Got A MacBook Pro - What Do I Need To Know?

Well I've finally become a part of what I've seen referred to as "The Mac Family" and I couldn't be more pleased. I got a 15" MacBook Pro for Christmas and I'm still begining to explore what I can do with it.
Of course I've done the iTunes thing and have done some minimal exploring with Safari. It came with OSX Tiger on the MBP but also came with two discs so that I could update to Leopard at some point down the road. Being a recent Windows convert I want to get myself familiar with Tiger before I put in the Leopard disc and upgrade.
That said what sort of advice do you long-time Mac Users have for a long-time Windows, recent Mac Convert? What sort of things do I need(should) to keep an eye out for so that I don't "Trip Over" myself? What are some apps (3rd party or otherwise) should I look into? If it helps at all I'm currently going to school so what sort of programs should I look into? I'm used to using Microsoft Office for things like typing up term papers etc. What's the Mac equivalent? How is it?
Anything else is much appreciated.

Welcome to "The Mac Family". I am sure you are discovering why Mac users are so passionate about their machines. I understand what it's like to switch from PC to Mac. I finally got a MBP in August to replace my ancient 4y.o. PC (although I had purchased used two Macs, now 6 and 19 y.o.). You will become a fanatic shortly. Thursday, nearly five months after getting my new Mac, I was overwhelmed (ie. became instantly happy, heartbeat rose, very happy) to walk into my Physics 2 Lab and see about 15-20 newer white iMacs spread throughout a rather small room. The Mac spirit will get to you very, very shortly.
The first word of advise I can give you is that: "It's a Mac...if you find something hard to do, you're not doing it right!!" Also, you may find some things a little awkward or hard to find, but you will quickly figure out. My first encounter with this came when I clicked the x-bubble in the corner of iTunes (which closes a program in Windows) and music still played...man was I confused, especially when I learned that you had to "quit" applications rather than click that bubble. Another thing is that in Safari, putting your favorites along the menu bar is very ingenious! The MacBook Pro gets warm...at times VERY warm! Learn keyboard shortcuts: Command-q quits applications; Command-h hides open applications; F12 brings up Dashboard; F11 shows the desktop; Fn-F9 displays exposé (shows all open windows); Command-t opens new tabs in Safari; and pressing the power button and then enter (because "shut down" is automatically highlighted) takes less than a second. I'd say I learn a new shortcut about every 1-2 weeks (since I've now had my baby now for 5mo.). NEVER, NEVER, NEVER insert any small disc (like a MiniDVD, etc.) into the optical drive. I haven't had an experience with that and judging from some of these threads, I don't want to. You may not like the Dock, so try positioning it on the sides (the ugly glossy dock becomes a clean-looking black dock when on the sides, oh how I wish I could have this look when it's on the bottom!). Also, I found it helpful to place the applications folder into the Dock besides the default downloads, documents, & folders.
I would DEFINITELY recommend Microsoft Office if you have or anticipate having to share such files with PCs. iWork can export files that can be opened in MS Office, but often there are certain parts of documents that don't easily translate into Office. The biggest problem I had was using Keynote. I had to give a presentation at the end of last semester. I had exported the file as a PowerPoint file, but nevertheless it would not open in Office 07. So I spent 15 or so in front of a class of 50 trying to get my presentation to open. I was able to open it later that day on my roommate's laptop with Office 03 and saved it from that onto my flash drive. In addition to the inability to open, you loose practically all transitions in a presentation going from Keynote to PowerPoint. This problem, however, is because Keynote transitions are much better than PowerPoint's crappy transitions. My final problem was that I have never used Excel before. I bought my MBP one week before starting college, and one of my classes was Computer Applications which focused on Excel and AutoCAD. Needless to say, I was horribly confused when learning how to use Excel commands in class and then trying to do the same things in Numbers with different commands. Anyways, I'm just trying to give you good reasons to get Office instead of iWork. I only have iWork (don't have money now for Office), which I find to be wonderful and visually pleasing but a pain in the rear when sending files to PCs/PC-users.
On to accessories: I would recommend getting a mouse. It's not because the trackpad on the MBP is bad, it's the best on any laptop on the market today, but using the mouse as opposed to the trackpad for long periods of time feels much better. I have a wireless Mighty Mouse. It was a quick decision, and I wanted to hit my self for being so stupid as to buy a $70 mouse the entire hour drive home from the Apple Store. Even after a full week of using it, I was not impressed by it and regretted spending soooo much on it. Yesterday I replaced the battery for the first time...the included batteries had lasted four months! I love it and can't imagine life with a corded Mighty Mouse or a wireless mouse which has a receiving thing to plug into a USB port. Anyways, I definitely recommend buying a mouse. The wireless Mighty Mouse is costly, but I absolutely love it . Another accessory would be the incase neoprene sleeve for $35 at the Apple store. I like it because it fits snug (but not too snug) around my MBP and provides extra protection because I do not have "laptop-backpack". Finally, you've probably discovered that the speakers are not very good. I have a pair of $15 speakers that sound MUCH better!
Hope I could help!!!

If you purchased a computer from another person, you need to wipe it clean.  To do this, click on the link - Erasing disks securely
Depending on your model Macbook Pro...
Start up from your install disc, go to Disk Utility and select the disk and click erase - to securely erase data click Security Options and Erase Free Space which will entirely wipe your disk, overwriting it with zeros so that no data is recoverable.

Your problem will be that AppleTV only has HDMI and optical output - no analogue out so unless say you had a B&W Zeppelin or similar that has optical in you'd need something esle to decode the audio to ananlogue.
Some have also reported AppleTV not working for audio when TV is off or in standby.
You may be better off having both!

  • Hello MacBook Pro Musicians- I cannot read sheet music from the ipad. It is too small. I want to connect a large monitor, hopefully wirelessly to my 13 inch macbook pro. what would I need to connect ? Any suggestions on how to keep monitor from falling?

Hello Macbook Pro Musicians--I cannot read sheet music from my 13" macbook or from an IPad. The print is too small for these aging eyes! So I need to get a large monitor to attach to the Macbook.  I want the monitor to be connected wirelessly or using a blue tooth.  This will eliminate alot of potential mishaps
when playing out.  Also I am having a time figuring out how I am going to safely keep the monitor on somekind of music stand without falling!!!  Can anyone help me with this?

    Hi Julius,
As you can see in my profile section, my MBP is older by 5 years, 2GB RAM and with regards to question 1 (Q1), has no problems with having all those programs open at the same time with the possible exception of Photoshop since I use Gimp instead. With twice the RAM and much overall much better specs, Photoshop shouldn't be an issue. But you listed some other activities that might need that additional RAM. But the advise most give is to not get it from Apple but from a third party.
Q5 - I always get Apple Care. Only had to use it once but it paid for itself that one time.
Sorry, can't help you much with the questions you really want answered since I won't have a new MBP until (hopefully) next week but for Q4, I believe it depends on the peripheral. My current monitors are too old to allow them to be hooked up in a chain. Supposedly, if the monitors do have the ports, you could via the MBP Thunderbolt port. The speeds are also dependent upon the peripheral. If the external hard drive is using a USB 2 port, you are limited by that speed (480 Mb/s). If it has a Thunderbolt port, then from what I understand, we, my friend, are in for some great times because I believe your RAM will have the ability to access data as fast as it can take it at 10Gb/s (and if will need those kinds of speeds, the 8GB of RAM may be the way to go). The Thunderbolt demos on YouTube where they are accessing four video files from a Raid drive, then sending them back out via Final Cut Pro to a monitor are amazing. I'll probably never push this machine to anywhere near it's limits but I can't wait to see what others do.
    Peace,
    Jeremiah

  • I recently got a MacBook Pro and want to burn my videos taken with my iPhone to DVD. What is the easiest program for me to accomplish this? Help!

I recently got a MacBook Pro and want to burn my videos, taken with my iPhone, to DVD. What is the easiest way for me to accomplish this? I've been told I need to download a DVD creator/burner. I've downloaded 3 different free versions, but none of them seem to recognize the video files from my iPhone. I don't need anything fancy or complicated. I just want a way to store these vidoes and be able to play them on our DVD player. Help!

Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder on your PC to /Music/ on your Mac.
Then delete what you don't want.
You will need to authorize yrou computer for the iTunes account yoru mother has.
You should create & use your own iTunes account for any more purchases.
You don't need to export anything and definitely don't need to (and shouldn't) convert anything.

When it gets bad enough, you will need to replace the screen.
Your warranty covers defects in material and workmanship.
That sounds like accidental damage -- glass does not tend to crack spontaneously.
Check your homeowners insurance to see if there might be coverage.

I got my Macbook Pro from another user (different apple id) and now i'm not able to update iPhoto and iMovie. What can i do?

You need to contact Apple and transfer that computer, the serial number, into your name and your Apple ID. Then you should be able to update the included Apple Apps from the App store. No need to Re-buy them again.
    Caveat to the above.
If your Mac did not originally come with Lion Preinstalled, early releases of early 2011 models and older, and originally had Snow Leopard installed the original owner should of supplied the Mac OS X System Discs with the system. If that person didn't you should order them from Apple at a small fee, and don't lose them.

  • My MacBook Pro stated that it needed to be updated. I clicked yes to restart the computer and update but when it restarted it stays on the gray screen with the apple logo and then pops up, stating "unable to find driver for this platform." What do I do?

Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with networks that require any kind of authentication other than a WPA or WPA2 Personal password.
When the Mac OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the Mac OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac didn’t ship with Lion, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
Don't install the Thunderbolt update -- it's defective.

If you subscribed to iTunes match the songs are kept in icloud. If you didn't but you did save the actual iTunes library folder which should include the music, video, etc.  you should be able to just drag this file back to your machine in the same place and when you open iTunes it will give you a chance to identify the iTunes library folder.
You can test this to find out if you saved the media files or not and don't need to attach your nano to do it.
You are correct that once you connect the nano it will clear the existing files from it and sync it with the new iTunes library.
If you don't have the media files i'm not sure if/how to get them back on a windows ipod.  I have everything backed up regularly because of the horror stories I have seen & heard.

That would depend on whether your model actually has a hard drive. If you have the new 2013 Retina model, then you have a fixed storage device built-in that cannot be modified after purchase.

  • I have a macbook pro. what equipment do i need to watch my computer on my flat screen tv?

i have a macbook pro. what equipment do i need to watch my computer on my flat screen tv? thank you.

Step 1. Peek in the back of the TV and identify what kind of inputs it has. Ideally, you'd want an HDMI socket, followed by a DVI or in worst case, analog VGA. Try to determine what's the "native resolution" of the panel.
Step 2. Based on what you find, peruse in the Apple Store (Mac Accessories /  Cables section, if online) for the appropriate dongle/converter. One end goes to the Thunderbolt/MiniDisplay Port on the Mac, other end depending on the output to feed to the TV. Also buy the corresponding cable of the desired length.
Step 3. Plug everything together. You have to decide whether to use display mirroring (Mac & TV show the same thing) or separate displays (each shows different stuff).
Step 4. Based on 1 and 3, open System Preferences / Displays and adjust screen resolution(s) for optimum viewing pleasure. The Mac's display usually far exceeds the external display's max resolution capabilities, so you have to downsize as needed, if in mirroring mode.
    Step 5. Enjoy the results.
Edit: If your TV  has HDMI input AND your MacBook Pro is a Retina, you can skip the first half of step 2. The Mac already has HDMI output port, so you just need the cable.

using bootcamp is overkill and overcomplex
use a free virtual machine such as virtualbox https://www.virtualbox.org/
