GPS Fix problem

Hi all,
I'm a developer for IGN France, I develop an app in Qt which uses Location API.
I really don't understand the GPS on the 5800 XpressMusic.
I explain, when I'm using the GPS, the first fix takes several time (10 to 20min), for the first fix, I know that's normal.
But if I turn off the GPS for 20min, the next fix take 10 to 20 min but not everytime...
And that happen with a clear sky, without any cloud...
All is done without the A-GPS activated because my app will be used in some place that you can't use A-GPS.
So why,for the second fix, it takes so long sometime  and sometime it's very fast ?
Is there a config file which store some informations like others devices ?
Or all my customer must use A-GPS everytime they need the location ?
Thank for reply.

When the phone has a clear satellite signal it starts caching ephemeris data. This information will speed up future GPS locks, but the data expires relatively quickly (hence the name).
Help I'm trapped in a sig factory.

  • E52 internal GPS fix problem only with OVI Maps

    Hi all,
I read many many E52 phones suffer Internal GPS fix problems.
I don't beleve this is an hardware problem, but only a software bug.
    My experiments say this:
    1) Start phone, start Ovi Maps -> No lock at all. (only 1 blinking line in bottom left corner)
    2) Start phone, start McGuider (Sygic) navigator -> E52 locks quite immedeately. (in the same place!!)
    3) After GPS is locked, start Ovi Maps again. Now also Maps works great!
    4) Also the gps built-in application under Menu->Applications->GPS->GPS Data has the same behaviour as Ovi Maps.
Anyone can try and report this or similar experience?
    Thank you!

    Thank you for the response.
I'm sure the fix is faster if i use A-GPS, but i i have to pay for data connection.
And, above all, Sygic works perfectly WITHOUT A-GPS, so why Ovi Maps does not?
Yes, you have to pay, but the connection takes about 20sec. About Sygic you're right I noticed that too. It locks pretty fast.

  • 5230 GPS fix problem (have gps signal but no gps f...

    hi
    i have a nokia 5230
    software version V20.0.005 / 23-03-2010
    custom version 20.0.005.315.02 / 29-04-2010
    type RM-588
    not updated
CODE 0597862 - Latest available software for your device Version 20.0.005
    GPS positioning methods:
A-GPS = OFF (I dont have/dont want data traffic charge)
    IntGPS = ON
    BlueGPS = OFF
    Network Based = ON
    Positioning server use = disable
    Software used:
Default nokia gps applications - GPS positioning (not the ovi map)
Nokia sports tracker v3.50(0) (S60 3.1) 2-08-2010 (mostly for GPS logging)
    Garmin XT
The problem - GPS fix is taking (sometimes) very long periods from 1 - 5 hours or in same cases it does not make a GPS fix. Other times (about 25% of tries) it calculates GPS fix in a few minutes (1-15min).
I use the GPS only outdoors within open sky and hill/forest (not in urban, tall buildings). Usualy is clear sky or clouds, but not storms.
The Satellite info page displays me the satelite signals, and usually I have about 6-11 satelites bars and from them about 4-7 with more then 75% signal. It is very frustrating to have gps satelite signal and not have a gps fix. This is obvios a software related problem not a weak gps signal.
DOES anybody had this issue and know how to solve it? I suspect a firmware bug... but I dont really know.
    Thank you.

My new 5230 takes ages to get a GPS fix. Nokia suggested the following. It seems to have given me route not found errors but I'm still testing. I reproduce Nokia's suggestion here it case it helps you...

  • GPS "first fix" problems, workarounds and tips

    Hey folks.
My Nokia C5-00 had serious trouble getting it's GPS to work. OVI Maps would NEVER (!) get a fix, I let it search for 2hrs for 3 times, it did not work.
I went to some forums and found a solution that helped: go to options->position finding->disable all methods, restart phone, enable "internal gps" (which is really all you ever gonna need and it's free! ) and give it a go. It found my position after a pretty long time BUT at least it found it! And kept tracking it.
Then I discovered the "GPS Info" program. If you launch that program and go to options/show satelite info it seems to me the phone can get the first GPS fix faster than the OVI Maps application.
Cool thing - once you get a fix with the GPS Info app the OVI Maps gets its' automatically.
Also - launching "GPS Info", going to options->satelite info and THEN launching OVI Maps->Own Position makes OVI Maps get the fix much faster on my phone. That's what it seems to me at least.
So why does it do that? Why do I get so much better results with the GPS Info app compared to the standart OVI Maps app? Some software issues?
I did some testing - getting a first fix with OVI Maps took longer than getting a fix with GPS Info launched in the background. And I am not talking about seconds, I am talking 3-5 minutes longer.
So yeah - thoughts, ideas on that?

    1) make sure you have working internet connection in "Internet" in destination and it must be a "Priority Access point" in "Internet"
    2) Install this application. it will lock GPS very fast (http://store.ovi.com/content/208256?clickSource=search&pos=7)
    3) If this doesn’t work then you can try changing Server in Positioning settings.. The default Positioning server in supl.nokia.com.. you can try changing to supl.google.com .. I am using supl.google.com and it give gps fix very fast..  ( You can also try supl.navteq.com if you want to)
    4) Open you Maps application.. go to settings and set the Light timeout to "Always ON" and open Nokia Maps and keep somewhere safe from where it can see open sky.. (But is should be safe and should not fall down from window) .. Keep the Nokia maps application open with GPS fix for as long as possible or may be whole night.. it will drain whole battery at night with the gps fix ON.
after that you will get GPS fix very fast in three seconds (cold start)
    all th best

  • My Droid Ultra cannot get a GPS fix nor a 4G signal

For the past couple of months my Droid Ultra cannot get a GPS fix or a 4G LTE signal. I've tried the following:
    1. Downloaded and ran GPS Status to attempt to get a fix and clear the GPS data.
    2. Start up in Safe Mode.
    3. Check for Software Updates.
    4. Re-seated SIM card.
Before I'm forced to do a full factory reset (not even sure that will fix it), is there anything else I can do to see how to get either or both of these functions working again? Thanks!

Thanks for the swift reply Ruth!
I don't recall any major changes a couple of months ago.
I checked Network Mode and it was set to "Global". I switched it over to LTE/CDMA but still only get 3G.
The GPS issue seems to affect all apps that use it. I initially noticed the problem using the navigation tool on Maps (by Google). I've also been able to get a fix using Waze, GPS Test and GPS Status & Toolbox.
In Settings>Location I have set to ON and the following
    E911 Only
    Mode: High accuracy
    Location Services: Google Location Reporting

  • With iOS no GPS-Fix

After updating my 3GS from 3.1.3 to 4.0, i don't get no more gps fix. What's up?

I'm getting very interested in GPS problems across the iPhone range. Ive got a 3GS and the GPS satellite fix stopped working completely recently. A fix identified using jailbreak and an ssh terminal tells me a good proportion of these problems are with locationd, the gps process in the iPhone, or more accurately, I think that it's possible for some of the data this process uses to become corrupted; the "fix" involves stopping the process and deleting the data it uses. On restart, locations is forced to rebuild the data, and everything then works.
I suspect this is true across the iPhone range - and worse, I think that the backup function in iTunes actually backs up the bad data. Thus, when you restore from backup, you actually put the problem back in! Either that, or GPS cache data isnt deleted when the iphone is restored.
What we need is an option in iTunes, or the iPhone settings, to clear GPS ephemeris and related data down and restart locationd: this will save apple a fortune in support at genius bars, as I reckon everyone who is getting a replacement is just getting a reblanked refurbished iPhone with no hardware fixes - they could be turning them around in the back of the stores!
We need to get some group pressure together to get an answer out of apple on this really - they do seem to have an approach which has much in common with the way the UK banks were dealing with overdraft fees - if you complained, they refunded just to keep you quiet and make sure you didn't shout. If this issue is an underlying gps driver or application demon issue, they should give us a way to work around the issue.

  • E66 no GPS fix

    Hi there
When I first got my E66 it would get a GPS fix within a few seconds if I was in an open outdoor area; now I get bored waiting for it to find a single satellite. My licence for turn-based navigation has expired, but it should still find a GPS fix, shouldn't it? I seem to remember having a similar problem some time ago when I changed SIM cards before transferring my Maps licence to the new SIM. I've tried doing a hard reset on the phone, updating to the latest firmware and installing the latest version of Maps.
Anyone got any ideas, comments, links etc.?

  • No more fast GPS fix with 5800 XM v40.0.005 using ...

    Hi to all,
I'm so diappointed to have losen one of the best strength of my nokia 5800 XM (fast GPS fix thanks to A-GPS function).
Indeed, it's now inconceivable to hope a GPS fix before 5 or 10 minutes while staying at the same place. Thus, we lose all the interest of the GPS driving through a city !!!!
I tried soft and hard reset but nothing seems to be helpful, i'm now convinced the problem is due to the firmware (v40.0.005 but I already had this problem in v31.0.101).
Unfortunately the new Ovi Maps version didn't either solve the problem...
Could you give your feedbacks on the problem or explain me how the problem might be resolved ?
    Thanks to all

As you already had the problem best guess
would be a hardware problem  rather than  firmware .
Take phone to a Nokia Care Centre   or you could try wiping the phone and memory card and starting from a clean install .

  • Re: GPS connection problem AT100

I have a Tablet AT100-100 , which i just bought. I seem to have trouble connecting with through GPS. I have activated GPS as per the manual instructions but still cannot connect with GPS. I have tried to connect on google maps and could connect via wifi but when i deactivate wifi , i cannot connect through GPS only. Is there anything i can do to activate the GPS or is it a hardware problem?

    Hi toshibakias,
personally I own a AT200 so I may not be a perfect fit for your question.
I am wondering if you confuse GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) with GPS (Global Positioning System) here. GPRS can be used (roughly like WiFi) on some devices to get a connection for transferring data. GPRS is not a feature of the AT100 (or AT200) but of many phones.
But if you mean a GPS "fix" with the term "connection", then I hope you get it to work with the following steps.
    #1
I recommend installing the App "GPS Status" for best transparency. In that app you can see if GPS is basically enabled and a count how many satellites are currently in view (+ reception quality). Additionally you have the possibility to trigger a download of AGPS Data (if a WiFi/Internet connection is in reach) which may speed up the first fix.
    #2
    Get outside.
GPS (mostly) works only under clear sky. Avoid High Buildings which can shield the reception of GPS Satellites. The number of satellites in view in the App "GPS Status" should increase now.
    #3
    Be patient.
Getting the position (=fix) can take several minutes. Especially if the GPS receiver is used for the first time ever or the position has substantially changed since the last use a first fix can take up to 20-30 minutes. Usually it should take around 5 minutes if the GPS reception is good and you maintain a roughly steady position.
If you got the GPS "fix" once, future GPS fixes might be faster. Also the GPS position might (!) be still available when entering a building (close to windows at least).

  • My location gps fix?

    hi
just got a nokia c7 , im having troublr getting a gps fix when going on my location.
a few times its work but im really confused on what i do when it comes up asking for me to define a network connection?
do i click yes or no ,if i click yes it has the option of using web'n'walk but do i need to use my t-mobile internet.
    i thought it uses gps???
can anyone help me on this
    thankyou

Firstly I need to know whether you are on a generous data plan and don't mind associated cost of downloading a few kb's of data frequently or want to stop it although this can have a detrimental effect on how long it takes to lock on to position.
If you go to Menu > Settings > Application settings > Positioning > Positioning methods - if you want no data or no cost if applicable only ENABLE "Integrated GPS" as positional method.
It is the "Assisted GPS" feature that requires a network access point found in 'Positioning server use" which maybe Automatic, Auto. in home network, Always ask or Disabled. It would normally pick whichever network access point has highest priority in Menu > Settings > Connectivity > Settings > Destinations > Internet.

You can do one of 2 things:
    1) to wait , and reinstall the firmware again, because sometimes Nokia add language packs according to country you are using the phone from.
    2) to go to the nearest Nokia Care Center ,and ask them to install the turkey language pack.
