Create a bookmark for either GMail or Google Reader
    2. Click on the bookmark under Safari to load either site (make sure it has at least on unread item)
The text in the tab title will not display the unread count. Instead, it displays either "GMail" or "Google Reader". Firefox displays the unread counts for both sites in the tab's title text as follows: "Gmail - Inbox(2) - <email addr>", "Google Reader (2)".
This is the one of the main reasons why I will continue to use Firefox over Safari. Displaying the unread counts in the tab titles allows me quickly glance at the browser's window with both sites loaded in separate tabs to see if there are any unread items.

I had the same problem and was able to find a workaround. The key insight actually came from another one of your (jkwuc89) posts where you mentioned:
Loading GMail or Google Reader from a Safari bookmark appears to behave differently when compared to loading either site from a link on another page.
The solution is to change the address of your bookmark so that it is similar to loading the site from a link on another page. When you bookmark Gmail, it's address will read:
    https://mail.google.com/mail/#inbox
However, edit the address of this bookmark to:
    javascript:window.location='https://mail.google.com/mail/#inbox'
This Javascript snippet will trick Safari to open Gmail as if you had clicked a link on another page and the tab will display the correct page title including unread count. You can follow a similar pattern with Google Reader or other sites that exhibit a similar problem.
