GPIB, can't find instrument

Hello group,
I have a question about my GPIB interface that failed to recognize a device.
I'd love to describe the problem here and am very willing to hear your
suggestions.
I work in a lab. I used LabVIEW to write a program to communicate with a
multimeter. The program has been working very well in the past two years.
Now I want to add some function to my program so that I can control a
temperature controller at the same time as I control the multimeter. So I
connected the temperature controller to the GPIB cable of the multimeter and
asked the GPIB getting started program to scan for the new instruments.
Surprisingly, an error message saying " Scans for instruments failed because
it didn't find any instrument.". That is to say, both the mu
ltimeter and the
temperature controller can't be seen. I checked all the connections and they
are all firm. I then tried to restart the computer, reinstall the GPIB
interface, change another GPIB cable. But the problem persists.
I am now guessing that the GPIB interface of the temperature controller does
not work--it has not been used since day one so we are not sure if it came
this way or just gets "rusted" in the years in our lab. Before returning the
temperature controller to factory for a check, I wonder if any expert here
could give me some suggestions on what to try. Thanks!
Regards,
Fan Zhang

Ian thanks for your suggestion. It does come with a RS232 interface. So if
the GPIB port really does not work, I would be able to talk to the
instrument via it.
The temperature controller is a bit old. It is a LakeShore product that was
bought probably 10 years ago. You are right. The interface can be changed in
front panel. And it was set to be GPIB when I was trying to detect it. So it
is unlikely it is the reason. Thank you though!

  • PCI-GPIB card cannot find instruments in Windows 7

hello, i am new to use Labview to control lab equipments. would be very appreciated any help in advance. Here is my case.
We have two NI PCI-GPIB card in lab. They are working well in old PCs with Windows XP. I installed them to new PC with Windows 7 enterprize edition. Labview version is 2014. The NI-488.2 14.0 and Ni-VISA 14.0.1 is also installed.
when running NI MAX, i could see PCI-GPIB card, so far everthing is fine, no error code. But when i click scan for instruments. there is no result, also no error code message. I borrowed a GPIB-USB-HS controller from another lab. It woks well with the same GPIB cable and equipment. i could see the equipment and communicate. i tried both our PCI-GPIB card and got the same result.
Does someone happen to see the similar problem?
    Thank you.
    Yutong

Hi thanks for looking into my problem. here is some update.
first, i installed the PCI card to the new PC, it does not work as described above. then, i took it from the PC and installed the GPIB-USB-HS controller. It works well to find our equipment and everything is fine.
second, the oringinal old pc with this PCI card is down, so i used another old pc. this makes problems more complicated. i installed the PCI card on the old PC and it not work. then I connected the USB controller, it works fine. same problem as the new PC.
third, i tried both PCI card. they have the same problem. i think it is unlikely these two cards are both damaged.
I also followed instruction from  KnowledgeBase 1UO68A5P: "Scan for Instruments" Fails in Measurement & Automation Explorer. does not improved. the settings of PCI card is shown as attached.
    thank you.

  • Trouble with 3rd party VST installs for Garageband, can't find instruments

    Hi,
I am having trouble with Audio Units for Garageband when installing 3rd party software, VSTs, loops, instruments. I have more issues with Logic Pro. I am hoping that it is the same underlying issue and that I am just missing something. I have the manuals (not great for troubleshooting). I am confused with some installs use User Library and others use the Computer Library. I do go to the mfgs sites for updates. The installs sometimes work as standalones but I don't see ALL of the components of the software in say Garageband or Logic. Mostly, I am missing the "instruments" and "loops" that I want to access within the DAW. Some examples:
    • Here is some of the software I am talking about:  East West sample libraries (Play and Native Instruments); Vienna Symphonic librarires; Sylenth1 (just last night); Sample Tank 2 and Total Workstation 2 from IK Multimedia and others.
    • In GB I see the Audio Units for Vienna, Play, Sylenth, some of the IK Multimedia but NOT any instruments when I go to the "Sound Generator" -- I seem to be missing the instruments and loops. I see less AUs in Logic Pro. Some of these are VST instruments.
    • Can I just drag-drop samples to the library folders to fix this?
    • The plug-ins do not seem to work (though Sylenth1 worked for a single sound). When there is a standalone app (as in Sample Tank), I finally got the "sounds" to be reinstalled and loaded, those sounds/samples don't show up in any DAW.
    • When and if the sounds/loops/samples show up in GB's "Instruments" section will I be able to tell that they belong to that particular software or library?
    Thanks in advance.
    John

Found the answer myself, it was simple:
    • Select the Track
    • Show the Instrument (info area)
    • Click on Edit
    • Click on the "Sound Generator" pop up field.
    • At the bottom of the pop-up list, select from the Audio Units that you have installed. This is where you see "Sample Tank 2, Vienna Instruments..."
    • NEXT -- IMPORTANT:   CLICK ON THE PICTURE next to the Sound Generator pop-up field. The AU unit loads up, the interface pops up, you load up the instruments in this AU Unit. You do NOT see the sounds from the AU unit in the normal Apple instrument list.
This was not intuitive but once you know it, fairly simple.
Still, the devil is in the details -- more questions on the way.

  • Can't find INSTRUMENTAL songs for iMovie, slideshows, etc

Yes, I know there's a lot instrumentals, but I'd like the "genre" to state that in order to make it a bit easier for me to get the song that suits my movie or slideshows best.
Right now, it takes me a ton of time just to find the right song in iTunes.
And, iTunes is a bit screwed up also. The other day, I found a classical orchestra playing Beethoven in the "Country " music genre.
I really love iTunes because it's been so easy for me to put the music into my movies, AFTER I've spent a lot of time searching...

Yes, there are many instrumental only songs, but what I might have not mentioned is in iTunes, there's really no classification for "Instrumental" only.

  • Can't find instrument

I'm wondering if there are any electric guitars in the lineup of software instruments that come with 08 standard. I looked, and the only guitar is the steel string acoustic. Is there an sort of electric guitar software instrument? If there is, what jam pack is it on? If there isn't what effects could I apply to the steel string acoustic in order to give it a rock guitar sound? I tried distortion and amp simulation, but I couldn't get an actual electric guitar sound without it being obvious I was using a keyboard.

Do you have greyed-out loops in your Loop Browser? When you try to use one of these, you should be prompted to install the additional content. Select the "install from DVD" option and insert your System Restore 2 disk (or so).
Or just insert the disk without the prompt and go to the Custom Install option to select the loops and instruments.

  • Can't find plugins directory when installing Native Instruments Komplete

Hi - I recently tried to install Native Instruments Komplete and the installation stops with a message saying that 'setup could not find your browser's plugins directory - click browse and locate the plugins directory - to install to this directory click install - you may install the plugin into a different directory but the plugin may not work properly with your browser. The default directory that it shows me (presumably the one it can't find?) C:\windows\system32\macromed\flash.
I went to Native Instruments with this problem, but they have told me to go to Adobe saying that, 'The error message you are receiving is related to the Flash Player and not to the NI installation - so please contact Adobe for assistance with this.'
Can anyone help please? Thanks! (I'm running Windows 7 Professional (64 bit) with Service Pack 1)

    Hi Pete,
I would have expected Flash Player to be installed with the Suite, but I don't think it will hurt to install it again (in fact, you'll get the most up to date version if you haven't upgraded recently.)
Flash Player on windows comes in two flavors.  One is an ActiveX control for Internet Explorer, the other is a plugin for all other browsers.  One thing to note, if you're on a 64 bit machine the directory for the Flash Player files will be different than a 32 bit install.  Here's where you typically find them:
    32 bit: C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash
    64 bit: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash

  • I just upgraded to Lion and can't find my EXS24 sampler instruments

The instruments that came with Logic are still in their place, but can't find user sampler instruments.  It used to be (user / library / application support / logic / sampler instruments, but there is no "library" folder in the user folder anymore.  Any suggestions?

    Jericho...
The User/Library folder is now hidden in Lion. To get to the "user" Library folder you now have to access it from Finder>Go>Go To Folder.
Once there, type this: /users/(your administrator name here)/Library/
    Hope this helps...
I've been working in Lion just fine until tonight! I lost my EXS24II sampler Instruments too... but probably for another reason?  -- Andy

  • Where can I find more synth "instruments" for GB??

I'm writing songs in GB for my band to play, and the keyboard player is using a 80s synthesizer. I'm looking to buy or (free download??) instruments that would better approximate actual synthesizer sounds. I'm very unhappy with the selection in GB. Looking more for New Wave/ Disco type sounds. Also, is there anywhere I can buy one instrument at a time? I'd also like a harpsichord, but I'm not interested in any of the other instruments in Jam Pack 4. Thanks!

  • Where can I find a full list of the Logic Pro X Software Instruments?

Where can I find a full list of the Logic Pro X Software Instruments (the ones you can play with a MIDI keyboard)?  From what I've read so far, there are a number of new software instruments in the LPX additional content (as well as loops, etc, but I'm looking for the software instruments).  I cannot seem to find this information in the product pages or documentation, though.
With older versions, I was able to find a list of all of the software instruments that came with the software, and all of the software instruments that came with the Jam Packs.  Is that list available from Apple, or does anyone have one from somewhere else?

    Hi Guys,
I exported my folders from a clean LPX install, does this give you what you want?
First one is the Patch instruments:

  • Where can I find VI Description & usage for VIs in Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 2009\vi.lib\variable

In the the said folder are many VIs.  They are all part of the NI_Variable.lvlib.    However there is no help or description (context help just shows the terminals and names) for many of these VIs.  Where can you find more 'help' on these VIs, the block diagram is password protected.

    Hi phillman,
If there is no detailed help in the LabVIEW help, or on ni.com, you will probably need to ask about specific VIs for more detailed information. I would first search the LabVIEW help and the website, however.
Let me know if you have specific VI questions!

  • Where can I find a list of the 1600 /- instruments included in the new Logic Pro X?

    Greetings,
Where can I find a list of the 1600+/- instruments included in the new Logic Pro X?
    Thanks all!

AFAIK, there is no master list. If you have the Silicon Prairie "Tools" utilities, you can compile your own lists. See: Silicon Prairie - FrameMaker Products
The best approach is to simply use the Copy Special to pick up the paragraph and character styles that you want to add to your new template and build the template piecemeal, i.e. create one FM file for your tables, another for your page layouts/sizes, another for your tags, cross-refs, etc. Then combine those as required to build the final template. This Lego-like approach is much more flexible and allows you to modify base-components and quickly make a new brand new template.

I tried to control Agilent 34970A through RS232,

right(verified), and the parameter such as baud
rate is the same as the computer.
    (I am using LabVIEW 6.1)
Can anyone give me an explain about my problem?
    Thank you very much!

    > "VISA Assistant" is the name of a utility that ships with Agilent VISA. I am not sure if it can work with NI-VISA.
Agilent VISA does work with NI-VISA -- provided everything is installed correctly. A user may wish to use both Agilent VISA and NI-VISA together if they have a mix of IO cards. If NI-VISA is present, then Agilent VISA should be installed in the side-by-side mode, and NI-MAX should set the Passport to On. Then LabVIEW will see all the Agilent cards, and Agilent VISA Assistant will see all the NI-Cards. (The last time I tried this though, NI-MAX didn't see the Agilent cards.)
What was not mentioned in the original question is what VISA configuration is being used. If more specifics are provided a more specific answer can be given.

  • Communicating between GPIB IEEE 488-1978 Instrument and LabView

    Hi,
I'm currently trying to convert some old BBC BASIC Code into Labview 6.1.
The BBC Computer has a GPIB Comms Unit attached to it to communicate with an old Marconi Instruments Microwave Counter 2440 using GPIB IEEE 488-1978.
I am currently trying to get Labview to communicate with the Counter using GPIB 488 vis and a NI GPIB 488.2 Card but I'm not able to get anything out of the Counter or get MAX to even acknowledge the equipment exists.
I was wondering if anyone out there knows if it is possible to communicate with a GPIB IEEE 488-1978 instrument in Labview 6.1 (or any other LV Versions) and if it is, does anyone have a driver for the instrument (Marconi Instruments Microwave Counter 2440 circa 19
    84) or having any helpful tips on the protocol for talking to a IEEE 488-1978 instrument.(I have some previous experience using VISA.)
Many Thanks in Advance for your help.
    Sammy Mason

I have done this with several instruments. It is best to get a hold of the manual for this instrument and see what commands it uses.
MAX will not find this using the *IDN? query. In MAX, open the "Communicate With Instrument" window and type "ID?" (without the quotes), and hit query. You should get some basic information back from your instrument.
I use GPIB Read and GPIB Write most often. Your instrument probably doesn't support much else. Maybe Clear and Poll.
Be careful if you are using a newer, faster computer. There are Knowledge Bases and Discussion Forum topics that discuss the problems that can arise. To prevent these problems, I created my own Read and Write VIs. They just have a few milliseconds delay before the read or writ
    e takes place
