GPS Coverage

Hey everyone.  I'm currently waiting for my Droid Incredible to arrive at my house and this will be my first smartphone so I need some feedback on the GPS in a certain situation I will be having in the next week.
So my question is, will the GPS on the phone be able to lead me from Cincinnati Ohio all the way to Speedwell Tennessee?  I will be taking 75 South pretty much all the way down until I think it is State Route 25 near Jacksboro.  I looked at the Coverage Map and there is mostly blue on the whole route but I noticed green bars in some areas and some white areas (no service) near some places on 75.  If I for some reason I lose service on the trip, will it kick me out of the GPS? Also do those green bars on the blue areas mean something that I should be aware of like limited 3G coverage?
Here a easy link to the coverage map in case you want to have a look for yourself. http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/CoverageLocatorController
Also can someone tell me what the enchanced services mean on the coverage map?

Looks to me like you should have good data coverage at least until you get into TN and leave I-75.
I just made a trip from central OK to central SC and had not intended to use my Droid Eris as my primary GPS but it ended up working out pretty well.  I don't have any personal experience with the Incredible but my experience with Google Navigation is that it will continue to guide you just fine during data outages as long as you continue to have a GPS signal.  Google prefetches info for your route ahead and will continue to display your route as long as you do not deviate.  However, the few times I lost data coverage, I was traveling along an interstate or major highway.  I don't know if it would do as well with many turns.  Looks like if you lose your data coverage, it will be closer to your destination where you will likely have more turns or more chance to deviate, so your experience may differ from mine.
Here is Google's explanation of how Navigation works during data coverage loss:

Hope that helps
Awesome!  That helps a lot.  The only problem I really see having then is the GPS draining the battery within an hour or 2.

Love my Torch and have had no problems with it until Tuesday this week, when GPS packed up. Foursquare no longer finding places nearby, and BB Maps unable to find location. Refreshed GPS loads of times, indoors and out. This is the case at home, at work and elsewhere in same city (Sunderland) Have been into 02 shop, who reinstalled operating system, and said it should work, but no joy. Then today, was in Gateshead (all of 6 miles away) and suddenly GPS was working. Got home, and no longer working. Until today, i'd been thinking it could be a hardware problem, but the fact it started working suggests not. Any idea what the problem might be? I should say i've never had any problem with GPS coverage at home or work before, and colleagues with other phones are okay.

If you've refreshed the GPS loads of times and it still doesn't work every time, I'm not sure what the problem could be.  To aid the GPS, you might make sure you have your network connection to assist your GPS in locating you.  This won't explain why your GPS isn't running 100%, but it'll make sure you can always get a fix on where you are.
To do this, from your homescreen go to Options>Device>Location Settings, scroll down to Location Aiding and click the Setting to Enabled.  Then press the menu key and select Save.
If you want to test your GPS, go to Options>Device>Device and Status Information.  Once on that screen, type in "test" (without quotations) and open the test utility.  There will be no field in which to enter it and nothing will appear on your screen....just type it in.  Click a couple of times to get to the actual test screen, scroll down to GPS, check that box and click to start the test.  This will test your GPS and give you information about it.
Let us know if that helps you.

  • X301 and pre-installed Lenovo Software

    Hello to everybody.
    I'm new in this community.
    I've been a ThinkPad user since 1997 (600, R52, T60p) and now I've bought a X301 with Win 7 32 bit.
Comparing the Laptop with my previous T60p with Win XP, I have some doubts about the configuration and the preinstalled software (Think Vantage Tools) wich comes with it. Maybe someone here can help me.
    My doubts are:
    - why is not possible to get the productivity center and get it in association with the blue button?
    - why is the Active Protection software pre-installed (and loaded at startup), when the HD is an SSD one?
    - the GPS doesn't work (Only one time I've got one satellite in an open environment, where my phone gets full GPS coverage, otherweise normal is 0 satellite)
    - the fingerprint recognition at startup is very very slow
    - every Lenovo software, when launched, opens very slowly (minutes).
This is the situation I've found out of the box. I'm wondering whether the Laptop has left the factory with a wrong configuration (I mean, for Win 7 and SSD) and if I would be able to set everything in the right status through the use of System-Update.
Thank-you to everyone and, please, excuse my terrible English.

The great idea is - to update Media Player. But telling you by secret - it's a bad idea. The really great idea - not to use MP at all. Use Winamp, foobar, VLC(+skins) or iTunes, but not MP...

  • Iphone and Navigation

I'm using Navigon on my IPHONE and could'nt believe that the Navigon people have on their faq page the information to reorganize (delete completly and reload the Phone) to get a good GPS Performance. But the funny thing is that this is absolutely true. After running the Phone for 2 weeks using it as phone and EMail client and infrequently as IPOD the GPS coverage goes down and down becoming lately unuseable (up to three minutes to fix a position). After a complete Reset and reload everything is ok. And again for 2-3 weeks.
Is this how it was designed or is this a big big bug in the OS ????
    best regards
    Herbie

I AM NOT A programmer but i recall reading many years ago when i was using a palm a similar suggestion as well as one that i read in the windows 98 era (delete swap file defrag in safe mode and re-create fixed size swap file ) the reasoning is that if all the info is in one contiguous block it will be faster to access and use. I do not know the file structure of the iphone and do not know if the reasoning holds but by the suggestion of the developer i assume somthing similar is happening here

  • GPS Maps Outside of Phone Coverage when Traveling

*Is there anyway to download maps for your destination using a computer and then onto the iphone before you go?*
Most people need a map when they are traveling, not in their local area.
To download maps using the limited 3G network coverage while traveling is EXPENSIVE.
A lot of places just do not have 3G and using 2G to download maps on the fly is SLOW & EXPENSIVE.
Many places interesting places in the world do not have any phone coverage at all.
So how useful is the GPS function on the iphone if you are in an area where you cannot download a map.
Is there anyway to download maps for your destination using a computer and then onto the iphone before you go?

Perhaps you have not done much traveling. I have.
I am also very experienced at reading all types of maps, including
topographical maps on land and depth contour maps and so on at sea.
So map reading is not the problem for me.
Actually getting good maps, that are easy to use even from guide books is
quite difficult. It is not really convenient to have to carry a heavy
guidebook around every where. In some places the maps from guide books
have inadequate or incorrect coverage. In Japan or China it can be difficult to
come to grips with the calligraphy, sometimes there just aren't any road signs.
So a GPS map device becomes are very useful piece of kit. Unfortunately as much as I like Mac stuff and wanted the iPhone for this purpose, it is in its current
form not very useful for travelers.
The Nokia maps can be preloaded (so at least you can avoid expensive download costs) but the coverage is quite limited. Samsung have a new 16+16Gb GPS phone that with pre-purchased GPS maps could do the job.
Apple could fairly easily fix the iPhone GPS software so that you can preload all the Google maps for a country before you leave. After all you generally know where you are going. If Apple was to do this then I would get the iPhone
but until then I will keep looking for a better solution.

  • Yoga 10 wifi and GPS problem

    Hi Community,
I bough a few days ago a YOGA-10 tablet (system data below).
    I'm facing two problems :
    a) My wireless is very poor. I'm often out of wifi coverage and everyone around, with other devices, work fine.
    b) I need the Yoga-10 to test GPS based apps.
However GPS is failing too often.
I also use MobiWIA GPS Status & Toolbox app and, in a 50km's trip with my Yoga in the front seat, I get 0 satelites fixed (although 10-11 visible) on 80% of the time (all other devices get 100% coverage).
    Any suggestion ?
Btw, as far as I understand, Yoga-1 does not support Glonass satellites, right ?
    Thank you in advance

  • Poor 3g reception issue does not come from being in a low coverage area.

For All of you who keep saying that "If youre in a low coverage area the 3g service wont work you must turn off 3g". That is not a solution. Yes it fixes the problem of not being able to talk on the phone but that is just a workaround that in my opinion is not acceptable. The name of the phone is iPhone 3g. The entire reason for buying this phone is the 3g network. If thats not there and frankly who cares about the GPS as its pretty much useless, then we could have kept our old phones. There are numerous reports of people using their old devices with 3g side by side and getting great reception on their other handset. In my opinion there is a problem with this phone and it should probably be returned until apple figures out what they did wrong. Its not the 3g network and its not a lack of coverage as other handsets are getting great reception. ITS THE PHONE!!!

I removed all of the interface methods and set those properties and it still
    didn't work.
I also have a custom skin on this class. I removed that and tabbing started
    to work again.
Is there any good advise on how to prevent my skin from having effect on the
group within the container? I've seen a good bit about focus and skins, but
nothing about skins on a container? all the skin has is replacements for the
header bar and the close button.
    Thanks!

  • Gps in chicago

did anyone experience problems with gps today in chicago aria?

There are no maps on the iPhone.  All maps are downloaded via the Wi-Fi or Cellular data connection.  If you are out of the coverage area, then you get no maps.
You can purchase navigation apps, like Tom Tom and Garmin in the US that will download the map data directly to the device.

  • GPS maps to south america

Hello i am from uruguay south america. Blackberry maps doesnt have uruguay as a coverage area, does anyone know where can i found a software that allow me to use gps with voice step by step to go from one direction to other. Thank you very much

You typically will need a SIM card for the country you are travelling in. If you don't, then you may encounter roaming charges.
You may want to contact your current SIM providor, Optus, and see if they have service in the South American countries you are going to visit.

  • Gps maps in E71

I am trying to use my maps GPS but my phone keeps telling me I'm in Russia when in fact I'm in UAE ( So's the phone ) How do I get it to recognise the place it's living.

Go somewhere where you have good access to clear skies (no tall buildings, etc), turn on Maps and wait...
    ...and wait...
It could take a while to get an initial fix when you move from one part of the globe to the other. In some extreme cases you might have to wait for half an hour (though the US should have pretty good satellite coverage, so it should only be five or ten minutes).
Once you get an initial fix, the next time you open Maps it will find your location quicker.
The reason for all this is that Maps remembers your last location and then uses that as the starting point for gather GPS satellite data. When you move a significant distance - like from the UK to the USA - then the satellite data that is cached is all wrong. This means that the program goes on a wild goose chase looking for particular satellite signals that it "thinks" it should be able to see. When it eventually figures out that it can't see those satellites, it goes looking for others.
End result is that when you haven't move too far between uses of your GPS, you get a reasonably quick satellite lock. But if you move to the other side of the world, it'll take a lot longer than it should.
So be patient and see how you go.
If I've helped you, you can thank me by clicking the green 'kudos' star on my post. Cheers.

  • Extend coverage in marginal area.

I work in a windowless part of a building. I am able to send and receive text messages and my phone might ring but I will lose the connection. What equipment can install to improve coverage. I am aware of the Samsung Network Extender but it requires a GPS lock and unless I can extend the GPS antenna to the roof (approx 100 ft.) I doubt that it will work.

        Hello glweston42!
I regret to learn of any issues with the service inside your building. It's true that being near a window does make a difference, as you mentioned. However, a Network Extender is something that can still work with you in that location. Check out the details here: http://vz.to/1mUMB9t

  • GPS not working all the time, and 3G radio not turning on

    Alright,
Here's the situation in a nutshell.  I have done extensive trial and errors trying to troubleshoot my own phone.  And by the way, I’m on my 4th Incredible.  I have come to the conclusion it’s not my phone, at least for now.  When I’m in a Verizon area (towers), my GPS works the best.  Locks on to signal within seconds.  Ok, where i live we have the Alltel towers yet which are being divested to ATT.  So, when i bring up the GPS/Nav/Latitude etc, etc. the GPS never locks on and just sits there searching.  Now, if i leave a Verizon coverage with my NAV on it works fine all the way home.  Next, i turn off my NAV and wait a few seconds or minutes and then turn it back on, i get nothing.  There is something wrong with the towers or something where i live.  Does the Incredible download the GPS assistance from the towers to better locate the satellites?  Also, most of the time if i do a reboot, i have to place my phone into Airplane mode, wait, then turn it off to get my radio to turn on.  I was in a Verizon area this past weekend and restarted my phone like 4-5 times and the 3g Radio would turn on no problem.  I think I’m getting close to the problem at hand.  I just need some assistance from a techy at Verizon.  I hope I explained this thoroughly.  As everyone knows this screws up all my location apps to show the wrong location.
    Thanks

Looky what i found.  I found this on another forum that a guy figured out.  Verizon, please get a patch for this or a permanent fix.  We shouldn't have to do this to make the GPS work.  My phone doesn't say i'm roaming, but i do live in an Extended Network.
    Here it is:
One way to get a GPS lock when Roaming.
Like some others in this thread, I can track myself with the GPS on the satellite map from home (in Verizon service area) to our cabin in NE Pennsylvania (Extended Network in the white area not covered on the Verizon map). The tracking is accurate. It even follows me down the path to the water. But, when I turn off the map so save battery, I can't obtain a GPS lock when I turn mapping back on. GPS Test sees the satellites, but won't lock. By trial and error, I discovered that if I put the phone in Airplane mode and turn it off, (wait a while), and turn it on while still in Airplane mode (Signal Strength 0dBm - Not Roaming - because it doesn't know that it's in Extended Network with radio off), I can get a GPS lock just as quick as I can at home (in Verizon territory - not roaming) - usually less than minute using GPS Test. Once I have the lock, I can turn Airplane mode off and the map and tracking work perfectly (I have 3G and 1X, to download maps, depending on location), and continue to work until I close the map, at which point I have to do the Shutdown in Airplane mode work around.
Answers in this and other forums as well as Verizon and HTC support are all over the map (no pun intended). Verizon says I need a cell signal to lock while HTC says not necessary at all, and others have various solutions. Clearly, the phone is able to obtain a GPS lock without any cell signal since it locks in Airplane mode. It seems to be some sort of software problem in that IF it thinks the phone is Roaming it must be waiting for some sort of A-GPS signal, and won't lock. Also, it won't work if I simply put in Airplane mode without re-booting because it's still in Roaming status. But when it's booted in Airplane mode and it doesn't know it's in a Roaming area, it relies on the internal GPS to get a lock. (For some reason, I have to leave it off for a while for this to work). So the hardware seems to be working fine.
I got this phone to eliminate the need for a separate GPS, and I have figured out how to use it when out of Verizon's area. But it's ridiculous to have to go through the shutdown in Airplane mode, wait a while, and reboot just to get a GPS lock. If Apple can do it, why can't Verizon? It seems like this would be pretty easy to fix by writing a software patch that uses the standalone GPS if a A-GPS signal is not available. Does anyone know if Google is looking into this? Does anyone have any other ideas on how to get the GPS to work without rebooting while Roaming?

  • No GPS lock in the Dominican Republic

I have installed this version of 3.06 on my Nokia 5230 Nuron
    ovi_maps_installer_3.06_11wk7_b11_s60_5.0_nocs_beta.sis
which works very well in the USA. I have no data plan with T-mobile so I do not use any internet connectivity to assist the GPS. I went to the Dominican Republic where I had no T-Mobile coverage (and didn't expect to) for 10 days and just got back. Before I left I loaded the DR map onto my phone. I thought that the GPS should work fine there because it doen't require a data plan and it doesn't require any phone coverage. I could never get a GPS lock or even show a GPS signal while there. Am I wrong about what is required for the GPS to work on these phones?
    Thanks.

    @gregorycharper
There are no holes in GPS satellite coverage, although the number of remaining satellites which could be brought into service in case of failure are now quite depleted.
As farby pointed out if you relying solely on Integrated GPS as a positioning method, it is like starting OVI Maps application for the very first time again and you need to give it sufficient time to lock on to your new location.

Not relevant... the app is only for finding one device from another iOS device.
Without a SIM, Find My iPhone will not work.
