GPU diode sensor problem?

The GPU diode temperature is -128C  (temperature monitor) and blank (istatpro).
After some heavy use, the two programs are showing some readings, but the GPU diode temperature is much lower than the others (CPU, Heatsink, etc).
Is this a problem of the sensor?
(macbookpro 17”, early 2011).
Thnxs for your help.

Hi,
I know this is an old thread - but I came across it while searching for info as to why my precious MBP had the same issue. I believe I may have an answer, so wanted to post.
I noticed that the bug is not related to iStat as every other temp app I have used says the same thing. I also know it's not a sensor problem as I have run the Apple diag disk and a friend of mine who works in an Apple shop took a look and he says there's no problem either.
I downloaded gfxcardstatus as suggested in this thread, and I can see that when using the intel HD card, the temp is ~110c, when using the 330M it's ~50c, but here's the weird thing - when I try to switch to intel when certain apps are running, I get a warning saying that I cannot do this. If you click on the [Why?] button, you are taken to an explanation on the author's site, which says that the discreet card is never really turned off when certain apps are running - ie. 2 cards.... so I believe that the ~110c is a COMBINED reading for both cards which are running together but should not be. It's quite plausible that the intel HD would be running at ~60c, so there's your 110c.
Here's a pic of the authors site explaining the issue -
The best option would appear to be to keep it on the discreet card.
I hope this helps put other's minds at rest!!
PS. For me, the trigger apps are Little Snitch and iStat Menus.

  • -127 GPU Diode...

    Hello Fellas,
I was just doing simple safari work, youtubing, and ichat. Just about 20-30 minutes I've always used istat nano widget from dashboard to monitor my temperature usage, then I just wanted to check my temperature if it's okay cos it was getting warm (not hot) just warm. And suddenly I saw GPU Diode -127F, I immediately surfed the web to see if it's a normal reading, I couldn't find much so I decided to restart my computer. Mind you, I just got this Mid-2010 macbook pro 15" i5 like 2 weeks ago so I figured there shouldn't be any problems and it's not a refurbish one either. Brand new. Anyways, back on topic, I saw the GPU Diode -127F, I restarted my laptop and the GPU Diode is gone. SO I read up some forums, saying the istat nano widget might be outdated so I got rid of it and reinstalled the new version 3 istat pro menu up at the menu bar because I bought it for $16. They make you pay for it now after 14 days so I figured why not since it's updated and you pay for it, probably better quality. So far I haven't seen the GPU Diode, I was just wondering if anyone has had that with the istat nano widget. Is it something I should bring to the apple store to check anything? Since this is my first mac and all, tend to worry especially when it's an almost 2k worth of machine. I even called up apple and the guy said it's fine but the minus sign do worry me quite a bit. Thanks hope to get some replies soon

You know how the new v3 of istat menu has a sensor where you adjust the fans? How is yours adjusted to a reasonable speed for your macbook pro? I don't want to mess with it and damage my fan. So I was wondering how yours is done. I noticed there is a "Default" & "Medium". I'm not sure how it goes about. I am enjoying my new machine lol it's just that I don't want to damage it so that's why I'm asking around. It's worth almost 2k, should be careful with it and all being my first mac. And do you leave your ac adapter in your macbook pro all the time? I remove it when I go to school, I don't use the ac adapter at school. I downloaded coconutbattery, it says my laptop is 3 months old. When I first got it, there was 2 count cycles, so far there's 8 count cycles. Is that okay? I've only used 6 cycles, by far.

  • Hot GPU diode and noisy fan - 3600rpm

After an hour my iMAC's GPU diode is running at 88° and the CPU fan is noisy at 3600rpm. I have taken it to an Apple certified reseller and they couldn't find anything wrong. Can anyone help suggest a reason why it is running hot and noisy?

Hello davemo73 I have the right the same problem, I have taken to an Apple certified support and they told me that is everything all right with my iMac, when I arrived in my home an surprise! the same issue... noisy fan and rpms too fast. Im really worried about, I dont wanna to change the logical board (60% of imac, too much expensive in my country, like a $1100,00 half cost of new machine.).
Can someone from Apple help us? PLS I'm going crazy!!!

  • GPU Diode runs extremely hot?

I just bought a MacBook Pro and downloaded Civilizations V. I play at 1280*1080 fullscreen resolution with the lowest graphics settings. My computer (non retina display) has a Nvidia GeForce GT 650M graphics processor with 1 GB VRAM, Intel HD Graphics 4000, 1680 * 1050 resolution, 8 GB RAM, 2.7 GhZ quad-core processor, and a solid-state drive, so I thought playing on the lowest settings with a 1280*1080 fullscreen wouldn't tax it too much, but the GPU runs from 160-170 F and the GPU diode, whatever that is, is 180-185 F, which is worrisome to me. Usually the how-to guides say to clean your computer and stuff to cool it better, but my computer is 2 days old and my room is not dusty so I doubt that's the cause. I haven't downloaded any strange applications or anything. Interestingly, when I played with the highest graphics settings and resolution, it did not seem to raise the temperature of the GPU diode any further. Also, when I brought my big fan next to the computer and placed it on high speed, it didn't lower the temperature of the GPU diode. So maybe iStat pro is wrong, however, when I touch the top of my keyboard (above all the keys and right next to the screen) it is very hot to the touch. Is something wrong with my computer? Is 185 F safe for a GPU diode, and 175 safe for a GPU, and 145 for a CPU heatsink? Should I just not play this game?

    Hi ns180.
I've read your post and I see that I have a similar problem.
I run the Civilization V in an iMac 24 in and my Graphic Processor Diode reaches the 90 ºC (194 F). When this happen I left the game immediately. I've recently change (for second time) my hard disk and probably the last two were damage by the heat, so when I change the disk, of course, I cleaned the circuits with isopropyl alcohol and spay them with compressed air. I´m running recently, just after the last repair, the Temperature Monitor and SMC Fan Control and for sure it doesn't matter what I do, I can't reduce the temperature of the GPD. In fact, I'm writing right now, only using the Firefox and GPD is in 80 ºC. The back of the iMac, the left up corner, is very hot all the time. I put an exterior fan, a big one, and nothing... I'ts still hot the GPD. This means that I can cool the exterior of the Mac, but never the interior.
My conclusions for the moment is that may be the GPD is damaged and the best possibility is trying to change it or find other way to cool the interior of the Mac.
    Greetings from Mexico.

  • IMac fan / sensor problem

    Hello!
Some days ago I automatically sent my iMac to sleep via the "Energy Saver --> Schedule" menu in the systems preferences. When I woke it up the next morning, the CPU fan didn't just blow once and ran quietly in the background as usual, but it keeps blowing at max. speed which is really loud and annoying.
So I went to search for the problem and found it right away possibly: the GPU heatsink temperature sensor constantly reports 126-127 degrees Celsius, which is quite impossible I ran the quick hardware test with the startup disk and got the following error code: 4SNS/1/40000000: TG0H-127.875 - which indicates a sensor problem as well I think.
My question is, if there is anything I can do to regulate the fan or the sensor by software. All I found was several programs that can regulate the minimum rotation per minute, but not change the maximum. As there isn't really much damaged (as far as I know now just one out of three GPU sensors), it would be really annoying to have to let it repaired. I'm not playing graphics intensive games, so it won't ever get too hot.
Anyway, right as it is now, it just freaks me out and just leaving it that way is clearly not an option.
    Thanks for your help
    Michael

Yes I see what you mean all the other temps are fine so I think your original guess of a sensor problem is probably right. You are covered by warranty so I'd contact Apple to complain about it. BTW if you haven't already I would recommend purchasing AppleCare before your 1 year warranty is up.

  • Unexpected shutdowns / high GPU diode temperatures / new RAM?

Hi there, all. First time posting on the discussion forum.
My problem started earlier. I ordered some additional RAM for the new World of Warcraft expansion and put it in today. Here's the RAM in question, from the place I got it from:
    http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.aspx?imodule=CT25664AC667
I used their locator tool, input my computer (24" iMac, 2.33ghz, late 2007), and that's what it gave me. Just to be safe I cross-checked it with the RAM specs necessary that I found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423
As far as I could tell, this all checked out. I ordered the RAM and installed it today with little effort. I did notice that the levers for popping out/securing the RAM were a little hard to move. It seemed like they were an awfully tight fit, and sometimes were touching the sodimms as they moved in and out. Nevertheless everything fit in and clicked. I removed one of the 1gb sodimms I had by default and installed my new 2gb sodimm, for a total of 3gb.
After that I rebooted and checked system profiler. It registered 3gb of memory and said both modules were working OK. I checked iStat Pro and it also showed 3gb of memory. I noticed a pretty substantial performance increase in WoW, which is what I was looking for, so I assumed everything was fine. I played WoW all day, from about 12:00 noon to midnight off and on. No problems.
Around midnight, my computer shut down. No warning at all. I thought it was a power outage of some kind; either a cord was loose, my power strip was out, etc. That's how sudden and weird it was. I checked my cords, unplugged the power, plugged it back in, and rebooted.
About 5 minutes later, it happened again. I repeated this 3-4 times. Each time I booted up, checked to make sure the RAM was working properly, fired up WoW, and it would crap out very shortly afterward.
After a few repeats of this I started looking at my temperatures in iStat Pro. I noticed that the GPU Diode was significantly higher than the others - in the 170 degrees Fahrenheit / 70 degrees Celsius range. I watched them closely as I rebooted, and I figured out that as soon as the GPU Diode temperature got into the 170f/70c range my computer would die instantly.
Did some research on these forums and elsewhere, and discovered reports of a pretty widespread issue of GPUs overheating on the Intel iMacs, with an identical response: instant shutdown at a critical temperature.
The computer geek in me says that this is a problem with the RAM. However, system profiler and iStat Pro all say the RAM is functioning properly. And if the problem does have to do with the GPU, as the temperatures seem to indicate, is that connected to the RAM?
Anyway. I unplugged my system and reseated the RAM just to be sure everything was fitted properly. I think that one of the sodimms may have been loose. I made double sure everything clicked into place this time, and as of this writing WoW has been running for 35 minutes with no hitches. The GPU Diode temperature went as high as 190f/90c, but my computer didn't shut down. Now the GPU Diode has calmed down to a more reasonable 160f/70c, and it's hovering there.
Anybody have any input? The problem has gone away for the moment, but my temperatures are still pretty high and I'm a little nervous. Should I take it in to the Apple store? I have Applecare, so it certainly wouldn't hurt.

    Hi arco311
It does sound like you may have dislodged the remaining 1GB module or not fully seated the new 2GB module. If you have any more issues that seem to be ram related, reinstall the ram pushing real hard on each of the modules with both thumbs and then close the ejector clips.
There are three fans in the Intel iMac (CPU/GPU, HD and Optical Drive) and you may want to experiment with smcFanControl 2.1.3. Then run up only the CPU/GPU fan speed a couple hundred RPM to see if that helps to keep the GPU down in the 160 to 170 range.

  • MacBookPro 15" 1.1: Strange GPU temp sensor behaviour

    Hello to all,
Since I let my trusty MBP alone for a week two months ago some real strange behaviour occured.
I left my MBP in standby as usual. When I came back from my trip, the battery was completely discharged and I had to connect the power adapter. MBP awoke from suspend to disk (grey screen, progress bar) and a few seconds after beeing ready for work, fans started to rev up. 5 min later the fans were running at full speed.
Puzzled, I did a restart. Same behaviour, high RPM right after boot logo, full 6000rpm after a few minutes.
When I took a look at iStatMenus I saw that the GPU Heatsink Sensor Temperature was around 35 degrees Celsius (around 70 Fahrenheit) higher than the GPU Temp sensor itself. It was the highest readout by all sensors, which makes no sense at all.
I tried: PRAM reset, SMC reset, PMU reset. Apple Hardware Diagnostic CD by me and a German ASP, and by a Genius Bar expert. No errors shown.
But over the two months the difference between the values sank to 18-20deg Celsius, and I found a tool to let only the CPU sensor control the fan, so I was happy again.
Yesterday I came back from another trip, guess what: battery empty, woke up from standby..... the difference is now around 36 deg Celsius, and the MBP shuts down automatically even on the smallest YouTube clip when GPU Heatsink Temp exceeds around 86deg Celcius.
I am clueless, everybody around me too. So maybe one of you has an idea?
    Regards, Matthias

Not sure about sensors adapting to reality by themselves. This sounds like very strange behavior. I wonder if there could be something like a loose connection somewhere.
Did the computer misbehave in front of the genius? If it didn't, it might be worth while seeing if you can determine the exact circumstances under which it will act up so you can make it act up in front of the genius.
For example, my iBook used to freeze, but only when warmed up. I went to the genius bar early so I could give it time to warm up so that it would be sure to malfunction in front of them. This is especially important to do if you are still under warranty. It's important to establish that a problem first occurred under warranty, especially if your warranty is close to running out.
    Good luck!

    Dear Apple
iPhone 4 ***** !!! 4.1 still doesnt fix the prox.sensor problems and every 2nd call or so is interrupted by this problem, how do fix it an what should I do now and what are you doing to fix it ????

We are iphone users like you.
As provided, you are not addressing Apple here.
The iphone has a one year warranty. If yours is defective then Apple replace.
Contact Apple to arrange for this.

  • Is apple ever going to respond to proximity sensor problems?

apple has responded to the antenna problem, how about this one? i HATE my iphone becaus eof the proximity sensor problem. i hang up on calls all the time.

I had the same problem. I took it to the Apple Store. The man helping me said that the sensor was hardware. No software fix he was aware of. I demonstrated the problem to him. He brought out a store phone to compare to. He simply said "I'm sold" and he brought me a new phone immediately. He also placed mine in a special case with my name printed out on the label to be sent to Apple so that they could examine the phone and try to learn more. Indeed, I believe that they are concerned, but I also believe that they will have to have more returns before it becomes a serious issue to them. By the way, my new phone is "better" but I still occasionally "Cheek dial" or hang up on people. I have found that sliding the phone back a bit so that my ear canal is not directly over the sensor works, and I can still hear the call. Hopefully a software fix WILL resolve this, since a reset has helped some.

  • Lenovo G550 GPU temperature sensor

    Hi everyone,
I have lenovo G550 laptop and there is a problem with GPU (NVIDIA GeForce G210M) temperature sensor. So, when i turn on laptop the sensor is showing 'bout 70°C and when i run some programs like Chrome, paint etc. the temperature jumps over 95 °C. But the problem is that laptop is COLD , temperature is OK.  The air from fan is COLD, not warm.
I have opened it and cleaned it from dust, it's clean like in pharmacy store.  When temperature reach 100°C the laptop turns off automatically but it is still cold :/.
. I updated BIOS and it's even worse :/  sensor on start show 90°C and then raising :/. I also tried serval diferent versions of NVIDIA drivers.
So,  maybe it's hardware problem with sensor, and i'm wondering is there anyway to deal with it? Or how can i set the the max value of temperature where laptop shut down automaticallly (there is no such option in BIOS) ?
    Thank you.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I solved it,
the problem was in thermal paste and some protective  nylon over GPU. The nylon was detached on some parts  and I removed it at all. Then noticed that there is a litle bit of thermal paste on one of the components on GPU. I cleared it, and temperature is 50°C. The thermal paste probably covered temperature sensor and cause a false reading of sensor.

  • GPU Diode above 90 C?

Hey guys, this morning I logged onto Starcraft 2 on my Macbook pro(13-inch/2012) just to see if my buddies were online and after 5 min my GPU temp diode rose up to 98 C. Is this a problem? I wasn't even in-game, just in the menus. My macbook is less than 1 month old.
    2.9GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7
    8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    256GB Solid State Drive

    Yes, that is a problem.
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

  • AWM CPU, GPU & NET Sensors

Just a note- this is a repost from another thread which you may have seen floating around... I posted in the wrong section....
But... can anyone please help me get my sensors working on AWM... I've honestly read the wikis more times than I can remember and have exhausted my patience. I just need cpu, gpu and net sensors running on my status bar.
I think one of the problems I'm having is not being sure exactly where to drop the codes within rc.lua so I restart and get error codes. Anyone interested in taking a stab at it I can share my code and start out with something simple like cpu frequency. If I can get that running I"m sure I'll figure out the rest.
    Any other info just ask.
    Thanks.

  • Magnetic Carry Case + Proximity Sensor Problem

I noticed a problem with magnetic carry case and the proximity sensor being disabled in 10.1 for my Z10 STL100-3 as well as my wife's STL100-1.
When removing the phone from the case, to make or answer a call, the sensor is disabled. Thus, you easily touch the keys with your face. When NOT using the magnetic carry case, no issue. Seems like the magnetic sensor was disabling the proximity sensor.
Now, using 10.2, it appears the problem has been resolved. But will monitor over the next few days.

Who installed the new screen? You should take the phone back to them and have them fix it.
