GPS chip in the fourth generation iPhone

Does anyone know if the GPS chip in the fourth generation iPhone is the same one that is in the iPad or the one from the iPhone 3GS? The iPad chip is much better.

Yes.
GPS signals are separate from and completely unrelated to both the Internet and the cellular telephone network.  GPS signals come directly from the GPS satellites.  They provide signals that allow GPS receivers to calculate latitude and longitude information.  Navigation software then takes that latitude/longitude info and converts it to land mass, roads, bridges, highways, buildings, etc.
Most navigation software stores the maps right in the iPad/iPod/iPhone but a disadvantage is that the maps must be periodically updated (perhaps once every two years).  The Internet is not required to use the system but it is required to update the maps.
Some navigation software gets the maps from the Internet and requires an Internet connection to function but an advantage is that the maps are always up-to-date.
The WiFi+3G/4G iPad and the iPhone both have a GPS receiver.  The WiFi-only iPad and the iPod do not and these devices require an accessory.

  • I currently have the 1st generation iphone. I am looking into upgrade, which iphone do you suggest 3GS or the iphone 4?

I currently have the 1st generation iphone. I am looking to upgrade, which iphone would you suggest?  iphone 3GS or the iphone 4?  other?

Yes!! I have been told by many to buy the 3GS iphone. They love it and tell me I would, too.  But thanks to you, Dad and Michele, for your information that you have provided; I will purchase the iphone 4. With the great Facetime feature, I will be able to use it with my daughter who is stationed in Japan with her husband. By the way, I keep hearing that Apple will be making iphone in white. When will that happen?  Thanks again!

  • If i buy an iphone now, can i buy the next generation iphone at the upgrade price?

help me! if i buy an iphone now, can i buy the next generation iphone at the upgrade price?

No. It takes more than a year for AT&T or Verizon to give you a discounted price for an upgrade.

  • I have two iPods, one from the fourth generation and another one that must be from the first generation iPod nano. Can I trade them both in?

    The Fourth generation- 16GB
    First generation-4GB

Apple does not have a "trade in" program for iPods, other than the recycling program that gives you a 10% discount on a new iPod (at an Apple Retail Store).

There are some third-party (non-Apple) companies that provide compensation for old iPods.  You can also sell them yourself on eBay.

  • Does the GPS feature on the new G3 iPhone an extra monthly expense?

I have just pre-ordered the new G3 iPhone. The sales person at the AT&T store told me that when the phone comes in, we can set up my account to include texting and GPS features. I thought one feature of the G3 phone was the GPS and am surprised that AT&T can charge a fee for an Apple application. I'm hoping someone can help with this question so I can have accurate information before I go back to the store to get my phone.

GPS is just hardware that receives a signal, and yeah, that's built into the phone. Usually when people pay more for "GPS", it's really a navigation program with maps that they are paying for. As far as I know, there are no programs available for the iPhone to do that yet, but I think AT&T does offer Navigation services for their other smartphones. So the AT&T rep may have just misspoke.
In all the many articles that I have read about pricing, there has been nothing about extra fees for GPS. ATT rate plans:

  • Is the 1rst generation iphone a smartphone? or does it charge any extra?, is the 1rst generation iphone a smartphone? or does it charge any extra?

Is the 2g iphone like a regular phone now, with out a data plan, or extra charge per month?

Yes, it is a smart phone.
You would have to ask your carrier what plan they require.

  • Should you get iPad 2, 3, or wait for the fourth generation?

Clearly, iPad 3 is known for its amazing retina display, but is sometimes known to overheat if you use it for a while.
So if you don't have an iPad, but you don't want your ipad to overheat, wait for iPad 4.
If you don't have an iPad, but you don't care about the overheating, buy iPad 3, because it is still pretty great.
If you have an iPad, stick with it and see what iPad 4 brings to the tablet market.
When it comes down to storage size,
If you play big games and watch movies a lot, get the 64.
If you like surfing the web, checking email, get a 16.
If you are a little bit of both, theres a 32 gig iPad with your name on it.
If you have a computer with internet at home, there is no point in getting 3G. Depends how rich you are - it's all a luxury anyway.
Smart Covers are quite brilliant. They are perfect for watching TV, playing games, and pretty much everything. Sometimes it is nice to have a more protective case though, but in the end it comes down to personal preference.
When it comes down to color, get the black version. The white tends to get dirty.
If I got and iPad, I would get a black Wi-Fi 64 gig with a lime green smart cover.
    Hope this helped!

  • AppStore: What is the difference between "iPhone" & "iPhone (2nd generation

While submitting to iTunesconnect, there are 2 options for Device :
    a) *iPhone and iPod touch*
    and
    b) *iPhone and iPod touch (2nd generation)*
    What does *2nd generation* mean?
Does it mean devices with v 2.1 and above?
I thought it meant devices which supported native apps which would make it *2.0 and above*
Would greatly appreciate any clarification to this.
    -TRS

The main difference is that the 2nd generation iPhone (the 3G one) supports faster data transmission over 3G mobile networks and has a GPS module build in, meaning that the Core Location Framework will very likely produce more precise results.
Other from that: No real differences with respect to programming for the iPhone.

  • 1st generation iPhone and Early Termination Fee

Hello all, here's a question, since it was announced that AT&T will no longer share revenue with Apple does this now mean that owners of the unsubsidized 1st generation iphone will be able to get out of their 2 year contracts early without a Early Termination Fee?

    More than likely, yes.
The first generation iPhone was not subsidized in the traditional way, as the iPhone 3G will be subsidized.
at&t did not provide a subsidy or a discount to you on the sales price of the first generation iPhone.
I became an at&t subscriber 3-4 months prior to the iPhone being available. I selected a phone that was subsidized by at&t agreeing to a new two year contract. I activated my iPhone as an existing subscriber agreeing to a new two year contract on my iPhone's activation date. I was not charged an early contract termination fee or any penalty when doing so, and I still have my original phone that was subsidized by at&t which I've used with my iPhone's SIM card on occasion.
The same should apply when purchasing the iPhone 3G, which will require agreeing to a new two year contract beginning on the activation date for the 3G iPhone with no early contract termination fee penalty for the existing iPhone - which was not subsidized in the traditional way as the iPhone 3G will be subsidized.

  • Can I still get the support of the first gen iPhone if I buy Applecare?

Can I still get the support of the first generation iPhone if I buy Applecare? If I can't then can it be replaced by Apple?

Sorry, but you cannot buy AppleCare after the original one year warranty on your iPhone expired. If your  phone is damaged you can purchase an exchange for a refurbished one.
If your iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad is Broken
Apple does not fix iDevices. Instead, they exchange yours for a refurbished or new replacement depending upon the age of your device and refurbished inventories. On rare occasions when there are no longer refurbished units for your older model, they may replace it with the next newer model.
ATTN: Beginning July 2013 Apple Stores are now equipped to do screen repairs/replacements in-house on iPhone 5s. In some cases while you wait. According to Apple this is the beginning of equipping Apple Stores with the resources needed to do most repairs for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches that would not require major replacements. Later in the year the services may be extended as Apple Stores become equipped and staffed with the proper repair expertise. So, if you need a screen repaired or a broken screen replaced or have your stuck Home button fixed, call your local Apple Store to see if they are now doing these in-house.
You may take your device to an Apple retailer for help or you may call Customer Service and arrange to send your device to Apple:
