GPIB-USB-A malfunction after connection to old instrument

I connected a Solartron 1286 potentiostat (made in mid-80's) to my GPIB-USB-A interface, and it seems to have damaged my interface. I can install the GPIB-USB-A just fine, but when I try to search for instruments, the search time seems infinite. Are there warnings issued about the USB-A model regarding connecting to older instruments? Has anybody encountered this behavior before?

There is no known issues with GPIB-USB-A with your particular instrument and I know people have uses this USB-GPIB interface with older instruments without a problem.
It does not seem like there is a problem with interface if you could install the driver fine. You can use NI-SPY to take a SPY capture when "Scanning for instrument", this should give you more info on what was wrong. Also make sure your instrument is still functioning correctly; install the latest NI4882 driver (ver 2.3); and try to connect the instrument with a different cable, etc.

  • How do I change device name after connecting to old machine?

That's right, I've gone ahead and connected my new power book to my old dual G5 in order to get the information onto the new machine.
Now, my new machine has my Dual G5 name as it's device name.
How can I change this so my power book has the correct name?

I wish that was it, but that only changes the name of the "Hard Drive", not the actual device name.
In other words, when browsing the network there's 2 computers with same name.
    Any other suggestions?

  • Obsolete GPIB-USB-A problem again

Hi , all, sorry to bother you but I really do not know how to deal with this,
I have a obsolete GPIB-USB-A cable to connect with an instrument,
this morning I installed NI488.2 V2.2 on WinXP,  it works,  the instrument responds to my commands.
This afternoon I installed labview 2012, then the GPIB explorer is reporting error,
I can no more communicate with the instrument!
I think there might be some newer versions automatically included in LV2012, which might not be suitable for the obsolete GPIB-USB-A,
so I re install NI488.2 V2.2, it is still reporting error.
I checked the VISA version is 3.0.1,
What is the problem? Is that VISA version not compatible with LV2012?

    Hi Julia2013,
Based on this chart: http://www.ni.com/white-paper/5326/en/, GPIB_USB_A is compatible with NI 488.2 Ver 2.2. However, based on this link: http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/2BFCEE471BECB95F862574020059117E, NI 488.2 Ver 2.2 is compatible with LabVIEW 6.1, 7.0 and 7.1. Therefore, to begin with, I believe that the NI 488.2 Ver 2.2 is not compatible with LabVIEW 2012
Based on this link: http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/CF4279A34F855AB186257B1F00003B82, you'll notice that NI VISA 5.2, 5.3 and 5.4 are the only VISA versions that are compatible with LabVIEW 2012.
Therefore in summary, GPIB-USB-A is not compatible with LabVIEW 2012. Based on the first link I have mentioned, GPIB-USB-B and GPIB-USB-HS
uses NI 488.2 Ver. 3.1.1 which is compatible with the LabVIEW 2012 and thus is compatible with the VISA ver 5.2, 5.3 and 5.4.
    Hope it answers your enquiry.
    Warmest regards,

  • What kind of changes I have to do when I move from GPIB Controller to GPIB-USB Controller.

I want to know some information about GPIB-USB Controller. We are using National Instruments GPIB Controller to read and write data in a Instrument called Diagnostic Readout Box(DRB III) which will hook up with the Engine controller of the car. Now we plug-in the GPIB card in to the I/O slots of the Computer. Now, we want to use GPIB-USB Controller instead of GPIB Controller because of its portability and other features. However, we have developed some C++ applications which are available in the form of DLLs that will interact with the DRB III. Do we have to do any modifications in the coding of these applications when we move into the GPIB-USB controller?.

Once the GPIB-USB is configured, it behaves exactly like a PCI-GPIB board so you should not have to change your program. The GPIB-USB is only supported on Windows 95 and 98. If you are planning on using the GPIB-USB on 95\98 you would still use driver version 1.6 or 1.7. If you need to work on Windows Me or 2000, then you will need the GPIB-USB-A and driver version 1.0. The GPIB-USB is not supported on NT.
The USB-A driver does not allow you to use GPIB device templates. This issue is covered in Knowledge Base 266CNP00 (see link below).

  • Can I use a USB hub to connect to multiple USB ports from one GPIB-USB-HS?

I have one instrument which has a GPIB-USB-HS connected and the USB cable is connected to a USB hub. Can I have multiple PCs to connect using USB hub at their respective USB ports? If so, how many PCs can I connect using the USB cable?
I have downloaded the latest NI-VISA from the website.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You would first need a hub that allows you to switch between multiple pc's and then only one pc at a time would be connected and in control.
When you buy this special type of hub, one of the specs is how many pc connections it has.

  • Red light after connecting usb cable each time

My ipod shuffle (4th gen) is weird and would not start. I know it's because someday I plugged out the usb cable right after I perform the sync task and forget to press the reject button first.
Now the symtons is: It won't start / recharge, and it even doesn't show any light. Each time I connect it to the PC or AC adaptor, it will show RED light in about 5 seconds, and after few seconds there will be no light and it just dies.
How can I fixed my poor faily new shuffle?

    Hey exkaede,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities! I'd go ahead and try restoring your iPod shuffle to factory settings, so the software will be restored to its original factory condition with updates:

My ipod ejects itself, immediately after connecting with usb cable, before synchronizing could start. What’s wrong?

Have you tried plugging the iPod in with a different USB sync cable to verify the issue is not with the cable?  It might not also hurt to connect it to another USB port as well.
Otherwise, try manually placing the iPod into Disk Mode and then connecting it to your PC.

  • Can't see boards in a VXI chassis connected via VXI-MXI-2 cards using a GPIB-USB adapter

I'm working on a system that has two VXI enclosures, and the two are bridged via VXI-MXI-2 boards in each of them.  The first one has a GPIB-VXI board in slot 0, and I have a Winodows XP computer connected to that with a GPIB-USB-HS adapter.  The problem is that I cannot see any of the boards in the second chassis over GPIB in the Measurement & Automation Explorer.  As far as I can tell, everything is configured correctly; the VXI-MXI-2 board in the first chassis is in the last slot and has a logical address of 126, and the VXI-MXI-2 board in the second chassis is in slot 0 and has a logical address of 127.  To make things even more confusing, if I put a VXI PC in slot 0 of the first chassis, it seems to see everything without any problems.  Do you have any idea why this might be happening?  I'm pretty new to working with these systems, so I might be missing something obvious.  Thanks in advance.

Nevermind that -- I just discovered that you can't bridge two VXI chassis with VXI-MXI-2 boards if you're using a GPIB-VXI board as the controller.  So, I'll just have to find another way to accomplish what I need to do.

  • Problems after connecting USB 1.1 devices to an unpowered USB hub

After connecting a mouse, usb stick and an external hardrive to an unpowered USB 2.0 hub, I now get no response from any of those devices, though they had been working fine before. Other devices that I have since plugged into that same usb slot work just fine. What could possibly have happened??? I appreciate any insight!

    Nance,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
You did not mention if each one of these devices still works when plugged directly into the USB 1.1 port. If they do, then I cannot explain the problem. If they do not, it is possible the USB 1.1 port was overloaded with all three devices connected to the unpowered USB 2.0 hub. You may have gotten such a warning on the screen.
If you have not done so, I would disconnect all devices, shut down the powerbook, then reset the PRAM.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
Now test each device by connecting directly to the USB 1.1 port.
If both the USB stick and USB HD (I am assuming that you have an unpowered 2.5" HD) were mounted on the computer's desktop when this 'possible' power shortfall occurred, it could have corrupted both devices so they will not longer mount properly. Connect each device to the USB 1.1 port, then see if Disk Utility can see the device and repair any damage. The mouse may no longer work if the preferences or other software was corrupted.
If you are running an unpowered HD, I would recommend a powered USB 2.0 hub so you can connect other devices without worry.

  • Lose connection to external USB hard drive after waking up from sleep

My Mac lost connection to the external USB hard drive after waking up from sleep. I can still see the folders in the hard drive in Finders, but when I double clip a folder no file within the folder is displayed. I have to reconnect the hard drive with iMac to read its contents.
May I ask how this happens and is there a solution?
I'm using Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X to read from and write to NTFS format of USB external hard drive.
    Thanks!

... I un-ticked the "put hard disks to sleep when possible" option in the Energy Saver panel in the System Preferences, and it seems the problem is solved. will have to sleep and wake up my iMac to further verify if this is the solution ...
Alternative advices are always greatly appreciated!

  • Use GPIB-USB-HS in place of HP Comm Card (82335)?

Recently had one of my engineers use an old computer, and found it is having hard drive issues.  I got the old PC back up and running, but I think that this is a good time to try and upgrade the hardware/software.
    Old Computer:
    Running Windows 95
Using a HP Communications Card (GPIB) model 82335A
The HP card then connects to a HP 8751A Network Analyzer
This runs software called HP Instrument Basic (iBasic), and has several tests saved
New Computer that I want to upgrade
Basic Desktop PC running Windows 7 32 bit
I have a NI - GPIB-USB-HS cord, from a different testing machine, that I want to use to connect to the same analyzer
With the new computer and the NI cord, I can run the iBasic software, and the test loads, but errors when it runs.
In the code it gives the error message on the line that says "ON TIMEOUT Scode,3" then GOTO the LINE that prints the error
I have installed the drivers for the NI GPIB cord, and even tried installing/testing the Agilent library Suite.
I'm looking for any ideas that someone may have to point me in the right direction, since I am currently stuck.
    Thanks

You really need to be talking to agilent about a GPIB controller (please don't call it a chord) to find one of their devices that is compatible with your old software. Agilent and NI GPIB functions are not compatible at the low level. You would be able to swap only if the code used the portable VISA functions.
