GPU Performance with Illustrator - New Notebook Specs

I'm looking at purchasing a new notebook for Illustrator use.  The system requirements for Illustrator list only certain models of NVIDIA video adapters.  The notebooks I'm looking at have the NVidia Optimus K1100M 2GB video adapter.  I would like confirmation that the Optimus series of adapters will not provide Windows GPU performance and that I should be looking at only the adapters listed within this link:

Thanks for writing. Please don't mind if I pick apart your statements.
"For an extra $200 the 5870 is a no brainer." I agree on a pure cost basis that it's not a hard decision. But I have a very quiet environment, and I understand this card can make a lot of noise. To pay money, end up with a louder machine, and on top of that realize no significant benefit would be a minor disaster.
So, the more interesting question is: has anyone actually used the 5870 and can compare it to previous cards? A 16-bit 60 megapixel image won't require even .5GB of VRAM if fully tiled into it, for example, so I have no ability, a priori, to prove to myself that it will matter. I guess I'm really hoping for real-world data. Perhaps you speak from this experience, Matthew? (I can't tell.)
Background work and exporting are helpful, but not as critical for my primary daily use. I know the CPU is also used for demosaicing or at least some subset of the render pipeline, because I have two computers that demonstrate vastly different render-from-raw response times with the same graphics card. Indeed, it is this lag that would be the most valuable of all for me to reduce. I want to be able to flip through a large shoot and see each image at 100% as instantaneously as possible. On my 2.8 i7 that process takes about 1 second on average (when Aperture doesn't get confused and mysteriously stop rendering 100% images).

  • Performance with the new Mac Pros?

I sold my old Mac Pro (first generation) a few months ago in anticipation of the new line-up. In the meantime, I purchased a i7 iMac and 12GB of RAM. This machine is faster than my old Mac for most Aperture operations (except disk-intensive stuff that I only do occasionally).
I am ready to purchase a "real" Mac, but I'm hesitating because the improvements just don't seem that great. I have two questions:
    1. Has anyone evaluated qualitative performance with the new ATI 5870 or 5770? Long ago, Aperture seemed pretty much GPU-constrained. I'm confused about whether that's the case anymore.
    2. Has anyone evaluated any of the new Mac Pro chips for general day-to-day use? I'm interested in processing through my images as quickly as possible, so the actual latency to demosaic and render from the raw originals (Canon 1-series) is the most important metric. The second thing is having reasonable performance for multiple brushed-in effect bricks.
I'm mostly curious if anyone has any experience to point to whether it's worth it -- disregarding the other advantages like expandability and nicer (matte) displays.
    Thanks.

  • Poor Performance with my new System

    Hi All,
Great Forum.  Hopefully someone here can provide me some direction.  I just built my first AMD based system (spec's below).  Everything is running smooth and stable, but I dont believe I am getting the performance out of this rig as I should.  Specifically, I am getting very low scores on 3Dmark05 (5100 - 5300) with my rig at stock settings.
I've surfed through these forums for days and found many folks getting much better performance out of components that are not as robust as mine.  So, I am looking for some guidance.  So far, Here's what I've done:
1:  Bios:  I've disabled the "smart & cool"
all of the "aggressive timings" are disabled
Video is selected to AGP (128mg since that's what the BFG Technician recommended for the 256mg GPU's)
                 boosted video voltage to 1.6v
Manually set all of the ram timings (listed below in the system description)
Processor HT is set to 5x (i got this from the AMD site)
most of the other settings are set to auto.
2: Temps:  The CPU is currently idling around 42 degrees.  46 under load
The GPU is idling around 62 degrees.  this seems a bit high, but i havent been able to verify.
3: CPU Scores in 3DMark05 are in the mid-high 6000's
Ive also tried to load the registry oc program for the GPU (from guru) and it only made things worse.  standard clock settings (factory oc'd) work best.  The system is extremely stable and runs quite smoothly.  It's very quiet and cool (42-46 cpu, 34 ambient)
I am not sure where I went wrong here, but something is just not making sense.  I've read posts where folks are getting scores in the 10's and 11's with lesser processor and GPU gear.  Any directions here would be greatly appreciated.  Hopefully i've posted enough information. Thanks for your help!
    MB: MSI K8N Neo Platinum
    Award BIOS, v1.8
PROC: AMD Athlon 64 4800+ (42 degrees idle, 46 degrees loaded)
    MEM: 2x Corsair TwinX-3200C2-Pro (2.5, 3, 3, 6, 1T @ 2.7 volts)
GPU: BFG GeForce 6800GT OC 256MB AGP, nVidia v78.01
    PSU: UltraX-Connect 500W
HD: WD Raptor 74G 10,000 rpm
    CD: Plextor DVD-R/W
FAN/HS: XP-90 e/w SilentCat fan (yes, it fits with the memory in slots 3&4.  No problems with this with the new bios.  All is stable and runs well)
    Windows XP SP2

    Thanks for the replys guys.
I did read a few threads where folks were boasting numbers in the 10's and 11's.  From your notes, it appears that they were simply blowing smoke.  I appreciate knowing that, although I dont understand the purpose of posting inaccurate information in these forums.  These are (and will continue to be) and excellent resource unless they become clogged with garbage.
As far as temperatures on the GPU, I figured it was a bit high, but according to BFG, it's good to 120C (that seems way outta line).  i imagine that i would get a bit better performance from it by replacing the stock heatsink/fan combo with an aftermarket GPU cooler from Zalman.  The right thing to do is to replace my MB with a ASUS SLI-Premium and put a couple of 6800 Ultra's in it (lol).
I appreciate the information.  It appears that i have achieved the maximum from my PC, and as I stated before, it runs great.  Thanks again for the help guys.  If I get rich and decide to change out the guts for an SLI set up, I'll let you know.  Until then, I think i'll grab a GPU cooler and see if I can get the temps down a bit.
Is there any benifit to removing the stock Heatsink/Fan and trying some Artic Silver 5 in there?  I've heard a few folks have gotten some decent results doing that.
    Thanks again

  • Aperture 3 performance with the new MacBook Pros?

I'm loosing my mind using slow Aperture 3 with 2007 MacBook Pro 2.4GHz C2D 4gig mem.
If someone has upgraded from similar setup to a newer model, please report if the performance has gotten significantly better, because I will start saving money if it does.

I've managed to get the performance passable by turning basically everything unnecessary off and using Quick Preview most of the time. Still when editing and Quick Preview is turned off, I get the beach ball way too much and simple things like WB changes take a lot of time to refresh. The editing is everything but smooth and flowing. Stamping multiple adjustments qualify for a coffee break.
Any new experiences on Aperture 3 with MacBook Pro 2010's? I found one review on Leica forum saying upgrade from 2008 to 2010 gave a significant boost in performance and reduced a lot of beach balling.

The bandwidth is meant for 4 concurrent phone conversations so adjust up as needed. The priority is based on my own testing so take it as you may.
The most important statement is "fair-queue 256", by default you only get 16 queues. Allowing for 256 queues only uses a modest amount of memory so its a simple low impact choice for the router and allows more conversations between devices without interruption.
Upping the number of queues in your policy would be the best and most important item for your performance problem, next of couse to coercing EIGRP to load balance the T1s properly.
    Brian
P.S. Create a loopback interface for the ip unnumbered use, cause if the Fa0/0 goes down everything goes down and you can't telnet in from anywhere to look at it. Eliminate the following items from the config by using "no" in fromt of them, a bit of research will tell you why, and start you toward eliminating a few other items.

  • New Notebook Graphic Specs for Illustrator GPU Performance

I'm looking at purchasing a notebook for use with Adobe Illustrator.  Looking at the specifications, only certain NVIDIA video adapters are listed supporting the new Windows GPU Performance.  The notebooks I'm looking at have the NVidia Optimus K1100M 2GB video adapter and the NVidia Optimus 1GB adapter.  I take this to mean the Optimus series won't make the cut with GPU performance for Illustrator, correct?  Here the spec link: System requirements | Illustrator

I was curious about your experience with CS5 Master Collection, since I purchased the CS4 Master Collection more than a year ago.
I had previously bought the CS3 Master Collection and upgraded.  The original CS3 collection was reasonable to work with because there was a  Disc for each different program.  If you needed to reload a program you could figure it out.  When I upgraded to CS4 which was a decent price, I figured what I would get would be comprehensible in the sense that CS3 was.  What I received was (I believe 5 discs...I don't have them with me) labeled Content
and Applications.  It wasn't long, because of the general 64-bit confusion, that one of the programs (Acrobat Pro) became corrupted.  I wasn't sure which disc or discs to load.  There are absolutely no instructions or anywhere you can go to find them.  Adobe provides nothing for Master Collection
owners, or rather up-graders...try sending an email...good luck.  Try calling...to find out how to load a program?  By the way when I try to load one of the Content discs, I get a message that says my laptop, with all the bells and whistles, and which originally accepted the Master Collection, cannot load the software, whatever that means.  I wrote several emails to Adobe asking for help, I'll even pay for it...no answer.  I also subscribe to the Professional Photographers podcast and Adobe is frequently mentioned as having terrible customer service and having over-priced software.  I'm seriously thinking of alternatives, but everyone uses Photoshop, which you're probably better off buying by itself.  Or, you could wait for another frustrated customer to post his/her complaint to the Adobe Forums.  I don't think the Adobe administrators will let this be posted, but please, be forewarned about the terrible customer service.

  • New laptop spec suggestions for Photoshop and Illustrator

    Hi Everyone!
As I am sifting through the posts regarding laptops - I figured I'd post my own as my requirements are a little different.  I am looking to buy a new windows laptop.  I work with Photoshop and Illustrator and basic office programs like outlook, word and excel.  I have CS2 but will upgrade with the new laptop purchase - so running CS5.5 (or better) Photoshop and Illustrator is required.  I may or may not buy the whole Creative Suite as I only use these and Acrobat.  I want to spend what is required to get the job done well - not more - but I don't want to be cheap either – my laptop needs to work well & not hamper my workflow.  This will be my only computer.  Being efficient is key.  I use Adobe to do graphics for apparel: (embroideries, prints, logos, etc.) and small business (logos, print media, etc.).  I work in actual size – so a lot of what I do is on a 20 x 30 art board.  I do not work on videos – just print media and static artwork.  Suggestions on the specs I will need and/or actual laptop models would be great.  Thanks so much for your help - it is all so confusing!

  • Performance and usability problems with Illustrator imports

I am usually an enthusiast advocate for Adobe Software. As a UI/Interaction designer I regularly showcase your products as a shining example.
That's why I am somewhat frustrated about the Flash Catalyst Beta. I trust you guys to come out with SOMETHING GREAT eventually, but I have just spend an entire day with Catalyst and it was not particularly a joy. Couldn't you have released it a bit later to save me the frustration?
    Situation:
    - Medium size Adobe Illustrator CS4 import (10 screens/stages with 20-100 Illustrator objects per screen)
    - Target : 800x600 embedded UI for medical product
    - Illustrator file chosen as starting point
    Performance / reliability problems include
    - Crashing (Vista Core2Duo with 2gig of Ram)
    - Super poor performance (wait 8 seconds to hide/show a layer)
    - No show of thumbnail images anywhere
    - No matching of document size (exact 800x600 from Illustrator became 800x599)
    - Playing the file did not work
    Usability issues
    - Poor test display
    - Poor match with Illustrator file (things seem to be rendered differently!)
    - Window selecting does not work well
    - No hand tool
    - No ability to lock layers
    - Cluttered interface (Not enough space for the "stage"or what you call it)
    - No way to resize Illustrator elements from one of 9 edge/center points
    - etc. etc.
Building a wireframe version from the ground up (with Illustrator import) seemed to work fine
I played around with the MS Blend beta for a while, and while the basic concept of your product is much more clear, the execution of the MS product in the beta phase was lightyears ahead in terms of stability and usability
I'm sure you can do better!
    Koen

    Koen,
Thank you for the detailed feedback about the performance problems you have experienced and your thoughts about features you would like. Let me respond to each of your points
Performance: We are aware that Catalyst doesn't perform well with large complex files. We have made many performance improvements since the current plublic beta, so you should find Catalyst more responsive with larger projects when the next beta is posted.
Here are a few things you can do to work around the performance issues you are seeing with the current beta:
    - Consider rasterizing complex elements that don't need to scaled in Catalyst
    - In Catalst turn complex artwork into optimized graphics using the "Convert to optimized graphics" in the float HUD (heads up display panel)
We have also found that particularly on Windows that Catalyst can run out of memory with large files. This area is also being worked on so stay tuned for the next beta.
    Features:
    - Poor test display [tv] Do you mean the design display doesn't match the appearance of the published project?
    - Poor match with Illustrator file (things seem to be rendered differently!) [tv] we have fixed a lot of bugs here. Expect this to improve a lot in the next beta
    - No hand tool - [tv] coming soon :-)
    - No ability to lock layers [tv] coming soon :-)
    - Cluttered interface (Not enough space for the "stage"or what you call it) [tv] Yes, Catalyst currently cannot dock/undock panels
    - No way to resize Illustrator elements from one of 9 edge/center points [tv] This is also a known limitation. I agree it is useful
I hope the next beta comes closer to meeting your expectations. A lot of performance work and new features has been done since the last public posting, so look forward to beta II.
    - Ty

  • Does the new gpu acceleration in illustrator not support the GTX 750ti?

  • How is the graphics performance with the HD4000 GPU forced on

    How folks....
I am wondering if anyone here is running there rMBP with the HD4000 GPU forced on (using gfxCardStatus.)
I always run with the integrated GPU on my Late 2011 MBP 15 (the GPU performance is adequate for me this way with the HD3000.)
Since there are a lot more pixels to drive on the rMBP, I wonder if the scrolling, screen switching, going to mission control and back, etc. suffers when using the integrated GPU only. I wonder if anyone is willing to give this a try? This might also fix the graphics corruptions problem you guys have been seeing when coming back from sleep with the rMBP.

There are different Toshiba notebooks on the market and Toshiba releases new models in very short intervals.
