If i use the phone (5800) in offline mode Can i use maps and GPS?

Yes you can use the GPS but not A-GPS as that requires network connection.

  • GPS never offline on my Nokia C7.

    Hi,
GPS on my Nokia C7 asks an internet connection each time I want to use the GPS. I want to use it OFFLINE but for the moment, it is always ONLINE.
I've an internet package at Bouygues Telecom.
My settings for GPS (Menu->Parameters->Positionning) are:
    GPS assisted: untick
    GPS integrated: tick
    Bluetooth GPS: untick
    WI-FI/Network: tick
    Defined by network: tick
A friend has N97 and she can use its GPS offline: she has never request for an internet connection.
I live in France and it is to use it in France and abroad also.
Abroad, I must pay for an internet connection in more.
    Thanks for your help
    Stephanie

..but what you have mentioned may be the selections you get on the main display..At the bottom do you see any tab for Settings or Options or something like that.. (in place of Menu and Back.. as you see in the screenshot posted by aspergerguy..). If so.. select it to see whether you get it...
No worries, it was my bad using screenshot from N8 a similar Symbian^3 which has possibly caused confusion here, as on this device (N8) this option appears top right of screen; just trying to eliminate all possible reasons for application using network access here.

  • Disappointed with Nokia N8 and Belle

I have been using Nokia phones since 2000 and I was recommending it to all my friends. The last one I bought- Nokia N8 has disappointed me.
The  big + is the integrated GPS and offline maps. Excellent camera...
     Why disappointed:
     Price I paid- $ 450+.
    Since May 2011:
A big grayish spot appeared on the display after 2 weeks. Visible only when the phone is off.It does not bother me but still this phone is $450.... Now I can not cell it.
USB port broke after 2-3 months. Replaced- 3 days at Nokia Care point in NYC.
Integrated GPS stopped working after Anna update- 3 daysX 2- 3 hours online chat with Nokia Care and 10 days repair. The internal part of the phone was replaced. The display is still the same.
     Belle- improved Anna, but..
Battery life has been enormously reduced. Practically if you want long battery life- turn the phone off.
Power savings mode option has moved to the hard button on the top. Difficult to access because of the protector.
Google Maps is not working. (Nokia maps is OK but GM has easy access to public transit directions and has more business location info) Now Nokia Public Transit app is a step forward, but its still separate app.
     Many Apps are not compatible.
No short cut for positioning method directly from maps/ driving. You have to dig thru the phone's settings.
Anna's clock small widget with date is no more available.
No shortcut to the specific mailbox.
     Text messaging is confusing.
     Data log history is unavailable.
No "vibration only"  profile allowed when the phone is on power savings mode.
Anna and Symb had an option to choose when and how to connect a single application to the internet. (internet- always ask) Now with Belle its more complicated.
No shortcuts to various settings- dig, dig, digg....
Quick Office Pro (sold in Nokia Store) does not read .doc files anymore with Belle.
No option to add contact to group when creating it as new.
     Search widget almost never works.
     Remote lock does not work.

i totally agree with you. i cant get into half off the apps (the ones i paid for) mainly because it sends me to a link to download OVI when its downloading the file it then says its "unable to install ive done everything, thinking its the software of belle that didnt download properly.. a glitch in the software or i'd done something.. my phone it now being used as least as possible. the basics of this model (calling/contacts/messages) isnt as easy as previous..
after reading on here and many other discusion sites it seems like this model (N8)
DOES have a fault with the belle software. and needs to be sorted pronto
or at least give the option to refer back to anna.
this phone it well established to have so many hicupps!!
ive been with nokia for years think the 3310 was my first but my upgrade is due and im looing for other options - something i'd never do..

  • Does Nokia Maps need to be online to work sometime...

    Hi all,
I am very confused about the use of the free Nokia Maps applications. I have an N97 mini, and I was using the maps application throughout Egypt last week.
I had the settings placed "offline", and the application would open and would work fine, but whenever I did a search for a place, most times it would not find the place. Even common street names or popular tourist sites, could not be found offline. I then changed the settings to "online", and when I would do the same searches, it now would fine the places and streets.
However, when I checked my mobile phone provider account, using the "online" mode was using up all my phone credit.
So I am confused about whether I must be online to use the Nokia Maps application to find places, or should it work offline. What is the difference? And why does Nokia tell us its free, if in fact it uses up my phone account's data to find places that should already be in the maps application?
So I have 3 main questions I am unsure about:
    1. Do i need to be online to search for some places, as it seems that offline it does not find all places?
    2. If I am online, should it be charging me, or should it still be free?
    3. When I update the maps, as I did, should that not include all the places on the maps that I find in online mode? Or are some places only found if I an online?
I must say we had so many problems using the maps application throughout Egypt- I do not recommend it to anyone for this place. It got us lost so many times, and once we ended up in some isolated poverty stricken town near the Pyramids of Sakkara- it was hell getting back! And it only worked when I went into online mode, and used up all my phone credit.

  • Using iPhone in France

I will be going to France later this year and wanted to be able to use GPS and offline maps on the iPhone for navigation on streets and the Metro while walking around (I have a 3G ATT iPad, but that is too bulky to carry around while walking).
I do not plan to use the iPhone for making phone calls while in France.
Given my interest mainly in GPS and navigation in France and not in making phone calls there, does it matter whether I purchase the iPhone from ATT or Verizon. I know the Verizon 3G does not work in France, but not sure if that is relevant to my plans.
I would prefer Verizon as that is my provider now.
    Thanks for your advice.

There is no CDMA service at all in Europe, so a Verizon iPhone won't work as a phone. You can, however still use WiFi & GPS. Just make sure all of the mapping data is pre-loaded on your phone.

  • App Vendor Systematically Deletes Negative Reviews ...

RIM App World Folks: skip down to "How can RIM address this issue?" for the short version.
It seems purchasers of apps have one opportunity to post a review, and vendors seem to have a means to delete "offensive" reviews. It's obvious that these mechanisms are intended to prevent users from misusing the review process and avoid offensive content in reviews - but they also seem to place 100% trust (and all of the power) in the app vendor's hands.
In my particular case I looked at the review for "Canada On-Device GPS Map - Offline Map" - the description led me to believe that this app did not need an internet connection and had a basemap for canada. I was expecting map functionality similar to a low cost automotive GPS. There was only one review (5-stars) - so I took a $10 chance - and lost.
Yes, the app has a basemap of Canada (bitmap only) - down to the level of a province-wide roadmap. To get any detail usable for navigation you need a live internet connection and the app works like Bing Maps, with limited offline cache. I was disappointed that the app wasn's what I was led to expect ...
So I posted a very polite (one star) review saying basically the same as above - and within seconds my review vansihed and only the original 5-star review remained.
I have since discovered that this vendor (SkyLab Mobile Systems) seems to have a reputation for deleting negative reviews, and as unetical (or possibly fraudulent) as that is, I believe RIM has an obligation to address the situation.
How can RIM address this issue?
    a) List the total number of reviews posted for each app
    b) List the total number (or %) of those reviews deleted by the vendor
With this information a consumer can see if a vendor is systematically deleting a significant portion of their reviews. It is quite likely that most vendors will have to delete some offensive reviews, but if the % is too high it still serves as a warning to consumers ...

Same thing wih Paper Toss by Erlemann. This vendor has deleted every negative review for a product that is a joke compared to the android version (free). I was suprised to learn here that vendors can delete negative reviews. With no access to customer service (rim) and what amounts to false advertising with vendors manipulating reviews, buying any unknown app without a trial version is a gamble. I imagine the idea is to keep the developers happy; seems they'd want to keep customers happy too. Who needs developers if buyers can't trust the source and buy somewhere else (apple, android...)?I guess the upside is that it only cost me $1 to learn this. I like the playbook; not too fond of rim so far though.

  • No Carrier / No SIM

Can the Z10 be used without a phone carrier. Some example:
    1) Google voice over WIFI
    2) Download maps and use GPS while offline (Replace Garmin GPS)
    3) Music, etc (replace IPOD
What non-obvious limitations are there when there is no telephone carrier associated with the phone?
Basically I want to understand if it can be used to replace an old IPOD and handheld GPS as well as be used like  a small WIFI only tablet.

Yes. All those will work with no carrier and the proper app installed. I know there's an offline GPS app, but I honestly don't recall the name. Search AppWorld and you'll find it.

  • Ovi Maps Favorites

Despite the fact Ovi Maps seems to perform very well (on my 5800 latest firmware v50) during navigation, it's UI is not user-friendly and self-explaning.
Especially everything relates to favorites is not implemented in a user-friendly way.
I really cant find how to
    - add a favorites (place/route) after having done a search while NOT being connected to any GPS --> 100% offline
    - delete a favorite
I spent a lot of time trying to find a way to do this.
Also, once having done a search, how to add the housenumber to adjust the search ?
IMHO the Ovi Maps interface needs an overhaul based upon the way users use this sort of software !

I've found the solution to my problem. While I still can't sync Maps favorites by using the Sync tool under Data Transfer on my phone, I can sync by launching Ovi Maps on my phone and then using the sync option there.
However it's still silly that the Sync tool won't sync Maps favorites because of a "missing database" even though sync with Ovi Maps favorites is listed as an option there. Either remove the option or make it work, please.

  • Lumia 900 GPS doesn't work offline

I've had my Lumia 900 for about a year and a half.  At first it would get no GPS signal, like my old 5800.  After a few months it started receving signals over much--definitely not all-- of my area (I live in NYC).  It seemed usable, and I got rid of my TomTom.  Now it's back to never receiving signals, and the only way it can read my location is through WiFi (I don't have a data plan).
I have no idea what is going on, or why I now have had two Nokias that allegedly had offline GPS, but really didn't except for a few months.  Anyone have any hints as to what might be going on or what I can do?

I am not a Here Drive advocate - it is just practical experience from my Nokia N8, that goes from navigating reasonably well to almost useless when the SIM is removed. It has taken me to the place that I needed to go when I really needed it - and only had me driving in a circle once a couple of years ago, when trying to get out of an unfamiliar place. Heading the car in the general direction and ignoring the instructions for a while sorted that out.
Here Drive calculates a new solution for the remaining route automatically when the driver decides that he knows better. It does not do simple u-turn corrections back to the original route, unless another solution is impossible, it's a new solution to the destination. If the telemetry still works as it used to, then the driver's alternative solutions goes back to the mothership for analyzing and future improvements of the routing algorithms.
Shortest or fastest route calculation works for me in Denmark.
If a cheap Ebay GPS works better for you, then the solution is simple.
    Best regards,
    Hans

  • Offline GPS/maps

Does anyone know of any really good offline GPS/maps for traveling to another country? I'll be heading to Rome, Spain, Monaco, Tunisia and Italy next week and Beijing, China in May and I really need some good apps that will help me with directions and places. I'll need an offline GPS for when driving (doesn't have to be that accurate because I know iPhone can't replace an actual GPS), and a map showing public transit system and major places in those countries; other features would be nice too. The app has to be offline because obviously there's no connection outside.
    Thanks!

GPS access does not equal turn by turn directions. Turn by turn directions can be included with a GPS device, but if a GPS device does not include turn by turn directions does not mean it isn't an actual GPS device or does not have a GPS reciever. These are not one in the same. Firmware update 3.0 will support an app that provides turn by turn directions using the iPhone's GPS reciever with maps data stored locally on the iPhone.
Unless you can find an app via the app store that includes the map data you will be needing, you will be out of luck.

  • N8 Offline GPS Initial Lock Problem

    Hi
Hope I'm posting on the right board, I'm new to this!.
I've just got a unlocked N8 after my 10 year old unlocked 5100 decided to have a moment!.
It's running Belle Software Version 111.040.1511
From what i understand off the internet.
The nokia N8 has a good internal GPS and should be able to get a lock without assistance.
You use internal GPS to get a more precise fix.
There are 24 non stationary satellites orbiting the planet.
There should be 5 satellites visible from any point on the globe.
I have to receive a sequential stream of data from 3 satellites in line.
I think I must be doing something wrong because I can't get a lock.
    01. Updated ovi maps (V3.08) via nokia suite
    02. Downloaded england map to phone via nokia suite
    03. Wlan off
    04. Integrated gps only
    05. Offline (no sim inserted)
    06. Turned on maps and left on a table outside in cornwall for 2 hours with a clear view of the sky & not a cloud to be seen
    07. Installed Legpsdata2 to try to see if satellites were about - went to satalite status (system) - left outside on a cloudy day for 1 hour (can legpsdata get a lock by itself?)
    08. Turned wlan on by accident whilst in maps and got placed in berlin in seconds, brilliant but I'm in England!
    09. Spent more hours trawling the internet for an answer
    10. Posted here
Maybe the problem is the same as some internet companies have and the GPS thinks cornwall is not part of England?.
could someone give me a step by step guide to set up gps as I can't find one on the internet!.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Grant.

    @Vacant_G
Almost certainly cause of problem is (05) no SIM inserted, irrespective of whether you don't intend using Assisted GPS positional method requiring a network connection.
Surprised that you are runing v3.08 still as Nokia Maps Suite 2.0 uses v3.09:http://store.ovi.com/content/265481
As regards (08) it is a little joke from the maps developers in Berlin that it always defaults here when application started for first time before it has any GPS ephemeris data to work with.
