Hi,
Quit Safari.
Open a Finder window select your *Home* folder in the Sidebar on the left. Then open the *Library* folder, then the *Caches* folder, then the *com.apple.Safari folder*.
Move the cache.db file from the *com.apple.Safari* folder to the Trash.
Relaunch Safari.
And... help at this link for when you see the flashing question mark when you boot your Mac.

I got a flashing folder with a question mark. I got a new hard drive and upgraded to 4 gigs and can't open anything or reload the operating system? Help? FYI: I have been using boot camp with windows 7 and started getting a kernal_data_Page_error and it would reboot windows, i was trying to do a chkdsk on the next reboot, but thats when i started getting this issue. I have put in a new hard drive and went from 2 gigs to 4. I can not get the computer to do anything, even the monitor does not show anything now????
Prep your new drive:
Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs,) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install OS X. -
Hey,
my MacBook pro recently froze on the spinning wheel while I was using the Internet, I had to hold down the power button to shut down
Once I restarted the machine I was left on a grey screen with a flashing folder sign..I read all the articles on this that I could find online and followed the procedures until the only option left was to use disk utility from the install dvd and try to diagnose and repair the problem.
I used disk utility and found it could not repar the disk named. Disk0s2 ..which I have also read is a bad sign to start with...the log said this..
Verify and repair volume disk0s2
Checking journaled HFS plus volume
Invalid b-tree node size
The volume. Could not be verified completely
Disk utility could not repair this disk..backup files, reformat disk and restore backed up files
I need some advice as to that's what I should do and if there's a way for me to save my files on the mac....and more importantly how to reformat the disk properly..I've tried the YouTube tutorials and couldn't get what I was after.
Thanks to anyone who can help me with this
Thank you again for reading this
DanYour going to need to read the Data Recovery tip I created here
Your going to need to buy DataRescue $99 or similar to read the 1's and 0's of your files and restore them to another drive while booted from another Mac or a drive with OS X on it.
Have fun.

OK I got my Diamond. Now what? HeHeHe
I grabbed up a Diamond SLi MB and a MSI 7800GT. I installed my 3700+ and my Kingmax RAM. It runs OK. I am ordering a Opty 175 and some Muskin EP RAM in a few weeks.
OK so I got Drivers installed and updated and then flashed to Bios 1.8. I noticed the I no longer have 183 RAM speed in the Bios but I did gain 1T command rate so some good came with the Bios Update. I would like to have both though. Anyone know which Bios's have both 183 and 1T and work OK with a San Diego?
I also setup the SilRaid. Nice and quick.
I can post at 236HTT easy enough with the 1.0 Bioos but I would like to do that with a later Bios. For now I just use A64 Tweaker and Clockgen to overclock which is fine for the short haul. I haven't paid much attention top Bios versions of late though so help me out if you can.
Thanks.
Oh ya I guess thgs makes me a part of the gang in here huh??? LOLQuote from: Tiresmoke on 15-January-06, 14:46:14
Hey I can give it a try. Typically I stay with MSI bios's for obvious reasons...
I usually try to stick with them too... but I'm not above using a modded BIOS. The knowledgable enthusiast "modder" will usually go the extra mile to try to fix some sort of irritating problem that a manufacturer won't bother dealing with.
After all, OC'ing isn't an "officially" sanctioned activity, right? And who says that you have to say what you're using...
A modded BIOS was the only way I could get my old ABIT NF7-s board to achieve it's potential. If you skulk around some other forums (heaven forbid) you can quickly find out which modder's are "players". -
Got the MBPretina. Now, what High-end Monitor ?
After lots of waiting, weighing pros and cons and whether I should go iMac, Mac Mini or MacBook Pro High rez anti-glare, helped in that pilgrim quest by some encouraging users reviews and eventually compelled by a dealer's special, I fell for a 2013 MacBook Pro Retina 15". First impressions are great. So far, after installing most of my compatible programs, there has not been a hiccup. Leaping from an early iMac Core2 duo, Lightroom seems to fly !
It is still in the installation phase and I wonder if it will provide for all the connections I need. I'm not a fan of prolonged exposure to WIFI, so I plugged it to the network with the Apple USB to Ethernet adapter, which works great also for retrieving stuff from my iMac with a normal patch cable (thanking again for the informative post on auto-sensing ports provided here). Of course, WIFI does also work for those tasks. I got the USB to Ethernet adapter instead of the faster TB to Ethernet, because I will need the two Thunderbolt ports, one for an external display and the other for my older FW800 drives (I went USB3 subsequently). This will leave one USB3 port available for another drive. Things might get a bit awkward for downloading CF cards, but then I can simply unplug the network for a while. Still, there is a USB printer sitting there, a USB microphone, and I might find the need for an external scratch at some point as the internal SSD fills up. I reckon that an USB3 hub will soon prove necessary.
Monitor. Since Apple hasn't yet announced a designer grade Apple Display, I'll be looking at third parties. I do skip the top notch ones for some obvious reason. After extensive research, I am left with those contenders : The proven CCFL NEC PA27W, or the Eizo SX2762W. But for a similar price, I'm actually seriously leaning towards the new DELL U3014.
What draws me to the Dell is the ratio first. Many of my images are framed vertically, and I also work with InDesign. Brightness on that LED panel can be set to a minimum of 50 cd/m2, with non flickering GB LED back-lighting technology. Price is a lot less than the NEC counterpart. Last but not least, it has a USB3 hub. The earlier released U2713H is well reviewed, except for uniformity.
Now the drawback: Monitors this size must be plugged in with the dual cable adapter, which takes one TB and one USB I think. But this would be the case with the other two also.
The DELL has a USB3 hub, which would greatly help, but the MacbookPro Retina seems fussy with external USB3 hubs have I read, at least earlier versions of the MBPr.
There have also been some sleep issues with some types of monitors. But I suppose that using the latest, I should not see that.
What did I forget ? I would gladly take any word of encouragement and /or of warning before the final purchase !
Thanks!
PaulFirst, I love Eizo monitors. Second, I couldn't afford one so I bought the Apple Thunderbolt Display. With a colorimeter, it produces 'good enough' color.
I would suggest that you ask the color pros on the Adobe Color Management Forum - http://forums.adobe.com/community/design_development/color_management?view=discu ssions. You'll get plenty of opinions there.
Good luck,

When I open my hotmail or a website with FF and try to copy and paste to a MS Works document it tells me that MSWorks has stopped working and the availabe options only shut off MS Works. When I do the same thing with IE9 it copies and pastes just fine. Indications seem to me to be a problem with FF. I don't remember this being a problem a short time ago but it is NOW. Any fixes?
Ask Microsoft support forum, no? It sounds like an issue with MS Works that fails to accept pasting from FF.

So I've got Shake 4.1, now what?
Firstly, with the new price for Shake 4.1, and likely many more users coming on board with that product (even though development has stopped for it), a NEW discussion forum for Shake would probably be in order at this time. I've noticed a distinct absence of a forum for Shake, with Apple suggesting outside forums instead. Maybe they could support the product (and promote it) by putting up a forum here.
I've been using Lightwave 8.5 and tinkering with the Mult-pass render outputs via LW Buffer Export. I seem to be able to output Raw RGB, diffuse shading, speclar shading passes OK with their alpha channels intact. I saved them out as TIFF 32's and used Quicktime on a Mac to assemble them into a *.mov file, which I realize Combustion and Shake don't require since they take care of assembling image sequences.
My question is: are there any Shake users out there using LW? If so, how do I assemble a script/node sequence to get me compositing my output? How do I combine these various passes (overlay, screen, multiply, ???). Anyone have a script they want to share as an illustration of what works for you?
I have seen a reference on the web about how Lightwave and Maya can use the various passes and overlay modes, but it is Greek to me since I don't have enough background knowledge to connect the dots.
Thanks for any help.Hey Conrad,
If you head over to the Shake section of fxShare (formerly HighEnd2D), you will find the Shake listserv which is popular with many seasoned users. There is also a discussion board on that same site. I would also recommend the Creative Cow Shake forum for beginner questions.
As for comping your multi-pass renders, there's no real trick to it: Just add a FileIn for each of your passes and plug them into a MultiLayer node and pick the appropriate blend modes (Screen, Add, etc), much as you would do in AE or Motion. You can perform operations on each pass by inserting nodes between the FileIns and the MultiLayer. For example, you might want to blur an ambient occlusion pass by inserting a Gaussian Blur node, or do an erode on a specular pass to shrink down your highlights.
Good luck with your projects! -
Bootcamp partitioning got stuck... now what?
I wanted to create a split partition with bootcamp. I'm using snow leopard on MBPro.
I used bootcamp assistant, chose a split partition and selected next. The progress bar moved for about 15 minutes before it froze. it froze for several hours and refused to move. The whole computer locked up. I did a hard shutdown and rebooted it. Now when I go to bootcamp assistant, it won't let me do a split partition because mac is "using" about 3/4 of my HDD. (appears to be used data amount + attempted partition size). I don't know how to undo a partition attempt. I can't tell if there's another partition on my HDD. Also, I tried doing a recovery with my snow leopard CD, but all I get is a grey apple and NO activity. I can see no way to break down the "used" partition.
My mac is messed up. I cannot do a recovery on it.It is the type of thing that anyone would say have backup, will happen.
And to shrink the partition ahead of time to the desired amount to see if you do have abiltiy and enough free ungramentd (consolidated) free space.
Booting from another volume to repair the drive FIRST ahead of time doesn't hurt.
Normally takes less than 5 minutes more like 2-3 minutes to create a partition.
Clean install and restore from TimeMachine is one way. Installs and updates tend to fragment free space all over the drive. Cloning and an erase and restore considates free space so it will work.
You would be lucky to have a bootable system, and to repair and do Safe Boot and try to get a clone or DU Restore Image made. -
Startup stuck on a Flashing Folder/Question Mark
Aloha,
I have been looking for a solution to my problem for several months now and have never found a solution.
One day my computer froze so I forced a shut down by holding the on/off button.
When I turned on the machine again the folder/question mark appeared.
I have tried all the hot keys.
Option-only shows the refresh and forward buttons but no options.
I thought my hard drive failed, so I bought a new one and installed it.
When I placed the OS DVD in to install a fresh copy I still got the flashing folder/question mark.
I don't know what to do, any suggestions?sione wrote:
I don't know how to get to the system preferences if i can't get past the flashing folder/question mark.
Correct you'll not be able to...
The question mark appears when the boot loader cannot find a valid OS system/partition.
Here is what I would try:
1. Boot from the OSX installer by inserting the disk into the Mac then power-off. Power-on the Mac and immediately press and hold the "C-key" until you get the installer Language screen. Select your language and continue. The next screen should be the Welcome screen, go to the top and select Utilities/Disk Utilities from the tool bar. Once Disk Utilities is open select your internal (if it appears) then select the first aid tab. In the first aid pane select to run "Repair disk". If "Repair Disk" results in errors then run it again until it reports no errors found. Once "Repair Disk" is complete with no errors then press and run "Repair Permissions". Once complete reboot to test the Mac.
2. If the above does not work then try booting with the Startup Manager, by pressing and holding the "option-key" during boot. The GUI Startup Manager will appear and you can select the drive you wish to boot from.
3. Alternately press the "X-key" during boot.
4. And lastly before we give you the bad news... make sure that the mouse or track-pad button is not being pressed or stuck during system boot.
If none of these works then you most likely have a bad drive. And you'll need to replace it. You do have a back up right?
Do you have another Mac, to use for troubleshooting? -
Grey Screen with Flashing Folder with Question Mark
Hi,
I need some help with an issue I'm having on my Mid-2012 Macbook Pro (13"; OSX 10.9.2; 8GB RAM). I've had issues with this Macbook for the past year. I've worked with Apple Support and had it into the Mac Store prior to the warranty expiring (Dec 2013). I have the exact same model with all of the same specs that my employer purchased at the same time for work as my work computer, and I haven't had any issues with that one.
Previously, the system would slow down excessively and eventually start hanging. Occasionally the screen would start flashing. Apple phone support had me wipe the hard drive and re-install the OS and all of my file, apps, and setting from my Time Machine backup. That worked for about four months, and then it started again. Since it was getting close to the warranty expiration, I took it to an Apple Store. They ran a bunch of diagnostics, said the hardware was all fine but the OS needed to be re-installed. They did that in early Dec, and everything was cool again until about three days ago. Three days ago, it started slowing down and freezing again (even when doing non-memory intensive tasks such as broswing the web with only a couple of tabs open and no other applications open). Last night, it froze hard and wouldn't shut down, so I had to cold boot it. When I tried to power it back on, it came to the grey screen with the flashing folder with the question mark (which I know means it can't find the boot sector). I waited until this morning, and it stil wouldn't boot. I then rebooted into Startup Manager, and the HDD was there. I selected the HDD, and it booted fine and ran fine for a couple of hours (I was able to do a Time Machine backup). Then it froze up solid again. I waited for an hour or so before cold booting (don't like doing that), and when I tried rebooting, I got the flashing folder with the question mark. I tried booting into the Startup Manager again, but this time, my HDD wasn't listed. I then booted into the OSX Recovery utility (CMD R on boot), went into the Disk Utility hoping to do a disk repair, but my HDD wasn't listed. I have an external SATA to USB adapter, so I pulled the HDD, hooked it to a USB port on my other (identical except it doesn't have problems) Macbook Pro. Once my other Macbook booted, the HDD from the bad Macbook Pro showed up fine. I ran a verify and repair disk on the HDD from the bad Macbook, and it didn't show any issues.
So I figured I'd be really brave. I took the HDD from the bad Macbook Pro and put it in my work (good) Macbook Pro (I took the HDD out of my working work Macbook Pro). It booted fine. I then did the verify and repair disk (again no errors) and verify and repair permissions (it found a few, but no more than it has in the past). I ran it that way for about an hour with no issues. That led me to believe that the HDD for my personal Macbook was fine, and it must be an issue with the SATA cable or the mainboard.
Here's where it gets odd. I put the HDD from my work Macbook Pro into the bad Macbook Pro thinking it wouldn't even recognize it. It did recognize it, and it booted fine. I ran it like that for about 30 minutes. It did have a couple of short freeze ups, but it didn't lock up solid. I didn't want to push my luck and possibly damage the HDD for my work Macbook, so I shut down the bad Macbook Pro ended the experiment at that point.
I put the original HDD back in the Macbooks where they originally came from. I then ran the Apple Hardware Test (press and hold D on startup) on the bad Macbook Pro; I did the extended testing option. It ran for about an hour, but it didn't find any issues with the bad Macbook Pro.
I put the HDD from the bad Macbook back in my working Macbook and wiped the disk and reinstalled OSX from a Time Machine Backup from last week (before the problems occured). Put it back in the bad Macbook and still no luck. Finally I tried resetting the PRAM because I saw that as one of the options on this discussion board.
I've searched and read everything I can find related to this, but I can't find anything that works, and I'm at my wits end. Can anyone point me in a direction of what might be wrong and what else to try?
Thanks!
MikeYou performed thorough and methodical troubleshooting, and this appears to be the most important result:
I put the HDD from my work Macbook Pro into the bad Macbook Pro thinking it wouldn't even recognize it. It did recognize it, and it booted fine. I ran it like that for about 30 minutes. It did have a couple of short freeze ups, but it didn't lock up solid.
Given compatible hardware, you ought to be able to swap hard disk drives in exactly that manner, so it shouldn't surprise you that it worked. However, installing the "known good" HDD in the problem machine should not have resulted in any freeze-ups at all.
You can conclude the hard disks (both of them) are serviceable and whatever fault exists probably lies elsewhere. Often the SATA cable is damaged or not seated properly, and is likely to fail more than anything on the logic board. Inspect the logic board's SATA connections and make sure there are no contaminants or damage. The two drives and two logic boards are going to have slightly different component tolerances, so perhaps the defective one is simply exceeding some limit.
Apple Hardware Test is very cursory and essentially tests for the presence of operable hardware. It is far from an exhaustive test, and only a report of a failure can be relied upon for accuracy. For a more thorough test you would need to have Apple evaluate it using the time-consuming Apple Service Diagnostics. Even then, they may come up without a clue, and eventually someone will suggest a logic board replacement which can be expensive.
It is an unusual problem, and I don't know how much time Apple would invest in diagnosing it before they conclude you really ought to buy a new Mac instead. They might surprise you though in that a "depot repair", if yours is eligible, is a very cost effective option so consider it.
Given your ability you might also consider purchasing a replacement logic board from PowerbookMedic, or even sending it to them for a flat rate repair. -
Booting from the disk...Flashing folder with a ? mark
I just used my Macbook Pro yesterday with no issues but today when I turned it on I got the Flashing folder with a question mark on it. I did search the forums and found out what it meant. I have tried a number of things to get my MBP to boot up and nothing is working so far. I was wondering if I should try to insert the disk that came with my laptop to see if that will work. I have an older MBP still running Leopard.
DVX100Shooter,
boot your MacBook Pro from its grey Mac OS X Install DVD by holding down the C key as it starts up. When the desktop appears, select Utilities from the menu bar, and from there run Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it let you get to your login screen now? -
So I came to this problem a while ago. M ycomputer basically froze so I was forced to shut down by holding the button down. When I started it up I got the flashing folder with a question mark. I started it up holding down the command and r keys which brought me to disk utility. Although my computer doesn't read that I have a hard drive to start it up. When I click on the disk utility app, I cannot verify or repair anything either. The buttons won't allow me to click on them. It also shows "Mac OSX Base System" which shows I have files and what not saved. I had been told that I need a new hard drive so I bought and manually installed a OWC SSD 240GB drive and when i booted the computer up it booted up yo the operating system fine with all my files and what not on there. After about twenty minutes, it froze again. I forced a shut down, restarted and the same thing happened. I am not able to choose my SSD to boot up, although thats probably because it doesn't have an operating system installed on it??
i have a Macbook Pro 13" 2011
any help would be great, I'm overall confused.ryansaint11,
this isn’t Apple support; this is a user-to-user forum. We’re just fellow users of Apple products here.
If you want to boot from your SSD, then you should put the SSD where your HDD currently is, and put the HDD into the optical bay. (That setup will also get you the best performance.) At the moment, you’re still booting from your HDD. Note that you will need to format your SSD in Disk Utility [with the “Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)” format] so that you can install OS X onto it.
Since you have an Early 2011 model, it might or might not have originally come with grey installation DVDs. You will be able to find out whether it did or not by trying to use OS X Internet Recovery to install OS X onto your SSD. If it does not work, or if the installed OS turns out to be Snow Leopard, then it will have originally come with the DVDs, and you should purchase a replacement pair of DVDs from Apple or iFixit; those discs will have your MacBook Pro’s Apple Hardware Test and its iLife apps. If the installed OS turns out to be Lion, then it will not originally have come with the grey installation DVDs, and your Apple Hardware Test will be installed along with Lion, and your iLife apps will be downloadable from the Mac App Store. -
Getting a flashing folder with a question mark when starting Imac.
I got this flashing folder with a question mark on it when starting my Imac this morning. Im running on Osx 10.6. I put it in target disc mode and connected it to my macbook pro. I opened the disc utility app on the macbook and found my imac. I "verified" it and found an error. When I clicked "repair" the disc utility app froze and crashed. When I opened it again my Imac didn't show up. I've restarted both computers several times with no luck. Whats my next step?
Hi.
Try restarting your iMac while holding down the option (alt) key until the spinng gear appears. You should momentarily be presented with a list of startup drives to select.
Choose Macintosh HD (your normal startup disk drive) and click the right-arrow.
When your iMac boots, go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and again select your normal startup disk. Then click Restart.
I hope this is helpful.
EDIT - disconnect the machines from each other first. -
Flashing folder with question mark at Startup
Here is what I know so far.
- The computer was powered off by pushing the power button without shutting down.
- The computer was then restarted and it was coming into the white screen with the Apple logo in the middle, but i noticed that it was skewed slightly (like someone took a 4:3 ratio screen and stretched it to a 16:9) and then it would show a circle slash icon and then the flashing folder with a question mark on it.
- It would not come up in single user mode (Command + S) and it said that there was an error loading kernel 'mach_kernel'
- It would not come up in safe mode (Shift)(The flashing folder came up again)
- I reset the PRAM (Command + Option + p + r) and it seemed to fix the problem with the stretched screen but did not help the boot situation (still got flashing folder)
- I did the start up where you can select the hard drive to boot with, it owed the HD and i selected it, but then i got the flashing folder with question mark.
- It would not come up in Verbose Mode (Command V) Error loading Kernel again.
- I bought a FireWire cable and hooked it to another MacBook Pro, and booted the faulty Mac into Target Disk Mode, the FireWire logo came up on the screen and bounced around like all forums said that it would, but the drive would not show up on my host. I checked the System Profiler on the host and it did acknowledge the Target Disk Mode was there, but the drive of the target would not show up on the host. I restarted the host, nothing. I checked all of the connections, nothing. I replugged all of the connections, nothing. I even reversed the FireWire cable, nothing.
- I have DiskWarrior 4 if i can get the drive to show up in TDM, but nothing so far.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for your help guys. I managed to get the computer started by holding down C at the Start Up with the Install Disc 1 in the computer. The disc was really kindof unnecessary, as the newest version of Mac OS X (10.4.10) became available via the hard drive.
I then found out that the battery was not installed, so I reset the management system by removing the A/C power, the battery and pushing the power button for 5 seconds, and then reconnecting everything. It did not help, the battery is bad i guess, so I am going to call AppleCare and get a new battery.
Thanks for your help. -
Flashing folder icon on startup. Please help
My laptop won't start properly anymore after i pressed the shut down button when my laptop was running slow. When I started it up I got a flashing folder icon with a question mark.
As of now I can only get into recovery mode by selecting the recover over the internet option.
Inside the recovery mode I ran disk utility and it could not repair the errors
I got errors such as invalid node and missing links
I cannot mount the drive at all
Is there a solution to this, maybe apart from disk warrior?
Many thanks,
David
P.s I have gone in to terminal to run fsck_hsf rf /dev/disk0s2, but that could not repair eitherIf you are backed up, then you can run Disk Warrior to see if you make it the internal drive readable.
If you aren't backed up, get Prosoft Data Rescue, an external hard drive big enough to handle both your internal drive, and your installed operating system from http://www.macsales.com/
Then boot off the 10.6 installer disc and use the Disk Utility in the installer menus to format the external hard drive to have two partitions, one large enough to have the entirety of the internal drive, and one with at least 20 GB to install 10.6, and install Data Rescue. Once that is done, you can boot off the Data Rescue partition with the Option key at startup, and run Data Rescue to recover the internal drive to the second partition of the external drive.
If neither Disk Warrior works, nor Data Rescue works, it is time to consider how valuable the data is. If it is several thousand dollars worth, it may be worth trying http://www.drivesavers.com/ which will cost that much to try to recover from a "dead" hard drive.
Apple might offer an intermediate cost, though I would check with them how much it is before choosing between one and the other.
