GPRS data coverage, switching?

Hey everyone.
My company currently uses Motorola V551's for communications in the field, mainly because we can use the GPRS systems for data in remote locations. (Teathered to a G4 laptop via Bluetooth). Although the data is slow at times, we can get a simple web page to load. Since we often need data communications for emergency situations and services, it's important that we find out how the GPRS signals and services are working on everyones iPhone.
Does the iPhone automatically switch from 3G to Edge to GPRS on it's own when using it for data? Does it show what type of service its connected to, in a window, like the older mobile phones? In other words, does anyone know for sure it's doing so in remote areas outside the normal data 3G/Edge ranges? I should note that I'm not looking to use the iPhone connection teathered to my laptop... I'm not even sure that works, but more so, receiving the Internet on the iPhone alone.
Any issues when using it for GPRS data?
These are very important questions and I really appreciate the help.
Thanks kindly:
Warren

In addition to the first poster, yes the iPHone will automatically switch between Edge and GPRS. While Edge isn't the fastest around, GPRS is slower. You can tell from the front of the phone which service you are on. In Edge, there is a blue square with an E in it, with GPRS it will just be a blue box. To add to what you said about teathering, the iPhone will not support teathering at this time, even with bluetooth.
Hope this answers your question.

  • Why does my Verizon iPhone 4S Data Service Switch from 3G to 2G as soon as I want to use it for "data-intensive" apps such as Netflix?

    I have an iPhone 4S that I purchased new from Verizon back in January 2012.  I've started to notice that the 3G data coverage appears and disappears according to whether or not I'm actually using the data.  For instance: When the phone is stationary and not using the data, it indicates that I have 3G data coverage.  When I click on an app like Netflix (without moving the phone from it's stationary position), data coverage either immediately or soon thereafter switches to a 2G data coverage connection (indicated with an "o" for Verizon).  Has anyone else had this same problem?  I can't say that this happens everywhere, but in particular, it happens at my work every single time I would like to be able to watch episodes of tv shows on my lunch break.

    Yeah I'll need to call and ask because it's very possible that the tower is "congested" as I work in a large city.  Hardly seems fair that I would get a diminished data speeds due to congestion of a large city that Verizon indicates it has full coverage on all of their "data coverage" maps.  I may have made a different carrier choice had I known that this was going to happen.  I wonder if this happens with their 4G towers as well...

  • Data server switch in SQL query

    Hi guys,
    I have a question about data server switch in the sql query template. We have been developing all the sql queris pointing to the customer test db server say "TESTDB", now we have to change the db connection to "PRODUCTDB", do we need to change sql queries one by one or is there a better solution for this? I think this is a common requirement to change back and forth data server connection for a bulk number of queries
    Thanks,
    Tony.

    Tony,
    From a design perspective it is advisible to name your data servers in a more abstract way, since the query templates themselves only save the Name of the data server in them.  Data Servers also have a description field (typically overlooked) which will appear in the list and the workbench where you can be explicit or to even serve as a reminder that you are working with either test or production data.  The true 'switch' should happen when you reconfigure your data server settings for server url and user/pwd.
    TESTDB and PRODUCTDB might be better served with a meaningful name that provides a correlation to the data stored in the database.  In more mature system landscapes having a DEV/QA/PROD arrangement of MII servers, the ability to promote content comes from configuration and projects, not from actually changing the content on the same server.
    If you need to rapidly modify your content to adopt this practice then I would simply export the associated project and unzip it to a folder.  Then use windows explorer to do a search for files containing your data server name (they will appear in your query templates as Server="TESTDB").  With a text editor that can do search and replaces across multiple files (http://www.editplus.com is my personal favorite) you can easily change the data server name to a better convention.  Then zip up the folder content and reimport the project.  This will effectively switch your data servers (don't forget to create the new abstract data server in place of the TESTDB and PRODUCTDB).

  • Data coverage?

    I'm really hoping that someone can explain to me why there has been, and remains, a HUGE white hole in Verizon's data coverage map over the area where I live just northeast of St. Louis.  This is a growing area and it puzzles me as to why Verizon would not invest some resources in this area as it is a very noticeable void in the otherwise fairly solid red footprint they have over the entire nation.  We have adequate voice and text coverage using other networks with our Verizon phones, but our data is listed as "extended 1x".  Just wishing that they would actually do something about it.  Does anyone know if there are any resources out there to explain why this has not happened and if there are any plans in place to extend their coverage into our neck of the woods?

    My zip code is 62052 and I have a Samsung Galxy S3 Mini.  WE are perpetually roaming out here and there isn't a Verizon tower for quite a few miles.  There is a tower less than 3 miles from my home (in rural Medora, Illinois) that was built over 5 years ago by an independent tower company and not one single company has leased space on that tower.  If I owned my own land here, I would for sure be contacting Verizon to have them come take a look at my location for a tower!  It just gets frustrating that we are with a great company like Verizon and can't get data except on wifi.

  • Data Protection Switch - FDM

    I am trying to find out how to enable/setup the Data Protection Switch in FDM.
    The FDM manual does not explain how to do it. It just mentions the feature.
    Can anyone tell me how to enable this? Trying to protect data in HFM from being erased upon FDM loads. Certain data is entered directly into HFM using Data Forms (this keeps getting "Replaced" when Upstream loads).
    Any tips would be greatly appeciated.

    Good day James,
    The first requirement is that you have configured FM to have a custom dimension member that is valid for all accounts or the accounts that you want to protect.
    You only have one member that you can secure or all the other members but this one member in any dimension.
    The data protection has three switches that you need to activate to protect the data. To my knowledge this only works with FM. Because FDM extracts the data and attaches the data to the bottom of the data load
    1st Turn on the data Protection (Enable data protection)
    2nd Supply a protection value this is the name dimension member that you want to protect in FM (Protection values)
    3rd Choose your operator, this switch can be set to greater or smaller than not the current protection value as specified above or equal to the protection value which will only protect the members in the named dimension member and all other members in the dimension will be cleared with the replace.
    The best way to implement data protection is to allocate one custom dimensions and load all the General ledger data into a members GL member and the supplementary data into another member/s.

  • Inform users on unsaved data when switching between/starting new TaskFlows?

    Hi
    In our case, we are using the multiTaskFlow concept to dynamically start new TaskFlows in Tabs. The simple requirement is to have a generic way to inform users on modified unsaved data when switching or starting new TaskFlow
    I did research in google for answers, but did not found anything working.
    For example, I added following checks (df=dirtyFlag) just before switching between Tabs and Menu-items:
    boolean df1 = am.getApplicationModuleDef().isDirty();
    boolean df2 = ControllerContext.getInstance().getCurrentRootViewPort().isDataDirty();
    boolean df3 = ControllerContext.getInstance().getCurrentViewPort().isDataDirty();
    boolean df4 = AdfFacesContext.getCurrentInstance().getDirtyPageHandler().isDataDirty();
    boolean df5 = am.getTransaction().isDirty();
    boolean df6 = am.getDBTransaction().isDirty();
    boolean df7 = bindingContext.getDefaultDataControl().isTransactionDirty();
    boolean df8 = dcBindingContainer.getDataControl().isTransactionModified();
    boolean df9 = dcBindingContainer.getDataControl().isTransactionDirty();
    Start Application and perform a TAB switch without searching or changing anything
    df1 true
    df2 false
    df3 false
    df4 false
    df5 false
    df6 false
    df7 false
    df8 false
    df9 false
    Within a TaskFlow I perform a SEARCH and perform a TAB switch, flags change to following:
    df1 true
    df2 true
    df3 true
    df4 true
    df5 true
    df6 true
    df7 false
    df8 false
    df9 false
    I MODIFY values within TF and perform a TAB switch, flags remain same and regardless what I do, they remain so:
    df1 true
    df2 true
    df3 true
    df4 true
    df5 true
    df6 true
    df7 false
    df8 false
    df9 false
    Do you know a working approach?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
    its for when you leave a view, not when you switch task flows in a page. To get back to your question, one thing you forgot to mention is what data control state is it that the task flows have: shared or isolated? If they have a shared state then only a single transaction is on and you should be able to tell the dirty state by calling
    boolean df2 = ControllerContext.getInstance().getCurrentRootViewPort().isDataDirty();
    However, if the task flow is in isolated mode then you will need to get a handle to the data control frame used by that task flow.
    BindingContext ctx = oracle.adf.controller.binding.BindingUtils.getBindingContext();
    String frameName = ctx.getCurrentDataControlFrame();
    DataControlFrame frame = ctx.findDataControlFrame(frameName);
    boolean isDirty = frame.isTransactionDirty();
    //see: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E15051_01/apirefs.1111/e10653/oracle/adf/model/DataControlFrame.htmlHowever, this information is only available from within the task flow, which means to check this from the outside you need to provide a mechanism to get to this information (contextual events would be an option. You define a contextual event receiver on the task flows that when called checks the current transaction state and then "fires" the answer back to the caller, which then obtains a map of task flow transaction states to check before navigating away or switching task flows.

  • Transfering data using switch device manager from old palm to new curve 8330....please help!!!

    Trying for hours to import data using switch device manager from old Palm Treo and Palm Desktop 4.2 to my new Blackberry Curve 8330.  Blackberry seem to connect...but second step of choising Palm or Mircrosort will not allow me to select anything.  I do not believe Palm is connecting...Is my palm to old?  If I cannot tranfer data this way, especially contacts is there any other way besides entering it into Blackberry one by one?

    Hi there!
    If the device switch wizard is not working, check this KB to be sure all of your Palm things are compatible and that you are using the correct process:
    KB05459 How to use the Switch Device Wizard to switch from another smartphone to a BlackBerry smartphone
    And then see this KB for some troubleshooting help
    KB10722 BlackBerry Desktop Manager does not detect the Palm software when using the Switch Device Wizard
    And if it happens that it will not work, then you will have to find out how to export from your Palm to an ASCII or CSV file...then you can import it with this process:
    KB11194 How to import contacts from an CSV file to the BlackBerry device
    Good luck and let us know!

    I recently updated the my Nokia N8 software to PR1.1
    I had used Ovi Maps before and it was working properly. The GPRS data was being utilized for positioning. But after updating the software, the counter at the bottom remains 0.0kb and shows "Not connected symbol"

    . Even I had the same thought at first, so I already checked it before I sharted the topic and I even checked now just to be sure.
    Yes, I CAN browse the internet, both with the Default browser AND with Opera Mobile.
    Also, after I browse the net, I can confirm the data usage in the logs for each session.
    But, when I use Ovi Maps, the session for "Vodafone live!" does exist in the log but the usage is 0kB (U/D).

    Any particular reason for not upgrading OVI Maps to v3.06_10wk46 on your N8 as OVI Suite has been delivering this version for quite a while?
    Here at my side, that update just doesn't show up in Ovi Suite.
    I only see "Real Golf 2011" in the Install Device Application section of Ovi Suite.
    Just to make sure, is this what you mean?

  • Poor data coverage, Amherst MA town center

    Experiencing very poor data coverage, including regular texts, in downtown area of Amherst, MA.  Most of rest of town has good LTE coverage, but past couple of months signal drops to a 1G in the town center, and can rarely get any data to pass, sometimes even basic texts come back as undeliverable.  I have asked others and they say they have the same problem, so not just my phone (IPhone 5).  Being in public safety and working downtown this is a big issue.  It used to be much better coverage here.  I let it go for awhile thinking they were working on a  tower or something but it has now been a couple of months at least.  Looking for an official phone number or email to report it to Verizon but cannot find one.

        KindaUnhappy , I'm sorry you're having issues with your signal. I understand how frustrating it can be to have a phone and cant use the internet which is very important. I recommend power cycling periodically, performing a battery pull, clear the cache and browser history periodically, and close apps your not using daily. I will list steps below. Are your issues occuring inside or outside? Have you every performed a  hard reset on your phone?
    1) Steps to clear cache/browser history http://tiny.cc/k6jwkw
    2) Steps to clear temporary internet files http://tiny.cc/p7jwkw

    I work abroad and i have data roaming switched off. How do i disable the notification that continually pops up when sending a text? I know the data roaming is off because i switched it off, i do not need the phone telling me this everytime i write a text message.

    Turn MMS Message off in Settings > Messages. MMS messages are sent over data unlike SMS. And as stated, MMS uses the Messages app.

  • IPhone battery is terrible if celluar data is switched on

    My iphone battery life is terrible if celluar data is switched on. I am using an iPhone 5 on a 3G tarriff.
    With 3G celluar data switched on, im lucky to get 4 hours of usuage out of my iphone. However if I turn celluar data off and just use WiFi, then it lasts for up to 10 hours of usuage (currently at 59% with 4hrs 55mins usage).
    I've done all the usual things, brightness right down, bluetooth off, location services off, siri off..
    Is there anything I can do to help save battery with celluar data on? As it literally dies at 1% a minute when i use it.
    Many Thanks.

    Hi there Amos21,
    Wihile it sounds like you have done some troubleshooting steps already, I would still recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.

    Battery life seems short
    Click ( www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html) for tips on how to prolong iPhone's battery life.
    Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
    Connect iPhone to iTunes and restore iPhone.
    If the screen shows a low-battery image, the battery is low on power and needs to charge for up to ten minutes before you can use it.
    When charging iPhone, make sure to leave it charging until it is fully charged. You'll know the battery is fully charged when the battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen looks like this .
    Note: When charging using a computer, don't connect iPhone to a keyboard. Also, the computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If iPhone is connected to a computer that's not turned on or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPhone battery may drain.
    Note: Charging with a FireWire-based power source is not supported, except on original iPhone.

  • GPRS data monitor (advanced)

    Does any utility exist to provide the information as to what programs are using GPRS data?
    I have the DataMonitor program, which tracks the totals.
    I also know abou the "log" utility.
    Both of the above display totals and the DataMonitor displays the sent/received data for GPRS and WLAN separately.
    In my case, "something" is accessing the GPRS when I'm not using the phone, and I'm curious as to what that is.  I'm thinking it might be the "social" program that apparently checks for new activity?
    My follow-up question, is if I ever do figure out which programs are doing this, can I configure the N8 with the "always ask" that I used to do on the N95, which prevented the phone from sending/receiving data without my approving it first.
    It's not costing me much $$ right now, but if whatever is doing this gets carried away, I might end up with my pre-pay account emptied out just when I need to use it.

    I very much want something that does what this program claims to do.  I went to the SPB page to buy it, but got all these special bonus messages because of other things I've bought before.  First they gave me 20% off, and then they told me I had enoughcredits to get it free.
    I downloaded the trial version, which is now installed and presumably running on my phone.  After reading the review of the software, I figured I would just let it run for a day or so, and then see what kind of data it was coming up with.
    (They did follow through and send me the registration code, so it's not all registered.)
    I know it's not a Nokia program (but it should be!!!!!); after reading endless discussions in these forums about "what" is accessing the wireless, I think this program should be promoted like crazy for anyone who buys a Nokia smart phone.  I'd like to see it as a "log file", compiled by the N8 software, but SPB's current version is probably far more than what Nokia would provide - so even then it would be worthwhile.

  • Report poor data coverage

    Where can I report poor data coverage for my verizon 4G LTE hotspot?
    Salem Oregon, 97305.
    Specifically the Corner of Cordon Rd and Hazelgreen Rd NE.  A little place called EZ Orchards has very poor data coverage. DOesn't matter inside, outside or upside down they unit get only 1 bar of data and cycle between 4G LTE AND 3G, it even show 1x evdo and basically useless.

        We're here to do a service checkup nglayton! May I ask have you contacted our customer service dept yet? If not then let's look into this together. May I ask what model hotspot/jetpack do you have? Any liquid/physical damage on the device? Do you have any issues in another area outside of the zip code that you provided? As you share the details then we can investigate.
