GPS on N95

Hello!
How can I use the built-in GPS on my N95? Every time I start the Nokia Maps program, it connects to the internet. Can I use the GPS without having to connect to the internet? If yes, can anyone point me to some guide, because these nokia sites are really confusing...

  • Recommendations for Bluetooth GPS for N95

Has anyone got any recommendations for a Bluetooth GPS receiver (to improve the dire performance of the inbuilt one) available in UK?

I bought the Nokia N95 8GB for its 'all in one device 'convenience.
I bought an external Bluetooth GPS, not because the inernal was no good, or not accurate enough but because I did not want to destroy it with vibration and rain, strapped to the handlebars of my Yamaha XT225
I want to create tracks (kml?)that map out the roads, lanes and footpaths of Cebu, Philippines using my Motorbike, in places the car could not go.
I decided on the Wintec G-Rays2 (WBT-201). This is more than just a Bluetooth GPS, as it has a 'logger' function also (collecting up to 131,072 waypoints). It is also much quicker at acquisition than the internal GPS (34 seconds or if data is still in memory 4-33 sec).
Even in a car, the WBT-201 G-Rays2 unit, can be positioned on the dash, whilst from anywhere in the car, the N95 receives the NMEA0183 format data stream giving position, speed, altitude and time, together with estimated error and satellite status.
'Sports Tracker' works very well with this for receiving the data stream 'live'. Once 'captured' it has many 'export' formats of the captured information. Test 'Tracks' of the same 'Route' using the internal GPS and another time the WBT-201, show the external unit to be more accurate. Having said that, the internal GPS is actually pretty good at capturing the same track.
The only real 'negative' of the WBT-201, is the 'TMXTool' software (for configuring the settings, on the go, rather than connected to a PC), is for PPC, and not S60. However the 'TimeMachineX' software is OK for 'Windows' use.

  • How to use GPS on N95

    Hi,
Plz can anybody help me out.. ive got a N95 for 3 months now... and i dont know how to use the GPS service. I reside in Mumbai INDIA. please if anyone can give me information from zero level.. about what all is needed to use this service..
    Saludos..
    SUNNY!

i've been having the same problems. seems like symbian is pretty bad and doesnt make it easy for users to use the gps. i downloaded the maps and installed everything, but when i run the program, it either cant get a gps location, or is asking me to buy more services from nokia. prior to this, i was using a generic chinese phone with tomtom installed and it worked fabulous, and loaded immediately. from what i understand about the gps on symbian, you have to load all kinds of 3rd party software and make all kinds of modifications to the phone before you can start using programs such as tomtom or route 66. ive tried installing some other gps programs, but keep running into certificate problems. i really don't like symbian at all.

  • GPS on N95 8GB on Pay As You Go?

    Hey guys,
I have an N95 8GB Black which was bought off someone who got it as an upgrade on a Vodaphone contract, but I'm using it on Orange pay as you go.. I was wondering what is up with the GPS because wherever I am it just won't find my location? It just shows the yellow flashing lights as if it is trying to find it, but I have left for hours and no luck...
It's not like there are no satellites as well, I've checked and at times it will show 3 or 4 or even 5!
Also can someone outline the costs involved with GPS (if any) as I'm not really sure how it all works.
    Thanks!

    Hi shyamt
As the internal GPS receiver is fairly feeble partly due to the siting of antenna, it depends upon the Assisted GPS feature to speed up establishment of position. This feature requires an active connection which can be altered in Nokia Maps > Options > Settings > Network - connection = As needed rather than Never. The amount of data downloaded for a position fix is about 5kb.
You don't say whether you are indoors or whether you have tried outside away from tall buildings and trees. You should hold phone at 45 degrees with slider open. I do have concerns that GPS receiver is not working if you never get Three green LEDs
If you go to Menu > Tools > GPS data > Position > Options > Positioning settings there are 4 options available, of which 3 should be ticked - Internal GPS, Network and Assisted GPS.

  • Starting GPS on N95

When I want to start an application on my N95 related to GPS, I first start Tools>GPS Data, wait for satellite connection to be established (black bars), and then start the actual gps application.
Is what I am doing correct, or would the gps application establish connection to satellites on its own ie there is no need to start Tools>GPS Data at all?

  • N95 Add GPS coordinates N95 8GB

    Hi,
I want to add a GPS coordinate to my phone and save it as a Landmark so I can navigate to it using Nokia Maps.
I have not found a way of doing this, I need to use the format:
    Latitude 53°20'38.82"N
    Longitude 6°16'2.98"W
Also is there any way of coping saved points from Google Earth?
    Thanks Des.

As for google earth, let me tell you one thing straight - the coordinates are not the same. That's right, the lat/long coordinates in google maps/earth does not correspond to the same location in nokia maps. At least the ones i have in HK.
Anyway back to your question, basically, you get a gpx file from google earth, and then use http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/ to convert gpx to lmx. Put it in your phone, then open the file up in file manager. There you can import all/selected locations.
Unforturnately, chinese or other asian language support was lacking in that tool, so eventually i have to write my own ETL apps to convert the file.

  • 3 problems with N95

1 cant get my yahoo gmail or hotmail accounts setup i do believe i have the correct settings but i just cant see to connect(this is via the message application screen) any one knows how to connect?
2 gps the N95 just doesnt pick up my satellite position even with coverage it still shows my position as being at home any way to get this running correctly?
3 cant seem to get my internet telephone working all the sip settings are correct to my knowledge ive registered with gizmo setup an account but my home wlan just wont connect no matter what i do anyone with any success with this can you allow me to know how to get it working

I suspect that the problem in vehicles is ensuring the GPS receiver has a good enough view of the sky. My Bluetooth GPS receiver has to be right at the front of the dash so that it only has glass above it.
To give the N95's receiver a similar view, I guess you'd have to have it in a holder that fixes to the windscreen - and does not cover the reception parts. I'm assuming those reception parts are on the back of the phone, otherwise you're never going to see the screen
I have my N80 in one of those holders that fits the air vent: clearly if I had an N95 on one of those, its GPS would have no chance.Message Edited by patc on 19-Apr-200711:03 AM

It is unfortunately of no help to you but in the UK and now available for Finland there is Viewranger trail mapping software available which utilizes the internal GPS on N95.

  • N900 AS STANDALONE GPS

When I looked at the Nokia N900 back in February and was told the N900 'had GPS' I specifically asked if it was a standalone GPS like a TomTom/Garmin as I was intensly frustrated that my N95 8Gb that 'had GPS' only gave me GPS when I had a cell signal. I go beyond the cellular coverage area in my SUV and the N900 is about half the size of my TomTOm. No need to carry two devices. I was told that a software update about a month away would bring GPS use. In the event I waitied four months for the GPS function, and now what do I find? GPS ALWAYS looks for a cellular data link or a WiFi data link!!! Not a stand-alone GPS then it seems, or do I have it wrong? All I know right now is that no WiFi or cell data link = no GPS as the MAPS button never locks on a map.
    Solved!

    Thanks for the tip.
However, with network positioning disabled in the positioning settings and clicking on MAPS the map opens at the last map location and it just reports 'looking for gps'. I have gone out to a nearby field to ensure maximum open sky and still, 'looking for gps'.
N95 and N900 do have internal GPS receiver.
How long did you wait on the field? Getting a fix to GPS satellites (with only the internal GPS receiver of N95 or N900) can take anything between 1-25 minutes, depending on many things. Using Assisted GPS and/or network based location gives you a fix on your location almost instantly, apparently they help also finding the actual GPS satellites faster.
If I use only the internal GPS receiver e.g. abroad, it seems to me that moving (driving) around gets a GPS fix faster than if I just stand still. I don't know if I just imagine it.
If you are not happy with the performance of the internal receiver, the external bluetooth GPS receivers are supposed to get a fix much faster. It may of course also be that your N900 is simply faulty, but I just wanted to stress that don't expect your phone to get a GPS fix fast. Sometimes it does, but if I go abroad thousands of miles and use the GPS, getting the first GPS fix seems to take very long.

  • Route 66 for N95

    Hello,
Does anybody know where I can download an version of route 66 for my Nokia N95, I want navigation with voice speaking.
    Thanks in regard

    Hi marcmarc
You can purchase Route66 Mobile 7 for Symbian S60 v2/3 here:
    http://www.66.com/route66/products.php?cid=UK&sec=13&ssec=1&prodid=1747
If you want to use internal GPS on N95 instead of external then you may need update if version not v7.3.545 from here:
    http://www.66.com/route66/support.php?cid=UK&sec=1&ssec=4
    Current Maps = v1.2 wk37 b05
If you don't have a cheap data plan then perhaps there is more incentive to go for Route 66.
I have to say in the UK despite requiring an external BT GPS receiver, I prefer the TomTom Navigator 6 mapping.

  • How do I use GPS and Maps on my new Nokia N95?

    Hi everyone.
Apologies if my questions seem very stupid
I have read my manuals but don't understand how to use the GPS or to use maps. (FYI - I live in Australia).
-When I go to the menu, and click onto Maps, it loads up a picture of the world but nothing happens. There is a little wavey line thing in the top right corner that moves - does this mean it is searching for a position?
-Someone said everyone needs to make sure their GPS Receiver is turned on - what does this mean?
-Is there anything I need to download before I can use maps or GPS?
-Am I just supposed to go outside after clicking on maps, and wait for it to find a position?
-Do I need to download anything?
Thanks everyone. I am just so confused about how this actually works and can't seem to find any basic instructions or information.
    Thanks, Doc

    Hi doc18
Firstly if you are using v12.0.013 software on your N95 it is a lot quicker to obtain fix with A-GPS feature, although an active connection via WLAN or Network is needed. The symbol for this is a bit like two curtailed arrowheads at top right of screen.
There is an updated version of Nokia Maps 1.0 available:
    http://europe.nokia.com/A4509291
Go outside away from buildings and tress with clear view of sky. Open slider and hold phone at 45degrees, don't cover "#" key as GPS antenna beneath it. Low cloud or rain will make satellite acquisition a lot longer.
If you go to Menu > Tools > GPS data > (searching for + calculating data) > Position > Options > Satellite status
This shows any number of satellites up to five - empty rectangle = not locked on - black filled rectangle = signal acquired; you need a minimum of 3 solid bars for lock-on and triangulation to work!
If you return to using Nokia Maps application the "red cross" disappears off satellite icon bottom right of screen when locked on.

  • Is there a facility to put a GPS aerial on the N95...

I got the N95 really in order to have a neat GPS/OS map system for hill walking and a phone in one and have just been trying my N95 with some OS 1:25000 and 1:50000 maps from Viewranger (excellent mapping product, excellent service). Walking about with the phone open in your hand to maintain GPS reception is a pain - I wonder if there is the facility to have a simple wire GPS aerial like a headphone wire for FM reception so the phone could be in your pocket (except when you wanted to check the map) and the wire outside? Bluetooth would drain the battery too much, especially if GPS was running. One other option would be a case like an IPOD case that runners use, strapped to your arm to leave your hands free - perhaps those are available - anyone know the answer to these two questions?
Idea for Nokia - how about making the maps downloadable by country - for example Europe is a whopping 1.4GB and took me more than an hour to download, fortunately to my PC. To be able to download just single or multiple countries would be great.

I use mine all the time The battery outlasts the N95 battery and can charge via a USB cable mains 250v ac or 12 v dc all supplied with mine
and it lets 2 devices to connect IE have have the N95 connect to carkit via bluetooth but it also connects to Holux so I get navigation on the car ice
Does this GPS receiver work with Nokia Maps? If it does, how do you get the phone to use it instead of its internal GPS receiver?
    T-mobile please give us v.20 N95 software.

  • N95 8GB with external GPS receiver

Not being too happy with the internal receiver on my N95 I bought and external one (HBTGPSOL BT Solar GPS Bluetooth GPS Receiver by Hamletcom.com).
It is very easy to connect by bluetooth but I cannot figure how to switch the phone from using the internal receiver to the bluetooth one.
    Any ideas ???
Message Edited by linwood on 23-Jun-2008 12:15 PM

You will get a meassage asking you whether or not you want to activate bluetooth everytime you run Maps. If you say yes, it goes to bluetooth if you say no it goes to the internal GPS receiver.
There is no real need to disable the others.
