Got a 3hr iMovie Project, fit onto 1 DL DVD?

Hey,
I've recently started transfering all home movies on to DVD.
Thing is, one VHS tape, now in iMovie is 3 hours long. The iMovie project weighs in at around 30Gb.
Would this project fit onto a Dual Layer DVD when sent to iDVD?
Any help is appreciated,
Cheers
*Maybe a compression setting? But how does the movie industry get films like Lord of the Rings onto DVD's?

says the disks are 7.7Gb (no disk in drive),
It's saying your project is that big. Nothing to do with a DL disk.

  • High Quality HD footage Need to compress/export to fit onto a DVD!

So, basically I have 58 min. worth of HQ, HD footage (with burnt in time code) that I need to fit onto a playable DVD (that will be burnt using DVD Studio Pro)
Normally, I'd just export using QuickTime movie - however after doing so, my file size was 89.52 GB, which obviously is huge.
What is the best way to go about compressing or exporting this so that it will fit onto a DVD or Dual Layer DVD.
I need to send this to the client, and the quality really doesn't have to be amazing, as this is just for them to view and choose which footage they want to keep, etc. The quality need to be decent enough to view, essentially.
I used FCP and DVD Studio pro -- but really just basic stuff for the most part. I am not super familiar with compressor and all that lingo, so the simplest way to go about this would be best, ha.
The raw footage was shot using a SONY HDCAM 1080i 59.97 (16x9) - if this helps.
Digitized the footage using pro-ress in FCP...so yeah I don't what other info might be needed, sorry.

#42 - Quick and dirty way to author a DVD
Shane's Stock Answer #42 - David Roth Weiss' Secret Quick and Dirty Way to Author a DVD:
The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:
    1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.
    2. Open DVDSP, select the "graphical" tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
    3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
    4. Now, select the green one, right click on it amd select the top option "first play".
    5. Now drag your QT from the broswer and drop it on top of the green monitor.
    6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the "general tab" in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select "16:9 pan-scan."
    7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.
    THATS ALL!!!
NOW...if you want a GOOD LOOKING DVD, instead of taking your REF movie into DVD SP, instead take it into Compressor and choose the BEST QUALITY ENCODE (2 pass VBR) that matches your show timing. Then take THAT result into DVD SP and follow the rest of the steps. Except you can choose "16:9 LETTERBOX" instead of PAN & SCAN if you want to see the entire image.

  • How do I include the photos in a imovie project to the finished dvd so the users can have access to them?

I've included alot of old photos in an iMovie project and would like to include them on the finished DVD I create with iDVD. I woud like the users to be able to have access to them so they can print them, store them on their own computer or whatever they would like to do. How would I do this?

You do this by creating a DVD-ROM section on your DVD. See this explanation from iDVD Help.
Adding files to the DVD-ROM portion of a disc
You can let viewers copy files directly from your DVD by adding the files to the DVD-ROM portion of the disc. These files are burned onto the DVD and are accessible when the disc is viewed on either a Windows PC or a Macintosh computer, but not a DVD player.
You can add any kind of file to the disc. For example, if your disc contains a slideshow, you can add the image files to the DVD-ROM portion of the disc so viewers can download them to their own computers and print them. You can also add a file containing your movie production notes and other “extras.”
To manually add files to the DVD-ROM part of your disc:
Choose Advanced > Edit DVD-ROM Contents.
    The DVD-ROM Contents window opens.
Click Add Files, or click New Folder first if you want to create a folder to put the files in.
Browse to select your files or folders, then click Open to add them to the disc.
You can also drag files directly to the DVD-ROM Contents window. When you are done, just close the window.
When you add a file to the DVD-ROM portion of your disc, before you burn the disc the project contains just a reference to the location of the file on your hard disk, not the actual file. So if you delete a file from your computer or move it from its location after adding it to the DVD-ROM contents, you get a “File not found” message when you try to burn your disc. You can either remove these missing files from the DVD-ROM contents or find them on your computer and put them back in the original location so iDVD can access them.
As you add files to the DVD-ROM contents, be sure to check the DVD Capacity meter in the Project Info window to find out how many gigabytes of disc space are being used. The Capacity meter shows the disc space taken up by the video portion of the disc as well as the DVD-ROM portion.

  • Why won't 120min SD video fit onto standard DVD disk ?

I've made the leap from IDVD to Studio Pro and have come up against a problem ! From the timeline in final cut I have sent a 1hr 20 min video to the compressor. I compressed at a 90 min setting, then when I imported it to DVD Studio Pro it came out at 2 Gig. After combining music and menus it came out at nearly 5 Gig ! why is this ? Can anyone help !

I am experiencing this same exact problem right now. I created a project in FCP that came out to be an hour and 17 minutes. I ran it through Compressor and got it down to 2gb (originally it was 16gb). I imported a slide show that I created in a program called Fotomagico. I then exported the slideshow as a QT movie file. Then dragged that into DVDSP. Like the original poster said, I was showing 2gb on my meter then I decided to change the menu template layout to something else and my meter jumped up to 4.8 gigs. After formatting, I tried to burn the DVD and it kept stopping in the middle of the encoding process and spitting my DVD back out.
I haven't been able to figure out why its doing this. I went from using the Marquee menu to the Leader menu.
Do you think it has to do with my slideshow? I am almost sure that I already had imported the slideshow into DVDSP when it was still showing 2gb which would mean the problem would probably lie with the menu I had selected.
Do you think I should run the slideshow through Compressor then reimport into DVDSP?
    thanks!

  • How can I format my movies that I make to a lower gigabyte so it can fit onto my DVD?

    Help please

    Hi
iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.

  • Completed 3 hr iMove project, BUT iDVD sees it as being 4 hours

I just completed my iMovie project, and am now ready to use iDVD, however, 2 issues....
1 - I've noticed that while editing iMovie, at the end of my actual movie stuff, which is 2:50:45:09 long, there's additional "dead space" that goes out to 4:00:12:19......how do I get rid of this "dead space"?
2 - this "dead space" is recognized on iDVD as actual footage, so if I can take care of problem #1, then #2 will go away
and I actually have a 3rd ?, since my movie is 2 hours and 50 minutes long, it will not fit onto one DVD, and I'm on a MacBook, not a MacBook Pro, so I don't have a DL DVD RW......so I obviously need to greak this Movie onto 2 different DVD's:
how do I break my iMovie project into 2 shorter projects to put on 2 seperate DVD's, or how do I take the 1 iMovie project and split it onto 2 different DVD's?
thx for any help in advance

excessive +trial'n error+ editing in iM could create 'stray clips', just a single frame of video, 'somewhere' at the very end of the timeline.. set the zoom-slider to max and scroll at the very end.. you should be able to 'select' that almost-non-existing clip and delete it ...
that sets your project length to correct time..
2:50 is too much for iDVD, which benchmark is 120min...( real life: ~110)
follow Dan's exellent advice about splitting epic movies into two:
    http://danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/usage/5003.shtml
just to say that: double-layer sound nice in ads, but many DVDstandalones don't accept DL-r-media.. plus: 2.5h for a 'homebrewn' movie? .. my audience usually falls asleep after 20min ..

  • Is it possible to unburn imovie projects?

    Hi
In order to save hd space, i have always burned my imovies onto dvds using idvd and then deleted the imovie projects. I now have a new large hd and would like to recover the original imovie projects from the burned dvds is it possible?

I'm not sure whether that can be done. However, you might find some helpful into in Bengt Warleby's post in the following thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1813590&tstart=0
If I understood Bengt's post correctly, he was talking about reverse engineering a DVD, using Roxio Toast to convert back to a DV stream, and thence back into iMovie. That sounds like what you want to do.
Hopefully Bengt will see your post and weigh in here.

  • Is there a way to have iDVD have accommodate more than one iMovie project on one DVD?

Looking for a way to have more than one iMovie Project burned to one DVD through iDVD.  Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

    Hi
YES - But do not use "Share to iDVD" in any version of iMovie as this will degrade the final result - BUT
Share to Media Browser - and as Large (Not HD or other resolutions as this too degrades the final DVD)
Now when Your movies are Shared. Close iMovie
Open iDVD and import movies from Media button/Movies (down to the right)
And You can add up to 99 movies - or 60/120 minutes (reg encoding quality chosen)
Time is = Movie duration + MENU DURATION (can take 15 minutes or more if elaborated)
(I keep it as simple possibly)
    Yours Bengt W

  • Imovie project folder will not open in toast titanium

    Hi,
Just purchased a Lacie external dvd burner. I am trying to add my imovie project to my 1st dvd burn. When I try and open the imovie project folder none of my projects are highlighted and I can't pick them. Any suggestions?

What do I have to do now?
Find out what the "unsupported" format is and convert it to one that is supported if you can. (I.e., open the file in QT Player if it will open and check the "Format:" information line in the "Inspector" window to see what audio and video compression formats are contained in the file. If the file will not open in the QT Player, then check the Finder "Get Info" window to see what it says about the file contents.

  • 3 hours of footage onto 1 DVD?

    Hi everyone,
We have a big project coming up: 3 hours (not including the menu.) How can we compress this using compressor so it all fits onto 1 DVD, either single or dual layer?
I've read in other posts that if you use AC3 audio instead of AIFF, that will help save room... but really i'd like to know more about the setting to use in Compressor/DVDSP in order to pull this off.
    Thanks in advance

    Do the math.
Double that maximum bit rate for twice the size of DVD5.
    It will look better.
But you also might consider editing some of the footage.

  • Putting 2 vob files onto 1 DVD -Please help

I borrowed a handicam that burns to mini DVD, as mine broke. Usually I import files as DV on the mac from my camera and cut them together there.
With this camera, I have two halves of a recital that I want to put onto 1 DVD. I saved the DOB files from each mini disc ont my Mac and I figured I would just put them both into iDVD or edit with iMovie and burn onto 1 DVD, but I cannot import or use DOB files with them. I also have Final Cut Express, but again - no DOB files. iMovie won't take them.
I tried converting the files with VLC or MPEG Stream on a PC but the audio and video don't sync.
All I want to do is put both VOB files on a DVD that will play in a DVD player.
Please help me! I am extremely frustrated and under a deadline...

Make your sequences, export out as DV AVI files, bring them into Encore and author as usual.

  • IMovie won't share/export my project as it says 'not enough disk space' - how on earth do I get this movie onto a DVD?

I really hope someone can help me please?
I have a 16GB iPad and have created a really nice wedding DVD for my sister.  It consists of about 20 mins worth of video clips and 25 mins of images set to music with movement between slides etc.  I have cleared absolutely everything off that's possible from my memory and I can't seem to get the iMovie project off my iPad!  My storage says that 8.7GB is taken up by iMovie and I've deleted all photos from my camera roll as iMovie can run the project without them, it doesn't cope without the video clips though (tried that!)
I hve now tried exporting to iTunes and it says I don't have enough disk space - I don't understand how it can't just lift the project off my iPad without having to consume yet more storage?  I have also tried exporting to camera roll trying 1080pHD - too big.  It started on the 710pHD and got all the way through exporting (around 30 mins) and then at the end told me I didn't have enough disk space.  Funnily enough, iMovie was only taking up around 6GB of space prior to this, so it's storing this failed attempt to export some how but I can't see how I can get rid of that.
I am heartbroken that I've spent three months doing this and now can't transport it from my iPad by seeminly any means possible.  I don't want to just give up.  I've seen other threads that say 'go to my computer and look in the DCIM folder and it's there... but it's not.  All the video clips are there but not the actual project.
Any help anyone can give would be so much appreciated.  Is there a way I can do this without essentially having to give up on apple products and buy some video editing software for my PC. Which isn't a MAC by the way.  As you can tell, I was hoping to screen this movie on Christmas day for the family :-(

Are any of your apps video players? Some app store apps contain a file you can't see which saves logs of everything you do. Say if you have had an iPhone for 4 months and watched 50 videos with a video player these 50 videos may have been copied to the log file inside the application and may be what is using up all your disk space. Delete all video player applications from your iPhone.
If that doesn't solve the problem copy the photos to your computer and restore your iPhone with iTunes back to factory settings and when you have restored DO NOT "restore from back up" because that might restore whatever is causing the problem instead DO "set up as new iPhone". Once you've set up your iPhone sync apps, books music, photos...etc back to the device.

  • How do I move a music file in iTunes on my PC onto my iPad to add to an iMovie project?

How do I move a music file in iTunes on my PC onto my iPad to add to an iMovie project?

    CBellC-
I do not have iMovie, so I can't try this!
Run iTunes with your iPad connected to the computer, either by the USB cable or by WiFi.  Select the iPad under DEVICES in iTunes.  Click on Apps at the top of the window and scroll down to File Sharing.  If iMovie appears there, select it.  The Documents window to the right is where you transfer files to (Add) and from (Save To) the iPad.

  • Why is it when I add photos from iPhoto onto an iMovie project, it is not displayed when I play the movie from beginning to end, although I can see it in the (edit) format?

    Hi everyone,
I'm just wondering why is it that when I place an image from iPhoto to an iMovie project, it is not displayed when I play it from beginning to end in fullscreen playback mode? However, when I exit it on the timeline, it is shown. All I did as drag it from the iPhoto column and place on at the beginning. I would really appreciate someones help because I really need to be able to place images onto my projects. Thanks!
