Anyway, googled a lot, Arch64 seems like just the distro I was always looking for. I'm a very experienced windows user and ultra newbie when it comes to *nix, mainly because I was hopping distros last 3-4 years, not having any of them longer then a week.
Arch64 it is. And I need help. (so much for the intro)
So, I'll post here questions throughout the installation, hoping you guys will help me get this thing runnin' as soon as possible.
First, anyone knows will and how will Ralink 2500 wireless network card work on Arch64? Cause, if it won't, I might as well stay on XP (and I'd really hate to do that).
Second, is there a tool to convert NTFS partition to ext3 or some other linuxish FS? Mind, I don't wanna loose my super uber kewl 350 gig sized rock (hell yeah!) collection.

Welcome to Arch. I love your enthusiasm, but I also hope that you're aware that Arch is designed for intermediate and advanced Linux users, and last time I looked, that particular group did not include "ultra newbies".
Having said that, feel free to forge ahead, if you still want to.
Re your questions, we have both the rt2500 and rt2x00 packages in the extra and unstable repos, respectively. Re ntfs, in general, it is not possible to convert one file system to another. What you need to do is back up your data, create your preferred new file system, and restore your data. I can imagine that you might have difficulty finding somewhere to back up 350G (hell yeah!), so pecan's suggestion might be the way to go. I'll just add that if you only want read access to your uber cool stuff, that is provided by the kernel. ntfs-3g is for read/write access.

Fresh Install Windows 7 x64 IE 9 Flash Player Crash

Greetings All,
I am working on a major imaging prject for my organization. I'm getting ready to create a new image for some of our machines so I was getting the reference computers ready. I have noticed that when flash player is enabled in IE 9 it crashes the browser. I get the "Internet Explorer has stopped working" error. I can click the close program button, IE will try to launch the same page again and i get the error again with a bar on the bottome of the IE window stating "A problem with this webpage caused Internet Explorer to close and reopen the tab". After a few rounds of this I get the "Internet Explorer has stopped trying to restore this website." This is occuring on two different machines that I have been preping.
Here are the details of what I have done to these machines: (Dell E6420 and Dell E6320)
1. Installed Windows 7 x64 from install media (blanked the drive so fresh install)
2. Installed SEP 11.0.6200.754
3. Installed all drivers fresh off of Dell's website.
4. Installed Office 2010.
5. Ran and updated EVERYTHING from MICROSOFT update, SP1 and IE 9 included.
6. Went to Adobe.com and installed the latest Acrobat, Flash, and Shockwave Player from the links on the main page.
7. Rebooted and now anytime I go to any page with Flash objects I get the above error.
Here are version:
Windows 7 x64 SP1
IE 9.0.8112.16421
Shockwave Flash Object (Enabled in Manage Add-ons) 10.2.159.1
As said these are two brand new machines, two fresh loads, two batches of software fresh from the web, and two machines having unacceptable problems when Flash is installed. What's up here?

I’m going to take a moment and do two things, bump the thread, and provide a short synopsis on where we stand on this issue.
After much trial and error and the help of Chris I can say with relative certainty that this is an issue with compatibility between nVidia’s Optimus systems and Flash player’s hardware acceleration feature. I don’t know if the issue is just IE9 or IE8. I haven’t taken the time to try this on an Optimus system with IE 8 yet. If someone out there is running one of the Optimus enabled laptops with IE8 and the latest flash installed I would love to hear some feed back.
Ultimately IE8 vs. IE9 is an inconsequential issue. Soon Microsoft will start pushing IE 9 as an important update meaning that the problem will need to be fixed or we’ll be faced with more users having the problem.
I have posted about the issue in the nVidia forums, Dell forums, and Adobe forums. Please find the links to the threads below. I don’t believe the issue to be unique to just the two Dell models that I am dealing with. I have run across numerous complaints along this line from several different OEMs.

Static LOV functions differently in 9.0.2 from 9.0.1

In my previous Portal applications under IAS 9.0.1 I had several static LOV's that contained the following structure:
DISPLAY VALUE RETURN VALUE
Login User Name #PORTAL.wwctx_api.get_user
This worked as expected, the user sees the display of 'Login User Name' in a drop down list on a form, but the users login name was actually inserted into the table when Insert is selected.
I've since upgraded IAS to 9.0.2 (no patchsets installed)
This same LOV no longer works. What gets insert into the table is the string "PORTAL.wwctx_api.get_user" and not the users name, as before.
I know I can kluge something similar into a dynamic LOV but does anyone know why this function call no longer works? I have several similar LOV's that get sequence number nextval's in a similar fashion and they no longer work either.

Skillbuilders - Super LOV plugin

Hi,
I am using Oracle APEX 4.2, I recently installed Skillbuilders - Super LOV plugin into my APEX instance. Everything worked fine.
But later, I used jQuery grid plugin to show the result. and somehow the Super LOV plugin doens't work.
The "Open Dialog" and "Clear Content" button disappeared.
What i have done is inclued the following files at the page edit page

I took a quick look and confirmed your findings. There is a solution, but it's a little complex. I've modified your application to do the first part, which is to "safely" add a new version of jQuery and jQuery UI to APEX:

</script>The first 2 lines here bring in the new version of jQuery and then jQuery UI into the new jQuery object. The second part does two things. First, it uses noConflict to put the new version of jQuery in a custom variable named jQ_1_8_3 (while returning the previous value of jQuery and $ as they were). Second, I use "self-executing anonymous function/expression" to show you how you can still use the $ to refer to the new variable.
Now, the next thing you would need to learn to do is to safely bring in the newer CSS file - that is if bringing it in now breaks something which may happen. That involves CSS scoping, which is an option you see when downloading jQuery UI (at the bottom): http://jqueryui.com/download/
However, to do this, you would need to move to the file system and away from the hosted CDN files. I hope some of this makes sense...

Ianstall from Clone or from install disk

First time post.I do want to say first, how helpful these forums have been to me.
My question? I've purchased a retail leopard and have installed on external hd as it is extremely important for me to have no issues with this computer.Can I clone my external hd {using super duper}to my internal,or would it be better to install leopard to internal hd using install disk.I love the new os and have had no issues with it. thanks for all the great info.

Yes, you can safely clone your external HD onto your internal drive using SuperDuper.
I would first clone whatever you have on your internal HD to another external drive - that way you cannot go wrong, no matter what happens.

Safari won't open and crashes

Hi, I am having a repetitive issue with Firefox where it just freezes up ("not responding). Most of the time it never responds and I have to just shut it all down and restart. When I do this, even though I click the option to check for a solution and close the program, it thinks for a second and gives me the following "problem signature" but it doesn't inform me of any solution. Here is what it usually says:

At this point firefox totally shuts down and does not restart unless I open it again. When this happens I get the "this is embarrassing" screen where I can uncheck or leave checked what I want to be restored. I will point out that I usually have a few windows and multiple tabs in each window open at any given time. I don't know if this factors into it because I never only have one window or tab open to compare it to. I also generally leave them open even when I close my laptop so basically they stay open until the next time is crashes. Maybe this is the issue? Not sure. I also sometimes get an error type message about a script not working right. The most recent one is:

I only use Firefox generally, browser-wise. I am using IE to post this because Firefox just keeps freezing and when I try to restart it and re-open the previous windows I had open, it freezes again. I do not have Chrome or any other browser installed. I love Firefox!
Thank you for any help you can provide. I skipped over some of the recommendations that are generally suggested before posting a question but they all would have involved scrapping the many tabs I have open and then I would lose all of them because they aren't bookmarked. I hope that doesn't sound really stupid. I'm (obviously) not super technically inclined when it comes to the internet. Thanks again for reading this and I would very much appreciate any input.
Oh and I am using Windows 7 and I think the Firefox version is 31.0

Try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

IPad No Display - Goes to DFU if left ON - iTunes detects in Recovery

Hello World,
I have an iPad2 WiFi 16GB that has gone dead. I was perfectly working a few weeks back but now it’s almost dead.
The problem was first observed on a morning when I tried to press the home button and the screen wouldn’t come on. I thought the battery was down and tried to charge it. Having connected it to a charger, there were no charge indications displayed on its LCD. Usually I see the red battery charge icon when connected to a power source. In the evening when I came back from office, it was still stuck on the blank screen with zero display no backlight either. I swapped with another charger but still the same story. Then I tried to hard reset it, and viola, the screen powered up and booted back again. No issues for 2 days. Then the same problem on 3rd day and so I hard reset it again and when it booted back I noticed that the charge was about 70%. So I knew the problem was not due to low charge. This started going on for a month. As time passed I couldn’t hard reset it straight away and it was getting tougher to get the iPad working. I would have to keep pressing the home button and power button for more than 20 seconds for the screen to come back up. My chances of waking the iPad was better if I connected it to a charger and if the battery was charged above 90%. It became harder and harder to get the iPad working. I observed that if the iPad is always connected to the charger this problem never happens. You can leave it for a week and no issues at all. It is when there is no charger connected to it and if the iPad blanks the screen due to inactivity and within 10 minutes of standby the problem starts to appear.
Since this was happening quite often I thought it could be a problem with the recently updated 7.0.4. So I thought I would upgrade it to 7.0.6 and see how it goes. With the blank screen iPad I connected to its USB cable and to my surprise iTunes detects it in DFU mode. This is the DFU with blank screen not the recovery screen that shows up with "Connect to iTunes picture" on the screen. But, if I try to update the iOS it would get stuck at the progress bar forever. No activity is observed at this point. The only way to reinstall the OS is try to hard reset the iPad by pressing the home + power buttons for more than 20 (if you are lucky) seconds and see if it comes out from DFU with a boot logo of Apple. During power up keep pressing the home button so that it enters into the recovery mode ("Connect to iTunes picture"). Then iTunes can reinstall it. But when it reboots same problem. So I know it’s not the iOS issue. Something else would have gone wrong. As time passed by the iPad wouldn’t wake up at all. It wants to be in DFU all the time. The 20 second hard reset work around too failed and it was impossible to get the iPad working. I thought it could be the battery playing up. So I purchased the iPad2 battery off ebay for $13 and replaced it. The multi-meter showed it had about 3.4v before replacing (the one in it showed about 2.8v). But, still the same issue. There is no way the iPad displays anything except if I connect to iTunes and try to reinstall the iOS. In that case it would get stuck in the progress bar at 0% with the Apple logo on top.
I need some expert opinion here. Taking it to apple for repair is not an option and the iPad is out of warranty. I would like to repair this myself and would like to know the cause of such an issue. I am an advanced user so any wise observation, expert opinions are welcome. Appreciate your time in advance.

I also have had this problem, although it's not application specific. It can happen when I'm in any application including Safari, Photoshop, MS Office, Dreamweaver. (I don't have any video games installed). Would love to know if anyone has any answers out there!

CD, DVD and ipod nano issues

I just bought a new iPod nano- the first I have ever owned. I installed the iTunes software and that works okay. I plugged in the nano to the computer and the computer recognizes the nano, but iTunes does not. When I open iTunes, I get the following error message: "iTunes Setup Assistant. Warning! The registry settings used by the itunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a sreult of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes." I have tried reinstalling iTunes several times and it still won't work. I did install the software on my brother's computer and it worked fine, but I can't use that computer on a regular basis. Please help!!!! Thanks!

reboot and repair
reboot the PC (very important), and then do a repair install of itunes. go to your Add/Remove programs, select itunes, click "change/remove" and select "repair".

reinstall the itunes drivers for importing and burning

X1 Carbon is the worst thinkpad I have ever had - think before you buy

I just got X1 Carbon. Let's make it clear that this notebook is not worth the money. X230 is probably much better choice. You will get much better notebook with better hardware, better battery time, better size. It is not worth to buy X1 just because it is thin.
Actually when you have X230 in your hands it feels much smaller than X1 Carbon!!!

No i7 with 8GB RAM
No 1000Gbps NIC (not even USB adapter with 1Gbps)
I dont understand how business notebook does not have 1Gbps NIC. My 3.5 years old X61 has got 1Gbps NIC. Brand new X1 Carbond does not have it. I cannot believe it.
Don't buy it. It is waist of money. Look at Toshiba or MacBook or X230. They are much better notebooks. I will look at Toshiba next after this bad experience. It is clear that Lenovo is not IBM and they started making compromizes. Thinkpad is not as it used to be.

I gotta say I really love this baby, but I can't really use it for anything. Especially not in the field.
Personally I must say the X1 Carbon Touch ticks all the boxes for me. When I travel, I take along a USB 3.0 Ethernet Gigabit dongle and a Displayport to VGA dongle. That is all I need on the road and frankly, that is the price you pay for being able to use such a thin notebook. This is no different from any MacBook Air, Asus Zenbook or Samsung Series 9. You want thin, you accept dongles, it's as simple as that.
And when I sit in my office, every bit of expansion is handled by the Lenovo USB 3.0 Dock. 2 screens, audio, Gigabit Ethernet and 5x USB 3.0 ... The nice thing about this dock is that it also accommodates Macbooks with OSX nowadays. Alternating between my Carbon and my Mac has now become a breeze ...:-)

Drag & Drop in finder and spotlight stopped working after 10.5.7 update

Fresh brand new iMac here, clean install 10.5.6, everything fine, copied user data back, all fine, applied 10.5.7 update, bang, admin and user can no longer drag & drop.
I did a permission fix which finds a LOT wrong, that worked, once, next restart gave me the same problem. Running permission fix did not resolve it this time.
Seeing the machine needs to be urgently used I'm re-installing but would LOVE to see a fix as I have 3 other machines with exactly the same problem.

Try a restart.
Try trashing your com.apple.finder pref located in HD/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences, then restart.
Apply the stand alone combo update 10.5.6 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

ITunes Setup Assistant Warning Dialogue Box

I upgraded to version 6.0.4.2 and now a dialogue box appears each time I start iTunes.
It is titled "iTunes Setup Assistant" and has the following text: Warning! The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes.
It does go away when I click on the Ok button and I can import and burn songs so it seems be just a nuisance. How do I get rid of it permanently?

How can I submit a song I wrote to Adobe, which was published in an art journal?

I want to share this with Adobe. Partly, because it was published in an award winning arts journal, The Bell Tower, and worth a look. Also, because I want to know if it is something Adobe can use in an advertising capacity. I studied design and photography at Tyler Junior College in the Pirtle building, here in Tyler, Texas. I won the cover design in 2014, but had all three of my submissions excepted this year, 2015. I graduated Summa cum Laude and currently freelance in my field. I am interested in talking with anyone who might help me find a way to use it, somehow, with, or for Adobe. All input is greatly appreciated. But be gentle!
