Google Sync with iCal

Hi there.
I understand that the following is mostly concerned with the Google side of things, which is why I have posted it as well in the google support forum here. http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=266674bb5a2e2af2& hl=en
However there are a few questions here that are applicable to Mac and iCal, and Mac Mail. However if anyone knows any answers to any of the questions on the google side of things then please share.
I want to make proper use of Google's OTA service. As I have an android phone and a Mac I use everyday, It would be fantastic If I could easily add tasks, calander events and contacts on every device so that they sync properly.
*Calendar sync*
I have set up iCal to sync with Google Calendar. Only events I add on Google Calendar seem to sync with iCal. All events from Google calendar go onto my phone however and iCal. I synced my account by going to preferences --> sync with google account. However I came across this, http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=99358#ical
Will the above link sync events from iCal --> google calendar? or is it essencially the same as the other sync I did?
Is there also a way to sync every calendar in iCal to Google Calendar (and therefore my phone), as I can only sync (at the moment) the specific google calendar within iCal.
*Tasks sync*
I just wondered if there was a programe that worked on Mac and with android phones, that syncs tasks from phone to computer and vice versa. i.e when I complete a task on my phone, its automatically checked off on my computer. Is that google tasks?
I have set up tasks in iCal, is there anyway I can sync those to Google Calendar? Is there a programe that anyone recommends that will sync tasks from Mac --> to Google Calendar --> to phone and the other way round.
Contacts
Currently I have set up the same sync as in iCal therefore, will new contacts I create either in Address Book or Google Contacts and changes to my contacts (i.e on my phone) sync across easily to Apple's Address book (and vice versa).
Email
I connected my Mac mail to my gmail a long time ago via a very complicated way. Now when I updated my computer, its become easier to add gmail accounts. Should I remove the account for gmail on mac mail, and add it again with the new simpler method. This might explain that whenever I send mail through my phone or online at gmail.com it never goes into the sent box on mac mail.
For instance, The last message I sent (according to Mac mail) wasn't the last message I sent on my phone or through gmail.com.
Currently the incoming mail server on mac mail is set at pop.gmail.com should it be imap.gmail.com (which is the new way of connecting) or are they both the same.
I know I raised loads of questions and repeated myself alot, but if anyone can answer any of them or give any advice, then it would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Alex Richardson

Hey kiranvemuri,
It sounds like the issue is solely with your Google calendar and its interaction with iCal. Here is an article that will help you troubleshoot this issue:
iCal 5.x: Set up a calendar account in iCal
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4737
Set up a Google or Yahoo! account
Choose iCal > Preferences and click Accounts.
To add a new account, click Add in the lower-left corner.
Enter your Google or Yahoo! email address and password, and then click Create.iCal finds any calendar accounts associated with the email address you provide.
I would suggest that you use the information above to delete the Google account from iCal, then set it up again in iCal. If you still encounter difficulty, this article should be some help as well:
Sync Services: Advanced troubleshooting for contact and calendar syncing

Take care, and thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.

  • Sync with ical no longer working

Upgraded 2nd-Gen itouch to OS 3.1.1 from 3.0. Also upgraded iTunes to 9.0. yesterday. Using G4 (dual Core) pre-Intel chip desktop tower.
Had tried the mobile me trial starting three days ago. Sync between Mobile Me screwed up iCal and so cancelled sync same day. Had to recover ical data from back up. Synced with iTouch fine - though messed up my color associations on calendar on iTouch.
iTouch no longer syncing with iCal (or rather changes & additions not showing up in ical).
Using Spanning Sync to update Google Calendar. The updated calendar events from the iTouch are showing up in google Calendar as a result of the sync between iCal and google Calendar.
iTouch is primary day-timer with back-up to iCal.

As an addition to my first post here, I did also attempt to register my iTouch with Mobile me. I thought that I had completed the registration, but the account does not appear in the accounts listing in the calendar/mail/contacts section of settings. This suggests to me that either:
    1) I did not 'save' the account settings, or
    2) the account will not actually show in the listing.
I only make mention because as I continue to peruse for solutions to my issue, I noted that if using Mobile me to sync between computer & Mobile Me and iPhone/iTouch & Mobile me it appears that the sync between the computer & iPhone/iTouch needs to be disabled.
I make be reaching for straws, but this is one of the ideas I have that might resolve my syncing issue between iCal and my iTouch. Is there any way of identify in Mobile me if I did register the Mobile Me account with the iTouch - just in case it doesn't show in the iTouch when it is supposed to?

  • Events created on my iPhone 5 calendar are no longer syncing with iCal.

Events created on my iPhone 5 calendar are no longer syncing with iCal on my Macbook Pro (Lion OSX). It works fine the other way around.
I can't understand why, and cannot find a solution. Please help!

You can no longer sync via iTunes. That method of sync was removed (and the 1000+ post thread is arguments over things tangientally related to that).
You need to sync via other means than iTunes, then.
One option is to use iCloud. If you sign into iCloud on all your devices, and then make sure your calendars are in the "iCloud" section on your devices, they should sync.
If you don't want to use iCloud, you could use Google calendars, they operate much the same way (but may be less reliable).
Or if you use Exchange for work, you could sync that way.
Or if none of those are acceptable, you could install OS X Server and set up the calendar server on your local network and use it to sync. This is fairly straightforward "for setting up a UNIX calendar server" but it's not trivial and beyond the scope of a forum post to explain it all

  • Entourage no longer syncing with iCal..

I deleted all my MS Office prefs due to an Excel issue. Entourage no longer syncs with iCal. I turned synching on in Entourage. In iSync "reset sync services" is grayed out.. help?

  • Recommendations for a phone that will sync with iCal and Addressbook?

I'm confused by the posts regarding what mobile phones will and won't sync with iCal and Addressbook. Apple has a list of isync compatible devices (http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/isync/devices.html), but it seems from some of the posts here as though phones not listed will also sync.
Can those of you who know about cellular phones that sync with iCal and Addressbook please recommend some models for me. These are the things I need:
    -Cingular service compatibility
-syncs with iCal (including to dos) and Addressbook (must store at least 1500 entries)
    -bluetooth
-a small phone would be nice
I don't care whether it has a camera, an mp3player, PTT, picture messaging, video, or voice activation. Wi-Fi would be nice, but it's not imperative. Also, please let me know if I would need to purchase any third-party software or hardware.
    Thank you.
    Todd Berliner

The supported device list contains a list of devices that Apple claims are explicitly compatible with iSync out of the box, subject to the limitations outlined in the footnotes at the bottom of the page [the ones that apparently almost no one ever reads] and the general rule that carriers may not support certain features [say, Bluetooth or USB] and may not support certain functions [say, calendar synchronization] with a supported device.
Manufacturers like Audiovox, LG, Samsung and Sharp are not supported, unless they run an OS listed below, instead of their proprietary operating systems. If a device is not manufactured by Motorola, Nokia, Panasonic, Seimens, Sendo or SONY Ericsson, it is generally not supported, unless it uses…
    • the Blackberry OS [which requires third-party software]
    • the danger HipTop OS [which requires third-party software]
    • the Palm OS [which is is supported but performs better with third-party software]
    • the Windows Mobile OS [which requires third-party software*]
*Windows Mobile 5 device support is not yet available in release software.
…or, an iSync-compatible plug-in has been written to extend support to a specific device or family of devices.
Julian referred you to a site where he has made a number of plug-ins available for various mobile handsets. Nova Media also sells a low cost package of plug-ins providing support for various handsets.
    http://www.novamedia.de/sync/index.html
Others have built single-use plug ins with various degrees of success, which you can find using tools like Google.
The bottom line: if you are going to vary from the iSync Supported Device list, you have to do some relatively extensive research, including searching these forums for your specific device, to determine if it can be supported. Many plug-ins are intended only to work with iSync 2.2, so Mac OS X 10.4.6 is a requirement in most cases.

  • How to sync with iCal

    Hi
I'm having problems syncing my BB Bold 9780 with iCal on a Mac desktop running OSX Lion 10.7.5 with 4GB memory. I created a new writable calendar in iCal, turned off the wireless sync on my BB and tried syncing but get the following error message "There are no writable Calendars available for syncing on this computer. Please launch iCal or Microsoft Entourage and crete a new writable calendar".
Looks like there are many other people who had similar problems but couldn't quite track the right answer from the various threads.
Thanks in advance for your help

You can get 2-way synchronization between iCal and google calendar, but you have to start with a google calendar and import that into iCal. You can't sync an existing local iCal calendar with google.
    Here's what I would suggest:
    1. Export your local iCal calendar as a .ics file.
    2. Make a new calendar on google calendars.
    3. Upload your .ics file so that it populates your new google calendar with the events from your local iCal calendar (do this via google calendar's web interface).
    4. Then use iCal to sync that newly-created google calendar with iCal.
    5. Now you can use iCal to edit events in this new google calendar, and they will be synched with the google calendar. You can also edit events using the google calendar web interface, and they will be synched with the version visible in iCal the next time you open iCal or ctrl-click "Refresh" that iCal calendar.
    6. You can keep your original local iCal calendar, or delete it, once you know your new setup is doing what you want it to.

  • App recommendation - to list that syncs with Ical?

Anyone know of an app that is a to-do or task list that syncs with Ical? I can sync my I cal via mobile-me, so if I can find an app that will sync to the calendar on the iphone itself, that'd be great.
I looked around macworld and the app store and couldn't find one. Any help appreciated.

Check Appigo To-Do, I think they sync with iCal.
    Maybe 2Do.
I'd try google "sync ical to-do iphone", eg, rather than macworld or app store--lots of people have the same question and there will be comparative reviews on solving it.

  • I want to cut and paste iCal entries on iPad.  Have seen a number of questions raised but no definitive answer - is it possible or not?  (I use Bento but that doesn't sync with ICal now so can use that solution)

I want to cut and paste iCal entries on iPad.  Have seen a number of questions raised but no definitive answer - is it possible or not?
(I use Bento but that doesn't sync with ICal now so can use that solution)
Hope to hear helpful news soon....
    C

No, the camera connection kit only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, it doesn't support copying content off the iPad. For your second camera instead of the SD reader part of the kit, does the iPad to camera cable not work with it for direct transfer to the iPad ?
For Lightroom and Nikon software again no - you can only install apps that are available in the iTunes app store on your computer and the App Store app on the iPad, 'normal' PC and Mac (OS X) software are not compatible with the iPad (iOS). There are some apps that perform fairly basic editing functions that are available in the store, but nothing as sophisticated as, for example, Lightroom.

  • TS1627 iCal on my MacBook Pro won't sync with iCal on the iPhone and visa versa

Just got a new iPhone 5 and now iCal on my MacBook Pro won't sync with iCal on the iPhone and visa versa

  • IPhone calendar will not sync with iCal on Mac

Calendar entries on my iPhone 4S/iOS 5.1 will not sync with iCal on my MacBook Pro 2.4/10.6.8, but it will the other way around. I have tried:
    Restarting iPhone
Re-setting sync services (holding down Option key and clicking on Sync icon in menu bar)
Changing which calendar to sync with (iTunes 10.6.1)
This may have something to do with having to do a complete Time Machine backup after a Volume Optimisation with Tech Tool Pro rendered my startup disk as un-bootable....???
I do not use Mobile Me or iCloud (can't with Snow Leopard...) and it is a straight USB connection.
I consider myself a medium expert, with no programming/Terminal skills whatsoever.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Manolis

Thanks. There is another thread that shares a solution that involves deleting ical Library cache files and Preference files.  I"ll see if that works.  ICloud shouldn't be a factor in my case since I don't use it and it's "off" in Preferences. I am encouraged that I don't need to use it to fix this issue based on other's experiences, but we'll see!

  • Ical on iphone does not sync with ical on mac, but the mac does it!

My ical on my iphone does not sync with ical on mac using MobileMe, but reverse it works very well.
so typing an new event in ical on my phone will NOT appear in ical at my computer. Typing a new event on my mac, than within 10 seconds it appears on my phone.
anybody know how to resolve this? never had the problem before
problem 2: ical on my iphone seems to duplicate a lot of events. Non of them are duplicated on my computer.
    related problem?
    thank
    Hein

I have solved my problem - don't know if yours is the same. I noticed on iPhone, when I listed the calendars there are two sections: the top line showed "All Calendars ->"; when I click on that I get duplicate entries for everything.
    Below that is:
    "From My Mac.
"All from My Mac ->", followed by a list of individual calendars. When I clicked on that I got single entries.
This led me to realize that in my Settings ->Accounts I had the old "...mac.com" a/c and new "..me.com" a/c. I had thought it didn't matter.
Once I eliminated the "mac.com" A/c, I had only one set of calendars.
    Hope this helps you.

  • IPhone 3G will no longer sync with iCal?

I have been trying to sync for a couple of days but it just won't add any of the new appointments I add to the phone?
It has all the old appointments in iCal but won't sync the new stuff.
I just did a complete Restore of my phone which has not helped?
    Any idea's?
    thanks
    Using MBP to sync.

    Hey Allan,
The funny thing is that I don't get that option on my mac in prefs.
I get it on my windows itunes (which is where I set-up my account and sync most things)
I use my mac purely to sync with ical for a back-up for my calander and address book.
Had no problem before a day or so ago?
    thanks!

  • With Update 1.1.3  iPhone no longer syncs with iCal

I run Leopard on a MacBook Pro. After upgrading my iPhone to 1.1.3, iCal and the calendar on iPhone no longer syncs, at all. I brought this to the NYC Soho Apple Store, but the genius couldn't figure it out. Only the two default calendars "Home" and "Work" synced, although not every time. Help! What should I do now? Enter events twice? Once in the iPhone, since that's what I take with me, and once on iCal, since when restoring iPhone settings that's what's used? Many thanks!

I'm not sure I understand what the problem is -- first you said it doesn't sync at all, and then you said that your Home and Work calendars sync intermittently.
Personally, I would do several things:
    1) Make sure you are not using Entourage -- and if you are, make sure all Sync functions are unchecked in preferences so that nothing is using Mac's sync services and copying back and forth.
    2) Print out your calendars (use month view) for the entire year so that you have a backup.
    3) Do you need to have separate calendars? I find it ridiculous personally to have work and home and entourage calendars, and combine them into one. It's all my calendar information anyway, and it goes with me everywhere, why would I want more than one calendar....anyway....not to get off on a tangent...
If you can do without two calendars, combine them all into one (you export one of them, then import it back into the other one, then delete the one your exported and imported. You can do a search for the help topic on how to combine calendars.
Rename the one combined calendar your name, rather than home or work. Sync your iPhone. On the Info tab, make sure that you have the calendar name selected (it will recognize the new name of your calendar. Also make sure you have the sync to: Your Name calendar selected.
    4) If that does not work, I would totally delete all of my calendars from iCal - and sync (to erase all the calendar information from your iPhone).
    5) Create a new calendar, and manually re-enter all your calendar information. Sync new information to your iPhone.
In reality -- I have no idea why you are having problems -- I also have 1.1.3 on my iPhone, and I also sync with iCal. I haven't had any problems -- but then I only have the one calendar.

  • IPhone 3GS calendar is no longer syncing with iCal

iPhone 3GS calendar is no longer syncing with iCal since upgrade to Lion. No issues prior to upgrade. Ideas?

I am having the same problem.  I have snow leopard and since I upgraded to itune 5.0, I have had nothing but problems.  In icloud, all of my events quadrupled which then caused all my ical events to do the same on my computer and phone. What a nightmare!  The apple support guy had never seen anything like it!  I have since cleaned up my calendar on both my phone and macbook, but now any event I add to my phone does not show up during sync.  I noticed that when I go into mail, contacts, calendars and then go into my gmail account, the calendar button is set to off. If i try to switch it on, I get a message asking what I would like to do with the local calendars on my phone.  I am afraid to do anything so I just cancel!  Any thoughts?  The calendar on my computer is current so I could always over write my phone during a sync--but still unsure.  Thanks
