GPS Locaion diService. BLOCKs MapQuest: MapCrap

Bought 2 PREs in Aug. Many good points.  But Phone & Location BAD.
1) The EULA for Google Maps gagged me.  Gaagle wants RIGHT to tack users continuously.  NO!  Never used.  Hell, SPRINT helps unwarranted police. http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/12/cell_phone_surveillance_unpacking_the_legal_issues...
2) SPRINT Nav also demands Location disService. I need a MAP of streets near my destination.  Only dummiess need to be told where to drive. GPS OFF my Phone!  The nice browser made MapQuest.com the answer.
3) ~WebOS 1.3 started BLOCKING MapQuest!    PRE gives tiny msg "Error processing error". WTF!?
Softwhere is PREmature.

  • Can invisishield block reception?

My wife and I each have an iphone. Her iphone has a standard front screen protecter and a rubber stretch-on, wrap-around rubber case on the back and sides. Mine has an invisishield scratch protector on the front and back.
While driving down the road today, I held both phones next to each other and opened the maps application. My iphone gps reception was not as accurate, as it had the wider, flashing circle around my location and was frequently unresponsive and seemed to lose reception. My wife's iphone showed no circle around our location, was more accurate and did not seem to lose reception.
Could the invisishield be interfering with reception on my iphone? Are there any metallic components in the invisishield or anything else about it that might interfere with reception?
Could my device just not be as strong reception-wise?
I'm considering removing the back part of the invisishield just to compare the before and after affect.
    Thanks,
    doug

It seems very unlikely. I doubt there are any heavy metals or leads in it. GPS can be blocked by car roofs or it could be just small differences in manafacturing or perhaps the network settings in the phone are not configured correctly. You might consider some general troubleshooitng like iPhone > Settings > General > Reset > reset network settings although you would have to re-pair bluetooth devices and retype wifi password. also try the two button reset for 10 seconds

  • FM transmitter blocks GPS?

    Hi
I recently bought an FM transmitter/charger for my 3GS. Works fine in car until I try to use GPS for my navigation app. GPS will not fix location until FM transmitter is unplugged (which means the charger has to be unplugged as well.
Does the use of an FM transmitter always block the iPhone's GPS capability, or is it just the particular version I have bought (it's one of those that plugs directly into the foot of the iPhone, charges through a mini-USB socket)? If anyone out there is successfully using an FM tramsmitter with iPhone charger and GPS simultaneously in-car, what kit are you using?
    Thanks

I've had similar issues with my Flexpod Car Mount unit, though not as severe as you describe. I just tend to get frequent hiccups in signal, but it usually catches up to itself. I think it's an inherent issue with transmitters and the FM range interfering with location services.

  • Looking for GPS wth muliple destination routing. (like Mapquest's route planner)

I am looking for a GPS that I can put in ?? destinations and can continue from one to another.  I currently use Mapquest's Route Planner, and then put each destination seperately so I do not have to read while driving.  I think there are some available someplace.   I can get up to 26 in Mapquest, but, I am looking for something like that.

I am so sorry that no one has provided you with an
answer. I have done some research on this topic and found that most major
manufacturers offer this on their GPS systems. It is know and route/trip
planner or something along those lines. I looked through a few GPS systems and didn’t
see that this option was included in the features. This either means that it is
such a standard feature that they don’t note it, or the models I looked at just
    don’t have it.
I would consult with a GPS sales associate at your local
Best Buy® store to see if the unit you are interested in definitely has it. Sorry
again for the delayed response. Please let me know if there is anything else I
    can help you with.

  • Can you block gps tracking on your iphone

Can I block gps tracking on my iphone?

    What GPS tracking?
GPS provides your location to Apps within the iPhone.     You can manage what apps have access to Location Services in Settings->Privacy->Location Services. You can turn location Sharing to other devices there too.
If you have Find My iPhone turned on, it uses the iPhone's GPS location to find it in icloud.com.
You can turn this off in Settings->iCloud.

  • How to use Mapquest GPS on iPhone?

I know this is is not an Apple App, but I am truing to figure out how do I save MapQuest routes on iPhone 4? After looking for over a month how to make it work, I gave up and came to this place hoping to get an answer. I found that only way to do it is create MapQuest Route Planner desktop. But I still don't see any favorite routes on my iPhone even signing into the account.
    Appreciate any help.

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.

I got the same error for Mapquest. I will be pushing this up to get it looked at.
As for Google maps you can turn off your GPS and you can still use the application on the device. The EULA is for the location based services that run with GPS and Google. Also Sprint Navigation has a setting for a 2D map over a 3D map. To change to a 2D map open the Sprint Nav program and when it comes to the screen of search tap on sprint in the top and then Preferences. Then you have the option of 3D moving maps or 2D moving maps.

  • How do I block data use on my phone?

I have an LG Cosmos with access to mobile web, mobile email and gps. I don't have a data plan so it would charge me by the mb or whatever. Access to these features is really easy so to prevent accidents or other people playing with my phone from racking up my bill, how can I block data usage? Airplane mode would also turn off my phone signal so how else would I block data?

Same thing has happened to me now in 2 of the last 3 months.  Had to call and complain as I don't use the mobile web on my phone.
So you have the data block?  I was told straight out when they put the block on for me you are charged the minimum for it just trying  to connect so I didn't bother to call and have them take it off since it was my fault and I knew that would happen, guess I should have said something.  I am more carefull now with my fingers.    Mary

  • Looking for an iPhone GPS app comparable to Android

I am getting ready to switch from my DroidX to the iPhone 4s.   The only thing that is holding me up is the GPS.  The one I have on my DroidX works great.  I can speak into the phone and say something like "Target", and it displays the nearest Target stores.  I select one, and it then gives me voice-enabled turn-by-turn directions.  If I go the wrong way, it recalculates and gives me new directions.    The maps are always up to date.  When we crossed from NY into Canada, the GPS adapted accordingly, and didn't miss a beat.
The native iPhone GPS app doesn't seem to be as good.  I'm spoiled.  Is there a comparable GPS app that will run on the iPhone?
    Thanks!

I'd recommend Navigon. There are different bundles (U.S. East Region, North America, etc...). . Yes, you do have to pay and it is a large file (1.7GB currently). However, updates are free. From my understanding, the Navigon app map data is stored on your phone and will work without a GPS signal. (I haven't had to use it in such a manner.) Google Maps Navigation for Android is great but a data connection is always required. And, in my experience, Navigon directions have been more accurate than Google Maps. The MapQuest app is free but ad content is visible.

  • GPS in 3.0

    Hi all!
I'm having a problem here, I've updated to 3.0 last week and since then the GPS is working really bad. When it comes to locate me, it's way off. Sometimes it's 10 blocks away from my current location..
Is anyone having the same problem? In 2.2.1 it was working nicely
    Thanks!

Yes: before the 3.0 update, my 3G was great--it got a precise, continuous GPS fix while driving (dash-mount). Great for navigating even with just the Maps app.
Now it very often can't get any more than a cell tower fix, even when I'm standing in the open--and sometimes the circle is HUGE, many miles across, which I never saw pre-3.0.
When it does get a precise GPS fix, it takes a long time--around a minute. Then, as I drive, instead of the smooth scrolling motion I'd been used to, the fix freezes and then updates about once every 3 blocks. Useless.
Google Earth has the same problem, so it's a Location Services problem, not Maps.

  • N96 GPS use in Egypt

    Dear All,
Yesterday I purchased my Nokia N96 from the Nokia dealer where I live in Cairo, Egypt (I have to state that my country along with Syria and North Korea are the only 3 countries in the world that does not allow the GPS mobiles). At the same time all the previous models like N95, N95 8GB (which I also own) and N82 are available in the black market in Cairo without Nokia warranty.
Any ways, the N96 is available now in Egypt through the authorized Nokia dealer with a note on the phone box mentioning that the GPS is disabled on these units as it was manufactured only to be used in Egypt.
As an advanced user, I knew that most of the modern mobiles processors contains the GPS as an integrated part of the processor and I assume that N96 is no exception (it use a dual ARM 9 processor with 332MHz Clock Rate).
So I came up to a conclusion that if Nokia wants to sell this phone legally in Egypt through the authorized dealer and according to the governmental rules it will disable the GPS using a software to block the GPS Comm. Port not by eliminating the GPS as Hardware, (a year ago HTC did the same thing when the Tytn II (Windows Mobile) was introduced to the Egyptian market but I solved this problem within 1 week after I purchased it on December 2007 by flashing the phone ROM with the help of a very friendly Web site for the Tytn II fans, they offered the original English ROM that upon installation freed up the GPS Comm. Port then in a separate folder they offered the Arabic Language files that enables the users in our region to read, write SMS and e-mail in Arabic)
So, is there any available way to do the same thing to my new N96? I tried Nokia Software Update but I got a message stating that I have the latest software version for my region)
    Current mobile details:
    SoftwareVersion: 11.018
    Date: 13.9.2008
    Custom Version: 11.018.098.1
    Language Set: 010
    RM-247
Thank you for your kind help and sorry for bothering with this long letter but I have to tell the story as it is.

the GPS was the reason why the 6110 navigator was never offcially released in Egypt. with the N96 a solution was found to disable the GPS in order to be able to sell it.
unfortunately, trying to change the phone to enable such a feature will also void your warranty, and i echo grschinon's words regarding this.
i think you have invested a good amount of money in this phone to void the warranty doing this.
Fear not those who argue but those who dodge

  • Horendous gps with C6, I want to throw my phone in...

I am so freaaking sick of this phone, it is only few months old. I bought it mainly because of disposable keyboard and gps tracking. But gps just does not work. Today I am waling aroudn the city trying to get signal, because I was lost, and nothing helped. I waited like 30 minutes, in fact I tried to use **bleep**ing gps 3 days in a row and each time battery ran out and still not freaking signal
yes i tried so long that the battery ran out. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED PUTTING OUT A **bleep** OF A PHONE LIKE THAT: WHAT A PIECE OF **bleep** THIS PHONE IS: As soon as I find another solution, I am throwing this piece of garbage whre it belongs, in the sewer.

As MartinHo said, did you use A-GPS? If not, its not unusual for you not to get a signal. You are in a city with tall buildings blocking the GPS satellites. The GPS device on ANY phone cannot work as well as a dedicated GPS device simply because these are low power consumption models and are smaller. Simply put, use A-GPS to get the fix in a few seconds. Fix will take even more time if you did not pre-download maps onto your phone (opening maps show you a blank slate), because even if you do get a fix (a red dot in center of screen) you still have to use data to download the city maps. If you have set the maps to offline but does not have a downloaded map, then you'll get a position fix via coordinates but not the maps since you disabled downloading by setting offline.
If you want to use the maps without network cost, you have to predownload the maps, and have a working signal from an open area before daring to venture into a city with tall buildings.
If you want an easier approach and decide to throw away the phone, then buy a dedicated navigator. Shame it cant make a call though.

  • N97 GPS cannot get a fix..

My N97 gps is having difficulty getting a fix on my position.
i was side by side with my fiance E71, and hers gets  a fix in less than 20 secs. Whereas my N97 takes a long time, and after that, It just say unable to get a fix on the locatin, GPS works poor in enclosed area.
    Any help?

I do not think that the N97 hardware is a flaw because I have tested it, see my other feedback in the forum and what I did.
In brief, I get a GPS fix in 1 second with a 8cm ultra thin copper wire coiled and hidden under double-sided tape under the orignal label antenna. This is done by first coiling this wire over a double-sided tape and then purely slightly peeling the original anntena tape, and placing this double-side tape (with wire) onto the plastic. Then stick the original antenna tape back into position: all fully concealed, without screws or opening the phone.
Even, if I remove this antenna extension, I still get a GPS fix between 5 to 15 seconds. I will say the antenna extension increase the signal strength of GPS signals and give a GPS fix in 1 seconds instead of 5 seconds, and also help to provide GPS fix under (metallic roof) shelters. Without the antenna extension, it is not possible to get a GPS fix under metallic-roof shelters.
I installed Garmin Mobile, and accidentally found a file 20006e9c.sis in the private folder in the mass memory which help to get a GPS fix under 15 seconds, under all weather conditions. Then when I remove this file, I cannot get a GPS fix under 15 seconds, it took about 5 minutes to get a GPS fix under clear sky, no signal under bad sky.
Now I tried with Nokia Map. Without Garmin and the file, it took 5 minutes to get a GPS fix under clear sky, and no signal under bad sky.
Now I tried Nokia Map after Garmin activated (with the file), and I get GPS fix between 1 to 15 seconds under all conditions. And with the antenna extension, it is between instant 1 second to 5 seconds.
So I will say that the N97 hardware is ok, except the GPS software. I cannot see the private folder in the phone memory as it is blocked (my phone is not hacked). I believe installation of Nokia Map created some new files in the private folder but every installation create different file in the folder (just like Garmin).
Some N97 work well because the file created in the private folder improves the GPS fix while other files deteriorate the GPS fix.
My suggestion: if possible, remove and re-install the Nokia Map in the phone until the file created is the one that improves the GPS fix. Sorry, I only know the needed file for Garmin is 20006e9c.sis which should be in the private folder. For Nokia Map, I do not know what file, and anyway I cannot access the phone memory.
Cheers! I believe in the Nokia Equipment, though not in the firmware, especially the GPS software

  • Mapping and GPS

    Device: 920 Windows phone
My friend has a Droid  with an app that allows you, once it has your current gps, to speak an address into the phone and get step by step driving locations to that location.  We're both on Verizon.
Is anything similar available for Nokia 920 Windows phone?
I have to add My experience with the Here Drive-Beta is pretty miserable.  It does not seem to accept specific addresses in the search block so it's very time consuming and distracting when you're driving.
She can drive and very easily speak an address to the phone and then we're guided turn by turn to the destination. Very handy when your house hunting or looking for a restaurant.
My research so far has not found anything similar for my phone so I'm hoping for somebody to prove me wrong.

From what I have read on both this forum and Crackberry's Verizon 8330 GPS is not enabled unless you pay for VZ Navigator. However, Google maps uses cell towers as well to triangulate your position, if your GPS is disabled. Google Maps works real well, as long as you can live with being APPROXIMATLEY on a location. In my case I am within 5,000 meters while at home. When I travel downtown I've had it go to within 500 meters. I believe that difference is the amount of cell towers in the area.
Google maps is free, VZnavigator is a monthly fee of around $10 I think.
    Hope this helps!
