GoPro Black Footage to Premiere Elements issues

I am trying (unsuccessfully) to bring footage from a GoPro Hero3+ Black into Premiere Elements 12.
I have tried various things including using GoPro Studio to convert the MP4 files to CineForm AVI files but every way I've tried, the quality is sub par (if I convert to AVI the quality is bad right when I import it and if I bring them in as MP4 files, the quality loss happens once it renders in PE). Most recently I tried importing the MP4 files directly into PE and at first they look okay but once they render, they are extremely pixelated. Oddly (?) I did not encounter this problem with videos shot at 1280X960 at 47.952 fps (in which case I converted the files in GOPro Studio to AVIs and imported them into PE without significant quality loss, or at least they look good enough for my purposes!)
This is the setting the video clips from the problematic GoPro videos were shot at: 1280X720 at 47.952 FPS (their new "SuperView" 720p). I am using a Lenovo PC laptop with Windows 7 Professional.
Does it matter what settings I chose when I start a new project? I've tried several (none seem to match the source video very closely). If it does matter, which one is best? I've tried to look through the discussions but haven't found anything with the same problem (some are similar but I've tried some of the suggested solutions to no avail). Any help would be greatly appreciated because I can not use the videos the way they are coming out of PE.

Stay with the footage direct from the GoPro.
Open Premiere Elements 12 to the Expert workspace.
Go to File Menu/New/Project and Change Settings.
In the Change Settings area change the project preset to
NTSC
AVCHD
AVCHD-LITE 720p30
Before you exit that area, in the final dialog that you see there (new project dialog), make sure to have a check mark next to "Force Selected Project Settings on This Project".
The key thought with the project preset here is to select one that will direct the program to establish a 1280 x 720 project space in the Edit area monitor. This decision is not dependant on frame rate unless you require frame by frame editing which I do not believe you are.
Then back in the Expert workspace, import your video into the project, using the program's Add Media Files and Folders. When you drag the file for the first time to the Timeline, you will get an orange line over the content. That is that program telling you that you need to render the Timeline content to get the best possible preview. It is often a tip off that you are not using the right project preset. Ignore that. It is the 47.952 frame rate that is forcing the program to throw off that render indicator. Rendering the Timeline is for preview purposes only.
What is the quality of what we have up to his point, unrendered or rendered.
There is no 47.952 frame rate for Premiere Elements. Are you in a NTSC or PAL setup?
You may have to take the original into HandBrake or another program before import and change the frame rate to a constant 25, 30, 50, or 60 progressive frames per second.
More on that later.
Please review the comments to this point and then we can decide what next.

I did some homework on your questions and came up with some interesting answers which you might want to explore:
The Camera
a. Your camera Canon 500D is otherwise known as the Canon EOS Digital Rebel T1i SLR and records
1920 x 1080 at 20 fps
or
1280 x 720 at 30 fps
or
640 x 480 at 30 fps
Which one of the three is involved in your question? Or, is it all? And what Premiere Elements 7 project preset are you using? So, if you go the conversion to DV AVI route, you are going to end up with a frame size of 720 x 480 (NTSC) or 720 x 576 (PAL) whether you select DV AVI standard or widescreen.
I have downloaded Canon 500D samples of each of those types and have had no issues importing them importing them into Premiere Elements 7 with the appropriate project preset. Before I imported them into Premiere Elements 7, I checked out the video and audio codecs for each and found that they appeared to be the same..
1920 x 1080 at 20 fps

Audio Codec: sowt: 16-bit signed little-endian

1280 x 1080 at 30 fps

So that surfaces the question why are you getting no codec message and what to do about it.
a. Conversion of your AVC1.mov to DV AVI is one possibility if you want 720 x 480 pixels frame size. If you are after DV AVI 4:3, then Prism Converter should serve your purposes. If you are after DV AVI 16:9, then MPEG Streamclip is the route to follow since Prism does not do a DV AVI 16:9.
b. BUT, based on my results, you should not have to convert that Canon video before importing. So first I ask, do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer as well as Windows Media Player? Codecs used in Premiere Elements typically come from Windows and those that came along with the installation of a player. I have even seen sites for downloading free "AVC1 codec".
c. In order to check my results, you could try downloading the video samples that I used for my test and see if they import or do not import into your Premiere Elements.

AVCHD-like and AVCHD-Lite formats as well as the various wrappers .mov, .mp4 can be challenging for Premiere Elements, but in this case, IF I HAVE IDENTIFIED THE CAMERA THAT YOU ARE USING, there should be no problem importing these media into Premiere Elements 7. I have never and did not download the AVC1 video codec to get my successful results in this mini study.

Does anyone use Cineform Neoscene with Canon t2i footage and Premiere Elements 10?

I'm wondering if its worth the $100.00 investment - not looking to spend more money but I really want to avoid the hassle I've had with other editing programs...... I will be using MOV H.264 footage from Canon Elph 500 and Canon t2i and looking ffor the easiest workflow and I came across this item and am wondering if people have used it.

QT Pro can do Cut-and-Butt editing, and if that is all done, can Export without Retranscoding the footage.
For much more than that, however, it lacks the capabilities.
I do not know how well CineForm's NeoScene works with PrE, but before PrPro got full AVCHD native support, was very popular with the PrPro users. I cannot recall anyone having an issue with it, in that program, but might have missed a complaint, or two.

Has Premiere Elements 12 fixed the jittery playback issues from CS4?

I use Premiere Pro CS4 to edit my videos. I shoot with a Canon DSLR the 60D and import the video files straight into Premiere Pro without the extra transcoding step. (too much trouble to transcode the raw video with every clip). I get jittery and jerky motion in the left hand Source Monitor, when I make my in and out point edits. It plays fine once I have made my edits and render them in the right hand Program Monitor. I have heard that this has been fixed in version CS5 and higher. I can't afford to buy the CS program again, but could purchase Premiere Elements 12 the latest version. Would the jittery playback still be there in the left Source Monitor window of Elements 12, or has it been fixed in all forward versions newer than CS4?
Also if there is a way to make the imported video play smooth in the Source Monitor directly from CS4, without the transcoding process, I would like to hear about that for sure. Thanks for your help guys. Ken in Toronto.

I am surprised that the Premiere Pro group did not answer your Premiere Pro question before transferring your thread to the Premiere Elements Forum. The Premiere Pro question seems to be the immediate one. Your question seems to have been ignored by the Premiere Pro people
Also if there is a way to make the imported video play smooth in the Source Monitor directly from CS4, without the transcoding process, I would like to hear about that for sure.
An answer to that might avoid you having to get involved with a new program, Premiere Elements 12.
Nonetheless, I cannot offer you any guarantee about editing 60D footage in Premiere Elements 12. I would need lots of details of your specific video properties and computer environment to approach an answer. Your best and quickest answer will come from downloading and installing Premiere Elements 12 and determining its compatibility in your computer environment and if it meets your video editing needs.

Problem importing some .MOV files into Premiere Elements 11

Hello,
I am trying to import film footage into Premiere Elements 11 and am coming across a rather confusing problem. All of the footage is in .mov format and all of it was taken on the same device on the same day with the same settings.
When I try to import the footage, some files import ok, others will not import at all and I get a message saying 'The importer reported a generic error'. It seems very odd to me that some .MOV files are OK and others are not.
This same footage can easily be imported into Premiere Elements 10 and into Windows Movie Maker - which makes me think the issue is with Premiere Elements 11.
Does anyone have any ideas on this?

What model of camcorder is your video coming from and what format and resolution is it? Did you use Premiere Elements to get the video from the camcorder to your computer?
Have you ensured you have the latest version of Quicktime installed on your computer?

Can't see MTS files using mac os 10.9.5 and adobe premiere elements 12

I am using a MacBook Pro and OS is 10.9.5. Adobe premiere elements 12 does not recognize MTS files from my SD card. The OS does not see MTS files from the card as well...but...I have an MTS file on my desktop from before I upgraded from 10.6.8 that can be seen by both Adobe and the new OS.

What are you using as your Add Media/ for the import of your .mts on the SD?
Not sure if the following is a viable question, but....
What happens if you transfer the .mts on the SD card to your computer desktop and then try to
import the .mts into Premiere Elements 12 with its Add Media/Files and Folder/Project Assets?
But on reflection, if your OS and Premiere Elements are both not seeing the file, this does not
present as a Premiere Elements issue, rather an issue between the .mts format and your Mac computer.
If that is a valid observation, have you gotten any input on this from Apple?
Have you looked into converting these .mts files into H.264.mov or .mp4 before use?

I am recording from my computer screen with an elgato game capture card. Why is the video blurry when I import it to Premiere elements?

I am recording my computer screen with an elgato game capture card. When I play the unedited footage on my own computer, it is clear and crisp. When I import the footage into premiere elements, it becomes blurry. It becomes even blurrier when I save the edited video. How do I keep the video clear? How do I fix it?

At this point, if you could tell us the file extension of the file involved, that would give us a start while you are
gathering the rest of the details.
You can easily get some information for us from Properties for your imported video that is blurry in the Editor.
1. Click on Expert to get into the Expert workspace of Premiere Elements 13
2. If you have not already, import your file into the program using Add Media/Files & Folder/Project Assets.
3. Open Project Assets to see a thumbnail for the video that you just imported. Right click that thumbnail,
and select and click on Properties from the menu that opens.
4. Tell us what is listed there is Properties - it should look something like this one which is specific for one of my wmv files.
Your information will be specific to the file that you right clicked in your Project Assets.
From what you have written so far, yours should show
Image Size 1920 x 1080
Frame Rate either 59.94 or 60
Also, please go to Edit Menu/Project Settings/General, and tell us what you see for
Editing Mode
Timebase
Frame Size
Pixel Aspect Ratio
even if the fields look grayed out.
Your project settings may be contributing your Edit area previewing problems.
All of the above will keep us moving forward in the troubleshooting.

My videos keep being deleted by my premiere elements program. How do I fix this?

When I open the program and try to open my files they are all either not in existence anymore or have an offline message with a generic blank background where my video used to be. It seems to be corrupting the files so when I try to open them it comes up with a 'media offline' message.
P.s. Adobe is the WORST COMPANY for support I HAVE SEEN - it took me 10minutes to find how to actually get help and then I can't even, call or email a real person for support or get instant help - very frustrating!

This is not a programmed reply. I am not Adobe, but I am a real person who with past and current hands on experience with Premiere Elements troubleshooting. But, history cannot replace a here and now answer and success for you. So, if you are willing, let us try to resolve your Premiere Elements issues. The answers will be in the details...
1. What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
2. Are you aware that you cannot move, delete, or rename the files that you import in Premiere Elements project after you have saved closed the project?
If you do, you will be greeted with "Where is the file....?" messages. Are you getting these? Remember, what you import into Premiere Elements are copies of the originals on the computer hard drive. And, the project needs to be able to trace back to those originals where they were when they were first imported in the project.
3. All that being said and being in order, there are other scenarios for what you have run into. Where do you have the project's source media stored - an external hard drive that you may or may not be plugging in or out as needed? If you are using an external hard drive for our source media storage, do you see the drive letter of the external hard drive changing spontaneously from time to time? If using a Windows computer, is that external hard drive formatted NTFS or FAT32?
4. Even though your project is having problems with its source media, can you actually see the files in the location where "they should be" on the hard drive?
Since the project has only copies of the originals, the program is not going to damage your originals.
Your answers to the above will help us to suggest a troubleshooting strategy to resolve your issues. But, details, please.

Editing full HD with Premiere Elements 10

Hi,
I am a complete beginner in the business of editing, and would like some advice on editing full HD footage if anyone is kind enough to spare some time. I am trying to edit footage taken with DSLR camera but the image of the footage on Premiere elements 10 is seriously slow or at times stops moving, while the sound carries on normally, although fuzzy and breaking. The footage has been recorded with 1920 x 1080 25 fps. The files I have tried to edit are MOV files. I read that transcoding will help making the footage more editable - any ideas how this is done?
The PC I am using is Asus Notebook U46E Series,Windows 7, 64 bit. Processor: Intel(R) Core tm i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30 Ghz, RAM: 8 GB
Somebody suggested that Adobe may not support 64 bit, is this true?

2nd, based on a LOT of similar messages, your computer is simply not powerful enough to EFFECTIVELY edit DSLR video
You need an i7 CPU to decode that video at a reasonable editing speed, as well as 2 hard drives (or SSD boot device and one hard drive) so Win7 and software are separate from the video files

Trying to use only ONE Hard Drive for Video Editing
You are a music conductor, with a baton that you use to point to various parts of the orchestra... this is like Windows pointing to various parts of the hard drive to do Windows housekeeping or to load program segments for various functions
Now, at the same time and with the same hand... while still using the baton to conduct the orchestra... pick up a bow and play a fiddle... this would be doing something with your video file at the same time as all the other work
You as a person cannot do both at the same time with the same hand
A computer is a LITTLE better, in that it can switch from one kind of task to another very quickly... but not quickly enough for EASY video editing
You need AT LEAST two hard drives (separate drives, never a partition http://forums.adobe.com/thread/650708 for more) with Windows (or Mac OS) and software on your boot drive, and video files on a 2nd drive so the boot drive is not slowed down by trying to do everything

Unable to start my Adobe Premiere Element 10

I have been using my Adobe Premiere Element 10 often without any problem. I have Windows 7. I recently tried to open a project I played with the day before and when I click on this project it loads and then close without any message.
When I try to open a new project the same phenomena occurs. Tried to restart my computer and tried it again but it doesn't change anything.

Regarding your Premiere Elements 10 on Windows 7 (assumed 64 bit) computer....
Let us look at deleting the Premiere Elements 10 settings file which does not require opening the program. We will delete the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file found in the Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit path

and in the 10.0 Folder is the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file that you delete. If that does not work, then delete the whole 10.0 Folder in which the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file exists. Be sure to be working with Folder Option Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives active so that you can see the path cited.
Also, look at the issue with and without the antivirus disabled. There are been some serious problems related to McAfee recent updates.
Look for pile ups of preview files, conformed audio, and conformed video.
Have you verified at the web site of the manufacturer of you video card/graphics card that the driver version is up to date?
If it comes to a program uninstall/reinstall, do you have program installation files or installation disc with purchased serial number?
Please review the above and then let us know if any of it worked for you to resolve you Premiere Elements issues.

I am at the end of my tether here. This is absolutely ridiculous! How do you get to speak to Adobe? Three times I have gone to chat and nothing has been done and they keep referring me back to the forum!! Or to look at the list of options
One guy didnt even know what the organizer is? He sent me to a page for errors. I am not getting any errors

My story (again) is that I can load my new premiere elements 13 and add photos and videos into the library however when I tick the videos I want to build the video I get asked to sign in, which I do and then click agreed to the licenceing agreeemnet and then thats it. Premiere element 7 and canon 550 camera

I recently bought the canon 550 camera and tried to open the video footage on premiere element 7 but was unable to do so - an error message popped -up saying '...codec not installed.' I have downloaded the latest dng and it works for converting the raw images but not the video. The video footage is currently on my hard drive. Am I uploading the footage incorrectly or is element 7 not up to date with the canon 550 camera?

Video from still cameras like this usually needs to be converted --ideally to DV-AVIs -- before it can be used in Premiere Elements, as we discuss in the FAQs to the right of this forum.

Problem reading GoPro Hero Black 4 files (1080p 120 fps) on my iMac with Adobe Premiere Elements

I have a problem reading GoPro Hero Black 4 files (1080p 120 fps) on my iMac with Adobe Premiere Elements : the file is read but the quality is quite bad. When I watch it with other software like VLC or MPC, the quality is perfect but the video is sometimes slowed or there are some jumps in the reading.
What is the issue with this ?

This is easy. I do it all the time. FCPX ingests GoPro footage just fine. Optimize, and you're good to go.
BTW: A common hiccup occurs when dealing with over-cranked footage. (60fps or 120fps.) Be sure to "conform speed" to actuate the slo-mo. 'Tis also important to designate your project / timeline at 24fps or 30fps to realize the speed difference.
I've gotten burned in the past. I'll drag my over-cranked GoPro footage to the timeline. As it is the "first" clip layed into the timeline, the project assumes THAT speed as a default. (As per my preferences.) Thus, when I "conform speed," nothing seems to happen. That's because my project is displaying at the higher rate. A 60fps timeline showing footage shot at 60fps looks "normal speed."
FYI. (And disregard if you know all this.)

First few moments of the video render as just a black screen - Premiere Elements 9

Hello,
I'm putting together a short, 8-second demo clip of a particular moment of my project in Premiere Elements 9. The section involves two clips which were taken seperately, but are cut in half with the crop function so that they both play on the screen at once. There are also some position and brightness adjustments of one of the clips to ensure they match up.
However, I have begun seeing strange behaviour when I attempt to render the clip and as so far I have not been able to get a usable copy. When rendered as a .wmv, one of the two clips is inexplicably cropped from the bottom up to about a quarter of the height of the scene, despite not being so in the editor. Furthermore, when rendered as an MPEG, the format I would prefer the file to be in, although I do not get the first problem I get an issue where the first 20-23 frames of the video refuse to play in an external video player. I tried both windows media player and VLC. Instead, the section of the video appears as either a black screen, a black screen with a white line on it, or, if the video timeline is scrolled back to the start, the last frame viewed. The music clip which accompanies the video however still plays during this section, and the error is not seen at all in the editor. Oddly, if one of the rendered files is imported back into Premiere Elements 9, and played within the error, the 20-or-so frames will indeed play. It seems it is only the Premiere Elements editor that can play these frames.
I'm utterly at a loss here. I don't mind too much not being able to export as .wmv, as it is not my first choice, but if anyone could help me with the MPEG rendering I would be very grateful.
The source files are AVCHD (.mts) files, at a resolution of 1440x1080. There is only one "clip change" at the point where the video becomes viewable again, but this is merely where I have split the same clip to perform a brightness change, as I have many times in the video elsewhere.

As for the project settings, when I first imported the clips Elements informed me that my project preset was incorrect for the clips and automatically picked one to fit them, so I'm sure that that's all set up fine. All the footage is from the same camcorder, except for a splash screen image, of the correct resolution, which flashes up at the end.
I have used assets of the same format previously and with no isses.

Why is Premiere Elements putting a black border around my video?

I am getting by OK with editing my videos in Premiere Elements 3.0 (I know, the shame). However, when I have finished editing, I need to output to a specified frame size to fit a video screen on my web site. All videos that have been edited for me by third parties have been sized at 640x360 pixels. When I use this frame size to render/output my videos, I have a wide black border outside the actual video. The flv file that is being created seems to have had a border added around the actual movie. Here is an example: http://www.incisor.tv/Incisortvarchive.ph p?mid=109
This doesn't happen when I output to a Quicktime, the video fills the frame as it should.
What am I doing wrong, please?

Thanks for your responses. I am recording in SD, 16x9 using a Sony HVR-A1P camera. Up until now I have never tried to output to a specific frame size, as I've just been doing general stuff for my own personal use. However, on my web site, I have many, many movies which I have produced (and in some cases filmed), but which have all been edited for me by people that know what they are doing, and mostly in Final Cut. These have all been output to fit the specific video frame size that has been used on my web site, and that is a 640x360. There has never been an issue with black borders.
This movie (again, it's on my home page at www.incisor.tv) was the first time I have done everything myself. The Quicktime version is sized perfectly to the frame on my site, with no border, but the quality is very poor. Premiere Elements seems to be compressing too much, resulting in a poor quality file. Can I side-step the presets to create a less compressed, better quality (if bigger) file? If I can produce a better qualty QT file, this could be one solution to my problem, as many of the movies on my site are QTs.
The Flash file that I have created is great quality and streams beautifully, but has this border issue. Because I have never been worrying about outputing to specific frame sizes previously, I have never gotten into matching source footage with the project's preset. I've just been happy with the movies I have output. Now I have to output to a specific size, where are the parametres set? If I do a 'check properties' inside Premiere on the avi file that has come out of the camera, the image size is apparently 720x576, which is strange, because that is 4:3 rather than 16:9, which is how the movie was filmed.
This is probably quite easy to resolve, and I'll spend some more time looking at it now, but if anybody can help me short cut the process, that would be great.
