GPIB/TNT PnP DOS Installation Issue

I have a AT-GPIB/TNT PnP board that I am trying to install on a DOS computer. I am using the latest NI488.2 software for DOS.
On bootup, the GPIB software drivers install properly, but the interface cannot be found. When I run ibdiag it detects the correct board but then I get errors saying :
1. Make sure the GPIB cables are disconnected.
2. The base address does not match the address in the ni-pnp.ini file.
3. Another board or device is using the same address space. Try using a different I/O address and run the hardware diagnostic program.
I don't have any cables connected ot the card. The base address (as set using ibconf.exe) does match the address settings in the ni-pnp.ini file. I have tried every possible base address with the IRQ and DMA turned off just to make sure that these were not in conflict. I have tried other ISA slots in the computer. I have disabled other on-board devices in the BIOS to prevent potential conflicts. I have a PCI IO board also in the system. But I have tried changing the addresses with and without this board installed.
Based on the errors, it feels like the address settings may not be making it to the card properly, so that there is an address mismatch between what the computer/driver thinks is installed and what the card thinks it's address actually is.
Any ideas?

I followed one of the links and read the following (I highlighted the critical portions in bold/underline):
If ibdiag completes with no errors, your hardware is functioning properly. If ibdiag returns an error message, go back to the previous step and reconfigure the board to not use a DMA channel or an IRQ. Then shut down the computer, remove the IRQ, DACK, and DRQ jumpers, and boot up again. Rerun the hardware diagnostic test. At this point only the board's base I/O address is being tested. If the diagnostic continues to fail, then there are only three possible reasons:
The Base I/O Address selected has a conflict with another hardware component in your computer. You should try other addresses, being certain to modify the DIP switches and ibconf settings each time.
The Base I/O Address selected in ibconf is not a legal address. If using a Non-Plug and Play board, the Base I/O Address selected in ibconf does not match the DIP switch settings on the board. Sometimes users accidentally set the switches exactly opposite of what they should be. Be certain that you are following the switch diagram given in ibconf correctly.
Note: The AT-GPIB/TNT (PnP) and AT-GPIB/TNT+ have valid address ranges of 0x0100 to 0x03E0 in increments of 0x20 bytes.
The board has been damaged and needs repair. Call National Instruments if you feel this is the case.
I worked the drill as described and I believe that the hardware is not working properly. I will call NI.

I posted a message earlier but didn't word it correctly. We have a Microdyne 2800 receiver that we would like to set up remotely via 488. The receiver works fine in DOS using an older NI-PC2 card with the v2.6 drivers that came with it. However, when we switch to the newer PC-GPIB/TNT(PNP) 488 card with the latest DOS drivers, v2.7.2, it doesn't respond. The receiver recognizes that it received something via the bus but does nothing (it has a little red light that turns on when in remote mode). What prompted us to test it in DOS was that the same thing was happening under WinNT 4.0 using the PNP card and the v1.60 drivers.
In ibic, I'm using the exact same
sequence of commands to setup the card (ibdev, ibclr, and then ibln) and then I use the ibwrt to write the setup string to it. Are there any differences in the cards and/or drivers that I should be aware of?

Some of the common questions I'd ask you about this will be:
1. Has this board work before?
2. Have you tried it in another computer?
3. When installing the board, did you ran the configuration utility and did the query and scan for instruments? (Start > Programs > National Instruments > NI-488.2 > Explore GPIB.... click F5 to Refresh then Select your board from "Devices and Interfaces" and click "Scan for Instruments" then when it finds your instrument click "Communicate with Instrument" and then click "Query")

6. What type of termination character does your instrument uses?
If after looking at this questions and links your board still is not working please give us a call, we may need to try different workarounds or need more information from your system. As far as the information you wrote your board should work fine. Also, I can assume from your info that you have a 488.2 compatible instrument, is this correct?

AT-GPIB/TNT PnP and Sound Blaster 16 Clashing

The Story is:
I have had a AT-GPIB/TNT PnP on a old Pentium 75/Win 95 Machine doing some testing, and havn't had a problem with it.
I now wanted to install a Creative Sound Blaster (Vibra) 16, also PnP ISA, card for basic audio analysis measurements.
The problem is when the Sound Blaster card is installed the PnP BIOS doesn't recognise the GPIB card at all, even with PnP
disabled.
Has anybody seen this before?
Could it be that the PC can only handle 2 ISA PnP cards (there is also a PnP network card)?
Would I be better of with a PCI SB card.
Any help would be gratefull

I had similar struggles with a 1995 vintage Pentium. My ISA GPIB conflicted with PCI sound card and PCI network card. It
tooks me hours to hit upon a sequence of installing the cards, and manually locking in the resources, in order to get them all
working.
Some general suggestions: get back to a configuration that works, say without the sound card. Make note of the resources for
the network card and GPIB card. While your there, examine the other possibilities. You can select other GPIB resource
configurations and see what the I/O range, INT and DMA settings would be. For example, some GPIB resource configurations
don't use INT and DMA at all. Write all of this down.
Then install the sound card, without the GPIB. See what resources it wants, and explore what other configurations it might be
happy with. Sound cards are tricky, because they usually use a lot of resources because they have a lot of functions: wave,
midi, mixer, etc. Some also have "legacy drivers" that mimic the older DOS based sound cards, for backwards compatibility
with games. You may be able to install the sound card and then remove some of these "extra drivers."
With sound card working, and the network card working, reinstall the NI488 software. Then power down and install the GPIB
card. Reboot. You may get lucky and everything just works.
More likely, the GPIB will work and the sound card won't. Go check the GPIB card resources and you'll probably see that the
NI488 drivers snagged one or more of the INT or DMA channels that the sound card was using. Try a different GPIB
configuration, or manually edit the DMA and INT settings to NONE. Also check for I/O range conflicts. (Consult your written
list, because the conflicts won't show in Device Manger -- since the sound card's not working it's not using any resources!)
Hopefully, by telling Device Manager to NOT use Automatic Settings, you can get the GPIB working and still leave enough
resources available for the sound card. Which you will probably have to go back and reinstall, from scratch. Possibly a few
times before you get everything to fit.
How bad do you want that sound card ? :~)
Isn't (Microsoft) plug and play wonderful?
p.s. you might also consider using CMOS setup to disable any motherboard resources you are not using, for example a COM port
that's not connected to anything. Remember to write down EVERYTHING, you do so you can put it back if you have to.

At-gpib/tnt(pnp) addressing error

I have a p133 pc using windows 98 and a pcII/IIa card which works for the attatched set of instructions. I am trying to upgrade the pc system, but cannot get things to work under the new pc. (see attatched word doc)

This board may as you mentioned may be broken. Do you have another board, of the exact model that you could insert instead of the board that you are have issues with. Also could you do a IBPAD(gpib0, 0) to set the address of the card. Could you run spy capture while typing these commands. Could you post your findings with your reply (Including the NI Spy Results). If the results that you are getting with the new card are different to the one of the original then the orginal board may be faulty.
If you card turns up being faulty, if you want it to be repaired then you can call up the NI office in the UK (01635 572410) informing customer services that you need to repair a card having your part number and serial num
ber of your card to hand.

Instrument not recognized - computer too fast for AT-GPIB/TNT board

I have a problem with a potentiostat (PAR 283) connected to ISA AT-GPIB/TNT (not pnp) board. I recently upgraded to a motherboard with 1.8GHz AMD processor. Potentiostat is recognized by other software as "28PD", "28PE" or sometimes just some garbage characters, instead of "283". I'm using driver version 1.6 (1.7 could not recognize the board). In "Measurement&Automation" potentiostat doesn't respond to *IDN? query (error EAB0). FRA analyzer connected to the same board is recognized without a problem. None of the Windows programs can control potentiostat (it's not recognized as "283). One DOS program, however, is able to recognize and control the potentiostat. I tested the whole system with 166MHz compu
ter, and everything worked fine.
My operating system is Win98
Does anyone have idea what could solve the problem?

I don't necessarily have an answer to your problem, but I want to assure you those usually these problems are with the instrument. The IEEE 488.1 standard defines a 3-wire interlocked handshake to prevent any problems due to computer/device speeds.
However, some devices violate this protocol. They rely on internal timing to determine when things should occur on the bus. For example, the talker asserts the DAV hardware line to indicate that data is valid on the bus. Following that, the listener is supposed to latch the data from the bus and then assert NDAC to indicate that it has taken the data from the bus. At the moment that NDAC has been asserted, the talker is allowed to modify the data lines since they have already been latched. However, some devices have noted in the past that their is usually X amount of time that passes from when NDAC is asserted until the data is removed from the wire. In order to improve peformance, they actually assert NDAC sometime before the data has been latched, assuming that the data will be there when they are actually ready to receive this data. In the case of moving to a faster computer, this data is actually staying on the bus for a shorter period of time than expected and the device receives garbage data.
A similar phenomenon can occur when the device is the talker where is violates the proper 3-wire handshake.
Note that not all failures are intential on the side of the device, it could be a legitimate bug.
Now that I have given a somewhat long-winded description of how problems like this can manifest, I can give you a few recommendations.
1) Obtain a GPIB bus analyzer and examine the handshake sequence to determine where the failure is.
2) Talk to the equipment manufacturer to see if they have any updates
3) Modify the bus timing in NI-488.2 from 500ns to 2ms. This is not likely to work since you are on the receiving end.
4) Try to procure a GPIB-PCII/IIA board. This is a slower board that overall responds to handshaking slower than the AT-GPIB/TNT board and may mask the problem.
5) Increase your cable length (including to "illegal" lengths such as 8m). This can add propegation delays that can mask this problem. I have seen work in teh past with troubled instruments.

AT-GPIB/TNT AND Windows NT4 Install Problems

When I install my AT-GPIB/TNT card on a WinNT4 sp6 PC, it always fails the trouble shooting wizard. The wizard indicates a DMA conflict, but NT Diagnostics doesn't indicate any conflicts. All other available DMAs are consumed. Short of installing a PCI-GPIB card, how best can I resolve this issue. Note, GPIB communications will not work unless the GPIB card passes the trouble shooting wizard.
The odd thing is that it had worked previously...

What is the GPIB driver version that you have? I hope you have the latest GPIB driver available from http://www.ni.com/support/gpib/versions.htm.
I would recommend that you un-install the driver remove the card and follow the steps from www.ni.com/support/install. Also in the bios settings for NT the PNP option should be set to NO.

Device Manager lists AT-GPIB/TNT instead of AT-GPIB

I installed the AT-GPIB using the Atwin271 file, and then followed up with the Compatibility Release. The hardware and software diagnostics both succeed, and MAX is able to talk to the device.
In the Device Manager, though, it lists the AT-GPIB/TNT as the device in use, and it has an exclamation point indicating an error/issue with the driver. As well, the resources also list AT-GPIB/TNT and have an exclamation over the listing icon.
When I "add new hardware" and choose the GPIB device, the AT-GPIB is not listed there. AT-GPIB/TNT is, and the rest of the devices include various other GPIB products that are not similar (including STD-GPIB, etc...).
Should the AT-GPIB be listed, or is this the reason the Compati
bility Release was used? ie: one possible understanding I can come up with is that the drivers I installed for the card are in fact for the AT-GPIB/TNT, and then the addition of the Compat. Release is used to allow the drivers for the /TNT to work with the plain AT-GPIB.

From your follow-up, you have seen the http://www.ni.com/support/gpib/ win98_95cr.htm page. On that pages is a manual link: "Using Your NI-488.2 Software for DOS or Windows 3 with Windows 98/95 Manual." Follow the directions within this manual for information.
Your driver is correct. The AT-GPIB will not show up in the device manager. If you added it to the device manager (as an AT-GPIB/TNT), you may have multiple NI-488.2 drivers installed (one for 32-bit windows such as 1.7 or 2.2) and the one for Windows 3.x (2.7.1). I highly recommend uninstalling the 32-bit version if it is installed (should be able to do this through add/remove programs).
If you have specific problems following the instructions, post a follow up and we can try to help.

PCI-GPIB under WIN98 DOS

I have installed a PCI-GPIB board in a Dell computer. I can communcite withmy CDS rack from the DOS version of the "Interactive Control", IBIC. In my qb4.5 DOS program, I can find GPIB0 without any errors. However, the data returned in the second parameter for ibfind does not appear to be correct. When I try to clear the RQS, I get a 10 second timeout. It appears that I can not communicate with my devices. NI-488.2 for DOS is enabled. Thanks for any help you can give me.

By saying that you are using the DOS version of "Interactive Control", do you mean that you are working in the DOS operating system? The PCI-GPIB board cannot be used in the DOS operating system. Enabling DOS Support allows you to run DOS programs in the Windows MSDOS prompt. If you need to work in the DOS operating system, you can use the AT-GPIB/TNT board with driver version 2.7.2.

Lightroom 4.2 Installation Issue

Leaving this around in case anyone else has the same problem -- Solution found -- Windows installer issues / registry issues -- used the Microsoft Fix it tool (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2438651#reso3) to correct. 4.2 install ran fine.
I've read through the posts in the Lightroom forum regarding LR 4.2 install issues. I will list here the things I've done to try to get the install to work:
1) Downloaded the installation software twice.
2) Ran the setup program in admin user mode.
3) Ran the install in admin user mode.
4) Get the following error in a Windows Installer window:
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click ok to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'Adobe_Lightroom_x64.msi' in the box below.
Use source:
c:\Users\RMJF\AppData\Local\Temp\{...}
What I have found (after displaying hidden AppData folder):
The location where the .msi file resides is different from the one defaulting in the above window.
I select this alternate path, but still cannot complete the installation.
Furthermore, when I cancel the install, I get this error:

I have been running LR since the beginning of time and most recently LR 4.1, so there is no 4.2 installed.
Also, I tried to fix the install of 4.1 via the programs in Control Panel. I cannot repair it and get this error:
The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it.
All versions (except the 1.0 version) were downloaded and installed from the Adobe LR site.
So, looking for suggestions.
Seems like there are some missing files from the 4.1 version that are hindering the install of 4.2???
All quite frustrating. Hope you can get me to a speedy solution.
(System info: Windows Vista 64-bit Home, SP 2, 20 GB of disk space to spare! Also, I have set the install program to be allowed by the anti-virus program. I have run a registry clean-up, as well. No other apps are running during the install.)

Installation issue on opensuse 11

Hey All, Im a Windows guy still struggling with Linux set-upsso take it easy on me! :) and Im having a hard time getting blaze installed and running. This is what Ive done so far. I've successfully set-up the latest copy of openSuse11 64 bit version with: Tomcat 6.0.16 (Tested and running) ANT 1.7 JAVA SDK & JDK 6 Junit (ant-junit, junit, junit-javadoc, junit-manual, libcppunit-1_12-0) Downloaded both blazeds.war and blazeds_src_3-0-0-544.zip From Tomcat Manager I uploaded the blazeds.war file successfully. I unzipped the zip file into root/blazeds and from a command prompt ran ant. These are the errors Im getting: * [taskdef] Could no load definitions from resource net/sf/antcontrib/antcontrib.properties. It could not be found. Forms 10g Installation issue on windows 7 Professional service pack 1

I am trying to install oracle forms 10g 64 bit windows 7 Professional service pack 1 ..
Below are 2 files that i am using ..
ds_windows_x86_101202_disk1.zip (626,122,752 bytes)

But it failed but the error is ..

Christian is right - Forms 10g R2 (version 10.1.2.0.2) is not certified for installation on Windows 7. You must apply a Forms 10g R2 patch to bring the version to 10.1.2.3.0 for it to be certified. You must have a My Oracle Support account to obtain the patch.
Now, to your question - is there a workaround; the answer is yes. There are known issues with this installer. I'll list them and their workaround.
1. The Oracle installer checks for a specific set of Windows versions rather than check for a minimum Windows version.
Workaround: Right-click the Installer and select Properties. Click the Compatibility tab and click the checkbox: Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP SP3).
2. The Oracle Installer can't detect Windows Managed Virtual Memory (VM).
Workaround: You must temporarily change the Virtual Memory settings and specify specific Initial and Maximum sizes. See this Microsoft article for more information on changing VM settings. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/change-the-size-of-virtual-memory
This change will require you to restart your computer. After you have successfully installed Oracle Forms 10g, you can restore the original VM settings.
3. The Oracle installer MUST be installed as an "Administrator".
Workaround: Windows 7 uses "Least privileged user" so you must right-click the Installer and select the Compatibility tab. Click the "Run this program as an administrator" checkbox.
4. Not a Oracle installer issue, but you will have to install the 32-bit version of the Oracle Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (1.6.0 - not 1.7.0) because Oracle Forms is a 32-bit application so it will not be able to use the 64-bit JRE.
Run the Oracle installer and it should now install succesfully.

HP Photosmart D7360 -- Driver/Installation issue

For some reason my HP Pavillion Laptop no longer recognizes my HP Photosmart printer. I have downloaded the drivers, I have the disk and no matter what I do, I can't get the printer driver to install.
It tells me that it can load verythign BUT the driver. Any ideas?

NWDS installation issue - "Please wait... completing the install"

Hi all,
I got the same "Problem" each time I update my NWDS.

After the installation, when I start the NWDS I get always the message:
"Please wait... completing the install"
If I create a new Workspace this really solves the problem but I don't like to create every time a new workspace after an update and copy all my projects back to this new workspace.
Is there no other solution around? I think I'm not the only one who has this troubles, am I?

I solved this problem by myself. So for everyone who is interested in how to solve this problem:
Just delete the folder .config in
\workspace\.metadata\
During the next start of NWDS this folder will be created and everything will work as excpected!
