GPS lock on question...

Hi, I am looking to buy another phone, and would like one that locks on to a GPS signal without aGPS and doing it in less that 15min. I currently have an e71, which works great sometimes for this, but very poorly on other times.
Does anyone have any experience with cold lock on times without using A-GPS? Can you post your phone and your average lock-on times?  Also say what apps you use (OVI, Garmin, etc)
thanks

If you have location services turned on, then yes it is using your A-GPS chip, though not as heavily as if you have an app open that is using location services.
I guess you'd say it's on and in a low power mode/state.
It's pretty much exactly like you said about Bluetooth how if you have it turned on and you don't have a device connected, it's still using power cause it's basically in a low power state waitin for a device to be connected.
As Apple themselves say if you want to extend your battery life and you are not using or you don't need location services for any of the apps that you currently have running then switch location services off.
This is because the iPhone's A-GPS chip is recieving power, even if it is in a low power state.
To put it simply, when it comes to Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Location Services or even 3G ,(cause these are all battery drawing features), if you don't need it then turn it off and your battery will thank you for it.
I hope this helps

  • No GPS lock in the Dominican Republic

I have installed this version of 3.06 on my Nokia 5230 Nuron
    ovi_maps_installer_3.06_11wk7_b11_s60_5.0_nocs_beta.sis
which works very well in the USA. I have no data plan with T-mobile so I do not use any internet connectivity to assist the GPS. I went to the Dominican Republic where I had no T-Mobile coverage (and didn't expect to) for 10 days and just got back. Before I left I loaded the DR map onto my phone. I thought that the GPS should work fine there because it doen't require a data plan and it doesn't require any phone coverage. I could never get a GPS lock or even show a GPS signal while there. Am I wrong about what is required for the GPS to work on these phones?
    Thanks.

    @gregorycharper
There are no holes in GPS satellite coverage, although the number of remaining satellites which could be brought into service in case of failure are now quite depleted.
As farby pointed out if you relying solely on Integrated GPS as a positioning method, it is like starting OVI Maps application for the very first time again and you need to give it sufficient time to lock on to your new location.

  • Nokia 6220 - GPS,Maps,Navigation Question

This may be a silly question but I'm a little confused over this
I am considering buying a 6220 (SIM free), mainly because it's an 'upgraded' version to my existing 6300.
The idea is instead of having a SAT NAV (for the occasional trips to places I've never been before) & a mobile phone & a MP3 player etc - I get an all-in-one in a small package
Now to the question - What is the difference between 'Nokia Maps' and 'Navigation' ?.
Apparently 'Nokia Maps' is free but 'Navigation' isn't
Am I right in assuming that 'Nokia Maps' only shows you where you are & Where you want to go BUT doesn't give constant updates as you drive/walk between the 2 - a bit like if you have a map & ask a passerby to shows you where you are & where you want to go on the map - but doesn't tell you how to get there (you have to figure it out yourself)
BUT 'Navigation' is where you can have it in the car & it tells you the directions ('take next left'/'3rd right at next roundabout' etc) each step of the way i.e. Just like a Car 'SAT-NAV' equivalent
I don't like the idea of paying for a 'satnav/phone/media player' combi-device then paying EXTRA so that you can use it as a SAT-NAV, especially if you only going to use it maybe once or twice in a year.

I think I have worked out what is going on here...
I hard reset my N95, installed the maps fresh (which took a very long time, but that is a different subject, so I won't get going on that)
I then checked if I could do full 7 digit postcode search while at home and still no, with "Network Use" set to "Never"
However, I have now come into the office, defined the wlan acess point (mine is broken at home) and set "Network Use" to "when needed" and I can do full 7 digit postcode search. If I then change that setting to "never" it reversts back to truncating the postcode.
I would appreciate if other N95 owners could confirm that this happens on their N95 too, and if so, it looks like maps is pulling additional info from somewhere to enchance the downloaded map.
You seem to be right. I cleared all the maps, then downloaded the maps for England using maploader and tested it. With network connection you can do full postcode search, but as soon as the internet connection is lost or turned off the system reverts back to truncating the postcode.
If you use the route planner while you have the network connection you can use the full postcode to set the destination point while having the GPS position as your starting point and the destination point gets stored as your destination.

  • Oracle's locking strategy question

I have a question related to Oracle's locking mechanism which I understand is related to taking "snapshots in time" to avoid writers blocking readers (which happens in SQL Server).
Suppose I had a table T1 with 1 billion records and column C1 = 4 in every row. Suppose the following events occur:
    12:00 update T1 set C1 = 5
12:01 select C1 from T1 where ... (and this statement returns only one row)
1:00 the update statement executed at 12:00 finally finishes
Would oracle return the value 4 regardless or which row was selected at 12:01?
Why would this be more correct than locking the table and waiting until 1:00 and returning 5? Sure, this would be a long wait, but at 12:00 a command was issued to set every value to 5!

You are question is related to oracle transaction
control and read consistency in the database in
Oracle database all the SQL and DML runs with SCN
    timestamp.
    for example
    Session 1 SQL 12:00 > UPDATE t1 SET c4=5 ;
---assuming this runs for an hour
before updating c4=5 it takes the snapshot of the C4
    column data and keeps in
UNDO segments to make other sessions read
    consistent.
    Session 2 SQL 12:01 > SELECT c4 FROM t1 WHERE ....
this will return 4 as the DML is not yet comminted in
    the Session 1
To happen this Oracle database server process reads
the data from UNDO to answer your question.locks are
matianed at the database BLOCK header level.
Let me put a simple thought here
You have two debit cards issued for one account one
is with you and the other one is with your beloved
    one.Balance in your account = Rs 40000
    1) at 12:00 you went to a ATM and inserted your debit
card to draw amt Rs 20000
and your transaction is still processing ( you not
    recieved the cash)
    2) at 12:01 your beloved one went an another ATM and
interested to see the balance so do you think Rs
40000 should be shown or Rs 20000.
hope you got some ideaNot to pick nits, but I think this is a bad example. If you had such an important action (especially if it was going to take a long time to complete) you would/should have some kind of lock on modifying the account value so that this very thing couldn't happen! Only one transaction at a time gets to update the balance. In a sense, that might make Oracle look like the SQL Server you appear to be familiar with (the 2nd transaction would wait. A very long time!) But for a bank account type transaction, you almost have to.

  • GPS/Places Workflow Question

OK, so I'm new to this GPS thing (bought a Dakota 10) and I'm heading off to Scotland for a couple of weeks where I'll be taking a ton of photos. I plan on importing everything into Places, including, obviously, the tracks I generate each day. My question concerns the optimal way to record the tracks. Should I just create one long track each day? Is it easier to manage multiple smaller tracks?
I will also be laying the tracks into Google Earth in order to show where we went on our web pages, so the same question will apply there. Easier to use one big track or several smaller ones per day?
I realize this isn't rocket science, but I figured that this community may have some tips/hints that I could leverage.
    Thanks.

You can check out earlier comments I made about importing tracks - put "Places" in the search for this forum. The latest update, Ap 3.03, has added support for seconds (previously hours and minutes were the default), so this addresses one issue I had when importing tracks.
As for one versus multiple tracks per day, if data storage on the GPS tracker is not an issue I'd go for as few tracks as possible (i.e. one per day). I took me more time to synch them correctly in Aperture than I expected, so having it link to hundreds of images at once (i.e. all your day's images) will speed things up.
FYI, select a highlighted image that you drag onto the imported track carefully (this is the one you are using to synch the time at a particular location). If you spend a lot of time in one place, it turns into a spagetti mess of GPS data points and is almost impossible to find the right synch line. So sometimes I synched using a first photo, sometimes a last photo, or sometimes another random image that was distinct on a map...
One other thing - if you use Places to add the GPS data to images, and it doesn't look right, you can select all the images, then remove the longitude/latitude data, and try linking to the GPS data again. Sometimes took a few tries, but I ended up happier this way. Hopefully the new seconds display will help, assuming you've set your camera as close to UTC as possible. I used http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/ to synch my cameras before I left, and probably got to within half a second.

This would only work if you have iOS5 installed, and you have activated the "Find my iPhone" feature.
If so, you clould log into iCloud and locate or remotely lock or wipe your phone.

Has anyone still having problems tried this Apple
    article??
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499
I have seen the article. The problem I seem to have is that the Ipod shows up in the device manager but not in the disk management section for me to do anything with it.
I did get it working on the Compaq - followed same steps on the Dell with no luck.
I completely removed everything - restarted the computer
from Apple.com downloaded Ipod updater (newest version) itunes and quickplace.
    restarted the computer
    reset the ipod
    connected the ipod
the hardware was found by the computer as an ipod, then as a storage device (drive F).
    that's where I sit
    any ideas?

  • Lock Consolidation Question

Is there any way to lock down a period to prevent it from being consolidated if it is not at OK status? The typical answer would be to consolidate, get to OK status, and then lock the entities. But, we are attempting to quickly archive out some prior period data, years 2006-2009, but thought that in order for roll forwards and other accounts to work properly we need to keep Dec 2009 YTD data. By leaving this data, but clearing Jan - Nov, we would run the risk of someone going into Dec 2009 and inadvertently Consolidating.
We could write a rule for No Input to the period, but is there another rule to prevent Consolidation on accident?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi there,
We had a similar conversation a few weeks ago..Block Consolidation for Prior Period Unfortunately, we never heard what happened in the end.

  • Lock screen question? :)

Let me start off by saying that I absolutely LOVE the ICS update. Great job SONY
There is one minor negative I noticed. On GB the lock screen would show unread text messages, missed calls and facebook notificatiuon count.
On ICS it no longer shows this information I was quite fond of that feature. Is there anyway to add this feature again for ICS?
    Thank you

  • Few lock table questions ...

I have an app with Java + Oracle. I have a few tables which can be modified ( select, insert, up, del) by more than one user.
    For ex
    //---------- get info from database
    SELECT a FROM A;
    // later
    SELECT b FROM B;
    // --------- end
Q1). how can I make sure that after I select from A, no one modifies table B, until I select from B ?
Q2). If I have 3 tables and I have to insert some values, in all of them, how should I do this ? ( lock tables, put the insert * 3 into an transaction, release locks)
Q3). I know that jdbc-odbc isn't very good, but still, can I use it ?

Q1). how can I make sure that after I select from A,
no one modifies table B, until I select from B ?No one modifies table B in any way at all? While the user goes for a coffee break? Why would you want that?
Q2). If I have 3 tables and I have to insert some
values, in all of them, how should I do this ? ( lock
tables, put the insert * 3 into an transaction,
release locks)Just insert the records. You can put the three inserts in a transaction, if you need that, but there's no point in preventing other users from accessing the tables while you do that.
Database applications that use Oracle or other databases designed for large numbers of users rarely lock tables. If your design leads you into a place where you have to lock tables then you probably need to go back and fix your design so that it supports multiple users in a normal way.
    Q3). I know that jdbc-odbc isn't very good, but
still, can I use it ?Sure. But Oracle comes with its own JDBC drivers so you don't need to.

  • Lightroom 4 GPS/ Country Code questions

    1.  If you import an image with GPS data, Lightroom 4 will add appropriate values for Sublocation, City, State/Province, Country and Country Code.  Is there a way to add this data to existing files while retaining history?
You can write metadata to files ([Ctrl][S]), remove those files from Lightroom and then synch folder to reimport them.  That reimports them with all modifed settings but without their history.  Is there another way that retains the history?
    2.  Is a google map link available for a GPS location of a photograph?
In Lightroom 3, you could click on the GPS location and that took you to a Google map page with a specific web link that you could then publish, eg on a blog.  You can copy and paste the GPS location into a Google map page but that does not give you a web link you can use.
    3. Is there a way of publishing a map?
Is there (or will there be) any way of exporting a map page, say as a jpeg?
Is it OK to take a screen dump of a map page and publish it, eg in a blog?

    Ian Lyons wrote:
    1. There is no way of saving history to the file.
I've worked it out.  There is a way of updating location descriptions for existing images in Lightroom 4 from the GPS setting.
If you select some images with the same GPS location and [Synch Metadata] for GPS, this fills in the location descriptions, even if none of the images have them to start with.
There are then two ways of doing this for a Folder of images:
    (1)  Modifying in Library
Select a bunch of images taken in the same place and therefore with the same GPS setting.  You can check that the GPS settings are the same because under Metadata in the right-hand tab it will show a single GPS location rather than "<mixed>".
    [Synch Metadata] for GPS.
    Repeat for different locations.
If you have a single image in a location, you'd need to create a virtual copy, [Synch Metadata] for GPS, then delete the virtual copy.
    (2)  Modifying through re-import
This method is more complex but may be quicker where there are many GPS locations.
It is probably a good idea to first ensure you have a current backup, or backup to a catalogue, in case anything goes wrong.
Select images with no changes to Develop settings: click the Metadata filter (Library/ Grid mode) and then filter for Develop Preset = "Default Settings".
Write metadata for these images to files
    [Ctrl][S]
(unless you already do this with every image change)
Remove the selected images from the Lightroom catalogue:  click [Delete] and then select [Remove] (do not [Delete from Disk]).
Reimport the images:  right-click the folder for the images and select [Synchronise Folder ...].
All the images with no Development changes will now have location descriptions.
Now you can update the images with Development changes without affecting the History.
Filter for Develop Settings = "Custom",
select an image (or several at the same location),
filter for Develop Settings = "All" and
synch GPS settings from an adjacent image with location descriptions.

  • Locking Folder - questions

I have a folder named "Photos" that I store my photographs in that I have many folders and folders within folders and photo files in.
I had a scare last night as I burnt some photos to DVD, yet there were too many, so I went to remove them from the DVD (by dragging to trash) and at some point I actually double clicked the aliases on the DVD and was inadvertently dragging some folders to the trash that were the real files on the HD. Luckily, I had everything backed up and recovered.
I'd like to avoid this in the future. Can I simply "lock" the "Photos" folder and protect all folders and files in the "Photos folder" or do I have to individually lock each folder in the "Photos" folder.
I did a test run and locked "Photos" It successfully locked me from dragging things into "Photos" (which is good), but then I dragged a folder out of "Photos" to the desktop (which I thought it wouldn't allow me and would also be good) but it did allow folders in there to be removed from "Photos" and placed on the desktop. I won't attempt to drag folders from "Photos" to the trash and delete for obvious reasons but I just wonder if the locked folder would allow that to occur also.
Update: I just did a quick test by creating an untitled folder and locking it and placing folders with files in them in the untitled folder. I locked the untitled folder and when I dragged something out of it to the desktop it only made a copy of the folder (and it's contents) on the desktop and retained the folder in the locked untitled folder. What puzzles me is that if I like "Photos" and drag a folder out of it, the original folder is removed from "Photos" and placed on the desktop (not a copy) - strange!

my last sentence should have read
"What puzzles me is that if I lock "Photos" and drag a folder out of it, the original folder is removed from "Photos" and placed on the desktop (not a copy) - strange!"

  • Locking Rows Question

I have a multiple row ViewObject that I am updating on several pages. When said ViewObject is updated, it updates the rows from a given page but does not commit the Transaction. Only after all rows are committed is the transaction complete and committed.
It appears to me that after the ViewObject is updated, all rows of the ViewObject are locked until they are committed. Thus, if a user's browser crashes and they go back in, they can't save anything, because I get a row already locked error. Is there anyway to keep a ViewObject open and edited but not keep the rows locked, or do I have to commit after every transaction?
    Thanks!

Within my schema I have several "layers" of tables. That is, a root table (pk: id_root), a child of the root (pk: id_root, id_child), a grandchild of the root (pk: id_root, id_child, id_grandchild), etc.
For our application it is necessary to commit after each transaction. That has left me unable to leverage the nested VOs (connected by ViewLinks) because the commit resets the row currency of the VOs. So I've taken an approach similar to what you were using in the ToyStore demo; when I load a child VO, I filter (WHERE clause) using the ID of the selected root VO. And this approach is used uniformly throughout. I build the full WHERE clause using table.column aliases (rather than using bind variables) so I can keep the implementation generic across all VOs.
When I say default I'm not referring to a constant value, rather it is the current selected value. I can't just set a default value in the VO definition because it changes as a user navigates the application. The current selected value is part of the primary key of the children, so I need to automatically set it in the background whenever a new record is created.
What I have works to a point, but I am unsure that I have found the best places to code in the logic. Currently I am using static variables in the VO to store the currently selected values.

  • IPhone 5 lock button question

My iPhone 5's lock button is literally impossible to lock. When I use the assisting gestures to turn off the phone, I can actually turn on the phone with the lock button. Yes, it is covered by warranty.
