GoPro stills for a time lapse in iMovie??
Hi,
I have about 400 photos that I took with my gopro on a timer and have a cool time lapse....if I can figure out how to do it.
I am using iMovie 10.0.2 and have the photos in my library. How do I put the clips into the movie so I can show them and the time lapse?
Thank you in advance.
You need iMovie 06.
(it's a free download for iLife 08 owners)

I was really hoping to be able to build a time lapse movie with iMovie 11. But, it looks as if it isn't possible. There are two big issues:
1. It would appear that there is a maximum number of 'clips' that iMovie 11 will accept. So, when importing still images, iMovie freezes at the maximum. I'm not sure what that miximum is, but it's somewhere between 500 and 1000. Does anybody know?
2. It would appear that the shortest period that I can allocate to an individual image is 0.04. So, each image lasts for four frames. It means that the effective frame rate for the time lapse is 6.25 frames per second (assuming a 25fps PAL movie).
It's so annoying. It was possible to develop time lapse movies with iMovie HD. It took a bit of messing around, but it was possible! I can't seem to find anyway to do it in iMovie 11. Anybody got any suggestions? Thanks. I'll look into getting Quicktime Pro ... although I was hoping to take advantage of iMovie so that I could interweave time lapse footage with standard footage.
I did manage to come up with a workaround, but it isn't particularly elegant.
I found that I could import around 500 still images without a problem. Before importing, I adjusted the project properties so that Photo Duration was set to 1 and Initial Photo Placement was set to 'fit'. I then dragged the images to the project and they imported. Once they were all imported, I adjusted the clip properties so that the clip duration was 0.04 (the shortest duration I could get it to accept) and made sure that I checked the 'apply to all clips) box.
I now had a string of 500 images at durations of 0.04, and I exported this as an HD quicktime movie.
I then tried to do the same thing again, but found a weird anomaly and iMovie wouldn't import clips. On a hunch, I deleted the project. Exited iMovie. Emptied the trash. Restarted iMovie. Opened a new project, and tried importing the next 500 stills.
It worked!
So, it's a bit of a fuss, but after each import of 500 stills, I exported an HD movie then deleted the project, emptied the trash, and started a new project.
Eventually, I'd got through 1,799 images.
So, finally, I created an entirely new project, and imported the four movies that I'd created. I imported at 'full' quality to try to avoid as much degredation as possible. I was then able to bring the four movies into the new project, speed them up (x4) and I've got a half-way decent time lapse.
It isn't perfect, but it does provide a method of using iMovie 11 to generate time-lapse segments within broader movies.
I will try Quicktime Pro too.
Does anybody have any suggestions for best export settings from Quicktime so that the time lapse could then be imported into iMovie 11? -

Batch Process For HDR Time Lapse?
Hi,
I'd like to batch process a sequence of 830 photos. I basically want to make two copies of each - one with less exposure (darker) and one with more (lighter) so at the end I'll have 2490 images (in separate projects). Incidentally, something I've noticed is that when selecting one photo for adjustments it automatically duplicates the photo alongside the original, I'd like to temporarily disable this so I can select all the photos in one project and adjust them as one so they all turn out the same. In case you haven't guessed already it's for an HDR time lapse film I'm making. I'll then be taking the images to photomatix for more processing - a whole other forum to visit then...
Any ideas?
Thanks.Cecilstar wrote:

No reason I know this can't be done. Lift and stamp adjustment.

Aperture→Prefs→Advanced→{uncheck "Create new versions when making adjustments"}.

What's the subject? I'd like to see the film.

Correct project settings for Brinno time lapse cameras?
Hi,
I am totally new to all this so please forgive if an obvious answer. I have been doing a building project time lapse using some time lapse cameras by Brinno. They are the TLC200's (http://www.brinno.com/html/TLC200.html). I am about to start a new project to put together the final timelapse but have no idea what type project settings to start it as. They claim to record in 1280x720 HD and output a raw avi file of the time lapse sequence after filming (each frame i think is captured as jpeg). You pre set the number of frames it takes (eg 1 every 30 minutes like I have) and what frame rate it puts the sequence of individuale captures together and outputs to the avi file (I choose 10 fps). That is all the informatoin I have. Any ideas?
Many thanks
[I though I would also mention it is ultimately going to be around a 1min30s - 2 min video at the end to be posted on youtube.]First, you need to find out exactly what is inside your file
Read Bill Hunt on a file type as WRAPPER http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037
What is a CODEC... a Primer http://forums.adobe.com/thread/546811
What CODEC is INSIDE that file? http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037
Report back with the codec details of your file, use the programs below... a screen
shot works well to SHOW people what you are doing

For PC http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en or http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
For Mac http://mediainspector.massanti.com/
Also... if your "raw avi file" uses the H.264 codec... it will not work
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/854115
Also... you mention jpeg... which may or may not work

Time Lapse in iMovie 10.0.3
I have been searching for this answer for 2 days now and I cant find it...How do I change the speed of a clip in iMovie 10.0.3? In previous releases, I could doubleclick on the clip and the inspector window would pop up and I could change it there. Not so in iMovie 10.0.3. I can change the effect (crop) but I cant change the duration. I know I am doing something wrong but I cant for the life of me figure it out.
I agree with all of you who are irritated by how difficult it is to get to this setting -- if you compare the way iMovie has developed in recent years, it's clear that Apple is removing functionality more than it is making the user experience easier. I saw a Youtube video on how to do this in iMovie 9 and it's incredibly easy. Not only that, but you can get it down to less than 1 second per photo. I'd like to get to 0.1 seconds per photo. Can anyone help me with that, or is it impossible in iMovie 10?
Thanks! -
IMovie '11, still images as frames for time lapse problem
As strange as this may seem, I cannot find a way to change the stills I import to just be 1 frame each in iMovie '11. That is, I have 30 still images (a time lapse) that I want to put together for a 1 second sequence (i.e. 30 frames per second). The slowest I can seem to get is down to is 1 frame per second which gives me a total time of 30 seconds, which makes it useless.
Are still images able to be set to 1 image per frame? Am I missing something?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
-MattYou can do this in iMovie but it is quite cumbersome.
Long-time contributor Jon Walker created this Video Tutorial to show how to do this.
The Tutorial is for iMovie 08, but I verified that it still works for iMovie 11.
There are better tools for Stop Motion, including iStopMotion and QuickTime Pro. After doing it in iMovie, you may see why. -
There's been at least one post on this, but I have not seen any resolution.
I wish to import a few thousand stills created with my Sony HDR HC3 shot at 1 still per minute (or 10 minutes). I'd like end up with a HD movie, 30 frames per second, with each still providing one frame. Importing through iMovie HD gives various results. I try to "apply" 1 or 2 or 3 frames to each photo, but end up with 9.29 seconds per still photo. Basically, the media/photo import in iMovie seems designed for movies with embedded stills, not time-lapse. Is this the way to make true time-lapse in iMovie HD (6.0.2)?
If iMovie HD can't do this, is there other software that will package stills into HD video format at this fast rate?Karl,
After thanking you and reporting that your suggestion for importing stills at 1 frame per image worked well, I find today that I can't get it to work again! Today I still get the imports set to 9.29 seconds each. Once this morning an import came in with 2 frames duration. In all cases, I selected a previously imported clip whose duration had been set the way you suggested to 1 frame. So this variable behavior makes me think that the KB code may be more buggy than just the text box.
Just to be sure I'm not misunderstanding you...I'm using File/Import command, and iMovie is in the "Clips" mode. The selected clip with the 1 frame duration is selected in the clips bin before importing a new still.
I feel a bit silly reporting that a computer is producing variable results, but it seems to be, and I'm no neophyte to computers.
Any ideas?

iMac G4 Mac OS X (10.4.7) -
My Gopro camera has a time-lapse option/feature that takes one photo every X seconds. You can then import those photo stills onto your computer, which I have done. For a 30 minute time-lapse "video," I've collected a little over 1000 stills and have uploaded them into Premiere Elements 10's Project area. Is there a way to move more than one still photo at a time from the Project area to the Timeline? The only way I can see how to move the stills to the timeline is to drop each individual photo into the next frame, which, as you can imagine, is going to take forever. Isn't there a way to select all or move all stills from the project area to the timeline without having to click on each individual still...then move it over to the box, then unclick..then move it back...1000 times? Please tell me there is a way...please...
If your photos are named so that the will appear in alpha-numeric order in the Media panel, you can grab the entire block at once and drag them all to the timeline.
BTW, before you bring them into the project:
1) Ensure that your photos are no larger than 1000x750 pixels in size to avoid overloading the program.
2) Go to Edit/Preferences/General and set the still photo duration. You can set them to be one frame each, for instance, to create a stop motion animation sequence. -
How to mix time lapse with still images and imported movies ?
Hello
I have been shooting photos (time lapse with Camera Pro) and movies with a Nokia N8 and would love to use iMovie to mount all that.
Unfortunately, for the time lapse I cannot get the duration of the photos to 0.03s, it just won't accept it. I have been looking around the forum and could only find sort of solutions when you have a transition or effect on the pictures but not when they are just fit to the screen...
So now the time lapse looks much slower and broken than the movie itself... and it does not look nice.
Another way would be to make the time lapse with QT Pro and then import it but I am affraid I am loosing quality in the process.
Anybody knows how to fix this duration problem ?
Thank you in advance for any helpful answer.
Petri
Mac OS 10.6.8
iMovie : 9.0.4Able, Jim,
thanks a lot, both solutions work just fine.
Take the first image, adjust the Effects, copy it, select the other images and past attributes
and
just put all images together, make a new sequence and use that first sequence as nested sequence and put the effects on that -

If you are ONLY using Still Images, and no Video, then you will want to determine your delivery, say DVD-Video, or BD, or posting to YouTube in SD, or HD. That will determine the Project Preset that you will choose.
Let's say that you will wish to deliver the Project via a BD (Blu-ray Disc). If so, then you can choose a 1920 x 1080 Project, at either 30 (29.97) FPS for NTSC, or 25 FPS for PAL.
I would Scale all of my images to 1920 x 1080 in Photoshop, or Photoshop Elements. This can be easily done with an Action for an entire folder of Images. See this ARTICLE for some tips.
As for Import, there are probably two ways to handle that, but someone will have to give you exact instructions on the second, if PrE now supports Importing Numbered Stills Sequences, like PrPro does. I believe that it now does, but use PrPro for such, that I have not explored it. The other is pretty straight forward. When I Scale my Still Images, I number them sequentially, so that file ____00001 is followed by ____00002, etc. through the last Image in the sequence.
This next part might take some experimentation, depending on the intervals, that you have set your Go-Pro to shoot, and the "look," that you want. For pure Time-Lapse, a Duration of 1 Frame is probably what you want, but if you wish a bit more of a Stop-Motion look, then you might want, say 3 - 5.Frames. For most of my work, I will go with the 3 - 5 Frames, and use very short Cross-Dissolves between each Image. After you have done the experimentation, go to Edit>Preferences and set the Still Image Duration. Then, Import the Stills, or if possible in PrE, Import the Numbered Still Sequence, which, in PrPro, will allow one to add the Cross-Dissolve automatically. Remember, also in Edit>Preferences, set the Video Transition Duration too.
Good luck, and let us know what works best for you. Also, keep an eye out, because if PrE does support Numbered Still Sequences, that will save you some time. Steve, Neale, John T., or another will verify that PrE has that capability, and where to locate it.

Any ideas on how to AUTO resize/crop/perspective etc two (or more) portraits, according to one common item? (lets say for example eyewear, or the eyes, or any other object that could use as a guide item)
The purpose is to create an aging time-lapse.
Well the same technique could be used for every time-lapse i guess
Thanks in advance!Well PS almost does this kind of operations with photomerge.
I suspect identifying elements in two images taken less than a second apart from roughly the same position and aligning them is considerably »easier« than identifying and aligning functional anatomical units in images taken at vastly different times and possibly even different lighting consitions.
One might be able to semi-automate the task, I guess.
One could for example manually declare the reference points (as PathPoints for example) and then automate the aligning – still seems pretty difficult to me, though. -
Hello,
Is there a way to export in Lightroom for a time lapse. I have about 700 images and I want to make a movie out of it. I have the Suite Production package so Premiere is at my disposal. I just am having problems with the correct output.Premier can import image files in most formats. I usually use psd, 8 bit, sRGB, sharpen for screen at minimum long edge at 1280 or 1920 (for HD) dependent on how you ouput your video and let the video editor do the rendering to size. If it is for HD video you may wish to crop the image to a 16:9 ratio. Just place each image on the time line and then sort out how many frames each image should occupy etc. in the video editor.

Has anyone created a time-lapse video with Final Cut Pro X?
I've taken a series of 2,631 I'd like to create a time-lapse video from. The process has been excruciating so far. I'm getting tons of spinning beachballs. I'm running Lion, 10.7.1.
Before I do any more hair pulling, has someone else out there successfully used FCP X for creating time-lapse videos? Any tips you can offer?I love using FCPX for time lapse movies, here is an example:
http://vimeo.com/27460065
My workflow is as follows:
1. I import the photos to QT player 7 as an image sequence
2. I save the resulting movie in QT7 in Prores HQ, keeping the original movie size (eg. 3500x1940)
3. I import the movie to a 1920x1080 project in FCPX.
4. I can now easily create pans and zoom ins without losing quality.
I hope this helps.

Time-lapse still photos to IMovie???
Greetings.
I have a Nikon D2x that will shoot time lapse photography. I tried a test of 30 images (one second of video). So I have a folder of JPG images which I then resized to 640x480 at 72dpi.
At first I tried to import these stills into IM just by dragging and dropping my pictures into the clips window to the right of the viewer. It took a while for these to "render" but when they finished, I placed a few of the images in the time line.
I pressed play, thinking that each photo would show for 1/30th of a second, but what happened instead, stayed on the first photo, did a pan out, and then went to the next photo.
My question, (and maybe IMovie is the wrong app for this) is how do you take a sequence of still photos and have them play each for 1/30 or 1/24 of a second so that I can see the out come of my time lapse photography?
Thank you for your help.
Jonathanhow do you take a sequence of still photos and have them play each for 1/30 or 1/24 of a second so that I can see the out come of my time lapse photography?
The easiest is to use QuickTime Pro ($30, from Apple). It lets you import a series of images to a movie, creating just what you want. You can tell it to import the images at 30 frames per second or any duration you want.
It can be done in iMovie too, but there are some hurdles. One is that iMovie lets us import a photo with a duration no shorter than 3 frames per second (shown as 0:00:03).
But there is a back door. See this topic:

I pressed play, thinking that each photo would show for 1/30th of a second, but what happened instead, stayed on the first photo, did a pan out, and then went to the next photo.
That happened because the Ken Burns settings in the Photo Settings window were set to zoom in. Turn off the Ken Burns checkbox and import the image as a still instead of an animated video clip.
