Got Mac OS X 10.0, what should i do?

Good Morning everybody,
from my Grandfather i´ve got an old iMac (running 9.x) and a CD with Mac OS X 10.0. He never installed it, since he had bought it in 2001.
Nowadays i think it wouldn`t make any sense to install this version of X, ´cause is much too old? I was searching for some updates, but i can´t update to a really newer version (except 10.0.15 .
-Is there a chance to migrate this oldish CD to new fortunes???
thx

all   Mac OS X (10.0.x)

Hi xcvbm! And Welcome To Discussions!
A recap, and some additional info.
Mac OS X Versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, are complete system upgrades that must be purchased.
The point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.6 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Jaguar and Panther, are no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
Jaguar Full Retail Version CDs, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Jaguar and Panther are only on CDs, not DVDs.
More info here Tip: Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs
Once Jaguar 10.2.x is installed, you can use the 10.2.8 combo update,
or if Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final edition of either OS.
If your Mac meets the System Requirements for Tiger, you could also consider installing that.
And then use the 10.4.6 Combo Update.
You'll find System Requirements in these links:
Panther
Tiger
Additionally,
"Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."

If you use Windows program to partition the Hard Drive, the Apple partition gets destroyed.
Windows does not understand it is a guest on your Mac, and throws garabge wherever it pleases.

I have the original iPhone and I can't sync the address book from my Mac to the iPhone. What should be the problem and can I sync?

Thanks a lot for the answer. I'm so upset, have no even one contact on my phone. I has to do with the moving to iCloud from MobileMe.

    Thank you so much.
I still dont get why the sync with my computer address book is not working.
And why when I moved to icloud all the photos I had next to the contacts are disappered.
I had my iPad, which it still, I did not move from MobileMe to iCloud and all the photos are there!
Anything I can do to use the iCloud on the iPad as well and update the iCloud with the photos?

    Hey adinat,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities! I would go through the steps in the iPhone troubleshooting assistant and see if that resolves the issue you're experiencing on your iPhone 5:

There's no need to go to the store if you don't want to. You can purchase and download the new version from the Parallels web site. In fact if you want to try it out, I believe you can do the download and get a two week trial version. Later you can purchase the serial number to make it official.
I cannot be certain about your data, but I did not lose anything when I updated to Lion and faced a similar situation.
    Best of luck.

My Mac will not download Lion, What should I do.

What's installed on your computer? If you don't have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later then you cannot get Lion. If you already have Lion installed then you cannot re-download from the App Store until you have reinstalled Snow Leopard.

  • I have an IBook dual USB Mac OS x laptop. What should I do with it?

I got this laptop from my aunt. It's an old IBook G3 Dual USB laptop with Mac OS x. It was very lightly used. I bought an airport card for it and downloaded a browser for it called Classila. Now I'm wondering: What should I do with it? Are there any games I can buy for it? I can't play any modern games like Minecraft or any others I've tried. I have an Xbox 360 so I dont rely on this iBook for gaming. Any tips? 5 point to best answer. Thanks

I would suggest maximizing the RAM with a 512 MB module.

We need to know how much space is on the hard drive. See if Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility gives you the information on the hard drive (its capacity and available space).
Mac OS X 10.1 is available from Amazon.
    http://www.amazon.com/Mac-OS-10-1-OLD-VERSION/dp/B00005QVGV
Once you have installed Mac OS X 10.1, you can then download the update here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1226
    Note this:
If updating from Mac OS X 10.1, you must install Security Update 7-18-02 for v10.1 prior to installing this update.
However, this is still a 10-year-old version of the OS and is not very good, so be forewarned.
If the iBook has a drive which is capable of reading DVDs and has enough available space on it, then it would probably run best with Mac OS X 10.4.11 (once you have maximized the RAM with the 512 MB module).

My mac mini is running slow. What should I do?

    Hello Kate,
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Mac 10.5.8 update what should i do?

so i had previously tried to update my mac in the summer/fall of last yr i had a bunch of things i had to install. so i got sick of installing everything. so i turned the computer off. i turned it back on the next day and it had this blue screen. with white words on it. my ex bf told me how to fix it. so that problem was resolved. i had to do like a recovery and bring it back to the way it was before so i had to reinstall my leopard. i performed all the updates again without shutting it down. now everytime i try to install the 10.5.8 update it wont go through all the way. ive done it twice already, ive let it sit overnight. he told me i have to manually install it. i want it to b updated because i am considering an ipad. so i don't know should i try installing it again, should i manually install it from this website, should i just go out and buy snow leopard? i don't have a backup computer right now so if this one gets messed up its not going to be good lol. i have a macbook pro from a few years ago. i do want to get an imac but i am waiting to see what they come out with if nething. thank you for any help.

    Some general advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 4.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

  • Firefox won't open... at all. On a Mac running the beta. What should I do?

Not sure what happened, but I can't open Firefox anymore. I'm on a Mac and pretty sure I've been using the beta release. I remember it updating a few days ago, but anyway... it won't open. I've tried rebooting... nothing. It doesn't load. It just... sits there with the light on under it in the dock, but if I do a Force Quit.... it shows as not responding. How can I uninstall/reinstall ... without losing my bookmarks? It's been doing this for the past two days. Thanks. No offense to other browsers, but I hate everything except for Firefox.

What happens??? What are your system specs??

  • Hello Mac! Goodbye Pc! What should I expect?

    Hello!!
I'm buying a Mac soon and I would like to know what to expect.
I have not found anything that tells me what to expect.
I play WoW. Do I need to buy new WoW software to install on my Mac.
I know that I won't need a firewall or virus protection but are ya'll sure?
Is it possible to have a home network with my new Mac and my PC? I am throwing caution to the wind sorta but old habits die hard.
I do not want to run any Pc programs on my new Mac, either. See ya Windows, I gotta new attitude! Thanks for the help, I can't wait to read your responses.

No, you don.t need anything new to play WoW - Dunsdraep (Priest), Darkmoon Faire European Realm. See TBOE.EpicMount.Com for more details Just reinstall from your original disks - I think Blizzard only issue dual Mac & PC disks now.
You might want to have a look at the Switcher page for more Windows to Mac general info:

and for general Mac info there is:

You'll need to find you way around these Forums to get the best out of them - this one is for Feedback about the actual Discussions Forums as a whole - read the big red notice at the top please. When you get back to the top level you'll find many categories and you need to drill down into an actual Forum before you can post a question - that gets many people confused!
When you get your Mac just take things slowly, enjoy even unpacking it, and then fill in your Public Profile details with your new acquisition so that we can see what you have, and also offer relevant advice.

ps No anti-virus software here but ClamXav is the one usually recommended. If you're going for MobileMe there is software called Backup (for the obvious). And another piece of software I use can be found at http://www.wowmatrix.com/
