GPS is off by 1/4 mile

The GPS on my 3Gs is off by about 1/4 mile. This problem just started about a month ago. My searches indicate that I should be able to resolve it by turning 3G off and back on but the problem exists in both 3G and E modes. How can I recalibrate it?

When you are outside in a clear area with no buildings in the way does it do the same thing after you wait a few minutes? Or does it shrink down to the blue ball on or very near your location?

  • The location of my hometown (Hysham, Montana) is off by over 50 miles ever since Apple Maps came out.  I have been reporting off and on ever since but it has never corrected.  What do I need to do to get this fixed?!

The location of Hysham in Apple Maps is off by over 50 miles and has been ever since the advent of the app.  I have gone through the motions many times to place the pin the correct location.  Unfortunately, no one at Apple seems to care if Hysham, Montana is plotted in the correct location or not.  The location displayed in Apple Maps is quite literally in the middle of nowhere.  If someone were to rely on Apple Maps to get to Hysham may very well end up marooned in the midst of muddy two track road in the summer or stuck in a snowdrift in the winter with little or no hope of expedient assistance.  Other than the reporting feature in Maps, there appears to be no other means to report mistakes and there appears to be no expedient means at Apple to filter through reports and fix the errors.  In sum, What do I have to do to get the location of Hysham fixed in Apple Maps?  Much thanks!

You have done all that you can. Apple maps depends on 3rd party map data solutions. As problems are reported, they are reported to the data providers. How and when they decide to make changes is up to them.

  • How do I change my location? What is shown is off by about 75 miles..

How do I change my location in my computer? What is shown is off by about 75 miles.

What does this web page say about your location?
    http://whatismyipaddress.com/
With a wired internet connection, the location of the IP Address that you are using is reported by your Internet Service Provider to the "IP address services" on the web. That information is used by web pages to determine your location and the send you relevant information or advertisements. If the location is "off", you might want to ask your ISP about why you are "pegged" as 75 miles from your physical location.

  • Why won't the GPS turn off?

For some reason the tiny GPS arrow on the top of the screen next to BatteryUse stays on.
I have no apps using it right now. It is just on.
It is only slightly anooying, I can live with it, but I fear it is using up the battery a lot faster.
    Any halp?

    Turn off location service.

I was also have an infinite amount of problems with GPS on the Pre until I realized that there are more options to the Location Services app (?) than I initially realized. In Location Services hit the pull down menu and you should see some more options.
Google Services came turned off by default and turning it on made a hell lot of difference in locating me. I'm guessing it uses the Google Services to give me an initial estimate based on the cell tower/wifi and then it narrows down via the typical aGPS magic.

  • Ovi Maps on E72 GPS frequently off by one to two b...

This is very frustrating and makes it impossible to use the application for any real navigation.  It will acquire what it believes to be a very precise lock, but it is typically 2 to 3 blocks away from my actual location.  Google Maps on the same phone has no issue pinning me down to where I actually am.  What gives?
Phone is an E72-2 (RM-529, NAM), running 052 firmware (latest) and latest Maps.  I have always had this issue with this phone, regardless of firmware/maps version.  I wonder if it is actually acquiring correct GPS, but their North America maps are not properly fitted to the earth.  Wouldn't surprise me, given Nokia's frequent disregard for North America

    Also happened to me....
If I don't use Integrated GPS, the location is indeed several blocks off, in the US, making the GPS useless.
On my phone, the 5800, if I get a real GPS signal, the location is accurate.   But often times I never got a satellite lock when I should of.
The internal GPS antenna was too weak for me.  So I switched to Bluetooth GPS.  I purchased a $40 dedicated GPS receiver that I paired to my phone.  So now I acquire a signal quickly and it's accurate.
I allow only the Bluetooth GPS to be checked off.   So I don't get any data charges either.  So after the initial additional $40 investment, it became free.
Not sure if your problem is identical, since you have a different phone.

  • My iPhone's GPS keeps putting me 1,300 miles from my actual location

I am having intermittent, but frequent problems with any app that uses my location showing me in Midland, TX when I actually live 1,300 miles away in Fort Wayne, IN. Is anyone else having this issue? Any suggestions on how to fix it without driving 2 hours to the Apple Store?

If a lot of pressure is being applied to the end of the cable, that will damage it over time. Does the end of the cord seem crinkled/crimped?
Might be worth getting an extension cord, plugging the charger into the cord and then putting the charger somewhere that will allow the USB cable to lay flat. That will prevent this from happening.

  • I lost my iphone, gps is off and its now switched off, can i use serial number to find it?

i lost my iphone tonite i tried to check it with icloud but it showed offline, i rang many times but the phone now is switched off, is there any possible to use serial number to locate my iphone?

For Find My iPhone to work, several things need to happen: the iPhone needs to be connected to the internet, the iPhone needs to not have been wiped. I believe it will turn on Location Services if it receives a Find My iPhone request, but I am not sure.
While the phone is off (or your software and settings are wiped), it can do nothing to help you find it.

  • GPS/Satellite issue with running apps

All of a sudden, on several different running apps I use (which use GPS/satellite to track how many miles I run), have become wildly inaccurate.  Maps of my runs show zig zagging all over the route when I really am just going in a relatively straight line.  I've had no problems for 1+ years of using the app in the same areas, so I don't think it's because of the signal, also, other people I am with using the same app don't have the same problem.  It has also occurred on multiple (at least 3) different apps, so it's not just specific to one app.  I don't have problems with it finding my location when I start the app, it's just along the route that it goes bonkers.  I also don't seem to have any location/gps problems with any map-related apps.  This has been driving me nuts and the app developers are no help.  Please help me, I'll try anything!!!

Toggle location service off and on by going settings>privacy>Location services. If that doesn't fix the problem reset network settings or reset all settings.

  • Gps not working properly after 3.0 update

I have an unlcoked iPhone with version 3.0. Before I installed the update to the new version my gps worked great. It was very accurate and would follow along when traveling. Ever since I applied the update the gps is way off by 20-30 miles and it will no longer follow while traveling. Was just curious as to if anyone else is experiencing the same issues or if a update or fix was possible. Thanks for the help

First connect your your device with iTunes.
You can try to delete your backup data for you iPhone/iPod touch. The backups are placed in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/.
If you can identify the last backup it worded with notes you can delete all your later backup. Then it should work again.
Or you can find the backup data for notes in the *.mdinfo and *.mddata file. The application identifier should be something like com.apple.notes. Just search for that string in each *.mdinfo file. Than delete these files.
In iTunes right-click (or Control-click) the device, and choose Restore from Backup. Then everything should work fine again.

  • HELP! how can i find my lost 8530 using GPS?

not sure if it was stolen, or just not returned yet but it seems to be turned off. Any way to find it??

    Hello Elka!
    Welcome to the Community
We're sorry for what happened to your phone. I don't think GPS can help you find the phone because if you called your carrier to report it lost or stolen, it must have been suspended already. IF it's not been suspended, it must have been turned OFF by the founder.
Blackberry Curve 8530 only has A-GPS, it means Assisted GPS so it may only be assisted by the Carrier Network find its nearest Cell Tower. If the phone is suspended or turned OFF, it will not work because it needs a Mobile Network to connect to. And if there's an app such as Blackberry Protect intalled on the phone, it may help you find the location but not the exact location as it only has A-GPS functionality. And for further details about Cell Tower's coverage. Rural Cell Towers have a larger radius compared to an Urban Cell Towers so if it was brought to a Rural area, using A-GPS might give you a place miles away from the exact location of the phone.
Hope the information above has helped in a way.
    Ron

  • Find my iPad way far off!

Before going on vacation I tested the find my iPad app.   Instead of telling me it's at my house it puts it a few houses down the street in my neighbors backyard.  How would I ever find it if it's off almost 1/4 mile ?

Sounds like you have a WiFi-only unit.  Your results are normal.  Give it some time (a year, no joke) and it'll figure out where you are, at least within fifty yards.
Even with pin-point accuracy (the G3 unit with a GPS chip) the "Find my..." function is pretty much useless if the device is in the hands of a thief.  All that is necessary is for the thief to connect to any computer with iTunes and "Restore as new."
The only real protection you have is with the personal information on the device rather than the physical device itself.  This requires action before the device is lost/stolen.  If the device has significant personal informtion, it should have a strong 8-digit (or longer) password AND be configured for automatic wipe in the event of ten consecutive incorrect password entries.

  • Bug in Preview's Exif viewer (inverted GPS coordinates)?

    Hi,
I've been scratching my head quite a lot over this one...
I'm finalizing an application that gets your GPS coordinates off your Google Latitude history and uses them to geotag your pictures. The idea is to make it easier to use the "Places" functionality of iPhoto, Picasa, etc...
Anyway, I cannot explain why Preview seems to display an incorrect longitude (it drops the "-" sign which places a California picture somewhere in China...) when Exiftool, Picasa and, yes, even iPhoto seem to get it right.
I know some of you will probably think I'm looking at 2 different pictures (I probably would think the same if I were you) but I've double, triple checked. In fact a simple "Show in finder" from iPhoto or Picasa will bring up the picture for me to double-click.
    Anyway, see for yourself:
    The picture in question
    Exiftool
    in iPhoto
    in Picasa
    in Preview
    Any feedback appreciated.

    tbertran wrote:
However, that would not explainwhy the very complete exiftool output is spotless (as far as I can tell). IPhoto and Picasa also get it right...
That's all well and good. But even if you have smoking-gun evidence that there is a bug in Preview (and it isn't a show-stopping bug either), it will be months, if not years until said bug is fixed. Until then, your output will not work in Preview. So, in any case, you are going to have to modify your code to produce output that Preview can read. Other applications are able to produce such files that Preview can understand. What is the difference?
My advice is to continue working with other tools to generate identical files with identical tags. Then find the difference in output between the other tool and yours. That should identify where the bug lies.

  • Can anyone confirm that the GPS function works at all on the 4620L?

Our small team of IT and GIS professionals have been trying all week to get the NMEA GPS data off of the Jetpack 4620L.  We would like to use this data to track the location of our Police Officers in the field for their safety. We have ESRI mapping software which can handle the reading and display.

According to this document, there is both a separate GPS and a "tower triangulation" GPS over wifi

We have so far not been able to get coordinates from either.  Nor have been able to find any evidence of the function working for anyone.  We'll have to stop trying unless we can find evidence the function works per the guidebooks instructions for somebody.

Actually, I have a friend that uses the GPS feature without an issue.  Of course, his system is not as sophisticated as yours I'm sure.
However, he uses it all the time as he travels all over and loves it.  He just enabled it in the Advanced section and followed the directions to connect it to the tracker and that was it.
Not sure if you noticed the port number in the section where this is enabled but it may be something to look into.  I don't know much about GPS but thought I would share that.
