GPS charges on 5800???

Hi, I have just installed a 16 day free trial of Viewranger on my 5800 for use when I am out Mountain Biking to log my route and use as a map. Obviously for this to be effective, I have to have the GPS running. What I want to know because 02 CAN NOT give a guarenteed answer is, will I get charged for having the GPS running while I am out on a ride for about 2 hours?  I have unlimited internet (browsing, 02 active) if that makes any difference?

Hi mikeevans15
Assisted GPS feature only needs to download 2-5 kbs of data for a positional fix, so can't you check in phone log the amount of data downloaded in say 30 minutes and I am sure that you will find it negligible. As "grschinon" has mentioned o2 can't discriminate what type of data you are downloading and you could always disable "Assisted GPS" feature in "Positioning methods" as ViewRanger doesn't need internet connection unless you are utilizing Buddy Beacon"

  • Efficasoft GPS Utilities Problem (5800)

I used the GPS Utilities on my old N91 and was quite pleased with it and now want to load a new version onto my new 5800. The demo version loads and runs but none of the setup options are 'clickable' which means that I cannot change the default settings.
Efficasoft are not replying to my emails so I wondered if anybody else had downloaded this software to a 5800 and had a similiar problem? Don't want to purchase if this problem exists on the registered product.

GPS Utilities is designed for S60v3 phones. The 5800 is a S60v5 phone. Some things may work, but you may have to wait for an update.
If I have helped you with your problem in some way, please take a little time and hit the kudos button in my post. Without your feedback, I don't know if I am being helpful or should just be put out to pasture.

It will be fine.  My father uses a similar inverter to power TV's, DVD's, phones etc whilst away from home. His has worked fine with a N95, 5800 and X6.

  • Nokia LD-4W GPS receiver with 5800 XM

Is Nokia LD-4W GPS receiver compatible with Nokia 5800? Is it better / more accurate than 5800 built-in GPS receiver?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    LD-3W:
    65g (still feels really light)
    15 hours operating time
    7 Days Standby
It is also a nice small size being compact and light
    LD-4W:
    31g
    11 hours operating time
    4 days standby
The only real thing the LD-4W is better than the LD-3W with is looks. Personally-especially as its cheaper-I would go for the LD-3W.

  • Charge your 5800 (or other 2mm jack Nokia phone) v...

One minor issue with my 5800 is wondering why it cannot charge off the micro-USB. For someone who travels a lot it would make a lot of sense in that I would carry one less item (the wall charger) and it would give me the ability to charge if I can locate a micro-USB connection somewhere.
Well, I found a nice little solution. This USB connector is smaller than an AC cord and you don't have to worry about international electrical adapters.
    http://europe.nokia.com/ca-100
Note: you cannot use this for data. It is power only. If you have two open USB slots, you can charge and transfer data at the same time if you have this item AND the micro-USB.

Better still, use the CA-126 cable, which is both data and power using a single USB port.

    Hi Clark
It will always try to establish a "network connection" unless you disable it, of course if WLAN is your access point then there is no charge!

  • Usb car charger not fully charge Nokia 5800

    Hi,
I have a usb car charger with a cable that has a usb plug on one end, and on the other end
there is a nokia 2.0mm charger plug.
    like this one:
    http://www.myonetwothree.com/items/Electronics/MoAs009/MoAs_2003_22_CarChr/MoAs_2003_22_CarChr_02.jp...
But the problem is that it's not fully charge my Nokia 5800, only about 85%-90%.
Could this charger can fully charge a nokia 5800?
    on the charger itself it's written "DC 5V +- 5%  Max= 1000mA"
    Thank you.

Voltage of the charger needs to be about 5.5 V to fully charge it. There are some car usb chargers which give 5.5 V some which give only 5 V. You need to check them and see if they work properly with your nokia.

  • No more fast GPS fix with 5800 XM v40.0.005 using ...

    Hi to all,
I'm so diappointed to have losen one of the best strength of my nokia 5800 XM (fast GPS fix thanks to A-GPS function).
Indeed, it's now inconceivable to hope a GPS fix before 5 or 10 minutes while staying at the same place. Thus, we lose all the interest of the GPS driving through a city !!!!
I tried soft and hard reset but nothing seems to be helpful, i'm now convinced the problem is due to the firmware (v40.0.005 but I already had this problem in v31.0.101).
Unfortunately the new Ovi Maps version didn't either solve the problem...
Could you give your feedbacks on the problem or explain me how the problem might be resolved ?
    Thanks to all

As you already had the problem best guess
would be a hardware problem  rather than  firmware .
Take phone to a Nokia Care Centre   or you could try wiping the phone and memory card and starting from a clean install .

  • Problem with GPS on Nokia 5800

Some days back i had big problem in getting GPS work to get my current location. I followed some intsturctions provided by one of the forum members and it seems to have worked.
Now the problem is, even when i am in the open area where satellite status  shows more than 5 available, i am unable to get a lock on my current position. Instead i get "GPS works poorly on indoors..." message. My mobile is still under warranty. Should i need to go and check with Nokia Care center? or is this could a confiugration problem?
i have Assisted, Network and integrated enabled and have GPRS enabled.
Any help would be realy apprecieated
Not to mention, i am on 4x firmware with latest Maps software and also have downloaded India Maps using maps downloader
    Cheers

    Hi KarthikK
This message sounds as if device can't communicate with the "Positioning server" so I would check that it is "supl.nokia.com" and confirm in Destinations > Internet that your desired network access point is prioritized.
Latest Nokia Maps v3.04Beta also utilizes an additional positioning method, Wi-fi/Network to speed up positional fix especially indoors as per screenshot:http://i43.tinypic.com/2mrcq68.jpg

  • Problem with GPS in Nokia 5800

I'm in Nokia Maps, I click in "my position" and it shows me the red dot in south of Portugal (Algarve). Well, that would be cool if I were there, but I'm not! I'm in the north (Braga). I want to connect via sattelite and not via internet, cause I want to use it when I'm driving. Can somebody help me?

    Hi gui94
If you won't give the Assisted GPS feature a network internet connection albeit to download 7 kb of data then your first fix is going to take longer to achieve and would suggest you go outside away from tall buildings preferably with clear view of sky.
The position achieved using the Network GPS (cell tower location) can sometimes be well off the mark unfortunately but not usually by that much and then you will get a "Black ring" around the centre when locked on to position at which time you will see next to satellite icon green bars instead of yellow.

  • GPS LD-3W and nokia 5800 charger

    hi , i have a nokia 5800 and a wireless gps module ( LD-3W) .
in bundle for Gps i received a DC-4 car charger  but i need also charge GPS module at home .
May i use the nokia 5800 charger for this ?
     i remember that :
5800 charger is  5v/890mA .. and GPS  charger is 5,7v/890 mA
    thanks

    Someone asked so;
My 5530 charger works fine charging the LD-3W; its because nokia only every 1 of 2 chargers the large tip or the small tip.
Yes the LD-3W works really well and except for the LD-3W having some extra battery life I heard that the 3w and 4w are really quite similar.
I am not too sure on the specs of them for accuracy and positioning but when i use mine it updates quite quickly (with only little jumps while in my car) and it gets the right position all the time.
I believe the LD-4W should work fine with the 5530 also.
And if you do not have nokia/ovi maps then you should get it. Its free and it has full navigation now.
    Ovi Maps
    ++If you have a 5530 you have to download the 5800 maps application from here;
    http://maps.nokia.com/ovi-services-and-apps/ovi-maps/downloads#/nokia-5800-xpressmusic/
Its up to you but I just choose download from pc which is at the bottom as it wont cost you data charges etc for using   you mobile.
++Next install the app on your phone
    ++Now thats it just install ovi suite from here;
    http://europe.nokia.com/support/download-software/nokia-ovi-suite
and choose what maps you want to download and by choosing update you can check your app is up to date.
Most of this info above plays to the 5800 aswell

  • Some questions on the 5800 GPS

    Hi folks
i am debating at the moment whether to upgrade from my N95 to a N95 8GB or the lovely 5800, i prefer the symbian OS so im glad to stay with these two phones. now i had tomtom 6 working fine on my N95 and i know it will work ok on the N95 8GB but the verdict i find on the interwebs is a bit hit and miss as to whether it will work on the 5800. however i am more interested in the Nokia Maps
now as i understand this program is included and you can use the A-GPS built in GPS but can you use an external source? i have a BT GPS antenna and would be happy to use this to avoid paying A-GPS charges is this feature still ok with nokia maps? also is it possible to just run the nokia maps through the built in GPS and not using the A-GPS.
i also just want to clarify something about the maps too, as i understand it comes with the function built in to navigate you point to point but doesnt include voice instruction. you pay extra for that functionaility?
thanks very much folks id love to give the 5800 a twirl as much as i love the N95 i love to try new stuff
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thanks! I'm planning to head to the shops tomorrow to get 5800 XM.
I never actually tried seeing if there was a visual turn by turn navigation on my friends' phones before because I thought there wasn't one. Hmm. Do you mean the "tracking" option? The very early version of Nokia Maps on N95 had that tracking option (Maps 1.x?), but the new ones don't (Maps 2.0).
Paying for navigation is a bit steep for me after I convert the price to my currency. So I totally understand! I might try monthly though for special events.
Thanks for the kudos. Do skim through the rest of this board section. You might find your answer since 5800 XM uses Maps 2.0 which is available in other phones too. I learnt a lot of info from here.

  • Want to know how the GPS works on nokia 5800?

Hi, are there any documentation explaining the working principle of how gps on nokia 5800 actually works? I want a kind of in-depth understanding...Thanx in advance.

Network based positioning is the fastest, but most inaccurate. Basically, it looks at what cell tower you're connected to, and approximates your location to be the location of that tower. The phone will use this FIRST (if you have enabled it), because it gives you an approximiate position while you wait for GPS to work.
Integrated GPS is the actual GPS receiver built into your phone.  It receives signals from the network of GPS satellites and calculates your position.  Due to the inherent design of the civilian GPS system, it takes time for the receiver to see enough satellites to figure out where you are.  Because sometimes this time can be 5 minutes or more, the cell companies developed Assisted GPS.
Assisted GPS (AGPS) is just regular GPS, helped out by a server on the internet. Your phone will take partial GPS data (not enough to get a fix on its own), and send that data to a server (in our case supl.nokia.com).  The server knows a LOT more about the exact locations of GPS satellites at any given time, so based on partial information it can compute a very good approximation of your location.  This happens very quickly because a server has a much more powerful processor, and many more resources, than your phone (to put it simply).  The amount of data actually sent is very very small (less than 1KB every time).  AGPS helps out in getting a position fix quickly when the gps receiver hasn't been used for a while, or when you are in an area without great GPS reception.
So the order of methods used by the phone in your case is as follows. First it will give you an "approximate" position using Network Based Positioning. This will happen almost instantly.  Then the phone will immediately get to work trying to get a GPS fix, and will use the AGPS server if you have allowed it to.  Note that you must have an internet plan with your cell provider for AGPS to work, since it sends data to supl.nokia.com which is on the internet.
    Hope that clarifies things,
    Ravi
