GPS on E65

A quick question. I live in Australia and have an unlocked E65. In September, we're going to Europe for 4 weeks and I was thinking of purchasing a bluetooth GPS receiver so that I can use the Nokia Maps application in Europe. My question is, do I need a SIM card installed to use the Nokia Maps app? I'm worried that if I contact Optus and get my phone enabled for overseas roaming, I'll come home and find a large bill waiting. The alternative is to get a cheap SIM in Europe and stick it in the phone but I've heard that can be difficult for tourists.
Suggestions?

yes you will have to use a SIM card in the phone otherwise the phone cannot access the network to use the GPS. you do need a SIM card if you have downloaded maps to the phone, but if you are planning on using real-time navigation/route planning, of course you need the SIM card and the appropriate maps licences. you will have to check with Optus re: roaming costs for data, but since Optus likes ripping off customers , i would suggest another option, just to buy a standalone GPS unit (Garmin, TomTom etc) and use that instead. or of course, the SIM in Europe option.
If you found this or someone's comments helpful or like what that person has to say, please give some Kudos to their post!

  • Can't connect TomTom One XL gps to E65

    Hi there.
I have a TomTom One XL and I tried pairing it with my Nokia E65. The pairing worked and I can use my phone functions with my TomTom, but I'm trying to do is use the gps functions on my E65 applications like Navigator. When I go on Navigator, it asks me which device is the GPS; I choose my TomTom, but it asks me to choose the device again and again. I feel like the TomTom doesn't allow the E65 to connect and stay connected to my phone unless it need the phone's functionalities.
Any way I can make it work ?
    Thanks.

You need top install tomtom mobile to your phone and get a gps for your phone to link it to... Heres a link on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Bluetooth-GPS-Receiver-For-Nokia-N95-N73-N80-N72-N70-UK_W0QQitemZ160131172110Q...

  • How to use GPS on Nokia E65

i am unable to use GPS on my Nokia E65. can u please tell me how i can use GPS on my mobile fone. secondly tell me does it coast some thing

Depending on your software version Nokia maps can be used as a GPS programme. With the latest Version 2.0633.65.01 Nokia maps is included as a standard menu item.
Your other option would be to buy a Garmin Mobile XT pack which includes maps and navigation. Depending on your gegion the price will vary.
The E65-1 does not have a built in GPS receiver therefore you will also need to purchase a one. Nokia's LD-3W works well and is not that costly.
Lastly Nokia maps will cost you as it needs to be activated for full navigation functions. Once again this will depend on your region.

  • E65 and GPS Navman

    Hi,
    I have a Nokia E65 and a GPS bluetooth Navman 4410.
The GPS's code to pair is NAVMAN.
But when I try to pair them, I only can write numbers (no letters).
    Could you help me?
    Thanks a lot.

All Nokia phones seem to support only numeric Bluetooth passcodes (pairing codes).
There are about 950 million Nokia phones in daily use. Nokia sold 437 million phones in 2007 alone.
NAVMAN is loosing a lot of potential customers by insisting on using "NAVMAN" (all letters) for their Bluetooth GPS receiver, as no Nokia phone owner can use a NAVMAN GPS receiver.
Of course, Nokia could also change their phones to also accept other characters (not just digits) for Bluetooth passcodes, but it'll still be easier and faster for a much smaller and probably nimbler company, like NAVMAN, to change, than it it is to get a big company to do such a change (and there are more existing Nokia phones out there, than NAVMAN GPS units, I'm sure).
In the meanwhile, buy and use somebody else's Bluetooth GPS modules (or somebody else's phones, if you absolutely must have a NAVMAN GPS receiver, and nothing else will make you happy).

  • Nokia E65 with Third party GPS

    Hello,
    I have a E65 and I just got as a gift a GPS bluetooth JRT-29.
I can pair the device but when i open Tom Tom or Nokia Maps or even Navigator it reconizes the bluetooth device but it does not connect to the satelites.
According to the instructions i have read it alwasy say the GPS must be connected via Port Com 8 and this option i can not setup on E65.
Btw i also try the GPS on a N73.. no results. can not get connected.
Do you guys have any ideia?
    Many Thanks
    Rui

    Hi ruicabral
I wish that I could be more positive but it does seem that since there are now Nokia LD-3W and LD-4W BT GPS receivers available, that more connectivity problems have been reported using non-Nokia GPS units with more recent phone software updates. The N73 especially has given problems in this respect.

  • Nokia E65 GPS

    Hello everyone
i am thinking about getting an E65 and if i do i am going to get a gps reciever along with it.
i just had a few questions
    1. Do you need to download maps everytime you want to use it or can you use old maps?
    2. if you have to download data everytime can you transfer it from the nokia maps loader program?
    3. If you need to download the data, can the WIFI be used before the beginning of a journey?
    4. How much data typically would you used for GPS?
    5. Does nokia maps voice guidance use extra data and can you use wifi for this?

You would be better off spending your cash on another model. The E65 has a lot of problems that still haven't been fixed. It's also very slow and won't perform at all well as a sat-nav.
If you are planning on using a phone for sat nav you should invest in a phone with the S60v3 FP1 or FP2 operating system as they perform much better.

    To answer your questions:
    1. You download maps to your phone before you set off and they stay there until you delete them. Use maploader to get all maps for the areas that you visit.
    2. See above.
    3. No, you need to use maploader or a wifi hotspot in an area that you don't have a map for.
    4. You wouldn't use any data for GPS. Other features such as Assisted GPS (on supported models) and online address searches use tiny amounts of data (usually less than 5kb) but these can be disabled if you wish.
    5. The voice guidence is a service that you pay for and download to the phone, it doesn't use any data.

  • E65 - GPS Module LD-3W

    Hi
    Sorry for my englih.
This is a post to explain how you can solve a problem with GPS modules.
I try maps with a Tomtom Bluetooth module on my new E65 and it works fine.
After this, i bought the Nokia LD module and it was impossible to configure.
Symptoms : maps don't find a GPS Blurtooth module ( but LD was on and previously detected by the phone )
Solution : I need to delete the Tomtom module always present in the Bluetooth menu. After that, i startet the tools\navigato and i was asked "what module". My choice was the LD module, and after that, it was christmas.
The nokia phone remember a Gps module until you erase him.
    Don't loose time like me.
I hope i helped with this topic cause the manual is poor.

    Hi dhanesh
Unfortunately without knowing from which part of the world you are posting, it is not possible to suggest whether TomTom6, Route66 or Wayfinder7 might be appropriate to your needs.
Of these three mentioned only Wayfinder would offer you a free trial.

  • E65 and Garmin Nuvi 215

    Hi y'all
I just bought a Nuvi 215 which i love - first proper gps and i dont know how I
    lived without before!
I have got 2 problems regarding connecting with my E65
    1) I cant get the phonebook/contacts on my phone to show on the nuvi.
I have searched the forum for solutions - I cant get my phone to send the
marked cantacts to the gps - i get 'sending failed' message on the phone.
Have tried downloading the 810 contact app but it is in a permanent state of 'processing'...
2)When I hang up a call on the nuvi the volume has been reduced to
almost nothing even though its still on the 70% on the volume menu.
This also happens when the phone first pairs with the gps, and seems to
do it at random times too.
    Any help will be appreciated!
    thanks,

I have not had any problems; I get in-and-out of the car and each time the two devices have successfully paired. I once turned off BT for a while in the iPhone but had no problems when I turned it back on and then later got in the car to go somewhere. I keep my Nuvi plugged in all the time -- maybe that makes a difference? Do you unplug your Nuvi when leaving the car and then replug it when starting out again?

  • Urgent help about gps

hi guys iam using an nokia n95 european model in usa iam not able to use gps can anyone help me or can i update the software

    1) You can update your europe N95 code to an updated software version if such version is available for your version of the N95. In other words, you cannot get a US N95 update (when it is released) for your european N95 b/c the product codes are different.
    2) GPS should work everywhere in the world but street level maps may not be available. Sometimes in metropolitan cities with high rises, I am not seeing a strong GPS signal , or that the signal is intermittent (so one could possibly think the gps is not working).

  • Help for a total newb with e65

    Hi All,
Please help, I got the E65 and good posts about getting the wlan working.
But I got the navigator app with it, and I really dont get all this GPS stuff , with it working off satellite, but charging my mobile with data chrages, software that works with recievers and phones, some symbian.
Somebody explain it all in lamens terms please.
    Cheers

    Hi kiltedscot
Can I use this analogy, if you buy a TomTom car navigation unit the package includes the hardware (processor + GPS receiver) and navigation software for a fixed but known cost (there is no charge for receiving data from GPS satellite system owned by the US Government)
You have purchased the processor (E65), you need to purchase a Bluetooth GPS receiver to get positional data, the Symbian navigation software is provided free and if you download maps via your PC there is no need to incur GPRS data charges. If however you want a full talking navigation option, you do need to purchase a licence which in UK is just over £40 for 3 years.

  • 6210 Navigator: Issues with GPS

    Hi there,
We just got a 6210 navigator phone, and it works great, apart from the GPS function.
We have only been able to get the GPS function to work once, where the little red dot actually was where we were. Since then everytime we have tried to use it, it keeps saying we are located at home.
We were in another state and we had an address up on the screen. We selected 'show my location' and it went straight back to our home (some 1200kms away)
Is there anyway to fix this?? I know the little strength signal in the bottom right corner isnt that strong, but surely it should work in the middle of Melbourne CBD?
Any hints/tips would be most appreciated. We are with Virgin Mobile.
    thanks

Electronics and strong magnets do not mix at all although it may not effect the working of the device it can still damage the curcit boards.. I suggest you do not use this pouch again and source another one with a less stong megnet or maybe even an velcro catch

  • Is E65 more stable than a MICROSOFT phone?

When I bought my phone I wanted a phone with more funcinalities than a convetional one (email, Internet, 3G, GPS software, etc) so I had two possibilites:
1.- Buy a phone based on Microsoft OS (such HTC, Imate, etc)
2.- Buy a Nokia phone based in SYMBIAN.
I decided to go to a NOKIA because I thougt that it was going to be more stable than the Microsoft BUT now I can see that it is not true.
My first E65 has the keypad with the light broken. I changed it and got a new one. Now it´s reboot a couple of times a day (somedays up to 4 times). Sometimes it reboot without reason (the phone over the table) and other times it makes when I´m in a call. In NOKIA service they told me to disconet the 3g, but it doesn´t help to solve the problem.
Other times, the Explorer close alone when I´m in internet (I heared that the phone gets without memore and has to close the program, Stupid!!!).
My friends with MICROSOFT have some problems, but they are less than the NOKIA and NEVER has the phone hung during a call!!!.
I hope the problem to be solved by a firmware version but we have to wait NOKIA to decide that the phone has problems.....

Which firmwar version do you have?. I have the 1.0633.18.01. RM-208. Perhaps the problem is a firmware version.
My phone reboot automacally and it makes a lot of times during a call. That is very frustating. I´ve heared in other forums and in this forum that those stability problems are common in this phone.
There could be 3 reason for the problem:
1.- Firmware problem: Very easy to solve by Nokia. I believe that it is the cause of the problem (too many posts with stability problem to a hard problem)
2.- Hardware bug of this model: That is imposible to solve. The doubt is that there are people that don´t have any problem (as you).
3.- Hardware problem in this unit: If it is the cause I have to send it to NOKIA and be without my bussines phone for 20 days. That´s mean no blackberry mail, no contact (I have almost 1000 and there isn´t any tradicional phone or SIM that support that amount...)
In the past I had a Imate SP3 with windows and didn´t had any problem with it (some times it makes strange but never interrumped me a call).
So everybody can see that I´m "very happy" with this phone...
PLEASE, NOKIA, PUBLISH NEW FIRMWARE FOR THE PHONE THAT SOLVE PROBLEMS.

  • Upload other maps to Nokia N95 for GPS use

As you all know (I hope you do) Nokia maps does not supply maps for Bolivia, yes, I live in a big, but small country in the heart of South America.
Yesterday, a Garmin local representative offered me a copy (legal copy) of Bolivian maps ($20 per city).
Does anybody knows what format should I ask, and how to upload the maps, if possible, in order to use them with my N95 GPS Maps App???

If u want the map for Maps software in installed in ur N95
then it is useless because the only way to upload a map to ur mobile is by using Nokia Map Loader software.
try to get TomTom or route66 .

  • E65 voice dialing problem

I realized that not all the contacts has a voice tag. Is this normal?

    Dear François,
We should shout all together : ANY BODY FROM NOKIA THERE!!!
I had this problem once again after having discussed with you. I am in Turkey. I experienced the problem completely the same as you described in your post both with English and Turkish languages on the phone.
I think this is a problem of comptability of any of the following combinations; Phone Software / PC suite / Windows Vista / and, maybe, the silly Toshiba bluetooth stack I am bedly experiencing since I have changed my laptop for about 15 days ago. Before, it was a heaven with XP + Vidcomm bluetooth drivers.
I will try to describe my environment parameters and what happens when, just expecting that somebody from Nokia may read and bring a solution to this problem as soon as possible.
The voice dialing is dieing when you synchronize is with PC suite and try to reach text messages and calender on the phone through PC suite. The way I found to solve the problem is to turn off the synthesiser. Swicth the phone off and then swicth it on again and finally turn the synthisiser on. Here you are. It works and also with contacts. This feature is very important for me because I use this feature with my car kit since a while and I was really happy until I had this problem. It was a big comfort.
My environment, if anybody from Nokia will be interested in:
I synchronize my E65 with one Vista laptop, one XP laptop, one car kit (Parrot CK 3000) and one GPS device.
    E65 software version is 3.0633.69.00 06.02.2008 RM208
PC suite versions I keep using 6.86.9.0 and 6.86.9.3.tur
NOKIA PLEASE BRING A SOLUTION TO THAT PROBLEM !!!!!

  • Poor GPS reception in IPhone 3GS, am I the only one having this problem ?

Since I have many problems with GPS drop outs and poor signal strength errors when using navigation software for Iphone 3GS firmware 4.0.2.
First I reset my Iphone completely and installed all apps from scratch, but this has not solved my problem.
I now tried several tests to compare with both an Android phone HTC Desire and a very old Symbian phone Nokia E65. Neither the Nokia E65 or HTC Desire have any drop outs in the GPS reception while my Iphone has several dropouts, making navigation horrible.
Am I the only one having this problem ?

Unfortunately, you are not the only one (I personally use TomTom with car kit). This is one of the numerous bugs introduced by iOS4 and this one has been reported by many in this forum. Be careful not to use your iPhone based navigation system in a foreign country, due to high roaming costs ! I had to use it and nearly had an heart attack when reading the invoice.
Apple doesn't care. Unfortunately, I have to care for my budget.
