GPS in Miix 10''

I have the 3G/GPS model of Lenovo Miix running on Windows 8.1 but it seems the Windows location utility does not work with the gps hardware (HUAWEI GNSS Sensor) at all and determines the location just based on the wifi/cellular basis. Is that so (I found this page: http://msdn.microsoft.com/cs-cz/library/windows/apps/hh464919.aspx but it seems a bit unclear to me)? How can I use the GPS offline then? The HUAWEI driver seems to be up to date and functioning, installed in November with whole OS but according to its log the last data were received end of December, although I tried to use the offline maps (local Czech Smartmaps app) later as well. What are your experiences with offline gps in miix?

Hi! I have the same problem too with Miix2. No GPS signal available allthough all setups seems to be ok. I have ordered an external GPS receiver http://www.ebay.com/itm/GlobalSat-BU-353-SiRF-III-USB-GPS-receiver-/231111114048?pt=GPS_Devices&hash... but I think it should work without that too. Who can help?

  • How to re-install GPS driver - Miix 10 (IdeaPad)?

I need help to recover from a self-inflicted wound.
I just received a refurbished IdeaPad Miix 10 (Windows 8) tablet.  I was struggling with getting my navigation software to recognize the GPS (an issue that I have now Googled and while I don't like it, I think I understand it).  In the meantime I saw advice from someone "fixed" their GPS problem by de-installing and then re-installing the GPS driver.  So I tried it.  I de-installed it and then went back to the Device Manager thinking I could click on the device and re-install the driver - but the device is no longer listed.  Then I figured I could have it re-scan and it would detect the device and ask me if I wanted to re-install - that didn't work either.  I think the driver is still on the system - I didn't delete any files - but I don't know it's name or how to install it manually.  The GPS drivers on the Lenovo won't install on my system (been there, done that).
Hoping someone can suggest a path to recovery. Thanks!

OK.  I found a program in the Windows directory that scanned for missing drivers and re-installed the driver.
Once the driver was re-installed, I found that there are TWO places you must configure sharing of location data - once at the system level (which I had configured) and once at the user level (which I had not configured).  Once I configured my user to share location data and restarted Oziexplorer, I found that it was receiving position data.

  • Lenovo Miix 2-8 GPS problem no location

None of the maps can locate me on my new Miix 2. The let windows and apps use my location is turned on?  Any solutions?

    I got it working.
I had to install the Lenovo chipset and GPS drivers.
What I don't know is if any of the Lenovo drivers are overwritten by the MS update process, which could kill the location services again.

Egal ob "Karten", "google", "MapUse", "Here Maps" usw.
Vorab schon mal vielen Dank für Tipps.
    Gruß Kai

    Hallo Kai,
hattest du schon diesen Beitrag im Support-Bereich gefunden?
    http://mobilesupport.lenovo.com/de/de/documents/ht081267
    Sebastian

  • How to turn "Auto detect hardware changes" on ? Miix 2 8

Hi guys , I always use my Lenovo Miix 2 8 with wired keyboard and mouse , yesterday I was messing around to turn WMI Provider Host off and after a few hours , when I connect my USB devices with it , it AUTO won't detect them anymore. I have to go to Device Manager , I select "Detect for harware changes" and it detects my USB devices.
This is really annoying as everytime I have to manually detect my connected devices. I might have turned any service or something off.
Please tell me who to turn that system ON again? Thanks a lot!
PS : In device manager , there is "Other Devices" with Unknow Device (and an exclaimation mark on it) .

  • Re: Miix 2 Touchscreen failure

EDIT NOTE: This post was moved to the top of the thread in order to assist us with an escalation. For all future post and comments please continue posting in this thread.
I am having an identical problem with the Miix 2 10 I just received. The Touchscreen will stop responding but a driver reset will get it back 100% of the time. Unfortunately I can easily get it to stop responding again by wailing on the OS keyboard or playing a game. This seems like a software issue (likely firmware or BIOS) but I am returning the unit and getting a new one to try and rule out hardware issues. Also, I am happy to make such a catastrophic quality control issue as costly as possible for Lenovo. Hopefully there will be drivers or firmaware posted soon to update this but in the mean time I hope they like shipping brand new hardware, free of charge, ad infinitum.
EDIT NOTE: This post was moved to the top of the thread in order to assist us with an escalation. For all future post and comments please continue posting in this thread.

Just get another Miix 2 if the current one is deffective and Lenovo is not going to fix it using SW update in timely fashion.
I did it as I loved some aspects of Miix 2 and there was no suitable alternative at the monent.
The 1st one was deffective in screen / backlight area. Screen clouding, weird patterns on back of the screen, like someone pushed a palm with spreaded fingers from the back when mounting in factory. Unacceptable.
The 2nd one was deffective in touch screen area as described in this thread. Unacceptable.
The 3rd and possibly final one is relatively ok so far. Volume rocker has issues and tends to stay in + position but that's negligible compared to previous show stopper issues.
All three tablets are affected by low volume cracking problem as pointed out in other thread. Tablets were purchased in Czech Republic. I wonder whether other batches / production series are as bad as ours. I am even tempted to say they used us as guinea pigs and sold us pre-production samples. Given the fault rate what else I could conclude?
Still, i am overly disapponted with how Lenovo treated this tablet and it's launch. By the time of launch in my country, there were no specs at Lenovo site, no data sheets, no papers, nothing, void. Pure and blatant ignorance. All retailers in my area listed tablet with incomplete or downright invalid specs, like that GPS is included (it is not!), like display is 1920x1080 (it is not), like miniHDMI is present (whereas microHDM is). I blame Lenovo for not providing those specs in time and adequate precision.
That's not all. In my area Miix 2 10" is only available without dock / keyboard. Keyboard is not even purchasible separately, still not one month after the launch. No single other accessory is purchasible as well. This is just frustrating and dissapoing.

  • Miix 2 8 wont start after pressing the power button

Hey guys,i have this problem with my miix 2  tablet that whenever i press the power button the tablet goes to sleep but does not wake up agani.i can feel the vibrate by touching the windows logo but nothing happens.then again have try for like 5 mins to wake up the tablet ...i have switched off the hibernate option by command prompt but still the problem exist! if someone knows how to fix this, please tell me!!..i have been using the tablet for like 3 months already..Also i did change the broadcom settings but still the problem remains...Thanks

I got this tablet 10 days ago and have been having the same problem. I think I solved it. It is not just the Broadcom adapter but many more (for example, Bluetooth HID device under HIDs in the device manager) that has the option of "Power Management" under the properties and there is an option called "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" (well, for Broadcom, it is under Advanced. I disabled what is known as Minimum Power Consumption). I hunted for all devices with this power management option and disabled in all of them (Well, the tablet might become more power hungry; I did not do this for the GPS). Now for almost a day, my tablet wakes up whenever I press and release the window button.

“Error while downloading” message on E71 with updated GPS USA Maps
I’m sure I’m not the only one having this problem but I recently updated my maps on my Straight Talk Nokia E71. The phone says I have map download V 3.03 10wk bo4 Mw Open GL LM MN, Map version 0.1.25.114.and I’m using Nokia Ovi Suite 2.2.1.23. After I installed V3.03, I installed it and download the 1.46GB USA map file and the three turn by turn files. But when I first started the GPS app I started getting the following error “Error while downloading”(This is on phone only)
I have tried to factory reset the phone, re-format the 8GB memory card, remove City data and GF files and even unloaded OVI Suite and reload it. But every time I select GPS app and start to find places or my position, I get "Error while downloading" message. I’m new to this phone and didn’t get a respectable book from Straight Talk. So I don’t know much about this phone or Nokia OS. What is this error and how do I fix it. Also when I try to sync from the phone I get the response "system error". Ovi suite on the PC says I have downloaded all the USA maps and English voice  with street names. Please help I’m at a lost.
    Computer specs
I am running Win-Vista, with a Broadband connection. 3 GB Ram, 2 gig Pentium dual core.
Tran’s flash card has plenty room left on card over 5 gigs left.
If I need to delete a file on the phone please tell me the exact file name because I’m not sure which one to remove from the apps folder.

    Welcome to the forum!
Whilst easy for me to say as keep very little data on device, I would suggest backup essential data then delete E:\cities + ,qf file followed by resetting device to "Out of box" state by keying in #7370# then 12345 (default Nokia lock code unless altered by yourself). At this point you would need to open OVI Maps application on device to re-initialise application and re-define necessary folder structure on memory card for device to be recognised by OVI Suite > Maps to re-download your regional mapping.

  • Network based and a-gps, data use tests

i was trying to find this kind of info, but only found others asking.
i hope this is useful info for others, especially while roaming.
skip to the bottom for conclusion,
this is the process i took:
    i called nokia tech support,
    their phone support his horrible,
the people on the phone don't actually know anything, and have to look up everything you ask them.
    they were the worst.
    i emailed nokia tech support.
    my message was:
"i would like to know the difference between assisted gps positioning, and network based positioning. these are 2 of the 4 options on my nokia e66 for positioning methods. i would like to know if network based positioning uses internet data from my service provider to obtain my gps position. i am especially concerned with this function while i'm roaming internationally, as i do not want to be charged for roaming data use."
in about half hour they responded w/ an answer, and then 45 min after that someone else responded w/ an answer.
the first response, minus the hello's etc. was:
"In response to your email, Assisted GPS and Network Based positioning methods generate costs related to data traffic so you will be charged for data use. Only "normal" GPS and Bluetooth GPS do not generate additional costs related to data traffic.
Normal GPS is quite slow and does not work indoors. Therefore, it is recommended to enable at least A-GPS to get a faster position outdoors.
Network based and Wi-Fi positioning also allow you to update your position inside buildings, but they cannot be used for navigation."
    the 2nd response was:
"In response to your inquiry, the difference between Assisted GPS positioning (A-GPS) and Network based positioning is that,  A-GPS uses satellites while Network based positioning is based on information of your cellular network environment. It allows you to update your position inside buildings, but they cannot be used for navigation. Both positioning methods generate costs related to data traffic (unless you have configured the device to use Wi-Fi connection to make the internet connection). The cost may vary while you are on roaming. Kindly contact the service provider for information about data transmission costs."
i can also respond w/ more questions, but instead did some tests, starting with sitting home, indoors, and eventualy moving to a window w/ lots of sky.
    test 1:
    i enabled:
    integrated gps
    network based
    assisted gps
    opened maps,
    set maps to be offline,
set default internet access point to my home wlan network,
    closed maps,
cleared all counters and the log on the phone's communication log.
    opened maps
there is a pink circle around the area i may be in,
the icon that would show gps satellite strength, changes to show the cell phone antenna icon.
but the packet data counter is sending/receiving a total of around 3-8kb immediately, and over the course of time, it keeps adding up, every 1-2 minutes, and it is shown as packet data to/from the access point "at&t internet"
over the course of ten minutes, it's been about 43kb.
and i can tell on the phone's home screen that the packet data connection becomes active when it does.
the maps kb indicator still says 0.0kb, with a line through the double arrow packet data symbol.
    test 2:
    now i exited maps,
    cleared the counters and logs
    i turned off a-gps.
enabled only integrated gps and network based.
    i open maps,
the same thing is happening as with the assisted gps on, except i connected to my home wlan once, in the middle of connecting to at&t internet 10 or so times.
everything else is happening the same.
    test 3:
    i exited maps,
    cleared the counters and logs.
    enabled only integrated gps.
i open maps, and there is no evidence of packet data connection, or wlan connection.
nothing is showing up in the logs or packet counters, and there is no pink circle around where i may be.
if i set maps to go online, w/ my wlan as the access point, or at&t internet, their respective icons show up on maps, as well as the phone's home screen.
the phone's log show respective connections are made but w/ 0.0kb, and the phone's packet counter, as well as the maps kb usage, say 0.0kb.
    test 4:
set maps to offline, w/ my wlan as access point.
    exited maps,
turned phone off for a bit to test gps from cold start.
    turned on phone,
    cleared counters/logs,
enabled only assisted gps and integrated gps.
open maps, there's no pink circle around where i may be, just the red dot of where it thought i last was.
there's about 4-5kb of data transfer,
then i bring the phone to the window where there's a lot of clear sky, and my location is found pretty fast.
i know that w/o assisted gps, w/ only integrated gps, it takes a while to get the gps signals.
i went back and forth to/from the window, and there was packet data use again only once more, not continuously like w/ network based positioning.
    so to conclude my tests,
setting the maps to be offline, still uses a-gps and network based positioning.
network based uses a more data, continuously,
which is the opposite of what i thought, i thought a-gps would use more, so i was using network based on and a-gps off while in canada. whoops.
using assisted gps uses about 5-10kb, which, when roaming, according to at&t, they charge 1.95cents/kb.
might be worthwhile for getting a quick gps signal, nothing worse than waiting forever for it to connect.
the only way to be completely clear of data use is disable network based and assisted gps, or set the phone to offline mode.

A-GPS: This uses information from cell network to get a rough idea of where you are. It then uses this information to figure out which satellites to look for. Result is a faster satellite lock. So A-GPS uses a few kB of data to get an initial position, but navigation is done using GPS satellites, which does not require ANY data connection.
Network based: This uses information from the cell network to plot the current position when GPS satellite signal is not available, ie indoors, in a tunnel, etc. Position info derived from the cell network is not as accurate as that from GPS satellites, but serves as a stopgap until GPS signal can be re-acquired. Network based positioning used your data connection EACH TIME the satellite lock is lost. So the amount of data used is dependent on the quality of access you have to the GPS satellites. If you don't lose the connection to the GPS satellites, then you won't use any data.
The ‘offline’ option within the Nokia Maps app only refers to street, POI, etc searches, NOT to A-GPS, Network based positioning or to connecting with the GPS satellites.
If you want to navigate without using ANY data connection, set A-GPS off AND set Network based positioning off AND set the Internet option in Nokia Maps to Offline. Do this and you will not use any of your data connection allowance when navigating. There is no need to put the phone into flight mode.
If I've helped you, you can thank me by clicking the green 'kudos' star on my post. Cheers.

  • IPhone 6 location services/gps not working

Anyone else have an issue with iPhone 6 location services/gps not working? I have had it happen to me twice where it stopped working for good 7 or 8 hours and then all of sudden it starts working again. For example, directions don't work, every time I open Apple Maps it will say "Cannot determine location", then when I press the location icon on the bottom left, it will try to search again and have an approximate location but not exact, where as the iPad that I have right next to it is able to pin point the exact location. Sometimes the location circle is pulsing blue sometimes its gray. If I am driving and have tracking on it won't track, and so on.  I have tried to setup the phone as new without restoring the backup, when it stopped working with no luck, it still didn't work. I went and restore it back from backup and few hours later it started to work again. This has happened twice now since I got the phone last Friday.

Check your "Privacy" settings on your iPhone see what apps are using your location.

  • GPS issue please help me please

    Hi guys,
Well i know there are several forms for GPS issue but i cant find the right one for me...Please guys help me if u can.
I have N95 8 GB with GPS activated for Middle East Dubai....
Now the issue is this that before i was used to connect very quickly say about 10 minutes but right now i mean as of last couple of weeks its taking hell of time indeed not connecting at all...I place my mobile and my frnds mobile at same place but mine is not connecting at all...his mobile connects like in minute or so....please can u guys help me...my mobile is rarely used for 3 months...
Do i need to change some settings....If satellite is not available it sudnt connect to my frnds same mobile v20....but it connects to him not to mine....

First thing you do is to run GPS Data in connectivity and see if the phone achieves GPS lock any faster than now.
Secondly, run Nokia Maps, Goto Options>About and tell us the version you have. It should be accross the top of the screen.

  • How do I use my iPhone 4s to set GPS co-ordinates to use at a later date?

I'm wanting to go to an aread in the bush - enter the GPS co-ordinates in my iPhone 4s and then be able to go back to the same place at a later date. How do I go about it.  I have no idea if I even have a GPS on my iPhone 4s.

There is a built in GPS and map function that provides basic navigation using Google Maps. It's hard to miss right there on the home screen. However, it is maunal; you have to tap "next" when you reach each waypoint, and it does not provide spoken directions. It also downloads maps in real time, so it can be slow if you have a slow data connection, and it uses a lot of data if you are on a limited data plan. It is excellent for walking and public transportation, less useful in a vehicle unless you have a navigator sitting in the car.
There are several commercial GPS apps that you can buy from the App Store, but no free ones. Just search the App Store for "GPS".
