GPM Shortcut Windows Server 2008

When I RDP to my server as administrator I have a shortcut on the desktop for Group Policy Management. When I double click it I get an a dialogue box entitled Group Policy Management Console and it reads "The specified domain controller could not be
contacted. This affects the following domain in the console.
Domain: mydomain.local
The error was:
Access is denied"
and then it gives the following options: choose a different domain controller, retry, and remove this domain from the console.
I have never seen this before and could use some expert help on the issue.
It is a virtualized Windows Server 2008 32 bit box

Hi,
As Manjunath mentioned, are you logging into member server and using RSAT to access the GPM Console remotely? Can you locate remote domain controller using the following command?
nltest /dsgetdc: <remote domain name> /force
Network Connectivity
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc961803.aspx
Please also try to collect the following information to make sure the domain/DCs are healthy:
dcdiag /v /c /d /e /s:dcname >c:\dcdiag.txt
repadmin /showrepl dc* /verbose /all /intersite >c:\repl.txt (if more then one DC exists)
dnslint /ad /s "DCipaddress" (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321045)
Hope this helps.

We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 RDS supporting many ThinClients, mostly using a mandatory profile on a Windows 2003 R2 AD environment

Hi Clarence,
Today we experienced the problem again,
Users can’t login to RDS, but now they got stucked at “"Please wait for the Group Policy client”;
System log events recorded the following errors again:
timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the Schedule service.

What path do you suggest to investigate further?

• Windows Server 2008: Add Links to Desktop

Hello,
Does anyone know if it is possible to add hyperlinks to videos or documents to client's desktops on Windows Server 2008? I am trying to use a similar functionality to Active Desktop which allows desktop wallpaper to be .html files.
Thanks

Yes, create an IE shortcut for the hyperlink and simple shortcut for the documents, with GPP it's easy with GPO. (Adding
shortcuts on desktop using Group Policy Preferences in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1) (wrote for windows 8, but the same gpo can be applyed to 2008R2)

• Windows Server 2008 R2 - No Audio Devices are installed

I have a Vm that is running windows Server 2008 R2. I says there are "No Audio Devices are installed" I have tried everything!!!
this :
Please launch Device Manager, right click on the sound card and select “Update Driver Software” to check if it can be updated via Windows Update.
everything!!!
please help!!!
I am using a VM from AWS

Quote from irfan H
The error message indicates that the Audio service is failing to start on your computer.
You can try the below methods to fix this issue:
Method 1:
Run Audio troubleshooter that will automatically diagnose and fix any audio issues. You can refer this article to run Audio troubleshooter:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Playing-Audio-troubleshooter
Method 2:
Check the services manually.
I suggest that you check if the dependency services are started and check if you have the same issue.
a. Click Start, type Services.msc in the Start Search box.
b. Scroll down the list of services, right-click Windows Audio and select Start.
c. Select Properties for Windows Audio and set its Startup Type to Automatic.
If the Windows Audio service does not start and you get the error ‘Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start, then make sure that the following services are started and their Startup Type is set to Automatic’
a. Plug and Play
b. Multimedia Class Scheduler
c. Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
Method 3:
If the dependency services are not starting, you can uninstall and reinstall the Audio drivers. This will reset all the Audio components on your computer.
To uninstall a device with Device Manager:
a. Click on start and type devmgmt.msc
b. In Device Manager's left panel, open the node that represents. You should be able to find the Audio device under the Sound, Audio and Game controller. Uninstall and then right-click the device entry.
c. On the shortcut menu, click Uninstall.
d. On the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click OK to start the uninstall process.
Once you uninstall the device, install the latest drivers by downloading it from the manufacturers’ website (Realtek).
Note:Make sure that you have the source to install the Audio drivers before you install it. Also create a System restore point before uninstalling the device.

• Winlogon Init in Windows Server 2008 R2

I had a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine that was acting slow on bootup. I have gotten it down to about 20 seconds after being at the control alt delete screen I can RDP into it. During the process of figuring out what was going on I have been running xbootmgr
and reviewing in Windows Performance Analyzer.
The one thing I notice still happening is that there are two Winlogon Inits. The one right after Session Init never ends and either does the post boot. There is another winlogon init right before explorer init that only lasts a few seconds.
How can I troubleshoot a winlogon that appears to almost never end? For example when I look at boot phases summary table for winlogon init the duration is 9223372011.172895400 and around the same amount for Post Boot?
The only thing that has changed is I had a data drive with tomcat on it that was on an iscsi drive. I created a new drive in VMware and moved the files over from there, turned the old drive offline, removed any favorites/targets and so on and turned
ISCSI to manual.

Here is part of the log. I notice in the event viewer the following details
Completed computer boot policy processing for server in 0 seconds
This server is a copy of another server that is experiencing the same issue. I am using this server as a way to troubleshoot the production server.
The two servers are on different NIC's in VMware and different VLAN's. I have installed the latest version of Symantec Enterprise Small Business Edition and uninstall/reinstalled VMware Tools. Really it is booting and I am able to access it much faster then
I use to but it still bugs me that the first winit logon just doesn't seem to stop.

• Installation problem on windows server 2008 r2 datacenter edition 64bit

hi
today, i tried to install the current maxdb 7.8 release on my virtual server with a windows server 2008 r2 datacenter 64bit edition os. at the first installation, i got an error message something with "rte runtime error". at this point, the installation stopped.
because of this error, i tried to uninstall the failed installation. this was not possible, in the uninstaller, i didn't see any components, so i can't uninstall.
so i tried to delete the files manually: the entries in the start menu, and the application's path under "program files"... first, i need to kill a process named "serv.exe", that creates a tcp daemon under port 7200... after killing it, the deletion of the dir in program files was successful.
this is very very weird, now my server is "contaminated" with an uncomplete uninstallation of maxdb...
why maxdb 7.8 has problems on windows server 2008 r2 datacenter 64bit edition???
thanks for feedbacks!
regards, jan

> no, because i canceled this virtual server - another method to solve this problem. (i have really no time for things like that..!)
If you take the time to give exact error messages then someone will be certainly able to help
> on windows server 2003, there are NO problems.
Windows 2003 != Windows 2008 - they use a different kernel, a different security system (UAC) and other features that may prevent a succesfull installation in the first place.
I installed a MaxDB 7.8 just today on Windows 2008 R2 and it worked fine.

• Unable to open Office files on SharePoint 2010 sites on Windows Server 2008 R2

Setup: Windows SharePoint Server 2010 sp1 on Windows Server 2008 R2 (hosted on VMWare VSphere ESXi 5.1)
Secured using Domain SSL from GlobalSign.
Client OS: Windows 7 Professional 32bit & Windows XP SP3 32 bit
Browsers: IE10, IE9,IE8
Office: Office 2010, Office 2010 sp2 (both 32bit), Office 2007
Problem Description: Only recently, users started having issues with opening Office files (Word, Excel) on SharePoint sites. When you click on an Office file e.g. Word Document, it comes up with the option to select "Ready only" or "Edit"
and choosing either options and re-entering the login credentials results in the
application hanging. If you leave it for a while (about 5 minutes) sometimes the file opens and other times it gives the error "Could not open https://portal.com/XXX/XXX/Document.docx". Even when it opens, it's extremely
sluggish and can't do anything other than end it via Task Manager. Same with excel files.
This happens to all the users all different OS and browsers.
On XP Pro SP3 w/ IE8, when you click on the file, the login prompt keeps popping back up repeatedly and if you click cancel, the file loads up anyway but no way of saving back onto the SharePoint site.
IMPORTANT: One exception is when logged in as a Site Collection Administrator, it
works like a dream bizarrely!!!! Opens, Edits and saves back fine on the SharePoint site.
Have tried following:
1. Repaired Office 2010 Pro; Uninstalled/Re-installed Office 2010 Pro
2. Reset Browser, unticked automatically detect proxy settings.
3. Emptied OfficeOfflineCache on Client
4. Removed WebDAV from the SharePoint server
5. Added Antivirus folder exclusion (We use SEP 11) on the SharePoint Server
Note: PDF files opens fine for all users.
I would immensely appreciate if anybody has got any advice/pointers/suggestions. Desperately out of ideas at the moment.
regards,
Compter Sez No!

Hi,
According to your description, When you try to open a Microsoft Office document from a SharePoint 2010 site in a client application, the document opens slowly and you are prompted to enter your credentials multiple times.
This issue may be because of SharePoint Web Front End (WFE) server(s) has Antivirus software installed and the exceptions are not set correctly.
I recommend to remove the antivirus software or set the correct permissions for the antivirus software to resolve the issue.
To configure the antivirus exceptions, please follow the guidelines in the below articles:
KB943620:
Folders to exclude when you perform a file-level antivirus scan on a server operating system.
KB952167:
Certain folders may have to be excluded from antivirus scanning when you use a file-level antivirus program in SharePoint.
KB943556:
Recommended file and folder exclusions for Microsoft Forefront Client Security or Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010.
Best regards.
Thanks

• Error While Creating Windows Server 2008 SP2 32-BIT Virtual Machine

I am facing an error while creating a Virtual Machine on the Cloud. The Error is below:
Error (610)
Virtual Machine Manager was unable to find a value for the required Sysprep parameter ProductKey.
Recommended Action
Add the missing Sysprep parameter either to the answer file or to the operating system configuration, and then try the operation again.
My Template does not have the Product Key defined. The OS is Windows Server 2008 SP2 32-BIT. Is defining Product Key absolutely necessary? I have other Templates for other Operating Systems and they are working fine. Only facing problem
with this.
Any help would be appreciated.

In the SCVMM world a 'template' is composed of the following: a VHD with an OS that has been generalized (sysprep), virtual hardware profile (settings), and an OS profile.
The OS profile is required to have a product key. A MAC activation key at the minimum. But the key is required.
If you deploy a VM from a VHD, the same customization assumptions are not at play. Which is why it succeeds. (there is no template in this case, there is also no requirement that the OS in the VHD be sysprep'd).
SCVMM has rules. And lots of things don't make sense until you begin to understand them and play within them. (I am not saying that the SCVMM rules are a good thing, just saying they exist)

• How to install Windows Server 2008 (dualboot) on a PC with Windows 8.1 already on it?

Hi, I bought a new PC with preinstalled Windows 8. Now I need to install Windows Server 2008. Anyone can advise me how to
do it? It has to be in dual boot, in Virtual Machine the display is way too small

You should check out the Boot-to-VHD capability.
Here is how we do it in a lab environment which we got from a Microsoft lab:
-Verify your computer is running Windows 7 or later.
-Verify you have full administrator rights to your currently installed operating system.
-Verify hard disk encryption or other pre-boot security is turned off.
-Confirm that hardware virtualization technology and memory protection are both enabled in your computer's BIOS setup.
Now we just setup the a VHD with an operating system on it (can even use a downloaded server 180 day trial VHD if you are in a rush). Then go to Disk Management and select Attach VHD and point to the file. Note the drive letter that is assigned to the
mounted VHD.
Run a command prompt as administrator and type: " bcdedit /export BCDBackup.bak " to create an exported backup of your boot loader configuration. Now type bcdboot [drive]:\windows.
Now to test your dual-boot configuration, restart your computer and select the new OS boot option.
An optional last step would be when complete to restore your boot loader by running "bcdedit /import BCDBackup.bak" and delete any VHD files.
A more detailed guide written for Windows 7 but still applies for Windows 8 can be found at:

Hope that helps.

• How to install IE8 on Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter?

Hello.
Can anybody tell me, how to install IE8 on 2008 R2 Datacenter?
I've downloaded this http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/internet-explorer-8-details.aspx for "Windows Server 2008 64-bit and more..", removed IE11, IE10, IE9 from installed updates, and runned "dism /online /disable-feature
/featurename:Internet-Explorer-Optional-amd64".
And nothing helps. I've got a message "Internet Explorer 8 is not supported on this operating system".

you can't "install" IE8 on WS2008R2, nor on Windows7 - because those OS's shipped with IE8.
IE is an OS component, and so when you "upgrade" or "downgrade" IE, you are affecting an OS component.
What this means is that the "IE8" download you are trying to apply, is actually IE8 for WinXP or maybe WinVista.
You can usually "downgrade" Win7 back to IE8, by uninstalling the newer "upgrade" of IE - this causes the OS to automatically attempt to revert to the prior IE version.
This reversion assumes/requires a healthy OS and component store (CBS), including all the pkgmgr file needed to revert to component.
Sometimes, the component store is damaged, or is missing files.
you may need to check the CBS logfiles, and may need to perform SFC /scannow
You may need to use CheckSUR to repair system health.

• OS Error in starting the OCFS Service on windows server 2008

Hi,
Installing the Oracle 11g R1 CRS on windows server 2008 operating system . It is displaying the folllowing error message
ERROR : OS in Error in starting the OCFS Service
Can any one please tell what could be the issue ..
Thank You

Solved this after some trawling through xml configuration files on the server.
The file C:\Oracle\product\11.1.0\db_1\owb\j2ee\config\http-web-site.xml contains the reference to keystore.jks:
<ssl-config keystore="*%ORACLE_HOME%*/owb/j2ee/config/keystore.jks" keystore-password="->keystoreadmin"/>
changing this to:
<ssl-config keystore="C:\Oracle\product\11.1.0\db_1/owb/j2ee/config/keystore.jks" keystore-password="->keystoreadmin"/>
and the OC4J container starts successfully.

Please help As i am running out of time as i have to upgrade TFS for that first step is to install SQL server.

Hello,
The following are a few things you can try:
Copy the media to the local disk drive, unzip it (in case you are installing from an ISO file, and run SQL Server setup from there.
Try to unregister and register the Windows Installer with the following two commands:
msiexec /unregister
msiexec /regserver
Try to use Process Monitor to log the detailed error produced when the installation of dw20sharedamd64.msi fails. You can download Process Monitor from the following link:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645
Share with us the error captured by Process Monitor.
Hope this helps.
