GPU heatsink for 8710w with FX 3600

Hi
My laptop p/n is KE191EA#AK8
I'm looking for a GPU heatsink for my laptop, the old one has 1 broken heatpipe and it gets quite hot.
HP Tech support personnel keep repeating the same message over and over again.
"The correct part number is 450594-001"
This part is the incorrect one, there is no doubt about it. I ordered the **bleep** part and it is not the same as the original. There are two key differences. The first one is that there is only a single heatpipe, my machine runs too hot with the current one heatpipe configuration. The second difference is that the plate that is pushed against the chips is different, and it won't cover all of the chips.
Replacing the part with that one could cause permanent damage to my computer, so I'm not going to even try using it.
(Sorry if I'm a bit frustrated, but I've been over this matter 5 times now..)
What is the correct part, anyone please!?
My laptop has the FX 3600 GPU if that makes any difference.

How do you plan on using a PCIe card with a laptop? Via a Thunderbolt PCIe adapter? I can't help with that. In fact, I didn't think those adapters were even out yet.
I do have a Mac Pro and I use the NVDIA Quadro 4000 For Mac. This works great for Premiere Pro. As good as the 4800 and for less money. Check out this comparison.

  • GPU notes for Lightroom CC (2015)

    Hi everyone,
I wanted to share some additional information regarding GPU support in Lr CC.
Lr can now use graphics processors (GPUs) to accelerate interactive image editing in Develop. A big reason that we started here is the recent development and increased availability of high-res displays, such as 4K and 5K monitors. To give you some numbers: a standard HD screen is 2 megapixels (MP), a MacBook Retina Pro 15" is 5 MP, a 4K display is 8 MP, and a 5K display is a whopping 15 MP. This means on a 4K display we need to render and display 4 times as many pixels as on a standard HD display. Using the GPU can provide a significant speedup (10x or more) on high-res displays. The bigger the screen, the bigger the win.
For example, on my test system with a 4K display, adjusting the White Balance and Exposure sliders in Lightroom 5.7 (without GPU support) is about 5 frames/second -- manageable, but choppy and hard to control. The same sliders in Lightroom 6.0 now run smoothly at 60 FPS.
So why doesn't everything feel faster?
Well, GPUs can be enormously helpful in speeding up many tasks. But they're complex and involve some tradeoffs, which I'd like to take a moment to explain.
First, rewriting software to take full advantage of GPUs is a lot of work and takes time. Especially for software like Lightroom, which offers a rich feature set developed over many years and release versions. So the first tradeoff is that, for this particular version of Lightroom, we weren't able to take advantage of the GPU to speed up everything. Given our limited time, we needed to pick and choose specific areas of Lightroom to optimize. The area that I started with was interactive image editing in Develop, and even then, I didn't manage to speed up everything yet (more on this later).
Second, GPUs are marvelous at high-speed computation, but there's some overhead. For example, it takes time to get data from the main processor (CPU) over to the GPU. In the case of high-res images and big screens, that can take a LOT of time. This means that some operations may actually take longer when using the GPU, such as the time to load the full-resolution image, and the time to switch from one image to another.
Third, GPUs aren't best for everything. For example, decompressing sequential bits of data from a file -- like most raw files, for instance -- sees little to no benefit from a GPU implementation.
Fourth, Lightroom has a sophisticated raw processing pipeline (such as tone mapping HDR images with Highlights and Shadows), and running this efficiently on a GPU requires a fairly powerful GPU. Cards that may work with in the Photoshop app itself may not necessarily work with Lightroom. While cards that are 4 to 5 years old may technically work, they may provide little to no benefit over the regular CPU when processing images in Lr, and in some cases may be slower. Higher-end GPUs from the last 2 to 3 years should work better.
So let's clear up what's currently GPU accelerated in Lr CC and what's not:
First of all, Develop is the only module that currently has GPU acceleration whatsoever. This means that other functions and modules, such as Library, Export, and Quick Develop, do not use the GPU (performance should be the same for those functions regardless of whether you have GPU enabled or disabled in the prefs).
Within Develop, most image editing controls have full GPU acceleration, including the basic and tone panel, panning and zooming, crop and straighten, lens corrections, gradients, and radial filter. Some controls, such as local brush adjustments and spot clone/heal, do not -- at least, not yet.
While the above description may be disappointing to some of you, let's be clear: This is the beginning of the GPU story for Lightroom, not the end. The vision here is to expand our use of the GPU and other technologies over time to improve performance. I know that many photographers have been asking us for improved performance for a long time, and we're trying to respond to that. Please understand this is a big step in that direction, but it's just the first step. The rest of it will take some time.
    Summary:
    1. GPU support is currently available in Develop only.
    2. Most (but not all) Develop controls benefit from GPU acceleration.
    3. Using the GPU involves some overhead (there's no free lunch). This may make some operations take longer, such as image-to-image switching or zooming to 1:1. Newer GPUs and computer systems minimize this overhead.
    4. The GPU performance improvement in Develop is more noticeable on higher-resolution displays such as 4K. The bigger the display, the bigger the win.
    5. Prefer newer GPUs (faster models within the last 3 years). Lightroom may technically work on older GPUs (4 to 5 years old) but likely will not benefit much. At least 1 GB of GPU memory. 2 GB is better.
    6. We're currently investigating using GPUs and other technologies to improve performance in Develop and other areas of the app going forward.
The above notes also apply to Camera Raw 9.0 for Photoshop/Bridge CC.

I posted the following information on the Luminous Landscape forum (GPU used in Develop but not Library?) in response to comments you made there.
I am very puzzled by the extremely blurry image in the second screen capture when the GPU is enabled.
    OS X (10.9.5)
    Hardware configuration:
       MacPro (late 2013)
       AMD FirePro D300 2048 MB
       Apple Cinema Display 1920 x 1200
       16 GB RAM
       1 TB SSD
Test file:  Nikon D800 NEF, 50 MB
    (0)  open the Develop module
    (1)  select a different NEF file and zoom to 1:1
    (2)  clear the ACR cache
    (3)  select the test file
    (4)  take 3 screenshots to illustrate the 3 display states (the first one is hard to capture)
    (5)  select another image
    (6)  same 3 states are present
    (7)  return to the test file and the same 3 display states are present
Why isn’t the ACR cache coming into play in step 7?
If I repeat this process with the GPU disabled the image is displayed without the intermediate states.
I have attached the 3 screenshots mentioned in step (4).

  • How do I get a replacement heatsink for T61

I have a T61 Thinkpad (7658CTO), for which the heatsink is gone. I need to a spare one. How do I get it in India? The toll free numbers 1800-3070-7555 1800-425-2666 dont work, if the laptop is out of warranty. They hang up if you say your laptop is out of warranty.  Strange!
I figured out the required part number which is 42W2460 or 44C0825, but there seems no way you can get that in India? Does anyone have any idea, how we can order spare parts from Lenovo in India?

The best thing about thinkpads are the vast amount of parts available on the secondary market. If you had another brand not only would there be no new parts available, but none on the secondary market either.
I'll share a story with you...
A few years ago I had a dead WinBook laptop. I was unable to get parts to fix it so out of frustration I stripped it down and listed each good usable part at auction starting at $0.01 each and a bidding war begun. I ended up getting close to $1000 for a laptop that wouldn't have been worth more then $200-300 if it had worked. If it was a thinkpad those $1000 of parts could have been purchased for about $100 or less.
You'll find that that after 5-6 years no manufacturer supports out of warranty items, but thinkpads are supported by the community.
ps. I could have gotten you a heatsink for about $15 to 25 for any T61/T61p model.

  • Best laptop for working with after effects

I need a laptop for work with adobe after effects and some others. Anyway I need laptop wich will not cost more than 1400€ and which will have inside intel core i7, 4 GB of memory or more and Nividia graphic card. Somthing more pls dont say the apple is the best beacuse i dont like it very much.
    Thanks.

4GB is a rather small amount of RAM for working with After Effects. If you can get a computer with more RAM, I recommend doing so.
For After Effects CS5, the graphics card (GPU) doesn't matter as much as RAM and CPUs, so focus on RAM and CPUs first.
In general, a laptop is not going to give you the same performance as a desktop computer of the same price. If you need a laptop, fine; but don't be surprised when performance isn't as good as you might like.

  • GPU Acceleration for Lightroom

When will Lightroom have GPU acceleration like Photoshop CS4 has?

From what I've read GPU acceleration in CS4 currently only applies to canvas zooming and rotation... not EVERYTHING is accelerated by the GPU. So what effect (if any) would GPU acceleration for have for those items in LR? (honest question... I don't know.)
I've also read Adobe is planning on more features later on in CS to use GPU. So to me this appears currently as a first stage deployment of this technology... not TOO exciting in terms of actual benefit today, but with promising prospects in the future.
As for LR, I assume it all depends on what features would benefit from this (some would actually slow down if routed through GPU, if I understand some the writeup about this.)

  • GPU Acceleration disabled even with latest drivers

I´m trying to enable GPU acceleration, but even with the latest drivers it wont enable.
Note that this is with AMDs Legacy driver for Windows 8 x64. The card is a 4870x2.
Firefox wants a higher driver number then 12.8 but in CCC it states that my driver version is 13.1.

hello, there seems to be a different technical driver naming scheme by amd for radeon HD 2/3/4000 series graphic cards (their latest driver version is 13.1 which translates to the technical version 8.97.100.7) & hd 5/6/700 cards (13.4, which translates to 12.104.0.0).
due to crashes triggered by older driver versions firefox is blocking all cards below version 9.10.8.0 for HWA - i don't think it is possible to differentiate these blocks for certain card models (since there are too many of them)...
you could try to circumvent the blocklisting like it is described at https://wiki.mozilla.org/Blocklisting/Blocked_Graphics_Drivers#How_to_force-enable_blocked_graphics_features though.

  • Macpro 3,1 GPU requirements for Photoshop CC, Video Editing 4K

    Hi -
I'm looking to upgrade my paltry 512MB graphics card in my MacPro 3,1 2008 2.8 8-core to handle Photoshop CS5, CS6, CC, as well as Final Cut/Premiere 4K editing. Most if not all GPU reviews are focused on gaming performance but I'm just interested in getting enough GPU performance for the above applications. I'm hoping to spend at most $250 for a graphics card but I'd obviously be happier to spend half as much if it's all I need. I've been focusing my attention on the GTX 650 up to the GTX 770 cards. Anyone have any helpful guidance on the matter?
    Thank you in advance!
PS I'm currently running 10.6.8, but also have a Mavericks partition, all on an SSD drive, 14GB RAM.

You are in serious need of RAM as well.
PCIe SSDs can help as well with CS6 for your scratch volume or for Lightroom and Aperture.
10.8.5 did have support for PC cards - have you talked to folks at Netkas.org and MacRumors forum for Mac Pro as well as looked at test results Barefeats.com did on GTX 7xx ? back couple years they did a lot of tests of GPUs when the EVGA GTX 680, still popular, and AMD 7950 - both are Mac Edition cards and still being sold.

I have a 2012 Macbook Pro and the GPU is causing issues with Yosemite. There are a number of issues I have run across:
If I have four tabs open on Safari then I start to get a flickering on the screen from the GPU refreshing
When I leave the computer alone for more than 20 mins the screen saver should start -- what happens is that the screen goes to black. When I move the cursor I do not get the login screen. I have to reboot

Do you have more than one OS on the Mac?
You may want to look at something like http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/. This has a Free Trial window, but it is a commercial application. If there are any heat/sensor issues, this may help.
A SMC Reset or PRAM/NVRAM reset may also help.

  • Mixing 1262 with 2600/3600

    Guys,
would there be a reason not to mix up 1262 APs with 2600/3600 APs in a new deployment? I need the flexibility that the RP-TNC antennas provide for some areas, but in other areas, I am don't need anything unusual and I would love to go with the 2600/3600 APs, unless mixing them up is a problem.

    I'm with Scott.
Single-radio APs will be phasing out (except for the 600, 700).  If you want, you can get the "E" model AP which will provide you with an RP-TNC socket.
If you're fine with diminished CleanAir, then you can get away with it.

  • W700: max GPU temperature for Quadro FX3700M?

I've recently noticed a freeze / stall problem in Direct 3D applications (mostly games) with the Nvidia Quadro FX3700M GPU of my W700 (2757) under Win XP x64 and Win 7 Pro x64. The system was running rock solid for more then 3 years, and after a lot of testing with fresh Windows installations and different Nvidia driver versions, I decided to take a closer look at GPU temperatures.
Turned out that in idle mode GPU temps are already 65 °C and climb over 96°C under full load in the GPU testing tool from MSI (MSI Kombustor). Furmark brings it even over 100 °C (I stopped it after a few seconds).
Are these temperatures normal for the FX3700M? I hear the GPU fan kicking in, but it may be necessary to apply fresh thermal compound for optimal cooling.
    I'd appreciate any advice.

I downloaded TPFanControl and it is working well on my W700ds so far.  It shows all the temperatures and allows you to control the fan speed at different temperatures.
Before I blew the air through, I downloaded the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool from Intel.  It tests the processor and loads it up pretty hard.  It gives a differential temperature from the maximum recommended temperature.  At the start of the test my processor indicated 42 degrees below max and at the end 21 degrees below max.  Not sure what max temp is but when I first turned on the TPFancontrol it indicated my gpu was running between 78C and 81C degrees.  Since blowing air back through the fans, the highest gpu temp I saw, with the TPFancontrol running in as received setup, was about 60C. I played with the .ini file for the TPFancontrol and have mine running at a fan level 4 at 57C.  that would be without heavy use.

    Hi!
My girlfriend has a AMD system that runs a Athlon XP 2400+.
Usually her idle temp is about 45C to 50C (no idea of load temp soz).
First of all do u think this is too hot?
We r thinking of getting a new Heatsink for her. I am looking at 2 heatsinks atm but not sure which is better. They are both about £20. Could I have your suggestion which is the best
    1. Coolermaster Aero 7+
(I know this is very popular but is it better than...)
    2. ThermalTake Volcano 11
I know both of these heatsinks r meant to be good but I dont know which is better.
Btw if I wanted to overclock her 2400+ then what speed would you suggest. Which multipler and what FSB
    Thanks guy
    SAspaz

my temps bounce from idle about 97f to playing games it will get up to about 117f
i havent used the  Aero 7+ so i dont know what it would be on that i went with the volcano cause it does do a good job plus i like the looks of it   i gues syou could say its all in preference too if your a modder like i am then you'd wana decide what you want to show off in the case ya know but im sure either one will do a good job so good luck with it.

  • GPU Heatsink sensor broken?

    Hi!
It seems the sensor on the GPU heatsink in my MBP 2.16 C2Duo is broken - Hardwaremonitor shows "not connected" most of the time and the fans speed up to 6000rpm.
Sometimes the sensor shows values of 50C and the fans turn to 2000rpm.
Is there a way to repair this more or less easily? I'm not protected by Applecare anymore...
    Thanx,
    Peter

Confirms it's a bad sensor. iFixit has some thermal sensors, but it's not clear if they're for the GPU. Obvoiusly, you'd need the skills to open the case and replace it, even if you can find the part. Your best bet is probably an Apple Store or AASP.
