GPS in the BackCountry

I am going backpacking in a few weeks, does the GPS function work properly far away from cell service and does anyone have a recommendation for a solar battery charger?

It should with the appropriate GPS app (not Maps since it requires data) BUT some have reported otherwise, i.e. no gps fix when far away from cellular service for a period of time.
IMO, if you need a GPS to navigate in the backcountry, I would not trust an iPhone to do it. In addition to potential satellite fix problems, you've got battery life and ruggedness to worry about. You're better off with a dedicated outdoor GPS for <$100.

  • What is "Assisted GPS" on the iPad and how does it work?

What is "Assisted GPS" on the iPad and how does it work?

I purchased the iPad mini Wi-Fi & Cell because it has GPS. OK, it is assisted GPS but the GPS works very well as stand alone. I got the iPad mini for use in flight, so I dont even have a sim card in it. The GPS works perfectly in flight under all conditions. I have cross checked it against typical approved aircraft installations and it is very accurate at all times. I use it in Wi-Fi mode on the ground when updating my aviation database, when planning a flight, or similar circumstances. The primary advantage of A-GPS is quick location reading when first turned on, when on the ground where the GPS satellites signal may be of reduced quality. At 10,000 feet plus, it is a stand alone GPS. I have frequently turned the iPad off in flight for periods of time and when powering up, it gave me accurate positioning in a few seconds, never exceeded 10 seconds. I have also tested my iPad on the ground, using the aviation maps, and the GPS works perfectly also.
It remains possible that there is some feature that enhances the GPS when on the ground, even if there is no sim card in the iPad. But I doubt that any of these would work in an aircraft at high altutide. Nonetheless, I would appreciate knowing more about this.

  • Can I use my Ipad 3 as a GPS in the car?

I have 3/4g and was wondering if I could get step by step (and ideally "voice") directions via GPS in the car?

The problems with the Apple Maps app were overblown. Yes, there were some isolated accuracy and direction issues when it was released, but Apple has made a lot of improvement since then. I use it on my iPhone all the time and have yet had problems. It doesn't always choose the same route I would have chosen, but that's with all navigation apps.

  • Hi, am I right in thinking that the only iPads with a built in GPS are the cellular models not the wifi only ones?

hi, am I right in thinking that the only iPads with a built in GPS are the cellular models not the wifi only ones?
I am looking to purchase an iPad2 and need a built in GPS

    Mini-education:
GPS signals are separate from and completely unrelated to both the Internet and the cellular telephone network.  GPS signals come directly from the GPS satellites.  They provide signals that allow GPS receivers to calculate latitude and longitude information.  Navigation software then takes that latitude/longitude info and converts it to land mass, roads, bridges, highways, buildings, etc.
Most navigation software stores the maps right in the iPad/iPod/iPhone but a disadvantage is that the maps must be periodically updated (perhaps once every two years).  The Internet is not required to use the system but it is required to update the maps.
Some navigation software gets the maps from the Internet and requires an Internet connection to function but an advantage is that the maps are always up-to-date.
The WiFi+3G/4G iPad and the iPhone both have a GPS receiver.  The WiFi-only iPad and the iPod do not and these devices require an accessory.

  • LEDs and GPS on the BB 8900

I have a new BB 8900. The LEDs on the phone flash red and sometimes green and am not able to understand the significance of the colors. What does it mean?
Also, I am unable to get GPS on the phone and am getting the message "No data available" . How can I know the coordinates of the location where I am at? I have tried everything including trying to search from oudoors in a clear area.
Any help on these matters will be appreciated.

    Hi
The LED flashes red when you have no coverage from your provider and green when you do have a signal. You can turn this off in the options menu, its under options, screen/keyboard scroll down to LED indicator  and change it to off.
I'm not sure about the GPS, sorry

  • Where is the GPS on the 3G?

Just got the 3G and do not see any widget/app for GPS!
    Where is it?
We see the Maps, but nothing about GPS.
    What are we missing???

The maps screen may look the same, but if you tap the blue icon in the bottom left, if you are outdoors with a clear view of the sky, your exact location will show as a blue dot (not a larger blue target). That is the GPS location.
The difference is that a true GPS chip is tracking your location; not cell tower triangulation.
If by "GPS" you are thinking of a turn-by-turn GPS capability with spoken directions (like a car GPS system), that is not part of the 3G provided software.

  • Can I use offline maps with GPS on the 5C?

I am going on vacation abroad soon and my new iPhone 5C will be non-roaming because of the stupidly expensive internet data charges when out of the phone provider's home country. I will probably even pull the SIM card out to be 100% sure.
But I would still like to use it for GPS positioning when I am out walking about and then I must use off-line maps (like I have done with Google Maps on my Android phone).
Is it possible to download off-line maps to the iPhone while I am in the hotel and have a Wi-Fi connection and then the phone will use the downloaded maps when I am walking about the place outside of WiFi range?
If so, how do I set it up?

On the Android phone I have used MyTacks, which I believe is a Google app. I use version 1.1.16 currently and it is NOT able to use cached maps even though I can save maps in Google Maps for offline use while driving.
So if I use Google Maps I can see where I am now on the downloaded offline map, but there is no tracing of the walked path being done. If I use My Tracks it records the track but I cannot see it on a map until I am back in WiFi range.
I had hoped for the iPhone 5C to at least provide the possibility to use cached maps when locating my position....
What app do you suggest I use?

  • Can I use the gps on the iphone to locate the last place the phone was before the battery died?

How can I find my iphone if the battery is dead. Is there a way to find where it was when it died?

Pray to whatever superior being you believe in that it will be returned.
With a dead battery it is not possible to track it.
There is no service that stores the prior GPS locations of iDevices.  That would be a HUGE privacy invasion.
