GPP Drive map and logon impact

Hello,
GPP drive mapping requires synchronous processing which cause slower logon time. But it seems after reading this article here http://blogs.technet.com/b/grouppolicy/archive/2013/05/23/group-policy-and-logon-impact.aspx  that if you
don't modify the GPP drive mapping after it has been applied, for every other logon, policies will be process asynchronously resulting faster logon. This is not what I experiment, even if I don't modify the GPP, every two logon, policies are
process synchronously
Here another way to improve logon time when using GPP drive map :
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/12221.troubleshooting-the-drive-maps-preference-extension-in-group-policy-replace-mode-only-maps-the-drive-every-other-logon.aspx?wa=wsignin1.0
... The reconnect option is the same as mapping a drive using the /PERSISTENT attribute. This allows the state of the mapped drive to be saved between user logon sessions.  In this solution, use Create action to map a drive that persists between user
logons. This would allow for faster logons because
Group Policy wouldn’t be forced to run synchronously every logon cycle.
Same here, even if I set the persistence attribute, every two logon, policies are processed synchronously.
Are those both articles given wrong information or do I miss something?
Thank you for your help.
Chris

This article is misleading in terms of foreground/background/sync/async.
I tend to say we have two processing modes only: sync and async. sync
can only occur at startup/logon, and it only occurs if several other
conditions are met (these conditions are correct in the above blog
post). sync in my terms is identical to foreground, and async is
identical to background :)
So the question still is: Do you have any policy settings in place that
might force the next processing to be sync?

  • Create GPP drive mapping entries programmatically

Can anyone provide any sample codes that creates drive mapping entries in group policy preference? I am not looking for script to create the GPO, I am looking for codes to create mapping entries inside it instead. I've been searching for MS document
    but found nothing so far.
Specifically I am looking for codes that can create entries using item level targeting criteria as below:
    - OS type
    - session type (RDP vs local console)
    - user group membership
    Any pointer is appreciated.

    Also you can use.
    $Network = New-Object -ComObject "Wscript.Network"
    $Network.MapNetworkDrive("P:", "\\MyComputer\MyShare")
    or

  • NAS200 loses User Listing - prevents network drive mapping and display of shares

I haven't seen this posted -  my NAS200 has been bullet proof Since Dec 2007 when I got it -  has the latest firmware, but lately I lose the drive mapping to thios unit - I cn open the admin console and login but when displaying the user list, I see Error: Cannot find number of users. I al;so see no shares as defined. I have recycled and get this to work for a while but it eventiually (10 min to 2 hours) loses connectivity. I'vwe enabled and disabled guest accounts and other features in options. Anyone have any ideas? Is this syptomatic of a firmware issue or other problem. The disconnect is now very  consistent but just started in the last few days.

Since no one sems to have any responses - I'll report that I've reset this device many times - it always works for a while then exhibits this behavior - I can access the unit via web and it shows 'error - no users defined' -  share mapping reports similar issue 'no users defined'. This seems to be a result of the firmware 'losing' its user information, causing the drive to disconnect (even using the 'admin' user). I thnik it might be due to a heat problem - after it runs for a while it heats up -  the top drive noticably more than the lower drive. My problem was using Raid 0 so I need the drives right where they are. So far over two weeks I've transfered quite a bit of data using a sync tools to minimize duplicaitions and recopying files. This is slow but I've made progress. I let the drives cool overnight for example last night, restarted this morning, copied 4000 plus file (about half of one directory), and using logging can see that it then failed to find the share/files  at the halfway point, so its off for the moment. Resets, etc don't help. I've had this since 2007 so its out of warranty but I'm still guessing one of the drives is going bad or the unit is heating on its own and the heat contributes to the firmware failure .... any input Junior Specialists?

  • ADUC home drive disconnected when using GPP drive mappings

    Hello,
We have an issue with mapping home drives and using group policy preferences to map all other drives for our users.
We have users in multiple locations and each location has it's own storage, users in a location have their home drives on that location's storage. We assign the home drive to a user using the profile tab in the ADUC user account settings (\\storage\users$\%username%).
All other drive mappings are made through group policy preferences. This is working as expected in Windows XP.
We are preparing for a migration to Windows 7 and Windows 7 deals with this situation in a bit different manner, for some reason when you log on to Windows 7 the ADUC account settings are made first (thus connecting the home drive) and after this the group
policies are applied and prior to the first drive mapping being made all connected drives (and with this the home drive) are disconnected and then the drive mappings are applied. This behaviour occurs with replace mode as well as with update mode.
To work around this the home drives could be mapped using GPP but since we have users with home drives in multiple locations and drive mappings in GPP's do not understand the %HOMESHARE%%HOMEPATH% syntax we have to use a drive mapping per location and for
each drive mapping use item level targeting and put the users into the appropriate security group and this is more administrative burden then we'd like. Dividing users into OU's per location is not really a workable option as well.
Has anyone seen this issue before and/or has some ideas on how to deal with this or has a workable workaround/solution ?

Thank you for the reply. I have seen the article you linked to, from that I tested and found that in our situation we experience the same behaviour.
The home drive is connected to P through the AD user account profile tab, the other drive mappings are gpp drive maps and are starting from G on and are set to replace, use first available, run in logged-on user's security context, remove this item when
it is no longer applied and item level targeting is set to a security group, we have 20+ drive mappings using these settings. I have tested with setting the mapping to Update but the results are the same.
I am able to connect to the home drive manually using a UNC mapping. When I test using F for the home drive in AD user account profile tab the problem is gone. Changing the home drive letter is not an option though because we have several applications that
    rely on that letter P.

  • Best Way To Change Drive Mapping

We have an L: Drive which currently points to
    \\server1\library
We're moving that library to server2. The problem is that not everyone is mapped to L: because only a certain amount of people need it. Here's the issue....we don't know who has that mapping currently. How can we find out who has that mapping so that we
can alter their logon script to point to the new location? I want to avoid having to disconnect the old drive mapping, and connect to the new on a PC by PC basis.

    Hi,
consider having your loginscript to enumerate the connected mapping, and if a certain mapping is found, remove and reconnect it. something like:
    StrOldpath= "\\server1\library"
    StrnewPath= "\\server2\library"
    StrNewLetter= "V:"
    BlnPersistent= true
    On error resume next
    Set WshNetwork = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Network")
    Set oDrives = WshNetwork.EnumNetworkDrives
    WScript.Echo "Network drive mappings:"
    For i = 0 to oDrives.Count - 1 Step 2
    ' WScript.Echo "Drive " & oDrives.Item(i) & " = " & oDrives.Item(i+1)
    if instr(1,oDrives.Item(i+1),StrOldpath,1)>0 then
    wscript.echo "ok"
    wshnetwork.RemoveNetworkDrive oDrives.Item(i), True, True
    wshnetwork.MapNetworkDrive StrNewLetter, StrnewPath, BlnPersistent
    end if
    Next

  • GPP - Missing Mapped Drives

Domain Functional Level: Windows Server 2003
Domain Controllers: Windows Server 2012 R2
    Workstations: Windows 7 PRO, x86
I'm mapping network shares for my users using GPP, running under User Logon, and Item Level Targeting.  The missing network drives are Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 file servers.  The network drives that DO map are Windows Server 2012 R2 file servers.
When I log in as a test user (copied from an offending user), I can browse to the 2003 shares via UNC, and I am capable of manually mapping the drives are well.  However, when I log off and log back in, the drives are missing again
for the 2003 shares.  Furthermore, I'm mapping user's home folders via Profile tab in their user accounts, and that's going to the same 2003 share as well.  That isn't mapping either.
I believe that it was working fine last week, but then SOMETHING must have changed.  I'm unsure of what though.   Perhaps someone can shed some light into this?

Not to my knowledge - they SHOULD be present again without gpupdate. The
log I mentioned above might be helpful.

  • Creating a new folder and drive map with Preferences

So I am trying to set things up using GPP so that users of a particular security group get a U:\ drive at the following location:
    \\server\share\%username%
I have set up the drive map preference & also a folders preference (to create the user's folder).  The problem is that it works BACKWARDS and the drive tries to map prior to folder creation and thus fails, THEN the folder gets created.  So
that the 2nd time the user logs in they actually get the U:\ drive at the correct location.  The goal is to have the folder created and mapped to on the 1st try for the user.
How can I get this working WITHOUT resorting to scripts, folder redirection, or manually setting the U drive on the AD Profile?  I just want that folder to be created for only users in the proper security group, and then have the drive map
    to it.
    # When I wrote this script only God and I knew what I was doing. # Now, only God Knows!

You cannot. The execution order of GPO parts (called Client Side
Extensions) cannot be changed, so you're stuck with this error if you
    don't resort to a script :)

  • Drive Map GPO and Item-Level targeting using DNS Computer Name not working as expected

I've run into a snag trying to move from logon script based drive mappings, to a GPO based Drive map solution and I'm hoping somebody can shed some light on the problem that I am seeing.  We started down the GPO based drive mappings because we have
a handful of Windows 8 client computers which don't run the logon script based drive mappings.
I put together a basic Drive Maps GPO.   I'm mapping 3 drives, I've linked the GPO to a computer container OU for testing and everything is working just fine.  I have 3 different Windows 8 client PC, all domain joined, and all 3 run the GPO as
    expected.
The problem is when I attempt to apply Item-level targeting.   I've found that if I define item-level targeting to use the NetBIOS name of the computer, I can either apply the GPO at an individual computer level, or I can exclude the GPO for that individual
computer by toggling between IS and IS NOT.   However, when I choose to define the computer name by choosing the DNS option, the GPO does not apply as expected.
So, if I say "the DNS computer name is example1.mydomain.com" and I apply the GPO, it applies to example1, example2 and example3.   And if I instead say, "the DNS computer name is not example1.mydomain.com", then it doesn't apply
to example1, example2 or example3.     Obviously, I would expect it to apply or not apply only to example1.mydomain.com.
If instead, I say "the NetBIOS computer name is example1", and apply the GPO, then example1 gets it, and example2 and example3 do not.   If I say, "the netBIOS name is not example 1", then example1 does NOT get the drive mapping,
but example 2 and example3 do.   < This is exactly what I want and I can continue to just use NetBIOS names...but I don't understand why DNS isn't working in the same manner.
My clients are all using DHCP and using domain controllers for DNS.   All 3 machines are in the mydomain.com namespace.  The mydomain.com namespace is an active directory integrated zone.   We have reverse zones in place for the dns records.
I can ping the machines from the DC's as well as the machines themselves.  I can run nslookup and resolve the computer name for each host using the FQDN.  I can also run a ping -a IP_ADDY and get the FQDN back.  The DC's themselves are
running Server 2008 R2.   I honestly don't see any issues from a name resolution standpoint on the network itself.
So, any suggestions as to why defining the shortened NetBIOS name works just fine, but using DNS with a FQDN does not?   (I've tried the DNS name using just the name, the name., as well as name.mydomain.com and name.mydomain.com.)

    And here is the result from a Windows 7 host,  which is named d2-7-user1...thus it should map the T drive and in fact does;

  • Nokia Map and Drive+ Beta on Lumina 920 Feedback

So I took my new phone down to MD/DC area in the last few days and here are a few things that I would like to post as my feedback on what would be nice to have, fixes, etc.  [I used both my new Lumia 920 and my wife's Samsung Galaxy Note 2 as comparsion).
    1. Highest priority for me is that the routes from Here.net need to be able to sync down to the phone.  Nothing more is more important then this because when you have a custom route that you want to use (for example, to route around high traffic or potential high traffic areas).
    2. Extremely disappointed that a new road in MD (MD 200) was not used by the Drive+ and didn't even show up on the map on my Lumia 920 while it was used and did show up on Google map.  This road is a toll road and is over a year old already.  [And yes, I have enabled toll road in the navigation as well as selected 'faster route' as the routing to use under smart routing].  I cannot stressed how disappointed I am to not see Nokia Map have this route at all.
    3. Allow route changes on the Nokia Drive+ app.  As good as pre-planned trip and using Here.net, there are just tmes that it's much better to allow us to change the route based on latest condition.
    4. Never once did I see ANY traffic updates at all on both the Map and Drive+ Beta.  When it does shows on my wife's Google's Map/Navigation.
    5. I love that under Drive+, it tells you which lane to get into ahead of when you need to make a turn or merge onto another way. However, the flip side of that is that there's no way to know which road you're currently on.  This is probably more important for when you're in an area with a lot of highway/local way intersections.  Also, it would be great if it also will display the next major 'road' that you will be getting onto.
So far I'm happy with some of the functionality and disappointed in some of Nokia Map and Drive+ and I have about a week left to decide to either stay with WP9 and Nokia or do I want to switch back to Android and Google Map.

    hi there,

  • Active Directory Integration and Drive mapping

We currently have a lab with 20 Mac Pro machines, and an Xserve.. all running 10.5+. We are looking at integrating the existing users, through AD, into the Xserve. We have been able to do simple authentication and drive mapping to the windows share easily enough. However what we would like to be able to do is mount a share from the Xserve for only the Macs for the students that will be in there, while keeping the Home directory from AD intact and still being mounted.
Is that possible or I am going outside of what I am able to do?
    Thank you

If I understand what you are asking, then you will need to bind the Xserve to AD, then promote it to an OD master. This will allow you to manage the AD groups without schema modification to AD, basically allowing the storage of Apple MCX attributes. You can then create a group in OD and add the AD group to it. Then, manage the OD group and set login preferences to automount a share. Check the box to allow unique user credentials to be sent. Since you are in a Kerberos/Single sign on environment, you will be able to pull this off very easily.
During the workstation bind, make sure the UNC home path option is select and that you are choosing the correct protocol (SMB or AFP). That will allow the AD defined windows home folder to mount. Then follow the OD MCX stuff above to handle the mount of the share. You might also want to look into augmented records if you need to get management to the user level. I've had no need for this yet so I've not used it. Manage by nest AD group has always been enough because everyone gets the same stuff.
    Hope this helps

  • "Favorites" in Maps and Drive+

Using Nokia 920: As if it is not bad enough that Maps and Drive+ are two separate apps, even though they are sharing the same map files (thank God!), I am wondering why they are also not sharing the same set of Favorites? If I have added a favorite to Drive+ since I drive there frequently, and then find myself needing to take public transportation or walk to the same place, why do I need to search & find that place AGAIN in Maps?? And, vice versa: If I added a favorite in Maps, why can I not use it directly in Drive+ as opposed to using Maps to get directions and have it dump me into Drive+? Just convoluted user interface...
Using Nokia 920 running on Windows Phone 8

I have the same question. It's CRAZY that Favorite places and Collections aren't shared between these two apps. (In fact, it's also not clear why they're not combined into a single app.)

  • HERE maps and HERE drive for Universal app

    Hi All,
Is Here Launcher supported in Win RT apps?
Our requirement is to show the following in the map both in phone as well as in tablet
    1. user's location on the map with lat/long
    2. multiple locations on the map with (lat/long collection)
    3. directions on the map with (source lat/long, dest lat/long)
    4. live traffic updates
    5. show different types of pushpins on the map with (lat/long collection)
Right now I'm launching HERE maps and drive in phone using uri scheme, but it is not supporting point no. 2 and 5.
In Phone, is there any other way to launch HERE maps/drive other than uri scheme?
I'm not able to find HERE drive in windows store, is it not available yet?
In Phone, is it possible to go the HERE maps directly without hitting HERE splash screen? I know we are launching another application so we dont have control over splash screen, but is there any way to accomplish this?
    Regards, Sivaraman

    Hi Sivaraman,
    >>Is Here Launcher supported in Win RT apps?
    Based on the official
HERE Launchers API document, it looks like Here Launcher is not supported in Store app.
    >>In Phone, is there any other way to launch HERE maps/drive other than uri scheme?
As far as I know, HERE Launchers API and Uri Schemes are the only way.
    Quote from:
    http://developer.nokia.com/resources/library/Lumia/change-history/archived-content/maps-and-navigation/here-launchers.html
The services provided by the HERE applications can be used in two ways:
1.By utilising the HERE Launchers API provided, or
2.by utilising the Uri Schemes implemented in HERE applications.

    >>I'm not able to find HERE drive in windows store, is it not available yet?
Yes, I can only see Here Maps in Windows Store now, so I think it is not available yet.
    >>In Phone, is it possible to go the HERE maps directly without hitting HERE splash screen?
I don't find any explanations to talk about this in the above API documents, so I think it's not possible yet using official way.

  • Group Policy error 1112 - Drive Maps

    Hi everyone
We are getting hundreds of these alerts from SCOM every day from multiple 2008 R2 terminal servers:
    Alert from Operations Manager 2007:
Alert description: The Group Policy Client Side Extension Group Policy Drive Maps was unable to apply one or more settings because the changes must be processed before system startup or user logon. The system will wait for Group Policy processing to finish
completely before the next startup or logon for this user, and this may result in slow startup and boot performance.

    Description:
The Group Policy Client Side Extension Group Policy Drive Maps was unable to apply one or more settings because the changes must be processed before system startup or user logon. The system will wait for Group Policy processing to finish completely before the
next startup or logon for this user, and this may result in slow startup and boot performance.

However it each case the user still gets their drive mapping!
I've this only occurs with Drive Map GP Preference -I've even taken a user out of all policies except for a new test drive map policy and they still get this error. I've applied the hotfix that should be the latest version of the GP dll's (KB2622802) but
the error remains. I've tried all options within the GPP for Drive Maps - Update, Replace etc,
Should I just override the OpsMgr alerts? It seems like this is a bug with 2008 server and GP Drive Map Preferences?
    Any ideas would be appreciated
    Thanks
    Rik

I must admit that I never used Drive Maps on a Server (-: Maybe this is
a bug in the Drive Maps CSE... If it bothers: Set NoBackgroundPolicy
    (REG_DWORD) to 1 in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows
    NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\GPExtensions\
{5794DAFD-BE60-433f-88A2-1A31939AC01F}. This will prevent the Drive Maps
CSE from being invoked during background GP updates.
     sincerely, martin

  • Error code 0x80070035 on drive maps in GPO, "Network path cannot be found".

I am trying to apply a GPO that maps drives so that another GPO can then make them available offline for a couple of hundred users.
Every time I try to apply the policy it fails with an 0x80070035 error which translates as a "Network Path cannot be found". The security settings for that particular folder is fine and the user can see it ok, furthermore following logon I can
manually map the drive through windows explorer and through CMD/powershell using the net use command.
The path i tried was \\servername\otherdir\securearea\ which didnt work (i did drop and add the final "\" just in case i was going mad)
    i then tried \\servername\otherdir\unsecurearea\ which
    still failed
just to prove my lack of sanity i created a folder on the hard drive of the laptop itself, made it a shared folder and tried both \\localhost\sharedfolder and \\127.0.0.1\sharedfolder,
they all fail with the same error code.
i have checked the hosts and the lmhosts files are there is nothing new in there, only the usual MS gumf that has come with every copy on windows since Win95
patience is wearing thin, hair is getting short ...
    thoughts anyone?
Nothing is unfixable - with a suitable sized hammer!

    Hi klimacher,
Would you please let me know the current situation of this issue? Have you referred to Kelly's suggestion and solved this issue?
Based on your description, I understand that you configure Drive Maps via GPP. However, can’t apply the policy
with error code 0x80070035. If anything I misunderstand, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
If so, you should find Event 4098 as below shows.
When you type the location of this mapped drive, please remove trailing slash on the UNC path. Then apply the
setting and run gpupdate command to update group policy setting. Please monitor the result.
In addition, please refer to the following article and troubleshoot this issue.
    Troubleshooting
the Drive Maps Preference Extension in Group Policy: Adding a Share Name with Trailing Slash '\' Returns Error Code 0x80070035
If this issue still exists, please let me know summarily how you configure the Drive Maps. For an example,
where the GPO link? Did link to user OU? Any update, please feel free to let us know.
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,
    Justin Gu
