Gorilla Glass is worthless

My Lumia 920 is a month old.  It fell out of my coat pocket just 2 feet off the ground and shattered the glass.  I had a Samsung Captivate with Gorilla Glass for two years.  It probably fell to the ground 30 times and never even scratched.  I saw the videos online of the guy running over the 920 with his car, batting it with a 2x4, dropping it multiple times from various heights, and even bashing it with a hammer.  I think mine was defective.  AT&T and Nokia say - too bad so sad. Got quotes of $130 - $300 to repair. I will try the $130 first.

I had my Nokia 928 less than a month after switching from a HTC phone, and it slipped from my hand and hit the ground on the bottom right hand corner. The screen immediately cracked halfway up the display and a piece of the screen was lost. I was understandably dismayed that the "unbreakable" gorilla glass had shattered so easily after my HTC withstood 10 times more impact than that during the 2 years that I used it. The screen still worked, so I continued to use it while I decided whether or not it was worth paying $100 in addition to the monthly insuance fee to replace it. I literally sat it down on my desk at work, and the screen cracked all the way up. I might mention that the actual casing of the phone never sustained a scratch, crack, or damage of any kind. Only the gorllia glass. What does that tell you??
I am sure that I will NEVER buy a Nokia again, and I will not replace my Nokia, but instead go back to my HTC that worked flawlessly for two years. Never again.

  • Is there a gorilla glass 2 on macbook pro retina display?

    hi there,
like a month ago i bought a Macbook pro Retina, and I have been asking myself or there is a gorilla glass 2 on macbook pro retina display?
    cheers,
    Joseph

The plastic of the LCD is surprising tough, there is no reason to coddle it. It resists touching and hand grease very well. Light abrasion is not a problem. Avoid using solvent based cleaners such as alcohol as they will attack the surface if not wiped off immediately.
Remember the life expectancy of these machines is something like 8 years, by then it should be 100% depreciated. Use it up, wear it out.

  • Is iPad Mini with Retina display screen a gorilla glass?

Is iPad Mini with Retina display screen a gorilla glass?

No it's definitely not gorilla glass... I don't know if it's even hardened glass. My iPad Mini's screen broke the other day with the slightest bump. When I submitted it to Apple to be fixed (I assumed it was weakened in production or something) they said it would cost $225 to replace it. So yeah, be very very very careful with your iPads... don't let your kids touch them or anything (buy them Kindle Fires). I'm going to attempt to fix my iPad Mini's screen myself (lest I cut myself). If that doesn't work I guess I'll have to move on to Android tablets with gorilla glass...

  • How durable is Gorilla Glass and do I even have Gorilla Glass on my I Phone 4?

Can I get away without using a screen protector? I currently have an Invisa Sheild screen protector on my I phone.  Can I remove it and not have to worry about scratching the screen?

Apple has never stated, as far as I know, that the glass used in iPhones is Gorilla Glass (a trademark of Corning). It is, nonetheless, quite durable.

  • Does the iphone 5 have gorilla glass?

does the iphone 5 have gorilla glass?

Apple has not said what the screen is made of nor the vendor of the material. Most likely it is a an aluminosilicate glass from some vendor, but whether it's from Corning or some other glassmaker is unknown.

Nokia, how it is possible you used Gorilla Glass in Lumia 720, but higher model - Lumia 820 does not have it???

Maybe check first what is under "Contact Us" link on Nokia support site????
    1. Facebook link - I do not use
    2. Twitter link - I do not use
    3. Link to this forum. So I came here directly from nokia support link on Nokia.com under support for lumia 820
Did YOU read guidelines from link you posted??? I see not!
    So couple of quotes:
"Here you can discuss Nokia products and Ovi services" - I wanted to discuss product, so this is correct forum!!! Was I expecting my screen will be replaced for gorilla??? No! Just wanted to discuss!!!
For sure you did not see this point:
"4. Show respect. Please ensure that all of your posts contribute to the supportive atmosphere of the board. "Flaming" or disrespecting other board users is not allowed. For more specific information on what Nokia considers disrespectful or inappropriate, see below. "
You wrote @simply because the 820 is not associated with a 'gorilla' does not make it inferior to lower models@ - IT DOES. Gorilla is known as scratch resistant, tough glass. This place these screens much higher than others.
Now, show me any OFFICIAL nokia statement that glass used in Lumia 820 is scratch resistant or is anyhow more resistant for damages than any other glass??? Somehow I cannot find official statement. So all other statements are rumours only.
This is link to official Lumia 820 spec:
    http://www.nokia.com/ie-en/products/phone/lumia820/specifications/
, somehow I do not see any statement that screen has improved resistance.
"The forum team includes technical experts from Nokia, who monitor their respective areas on the forum. Their main task is to make sure that the right people at Nokia know what is discussed here, but they may also participate in the discussions and publish information from Nokia about the issues discussed here. They are labelled as "Technical Experts" and bear a Nokia logo."
So not only user-to-user but also user-to-nokia experts that are able to place official statements and explanations!!!
You should watch your mouth before placing these kind of statements @another whiner. having limited knowledge can be a bad thing. having no knowledge at all can be embarrassing.@.
Pretending you are smart doesn't make you smart at all. It is only your imagination.

  • N9 Gorilla Glass - bad quality?

I have my N9 for more than a week now and I can see very small scratches on the gorilla glass. I use the phone with great care and never put it face down somewhere. I also have it in a pocket separated from other things such as keys or coins. I'm really disappointed about the quality because I have other Nokia devices with gorilla glass for more than a year and they don't have one single scratch. And I used them a lot and the same way I use the N9 now. I think the N9 gorilla glass is of very bad quality. Anyone else seeing like small spots and scratches on the N9?

Nope, not on mine. I got a few scratches on the display of E7, which I didn't know where come from. Could be grains of sand in my pocket or something like that.
If you think that your screen suffers from a fault, visit a Nokia care point and tell them about it, if you're lucky they might replace the screen, but gorilla glass can get scratches too, like any other screens. So most likely there aren't anything you can do other tha protect it even more carefully.

  • Gorilla glass is breakable -- ploy to switch to Edge?

I've had 4 phones on my account total with the Gorilla Glass.  The first one I had for about 14 months and upgraded back when Verizon allowed the primary to upgrade every 12 months and wasn't trying to get us to basically rent our phones with their newest bull gimmick VerizonEdge.  The Gorilla Glass on that phone worked the whole 14 months.  I made my boys get MotoX's because of the Gorilla Glass.  Since the introduction of Verizon Edge, I couldn't upgrade my phone and at 14 months--bam!!  A drop from a foot broke it.  Refurbished from the insurance, bam!  A foot drop broke it--by its serial number it was 18 months old.  My boys' phones both at 14 months--bam!  Small drop and worse than other cell phones.  A chemist friend suspects the Gorilla Glass' "strength" properties breakdown over time and becomes less "strong" than other tempered glass.
So Verizon uses my complaint to try and get me on the Verizon Edge plan?!?!  As if.  I'm not renting the phone at more than my 2 year contracts.  The Verizon Edge plan sucks when you compare the additional cost of your "rented" phone.  It's all marketing mayhem with no real emphasis on customer service anymore.  They know the Gorilla Glass is failing and are using it to manipulate us into spending more money on something we won't even "own".

My 21 month old Droid Razr Maxx HD with gorilla glass is working just fine. No scratches, no cracks.
It seems you have something a foot from the ground with possibly a slanted surface which you shouldn't place a phone on.

  • Nokia Lumia 820 Glass Smashed No Gorilla Glass

I bought this phone, only received it a few days ago and today its broken, i dropped the phone once and the whole glass is smashed now.
Was quite disapointed about this because i was under the imprssion that it had gorilla glass only to find the glass gets smahshed when dropped from a low level around knee level. Its also disapointed as i was an owner of Lumia 900 which had gorilla glass which i had dropped a few times since i had it and it never got a crack or anything. Very disapointed with Nokia as i went for the 820 because of the changable covers and the SD card and slightly smaller size. If i had known about no gorilla glass i'd never have got the phone, what a waste of money, i recommend not buying this phone as the screen broke way too easy.
What i'd like to know is how much do new screens cost for this phone, and i mean genuine ones from Nokia? or would i need to go to a care point? or are they available online somewhere on Nokia's website?
    thanks

Well I come home and opened my door on Friday night and my 820 Lumia drop from about knee height, put it on charger when got inside next morning went to get phone not working I found it had cracked Screen. Ok was the drop last night. So here I am with a $658 product from Nokia that's been made with little thought for the consumer. A phone that cracks the glass from a minor drop. The glass goes right to the edge of the phone, the phone is as heavy as a house brick.
I have taken it to be repaired it will be ready in 3 days at a grand cost of $180.00... I need my phone going thats why I brought it. Nokia Don't Care is a good Slogan, I took the phone back to Harvey Norman they didn't care, just advised me take it to a phone repairer in Penrith to get it fixed faster. Let's see what happens.
I will send Nokia a Bill for the repair because of the way they have designed this machine it is not fair to the consumer to have to have a weak machine like this. And I wished it would have happened within 21 Days I would have took it back to Harvey Norman, under consumer law you can not sell defected machines like this to people. Glass screens breaking so easly is not accpetable. It's daylight robbery, there working like crooks. I am in the right mind to take it all back to Harvey Norman and let them have the Phone and Optus Account as I only had it three months.
I should ring the Police. If some one steals something valuable they can goto goal. If a company like nokia robs you because of faulty products  they just ignore our complaints.
I am really cranky withnokia because of the Screen on this phone

  • Lumia 800 - Gorilla Glass

    Hai,
I've been going through specs on several sites and cannot confirm if the Lumia 800 which technically uses same body as the N9 has the shiny Gorilla Glass?
No NFC, uSD, Front Facing Camera (or 3G video calling to say), HDMI, USB on the go like the N8 (my current phone) are still ok not a huge deal breaker imo as the Lumia 800 still looks awesome and has WP7 which I have been waiting for a proper hardware manufacturer to make one so far to actually get one.
But Gorilla Glass is one important aspect for me due to the extended nature of the display which will indeed make it prone to all those unwanted daily usage scratches.
    Solved!

Not to get too off topic here, but I wouldn't call Symbian Anna a huge step forward (or even a major update) and Belle has been "coming" since I bought the **bleep** phone. It took more months than expected for PR 1.1 to be released, and 1.2 took what seemed like an eon and included mostly minimal performance/functionality tweaks and almost no UI changes (except for turning off my auto-text-finder in messaging as default for some stupid reason). It was, in all respects, more of a disappointment than the saviour update I was expecting (new browser, stability fixes, faster camera, updated music player, refreshed UI). And as for Nokia Labs - yes, they write some great applications. Its a shame that the app store isn't full of the same great application (or ANY for that matter). I think the best app I managed to buy was the JoikuSpot tethering software (which should've been a free app that was built into the phone ecosystem), and that's just sad.
Don't get me wrong, the N8 is the best phone I've ever used and will go down alongside the N96 as one of my favourite nokias ever made, but it will always be tied to the memory that "hey, this could've been 10 times better and 10 times more successful". I remember promises about the N96's networked gaming, though I don't remember any actually decent games being released, ever.
I want to also point out that whilst the N8 is the best phone I've used, the other phones that I've used are all just above average (iPhone 3/4/S, Galaxy S2, Desire, Galaxy, Storm, Bold) and are nothing special in any of their own rights. Sure, they're relatively better than most other phones, and some have this nifty feature or that nifty feature, but no single phone (except perhaps the 4/4S) is actually a solid release, and most other phones are sh** anyway so who cares if those phones are better. Better than what? **bleep**? The technology still has growing pains, and it won't be until Nokia release a 4G N-series phone with WP8, Skydrive, 32gb SSD, 1gb RAM, 1.6ghz single/double chip w/ 10 mpx CZ camera & 1080p recording that STILL retains a full day/two days battery life and interfaces directly with the files on my home Windows 8 PC that the market will be, in my opinion, mature and ready to take hold of the consumer's attention again. Unfortunately, there's this mindset that the "consumer" is an idiot and needs to be told what they want, and heaven forbid if they voice any ideas for improvement - "you don't know better than us!"
Back to the Lumia 800 - again, I totally understand from a business perspective why this phone is being released and marketed, I do, and it will make some money and will effectively reposition that imaginary thing called "public opinion" (ie: the media). What it won't do is get everybody talking about Nokia's new line of Windows phones for longer than a few weeks. You guys had a major opportunity (basically free advertising with the excitement around WP7 + Nokia) to completely revolutionize the tech industry's image of your products by releasing a truly different and solid WP7 phone. Instead you released a gutted N9. Nice.
My apologies if I'm ranting (and I think I may be) - I'm just passionate about Nokia's product offering and find it extremely frustrating that such a large and experienced company keeps making the same mistakes over and over again (alienating their long-term supporters in the process). Grow up, you've been in the business a while now!

  • Gorilla glass of Lenovo models

do S850 & S860 have gorilla glass? which are the models of lenovo have gorilla glass????

If you look at some of the internet stories this may not be correct. There seems to be evidence that Apple does indeed use Gorilla glass for iPhones but it is not widely publicized by Apple or Corning.

  • Gorilla Glass on iPhone 4

    Hi everyone!
I have the iPhone 4 with an ifrogs alum case, and a ZAGG invisible shield (military spec) protection for the Gorilla glass. This glass protector is good for protection but no feel. The screen feels "rubbery" and when iPhone is off has an orange peel like "haze", similar to a painted surface of a car, only clear.
I want the feel and graphic quality of the glass back. However I also work in a very hot shop and it resided in my pants front pocket facing my thigh. Will sweat (salts) break down Gorilla glass (etching)?
Should I keep the protection on the glass? The case is staying that makes sense due to the rear glass being standard temper.
I really want the phone in the case and the feel of the Gorilla glass and sharpness of the display.
Can I take the "rubbery" shield off?!
    Thoughts?...

I am with you Jeff! I work as an electrician so I can work in a pretty industrial environment to the office so I like the option of protecting it. I was keeping an eye open here on the forum to see how the glass holds up. In the first day I didn't have a case I put a very small scratch on the back of it but you have to shine it in the sun just right to see it. Plus the back is black so it stands out more when you shine it in the sun. Can't see it by just looking at the phone. I have a little OCD too so that doesn't help. ; )

  • Ipad mini retina and gorilla glass

Do anyone knows "FOR SURE", not i think, or someone told me, with a link to it, if ipad mini has or doesnt have gorilla glass?
I dont want to hear your stories, feelings, etc. Just the facts maam!

It does not have Gorilla Glass. It uses a different type of glass but with similar if not identical properties. If you did a bit of Google searching you probably would have found this on your own.

Thank you. I will have to sell it on Ebay and hopefully get some money for it I'm so sad about it. I hate losing money like that.
It actually seemed fine in the fist 2 weeks, but this image retention problem seems to have got worse and worse in time. I can now barely do anything for more than a couple of minutes and it's burnt in. And I can see it now if I play a movie. Luckily it goes after a few minutes more.
My main problem is the dirty look though, and I didn't notice that until a month or so after I bought the screen. Some things really bring out the worst of it, and most of the time it isn't noticeable. But if I'm playing a game that looks bad on the screen, the entire time I am playing that game will look bad.
    Oh well
