Gparted under kde [SOLVED]

I recently began playing w/ the kde packages and find myself looking for a method to use gparted under kde.  Since it requires gtk, I'm pretty sure it won't run under KDE
# gparted

99.9% of gtk/gnome programs can run in kde without trouble. A different toolkit only means loading up more libraries than you normally would, and having to use different ways of making the theme match to the rest of your system. Some people use qtcurve-kde4 for kde and qtcurve-gtk2 under lxappearance or a similar program, some use gtk-kde4, some use gtk-qt-engine, whatever. I find the first option the simplest.
I use gparted regularly.
That error looks like you're trying to run it as plain root from a terminal. Try installing gksu and running it with "gksu gparted".
Even normal 'sudo gparted', while typically not advised, I believe would work.

  • Firefox 3.5 damn slow under KDE 4.2

    Hi Folks,
I'm using Firefox 3.5 from extra and it is so damn slow under KDE 4.2.4, compositing enabled (Intel GFX, Driver version xf86-video-intel 2.8.0 from AUR, KMS on, Kernel 2.6.30).
Furthermore I installed "extra/gtk-qt-engine 1.1-1" to get a good integration into the look&feel of KDE.
The application itself has a normal performance, but the menus are very laggy.
In addition to gtk-qt-engine I've tried "community/gtk-kde4", but that seemed to make things even worse
I think that those gtk-qt engines are to blame, but I don't know where to search for issues/problems.
Another thing is: If I say "Use my KDE style/fonts in GTK Applications" in KDE system settings dialog, Firefox looks as follows
    Whats happening here?
Is there any known trick, to get a decent performance in Firefox 3.5 under KDE 4.2?
    Best regards,
    mefiX

I just use QTCURVE as a theme, it has a native KDE3, KDE4 and GTK theme giving a constant look all around plus it is better looking then oxygen imho (especially when set to AQUA).

about performance, did you disable the Ipv6 stuff in about:config? when i used FF i noticed ipv6 dns was on by default and really slowing it down. I since switched to Opera10 which is *way* faster and has a native QT4 build instead of FF's GTK.

  • Evolution Icons missing when run under kde

    Hello all:
Can't really find a solution for this while searching so thought I would post.  When I start evolution under KDE, just about every icon(folders, symbols, etc) is replaced with a box with a red X in the middle.  Obviously, it cannot find the icons to use.  How can I fix this?
    Thanks,
    -FS

When you run gnome-session as your desktop manager, it automatically loads the settings controller that handles icons and the like.  When you launch anything else (such as your kde or my fluxbox) you have to load that settings manager manually.
Stick this in your .xinitrc just before you launch kde:
    gnome-settings-daemon &
That should fix ya right up.

  • [SOLVED] ConkySymbols font broken under KDE

Ever since the fontconfig update yesterday, the ConkySymbols font (http://wiltur.deviantart.com/#/d3ij3mi) is mysteriously broken for me. It just prints black rectangles instead.
All other fonts seem to be fine though. I've even downloaded the ConkySymbols .ttf again, but when I open the file in KDE Font Preview the preview pane stays blank.
How do I fix this? Of course it might also be due to the KDE 4.9.1 upgrade somehow, I'm not sure.

Great to hear the fix worked. To mark the thread as solved, just edit your first post and put [SOLVED] in the title. Thanks.

  • [Solved] Print dialog under KDE broken?

    Hi,
this is how the print dialog has been looking for me in KDE (system is up-to-date) for the last 2-3 months now.
I was hoping it would get fixed after a few KDE/CUPS updates but some time has passed, updates came and it's still broken.
Is anyone else experiencing the same problem? Is there a way to fix this?
    Thank you

arojas wrote:which print dialog is that? It doesn't look like a KDE print dialog to me, looks more like GTK. Do you use the oxygen-gtk style?
hmm, I am not sure. in systemsettings I have this:
application appearance -> style -> oxygen
workspace appearance -> window decorations -> oxygen
workspace appearance -> desktop -> theme -> air
gtk styles and fonts -> useanotherstyle: QtCurve
I don't know if this oxygen style/decoration/theme is gtk or not. how do I check that? I have this oxygen-gtk package installed on my system but I don't know if it's in use somewhere or not.
the funny thing is, this does not happen for firefox for example. but it does for EOG (eye of gnome) where both of them are gnome apps if I am correct. it does not happen for kate (kde text editor), does for gedit (now that I opened gedit, I see it's broken in the same way as this print dialog from the screenshot above is).
@msx - I'll try reproducing the bug with fresh .kde and post results here. extra/kdeadmin-system-config-printer-kde wasn't on my system, but I installed it, rebooted but nothing changed. other packages you mentioned were already on my system.

  • Restoring wine menu in KDE [SOLVED]

Hi, i'm using KDE 4.4.1 and wine. Before i decided to clean up mess in KDE menu, all wine installed menu items were under "lost and found"
    As http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Win … Fix.5B1.5D states, i have edited /etc/xdg/menus/kde-applications.menu
Now i had Wine menu, but i didn't need all items, so i ran kde menu editor, and some items were removed. After relogin, wine menu didn't have "Programs" submenu at all :s. I deleted wine menu from KDE menu
    Now, hot to restore that?
I figure out that all desktop files created by wine are in /home/bagheera/.local/share/applications/
In /home/bagheera/.config/menus/ i have several files:
    -rw-r--r-- 1 bagheera users 15647 03-15 12:22 applications-kmenuedit.menu

  • Problem starting OpenOffice with KDE [Solved]

I just did a clean Arch install witk KDE desktop. After I installed OpenOffice with
    pacman -Sy openoffice-base
when I try to start openoffice I get the following error message
"The application cannot be started. An internal error occurred."
I tried to reinstall OpenOffice but that didn't help.
Any ideas whats going wrong? OpenOffice worked fine with Gnome before I did a clean install.
    -A-

this problem is caused as some files on the install or somewhere else got assigned root permissions so that is the problem. i deleted the folder and everything recreated ok.
I have the same problem, but deleting ~/.openoffice.org2 haven't solved the problem, so I looked up this forum for other solutions and nothing helped.
From other topic: That's not a java problem, I think.
    Any ideas?

  • Memory management / Memory Leak under KDE 4.2?

If I should do something a little more structured to check this out, I'm open to suggestions.  I'm mostly hoping to confirm or deny this behavior with others.
For context -- I've been using GNOME with Arch on this hardware since mid-December (when I first installed Arch) until last week.  Since then I've been using KDE 4.2.  Prior to Arch, I'd run GNOME under several distros on this same hardware as well.  During all this time I've had conky or some screenlet or whatever indication running to show me RAM usage (like a lot of us do).   It's one of those things that I don't think about much, but notice when it's different than I expect.
I have 3GB RAM, and under GNOME the only time I ever saw it approach or pass 1GB used was when I knew I was doing memory intensive things (VM running + other tasks)
Under GNOME I was seeing about 300-350MB used at startup, or if I'd close down every windowed app or anything I was doing at any given point in time.
KDE 4.2 seems to start up with about 350-450, which is fine.
Here's my issue, and it's confusing to me, possibly due to my lack of understanding regarding memory management.
Over time in KDE 4.2, as reported by conky or various monitoring widgets I've had running, my memory usage will gradually creep up until just about all my RAM is shown as in use.  This doesn't take long, say 1-2 hours.  I also don't have to be doing anything special during that time.  I haven't tested to see if it will creep up with me doing nothing, but I definitely DON'T have to do memory hungry tasks for this to happen.
Interestingly, the KDE system monitor shows a more reasonable amount, usually.  Currently my widget is reporting 2162MB used, with 1640 cached, and the only thing I have open is this firefox window.  (And no, firefox is not using 2GB of RAM)  Checking the system monitor shows no excessive RAM consumption by any process, and .48GB used.
Now you might think "Just subtract out the cached RAM, which isn't hurting anything, and you get a number that jives with System Monitor."  That's true, but I have two problems with that:
    1) Why did I never see anythign like this under GNOME?
    2) When my used RAM as shown by the widget gets extremely high like this, I start using *SWAP*.  I can tell you for certain that my swap usage was at zero for all the time I've had this computer prior to using KDE 4.2 these last few days.  Currently I'm using 64MB of swap -- not much, but why am I using any?  And, I know that if I don't reboot soon, that number will also start to grow, though more slowly.
I used to run munin just for fun, maybe I should start doing that again just to get some hard data...
    Any ideas?

KDE .. probably nepomuk .. is touching much more files on the hard disk than GNOME, thus making the kernel cache them (that's good).
64MB of  swap is nothing, the defaults behaviour of the kernel is to swap some very  rare used programs (login perhaps) in order to have more RAM free for cache. The swapiness nob controls the behaviour (http://kerneltrap.org/node/3000).
Summary: you are really only using 480MB ram

  • Freenas under Virtualbox [SOLVED]

    Hi,
I am trying out Freenas under virtualbox, I am looking to run server under virutal machine wondered if I can test it via my browser on same machine or one on my local network?
    SOLVED http://mychael.gotdns.com/blog/2007/05/ … -bridging/

If I leave it as "ro" the filesystem stays as readonly and I can see the following before the login prompt:
    mount: can't find / in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
    and then
kinit: mounted root (xfs filesystem) readonly
fstab has no reference to any sda.

  • Nautilus Desktop appears under KDE

    Hi,
Here is my problem : I just installed KDE and notice that when i switch from 2nd to 3th desktops, or when i close my session, nautilus is launched behind.
It's a consequence of modification i've made a while ago when gnome3 was release, i tried to have openbox, also try to have compiz as standalone. For that, i've made script containing mauchers for Cortina (wallpaper changer), tint2, nautilus, gnome-terminal.
Each of them now launch at ked startup (but not with gnome shell). I tried to delete all file involved (xinitrc, reference in gnome-session-properties), but stil got 2-3 cortina launching, nautilus behind KDE, etc.
Search string among "cortina" among file didn't get any usefull match.
    Two questions then :
    - Any way to find the file using the PID ?
    - Does anyone as a file in mind that could be involved ?
    Thx folks,
    RS

I'm confused: did you create your own script to do this?  Typically, .desktop files for autostart apps appear under ~/.config/autostart when using GNOME or KDE, and can just be deleted.  If you created your own script, it should just be a matter of no longer running that script at startup, right?

  • Printers not shown in gtk apps under KDE 4.7

Sorry if asked before, I searched a lot and tried many things but couldn't find a fix.
No gtk based app are showing my configured printers. This includes LibreOffice, GIMP and Chromium. The printers are, however, shown properly in every kde app and in Opera. http://localhost:631/printers/ also shows "No printers."
    I'm running KDE 4.7.2.
    Things I already tried:
    - cp /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.default /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
    - I already have installed libgnomeprint
    - HostNameLookups Double in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
    - I'm already in lpadmin group, which I also added to /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
I don't really know when this problem started, probably a few weeks ago.
    Thanks in advance.

Same issue here. Problem only occurs if you are using a custom shortcut (not one of the shortcuts mentioned in Main Shortcut.
I did a quick search and this is the only related post I have found on the topic so it seems like an Arch only problem. If it is a KDE problem, this http://www.commit-digest.org/issues/201 … 79ffe2ed8/ bug-fix could be the reason.

  • Application hotkeys and keyboard layouts in KDE[SOLVED]

    Hi,
For as long as I use Linux, I've been annoyed by this particular trouble: change layout from en to ru, for instance, and get your hotkeys (like Ctrl-S) unresponsive. Granted, that the trouble sometimes goes - to come back later on . I tried Google, but no luck. Which is kinda funny, because any bilingual user must be all too familiar with the issue. I can't even be sure whether it's some systemwide setting or an application responsibility.
Now I've run into a something like a perfect testcase :
    OpenOffice 3.0.1 and Firefox 3.0.8:
    (1) In Arch the hotkeys like Ctrl-S and Ctrl-T work in both apps regardless of the keyboard layout. (KDE3 and KDE4)
    (2) In Pardus the hotkeys in both apps work in en layout but do not in ru layout. (KDE3)
    What is it?
Last edited by Llama (2009-04-05 13:27:48)

Control Center(KDE)->Keyboard Layout->Layout->Include latin layout checkbox needs to be checked. After that Command lines for the respective layouts look like
    setxkbmap -model pc104 -layout us
setxkbmap -model pc104 -layout ru,us -variant ,winkeys
    The trouble's gone.

  • Mystery icon, KDE [solved]

    Hi,
Really stupid question, but a mystery icon has appeared in my KDE panel. Clicking it has no effect. Removing the panel and adding a new one results in the icon reappearing.
Does anyone have any idea what it might be?
Link to screenshot below, the icon is the brown box like icon next to my volume icon

    Thanks!

  • Sound stuck. Alsa, atiixp and KDE [solved]

    SEE http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/4325 FOR SOLUTION
    Here`s my story:
I was watching some DVDs, relaxing and all, however when I inserted one DVD and tried to mount it, system froze.
After reboot I tried doing the same thing. Unfortunately, few moments after mount /mnt/cd system froze again.
,,Well what the heck, must be corrupt DVD" - I thought and decided to spend evening listening to the music.
But oh no, amaroK was acting strange.
Music seemed to be stuck on few first accords, it was playing them again, and again, and again.... Well you get the picture.
Since I am using amaroK 1.4 beta2 (it`s great!) I thought it may be a bug.
However my attempts to get some music flowin` with XMMS were unsuccessful too.
After a cruise to kcontrol > sound system > test sound I made sure that it wasn`t amaroK or XMMS that were buggy.
Tried changing to OSS, got some sound, however it was reaaaaally choppy and this time it stuck somewhere in the middle of the track (test sound ,,track`` that is).
Logs (/var/log/everything.log) look strange too, they were full of this:
    Mar 30 23:58:28 localhost [fglrx:firegl_rmmap] *ERROR* map 0xdd325b10 still in use (map_count=1)
Mar 30 23:58:28 localhost [fglrx:firegl_free_buffer_queue] *ERROR* buffer qeue 0xdd325b00 still mapped

    As always, any ideas appreciated.
EDIT: Just noticed that lshwd does not recognize modules.
I guess it has something to do with my issue.
If hwd -u will help, I`m going to feel real stupid
    EDIT2: Nope, didn`t help.
Tried issuing cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp without X running, went fine.
Tried aplay somefile.wav, sound stuck again.

I use latest archck, I always keep synced with testing.
I have blacklisted modem driver long time ago.
And I`m pretty happy with fglrx.
Even worse, today I`ve tried plugging my USB mouse, everything`s fine, few seconds after ,,startx`` I was able to use it (while no desktop was loaded), however KDE stuck on ,,Initializing Peripherals`` for few seconds and I was unable to continue using USB mouse.
    Touchpad worked fine tho.
Tried reinstalling alsa, hwd, archck, no results.

I suspect that this may be hwd or udev bug.
    Any ideas?
