GPS in Europe

Hi, I'm currently living in Canada. I'm wondering if I buy an iPhone 3G and bring it to Switzerland and Italy with me if the GPS will work. I know it will have the GPS signal, but does the iPhone or Apple have maps of Europe?

I've pretty much given up on using the data mode in Europe. Today I did a test with my WiFi off and my IP reports 187MB of data so far. Now I admit this was with the IP left on during long periods of time. However, based on this, the 20MB European Plan sound almost useless for a 9 day trip.
Guess I'll just have to find some free WiFi over there. Just wondering how accurate the 187MB throughput is as reported by my IP? If I did my math correctly AND I was over in Europe today with a 20MB plan, my total bill for the day would have been $860! $25 for the first 20MB and then $5 per the additional MB's. No wonder some of the blissfully unaware IP tourists are coming back to bills into the thousands.

If you use a navigation app that has "on-boards" maps (maps included with the app) and you leave data roaming turned off, there won't be any internet charge.
Here is a TomTom app for the Iberian Peninsula: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tomtom-iberia/id326059419?mt=8
If you don't need a full-featured turn-by-turn navigator, look at an app like this: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/imapspro-barcelona/id319833494?mt=8
They are available for several major Spanish cities.

Have you checked the Nokia map application is compatible with external an GPS? That's only around £50 for a 3 year subscription to turn-by-turn, which is actually not too bad a deal compared with TomTom and Route66.
Alternatively, the two best know products are TomTom and Route66. If you're planning to use them in the UK only, then I believe (I've never tried it) that TomTom is a better product.
If you're planning to use the GPS in Europe, then (IMO) you have to go with Route66 rather than TomTom as TomTom's European bundle only includes City-to-City directions. To my mind, that's worse than useless: it helps you on the easy bits (the motorways) then gives up the minute you actually need it, namely in towns.
I have the Route66 Europe bundle and it has full coverage for the countries it includes.
Route66 works very well on my N80 and was easy to install. There are quite a few posts on here from people who've had trouble getting TomTom up and running, but once it's working I believe it does a good job.
I ordered Route66 direct from www.66.com which seemed to have the best deal at the time.Message Edited by patc on 28-Jun-200704:08 PM

  • Navigation with iPad 2

Is an Provider necessary to use tomtom app with tom-tom maps and GPS at Europe?
    ~ k.

    Thank you both;
there is just one problem (which will be solvable, I am sure):
Apple has in it's store two models, Wi-Fi, and Wi-Fi+3G,
    but none ”with GPS“.
The latter has ”assisted GPS“; is this enough? Does it mean, that there must be wifi stations near to support the navigation function?

  • Portege M750 PPM75E Windows 8 drivers - SOLUTION

    Hi,
just wanted to leave a message with the solutions I found for different applications for Portege M750.
These are the applications I use the most,
so if you need other drivers/applications just leave a reply and I'll try to find it.
    _Got working:_
Bluetooth and 3G driver and therefore the GPS ( [Toshiba Europe|http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=EU] )
Screen Buttons, except the Toshiba Assist and Presentation button.
    Both opens this: [Buttons|https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=0b5d644d977b4b3a&id=B5D644D977B4B3A%212226&sf f=1] ,
Which I find more useful then the old functions.
Installed Value Added Package, I think from here: [Go to download section|http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?modelFilter=M750-S7213&rpn=PPM75U&category=&selCategory=2756709&moi d=2266999&os=&ct=SB&selFamily=1073768662] . The one from europe site didn't worked.
    FingerPrint utility.
Control Panel -> User Accounts and Family Safety -> User Accounts and you have an option in the left side of the window for fingerprints. Installed the drivers and programs, works like a charm. Or search on google for TrueSuite
For the ctrl+al+arrow to flip the screen, I used iRotate (google it).
Still no solution for the HDD protection utility, yet.

Many Win7 drivers would work with Win 8 system.
But there are still some drivers and utilities which are not fully compatible.
Ive got a tip for you:
As far as I know the HDD protection Utility is not a model related software.
You could try to install the Win 8 HDD protection Utility released for Protg Z930
Would be really interesting to know if it works.

  • I have bought an iPod touch 4g and installed TomTom Europe app. How do I get a decent GPS signal, since the TomTom carkit doesn't do the job?

I have bought an iPod Touch 4g and installed TomTom Europe GPS app. How do I get a decent GPS signal in my car, since the TomTom car kit for Ipod Touch doesn't do the job for the ipod Touch 4g?

Your only way is if you have the version that was compatible on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.
    Also see:
Recover Older Versions of iPhone Apps After Updating — Apple News, Tips and Reviews
The bakup that iTunes makes does not included synced media like apps and music.
If you still have the one 2G with the Netflix app, delete the new NetFlix app from her computer anf then transfer iTunes purchased to the iTunes library by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
Then sync to her iPod. You may have to sign the iPod into the account that purchased it to sync it.

  • Can I use my iPhone 5 GPS' to give me direction while traveling in Europe?

Can I use my iPhone 5's GPS ( with global plan) while traveling in Europe?

Sure. I'd suggest you install a mapping application where the data is stored locally on your phone. Much faster & less data usage.

  • Hi Nokia Europe, N900 user from Hong Kong (GPS pro...

    Hi Nokia Europe,
Do you know I had purchased ~ 10 series or more # of Nokia phone in the past!!
I had used N97mini for few months and dropped it, beacuse it always hang on the startup white screen!! I never had this experience on the past Nokia phones. Most of the people is very disappointed it!!
Until now, I am using N900, like many people in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and other Asian is waiting your programmer to fix the problem on GPS / Nokia Map!! The phone is useless if the map is not accurate then S60V3-V5,,,,,,,I did contact the local Nokia Shop, hotline, support etc...etc ... Their "professional" respone is " at this moment, we don't have any bug fix and ask me to wait ,,,forever".
Since I had purchased the phone on May, it was almost 4 months, I am not sure should I wait for it?? Or should I decide never use this brand any more ......(please let us know will you do the firmware update or Map update for N900 or not? please announce it...)
I just wanna to know will Nokia will care our Asia market?
Let me summarize the N900 problem:
    - No translation(Chinese words) on Nokia Map.
    - NoT accurate locate by the GPS module /Nokia Map...
    - no driver for N900's bluetooth~
    - How come the front camera is so dark??
Why this powerful phone can't use video call...?? Unbelievable....
    Thanks
    Hong Kong People

    I understand your concern goconnect.
Currently, there's no Chinese version of the Ovi Maps I believe. Don't blame Nokia for that, they're not the one who created the Maps after all. Go to NAVTEQ* and ask them why Ovi don't they add Chinese to the application that they supply to Nokia, because they're the one who created the maps, they are the one who updates the Maps data, therefore they're the one who can make changes.
    Second ISSUE:
Click on the 2nd link so that you can report the inaccurate maps. Make sure that you have a clear view of the sky if you're using GPS only. But if you're using AGPS you should be getting accurate location but you'll have to pay a small amount for the data connection that the phone uses when it connects to the Nokia server that will ASSIST your GPS module in locating you.
    3rd ISSUE:
Do you mean the problem is with the sound of Voice Navigation that is not working when you're using Bluetooth in your car? Don't worry, it's not just you that is experiencing that same concern, based on my "personal" investigation, the problem is not with the Maps application or the phone it self. It's with the current Bluetooth Technology.
You must know that the Bluetooth Transceiver that is installed in the phone is the one responsible for converting the sound in the device to a Bluetooth friendly format so that it can be transferred. However, the sound format that the Maps Application is using is either disallowed to be converted to a Bluetooth friendly format (which I doubt will happen) or is not  recognized as an actual sound format by the current Bluetooth technology.
You may then think about why not use a sound format that the Bluetooth can encode. Please take note that current sound format take space in the memory like .mp3 or .ogg. Imagine saving sound files for each and every street names for a particular country. It will eat the available space plus it will slow down the system due to large amount of data.
    4th ISSUE:
Front camera can only be used for SKYPE VIDEO CALLS. If you'll be using it for any other thing then you'll get a very bad result.
"Why this powerful phone can't use video call...?? Unbelievable"
The answer is that not all feature can be placed into one mobile device. And yes it is very powerful but it's not a "phone" go to http://maemo.nokia.com/n900/ and look for this
"Experience the speed and raw power of the high-performance Nokia N900 mobile computer." You see? You did not purchased a phone, you have purchased "mobile computer"
Truly Nokia made a mistake by releasing poorly tested product just to catch up with other brands but I don't want you to be loosing confidence for a brand just because you haven't tried to really learn more about the product before complaining.
And if you're planning to buy a new phone, wheter Nokia or Apple or Samsung or any other brand, you must make sure that you already know about that phone first so that you will not expect too much from a phone.

  • What is the difference between copilot premium europe hd sat nav - offline gps navigation and copilot premium europe sat nav - offline gps navigation & maps

The first one has HD in the name and the other one doesn't, but they cost the same so I was wondering what is the difference between these to applications and which is better for the iPhone 5s.

There are several apps for this - Tomtom, Navigon are two that I can remember.
The GPS does not need cell signal or wi-fi signal to find your position, it uses them ( when available) to get a position more quickly.
The Maps app on iphone uses the internet to gain access to maps, so you would have to have access to the internet to use this app.
Tomtom and similar Apps store maps on the iphone and do not need a connection in order to be used for navigation.

  • How do I use GPS and Maps on my new Nokia N95?

    Hi everyone.
Apologies if my questions seem very stupid
I have read my manuals but don't understand how to use the GPS or to use maps. (FYI - I live in Australia).
-When I go to the menu, and click onto Maps, it loads up a picture of the world but nothing happens. There is a little wavey line thing in the top right corner that moves - does this mean it is searching for a position?
-Someone said everyone needs to make sure their GPS Receiver is turned on - what does this mean?
-Is there anything I need to download before I can use maps or GPS?
-Am I just supposed to go outside after clicking on maps, and wait for it to find a position?
-Do I need to download anything?
Thanks everyone. I am just so confused about how this actually works and can't seem to find any basic instructions or information.
    Thanks, Doc

    Hi doc18
Firstly if you are using v12.0.013 software on your N95 it is a lot quicker to obtain fix with A-GPS feature, although an active connection via WLAN or Network is needed. The symbol for this is a bit like two curtailed arrowheads at top right of screen.
There is an updated version of Nokia Maps 1.0 available:
    http://europe.nokia.com/A4509291
Go outside away from buildings and tress with clear view of sky. Open slider and hold phone at 45degrees, don't cover "#" key as GPS antenna beneath it. Low cloud or rain will make satellite acquisition a lot longer.
If you go to Menu > Tools > GPS data > (searching for + calculating data) > Position > Options > Satellite status
This shows any number of satellites up to five - empty rectangle = not locked on - black filled rectangle = signal acquired; you need a minimum of 3 solid bars for lock-on and triangulation to work!
If you return to using Nokia Maps application the "red cross" disappears off satellite icon bottom right of screen when locked on.
Happy to have helped forum in a small way with a Support Ratio = 37.0

  • Using US iphone 4 in Europe

Is there a way to use the camera, apps, Wifi and GPS of the iphone 4 and not have the possibility of receiving text messages and calls while overseas? I do not want to unlock the phone and get sims from other countries. Nor do I want to get international roaming from AT&T.
I've read about airplane mode (haven't gotten my iphone yet) but from what I've read that turns everything off except apps and music. I've also read that you can specifically go in and turn wifi back on. But what about GPS? I'd like to use skype (or something else) for calls and some form of maps (integrated with GPS) while in Europe.
If airplane mode is off and for some reason the phone is turned off or the battery dies, will airplane mode still be on when the phone is turned back on or will I have to remember to turn airplane mode on every time I turn the phone on?

Everything you stated can be done.
After Airplane Mode is enabled, you can turn wi-fi on and I believe Bluetooth for Bluetooth stereo headphones, but you can't turn on GPS or location services.
When Airplane mode is enabled when powering the iPhone off, it will be enabled when powering the iPhone on. I do this when flying. Turn on Airplane mode before powering my iPhone off when instructed before take-off. When powering my iPhone back on when instructed it is OK to do so, Airplane mode is enabled.

  • Is there a facility to put a GPS aerial on the N95...

I got the N95 really in order to have a neat GPS/OS map system for hill walking and a phone in one and have just been trying my N95 with some OS 1:25000 and 1:50000 maps from Viewranger (excellent mapping product, excellent service). Walking about with the phone open in your hand to maintain GPS reception is a pain - I wonder if there is the facility to have a simple wire GPS aerial like a headphone wire for FM reception so the phone could be in your pocket (except when you wanted to check the map) and the wire outside? Bluetooth would drain the battery too much, especially if GPS was running. One other option would be a case like an IPOD case that runners use, strapped to your arm to leave your hands free - perhaps those are available - anyone know the answer to these two questions?
Idea for Nokia - how about making the maps downloadable by country - for example Europe is a whopping 1.4GB and took me more than an hour to download, fortunately to my PC. To be able to download just single or multiple countries would be great.

Does this GPS receiver work with Nokia Maps? If it does, how do you get the phone to use it instead of its internal GPS receiver?
