GPU Failure

After some googling I believe I have a Nvidea GPU failure. I did a factory restore a while ago and when I went to re-install all of my updates the same issue happened again. My issue was I could not get into windows all I saw was colourful streaks.
I'm aware lots of people had issues with this a few years ago- is there any way I can resolve it? Any advice to fix my laptop? I can still access it if I do another factory restore!
I have a dv9500/ dv9657em windows vista 32-bit

You cannot fix a hardware problem with software. Although your model was technically never part of the recall or class action, those of us who work on them know that the dv9500 and higher models also are prone to the same failure from the nVidia chip.
The best fix is to have the video chip "reballed" (not reflowed) by a competent repair shop. There are many on ebay and on the internet which use very expensive machinery to fix the motherboard at the component level. If you can remove the board and send them just that, the price is as low as $60-75 for the service. Don't let some guy tell you he can bake it in the oven or blast it with a hot air gun. These methods can work, but only temporarily.
Here is the Service Manual if you want to remove the motherboard:
Manual
Here is a "reball" shop on eBay:

There are other similar shops and I have no affiliation with these guys. Call them and talk to them and if you are not comfortable post back and we can find you someone else.

  • MBP 2011 GPU failure or software problem?

    Hello there,
since Januari 1, 2015 my Macbook Pro 15" (purchased in 2011) is having major problems! How things started:
I was just watching a movie on Netflix, pauzed it, went to the toilet and when I came back my MBP had a black screen. I could hear the fans working (when I pressed my head against the keyboard) but it did not respond to anything. All I could do was a hard reboot.
After reboot I got the Apple logo, but the screen looked not as smooth as before. When I looked closer I saw very thin, horizontal lines (color pink/brown?) across the entire screen. These lines were not perfect. They had a small break in the middle. After the Apple screen I got different results:
    - White/Grey or maybe very pale blue-ish screen -> Does nothing behind this
-----> This is also the most frequent result of a boot
    - Normal blue screen -> Checkered screen -> Back to the blue screen to end with a Kernel Panic screen
Since a few days I can "normally" boot again but it crashes after a while. I don't know what the trigger is. It may be coincidence but it always crashed when I tried to go on the internet or used an application wich used the airport (also used a cable). Maybe important to mention is that this "normal" boot happens after the "checkered" screen mentioned above.
-----> The "crash" in this normal boot happens like this:
    - Total freeze of the MBP
    - Crashes on a black screen (like I had before)
    - Crashes on a dark blue/purple(?) screen -> This is also the most frequent crash after a "normal" boot and happens faster and faster.
Safe boot: Sometimes a normal screen but most of the time a screen with pink, very low resolution bands (vertical) across the screen.
When I tried searching for solutions on the internet I immediately came across this:
    http://www.mbp2011.com/
The screens show exactly what I'm experiencing. The culprit in this case: GPU failure.
BUT, isn't it strange I don't have any glitching (apart from the boot in safe mode, the Apple Logo and the checkered screen) or distortion on my screen, that it sometimes has a clear screen, like nothing is wrong? Unlike many of the people with the GPU failure, I CAN boot the MBP with a normal screen, only it isn't very stable and it is only occasionally.
    Things I've done so far:
    1. Reinstall OS X (10.6.7) from the original installation disc.
    2. I have tried NVRAM and PRAM (cmd+option+P+R), no change.
    3. Verbose-mode (cmd+V). (the last thing I could see was something about the Airport) I did this 2 times. First time it crashed on a black screen after the Verbose-mode. Second time it got stuck on the grey screen.
    4. Single-user Mode (cmd+S). Everything looked fine, no errors on hard disk.
    5. Start in Safe Mode. (Shift). The bar doesn't load until the end but it boots in safe mode, but with the pink bars on the screen
    6. Re-apply of thermal paste on GPU
The programmer at our work has over 30 years of experience with Apple and has never seen something like this. He also doesn't understand why it would be a hardware failure, because the glitches are "symmetrical", it can boot "normally" and he can't find anything wrong with it. He is now looking for something in the software wich may cause the MBP to crash. Could it just be a software problem? As I said before: It could be a coincidence but the crashes (after a "normal" boot) always appeared after trying to connect to the internet, using the internet or using an application that uses the internet (like the App Store -> I was trying to download Yosemite, it crashed around 70% of the download). And in Verbose mode the last line said something about the Airport and then it crashed.
My MBP is a Macbook Pro 15" (bought in July 2011), 2 GHz Intel Core i7, 4 GB 1333 MHz DD3
AMD Radeon HD 6490M, Part nr. MC721FN/A.
I am running Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8
I spent the last two weeks on the internet to understand that if it is indeed the GPU that is failing, the replacement of the entire Logic Board is necessary, wich is VERY expensive... This cost would be more or less ok for me, but I read about failing after replacement, a LOT. Why would I pay so much money for a repair that only lasts just over 90 days? That is ridiculous!
Sorry for spelling/grammar mistakes, English isn't my first language and really thank you in advance. This MBP is impossible to replace (no money...) so I hope someone can help me.
Ask away if I did not provide any information that is necessary for troubleshooting.

    Anyone?

  • Nvidia 8600 GPU failure no longer covered?

Is anyone else getting denied for coverage on Nvidia GPU failures? I went into the Apple Store today, and they confirmed a Nvidia failure, but said it was not covered anymore. Does anyone else get confirmation, but no coverage, eventhough they got $200 million from Nvidia?

There are many comments about the NVIDIA GPU issue and Apple not replacing the GPU.  I will say I had good success in getting Apple to replace mine in my Macbook Pro. When my computer suddenly would not fully turn on, I researched the issue to find out the possible reasons and then somewhat dawdled in taking it in. It was 2 weeks past the 4-year GPU warranty window. But I had had problems for some time preceding when it wouldn't fully turn on, such as geo designs appearing on the screen and the screen going dark, and those issues did occur at least a month or more before my warranty ended. I had no idea what those issues meant and simply ignored them until the computer wouldn't fully turn on.
The good folks at The Apple store in Austin initially said no luck; yes it's the GPU but it's two weeks past the warranty. But then they kindly relented because clearly the symptoms I described to them that occurred during the warranty were caused by the faulty GPU. How would I know this was the issue?  They replaced the logic board at no cost. I've seen comments here that a Genius said the problem was the logic board, not the GPU, and therefore Apple would not make the repair. I was told by my Genius that the GPU is partof the logic board, and therefore the logic board needed replacing. This was a $526 repair that I was grateful Apple took care of. I would not have made the repair and would have gone out and bought a new non-Apple computer with a warranty.
When I got my computer back, I checked it before I left the Apple store and it was running slow. I ended up paying Apple to replace the hard drive, so ultimately I did pay for an Apple repair. But I'm a happy rather than disappointed Apple customer because of the free GPU repair. Happy, devoted customers has made Apple a great company, and it should be worth it to the company to fix the faulty GPUs that are close to warranty to keep customers and keep them happy.

  • R61 Nvidia GPU failure

My r61's NVIDIA GPU failed. It looks like there is a precedence of NVIDIA GPU failure in R61 and T61.
When I power on the R61, the screen is blank.
    What are my options?
    Thanks.

You might bake the system board - long-lasting success doubtful
You might replace the system board by a working one with NVIDIA GPU - riskfully if the GPU is produced before August 2008
You might contact a repair provider who solders a new GPU to your mainboard - good option if you need the GPU power, but there are conterfeit NVIDIA chips, so choose the repair provider carefully.
You might replace the system board by a working one with Intel GPU - the best option
Depending on the form factor of your R61, you can also use a system board of a R400/R500, but modifications will be needed.
You might buy a newer ThinkPad. Good option because you'll get DDR3 RAM and probably a display with LED backlight.
In an unlikely case, your problem isn't caused by the NVIDIA GPU

  • HT203254 MBP Logic board failure or GPU failure?  Apparently it's simple to test...

I have a 2008 Macbook Pro 15" (2.2Ghz) with NVidia 8600M GT graphics chip.  Last month it failed, no longer booting up.  The fans start, the LED light comes on, but the keyboard, hard drive and screen fail to come on. After reading article TS2377 I was convinced that the symptoms described match those on my MBP, so I took it to the nearest Apple store.  The 'genius' at the 'genius bar' (cringe) took it away then came back and told me that the problem was with the logic board, not the GPU.  They diagnosed this by removing the RAM and seeing if the RAM failure beeps sounded.  Seeing as there was no sound they diagnosed that the logic board was the source of failure because the RAM test comes before the GPU test in the boot sequence.  This test is so simple surely it should be posted under article TS2377???
I must say that I'm completely unconvinced by the diagnosis, but who can argue with a 'genius'?  I'd really appreciate it if someone on here could give me a second opinion?  Even if they turn out to be right I think I might take out the logic board to see if there's evidence that the GPU has fried the logic board...

  • Macbook Pro 17" early 2011 Discrete GPU failure

Hi, before I start, this is the serial of my MBP so you can identify the exact model.
    MBP 17" Core i7 2.2 Ghz serial number C0*******F92
My Macbook pro 17" (early 2011) started to freeze once a month, but then, it started getting worse.  I narrowed down the problem to the discrete GPU graphic engine as I was able to disable the automatic switching and be able to use the system with most of the programs.
I googled around and learned that this problem happens to all early/mid 2011 MBP and iMac models that use AMD 6750M engie (if I recall well).
When the system is on automatic graphic switching mode, whatever app you use that requires the graphic engine switch (VMWare Fusion, Photoshop, iPhoto, etc), causes the system screen to freezes.  The system although unstable, keep working as I am able to log into the system via SSH.  Trying to reboot via shell (sudo reboot) won't work as there is some frozen process preventing it, but system is alive.
You have to power cycle the MBP between 2 and 6 times to be able to get it to boot as most of them time it freezes during the boot process.
I want to know if there is an apple warranty to this problem ( I don't have apple care on this machine).  If not, what will be the cost of the logic board replacement and how is the procedure to get it done.  I live outside of the US and can send the machine if needed.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regrds.

  • GPU failure-like issue in OS X 10.10 Yosemite

It recalls a GPU problem, what should i do?

In OS X 10.10 Yosemite how do I delete the receipts for ALL previous software/update downloads. The software tells me I have multiple installs of 10.10.1 but the version remains at 10.10.
I also get the "Available updates have changed.
On another note I have a copy of Apple Remote Desktop which I purchased long before Apple endeavoured to get too clever with its app store. Because it cannot find it in my list of recently purchased software it does not update it. Which is fine as it is at the latest level I need anyway. I just want the update software to forget about it. In the good old days when Apple software was decent one could tick a box to say "do not show this software in updates". Now there is no provision for this.
OK whinge over. The most important thing is to delete the list of installed updates. That would set me back to zero. I guess worst case scenario I could re-install but was looking for a more elegant approach.
    Cheers
With iWorks, iLife, and Aperture, Apple did provide a means for the App Store to 'adopt' installs made from non-App Store sources e.g. a DVD. You could then use the App Store to get further updates.
Sadly with Remote Desktop Apple have not done the same thing. In theory Software Update will find updates for the old DVD originated version, but you can download the latest 3.7.2 Admin updater here Apple Remote Desktop 3.7.2 Admin
Most software receipts are now not stored in /Library/Receipts but rather in /private/var/db/receipts

  • 2007 macbook pro nvidia gpu failure?

    Hi,
What are the symptoms of a failed nvidia gpu on the 2007/2008 macbook pros? My 2007 machine has been displaying a pattern of green "pixels" over the entire screen while stopping to respond to keyboard/trackpad input. Is it likely that this is due to the GPU failing?
Thanks for any advice or similar stories.
    SL

Thanks, I saw this page and called a local apple service center. They said that they would need to have my machine for a while to run a diagnostic test, but if it turned out not to be the GPU that I would be on the hook for a $47.50 service charge. It it was the GPU, the apple would pick up the bill and the repair charges. I'm trying to get an idea of how likely my machine has a faulty GPU before leaving it with them. In addition to the machine becoming unresponsive and a pattern of big green pixels appearing, it develops some additional symptoms:
    - seems to get hot with the fans going loud
    - it takes many tries to restart
    - while trying to restart, green pattern of pixels shows up in the apple logo and the spinning indicator (when this happens, the machine does not start up successfully, just keeps trying)
    - during on of the "freezes" with the pattern of big green pixels, it appeared to continue to copy files (started to copy a big directory from on external disk to another) and did a time machine backup
    - when finally successful in starting up again, iStat Pro showed that the GPU was running at about 70 C

  • Satellite A200-1GB: ATI HD2600 glitches and GPU failure

    Hi,
    I have a Toshiba A200-1GB with Windows 7 x86.
I tried every ATI drivers from toshiba website, new and older, and the screen becomes weird, ATIKMDAG fails and recovers until BSOD comes up, then when I restart the laptop screen keeps black,
I can only see the screen by connecting external monitor, however the same glitches appear on that monitor, so I believe that it's not a screen problem.
I'm running windows 7 now with built-in drivers only (from windows update), and I played a game for 1 hour with no problems, if I install catalyst with latest drivers it keeps doing the same, so basically I would like to know if this is a hardware problem or software problem. The GPU temperature does not pass from 47C.
Please check the 2 videos that I recorded with fraps on dropbox. When the video becomes whole black, that's when the ATIKMDAG failed and got recovered.
    Videos link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/bmtm437o3rsost6/PkllwdMSNy

I noticed that with windows 7 drivers the GPU temperature can be displayed, I installed the latest drivers from toshiba (2009) yesterday and the GPU temperature is no longer shown.
I played a game for 1 hour and had no problems at all. It's really weird,
I also did a RAM test with memtest86 and no erros were found. I believe that the GPU is starting to fail or there is a lack of power.
Other thing:when the glitches and BSOD came up I had to turn off the laptop by pressing the power button, then when I restarted, the laptop screen didn't turn on but I could hear the windows logon sound, I could only see the display by connecting an external monitor.
However if I unplug the power cord from the laptop for 10s and remove the battery and plug again the power cord, the laptop screen works fine with no need for an external monitor.

  • Recovering Rescue and Recovery data from a T61p with the GPU failure problem

My t61p has the GPU (1 long 2 short beeps) problem described in another thread. Apart from getting the laptop fixed, which will take several weeks, I have a more pressing problem getting my data back from this laptop.
I have been using Lenovo Rescue and Recovery religiously for the last two years to create monthly incremental backups on a USB drive. While I am trying to get my laptop repaired, I would like to at least recover my files from the backup and start working on a different machine.
I was told by Lenovo support that the only way to get to the data is to connect the drive to another T61p, running the exact same version of Rescue and Recovery I had on my original T61p. For one, I have to idea what version of R&R  I had on my laptop. Secondly, I am in no position to get another T61p just to recover the data.
I would have thought that there would be a version of R&R that I could run on any Windows machine, and recover the data, but apparently that's not so.
Does anyone have any suggestions about how I can recover my data?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
the basic and most importatnt information, in this case is, that RnR can detect/read backups that have been captured using the very same version as you are using right now.
So in case you captured your backup using version xx.xx.xxx1 you cannot restore, or recover your backup using the version xx.xx.xxx2. You need to us the very same version.
As Win7 uses different version of RnR, this is the root cause.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers

  • Apple Manufacturer Warranty Cover GPU Failure?

I've bought a macbook pro from a local computer store, it was used.
It worked fine for 3 months then one day screen started flickering when i played videos.

Will I still be able to bring it to Genius Bar at apple store?
You can always bring it to a Genius Bar at an Apple Store. For both in-warranty (no charge) and out-of-warranty service (usually paid of course). For in-warranty service, nothing should stop you from making an appointment because you are fully entitled to it.
You should be checking with Apple, not us, for warranty eligibility information.
Apple even has a web page where you can check the serial number yourself right now. Go here and put in your serial number:
Check Your Service and Support Coverage
But again, even after the warranty runs out, you should have no fear of taking it to a Genius Bar. In the worst case scenario, they will simply say it is not covered but can usually still fix it for a fee. In the best case scenario, Apple will sometimes (no guarantees) perform service on out-of-warranty devices at no charge. Even my friend's out-of-warranty Mac Pro. So you do not need to check here. Verify warranty eligibility on the web site, then bring it in to the Apple Store.

  • Mid-2012 retina macbook pro nvidia gpu panics

I bought my mid-2012 retina macbook pro in September 2012. It is 8 months out of warranty. I always look after it and use it carefully. Since 2 weeks ago, I encountered the problems below,
1.turn into black screen after running for about 15 mins, but the system is still running because the keyboard is still functional. After reboot, i record the log as below, it shows that it is a GPU Panic.
    2. display would not turn on after pressing the power button but can still hear the apple start up chime and the system keep running with the screen
    off.
    3. after erased the hard drive and re-installed Mavericks. Under a new installed system, it can run normally for about 1 day, after that especially after a shut down or restart, the problems above came back.
I am currently working in Thailand but I have no plan to go back to the US in a short period of time. I brought the laptop to the local apple service, they said it is certainly the logic board or GPU failure and the parts need to be replaced. The cost of the replacement is around half of the price that I paid for this laptop. I feel really disappointed so I called apple telephone service if there is anything that they can help. However, instead of helping me allocate the cause of these problems, the suggestion I received is to buy a new Mac Book and accept the fact that I am just unlucky in this case. This is the first time in my life to encounter mother board or GPU failure excluding artificial damage, they are supposed to be reliable espeically under the name of Apple. It is just so hard for me to accept it.
Below is the system message of the problem, it would be much appreciated if anyone can give me some suggestion that can help me to fix my problem at the lowest cost. Thank you very much.
