GPU temperature is above 70 C, and CPU fan is above 2400 rpm

I've had my iMac for two years now. I play a lot of games and watch a lot of HD videos. In the past week, the computer has gotten a lot hotter than usual and it stutters a lot, and I feel like the two are related.
Today while playing a game I noticed that the GPU Diode reached 70 C (using iStat Pro), which I have never seen before. Therefore, the CPU fan was at 2400 rpm.
I play a lot of games, including this same one, and I have never seen the GPU this hot before, and almost never hear the fans running so loudly and so rapidly. (I can't even recall a time when I could very clearly hear the fans running.)
Could all this be a sign to a more bigger problem?

It's all settled down by now but here were some stats I posted earlier:
HD: 53
CPU: 52
Ambient: 30
GPU Diode: 71
GPU Heatsink: 66
Mem Controller: 60
Optical Drive: 52
Power supply 2: 75
Fan speeds:
Optical drive: 1110 rpm
Hard drive: 1100 rpm
CPU fan: 1421 rpm
Which part of the iMac do I blow out the dust? Do I use compressed air (which I have) or a vacuum cleaner? Do I do it through the vent at the back/top of the iMac, or open the memory bay and do it through there (and if so, do I have to take out the memory sticks first?).

  • ODD and CPU fans running at high RPMs

    Hello!
My iMac's ODD and CPU fans are running at unusual high speeds. If I turn the computer off and on they usually run at a normal rate but start rotating at around 3700 RPM very quickly (about 1-2 minutes after the OS X has started). The CPU load is not unusually high. The HDD fan is not affected.
I have tried SMC and PRAM resets multiple times.
    27'' iMac - Mid 2010 (iMac11,3)
    Intel Core i7 2,93 GHz
    Boot-ROM-Version IM112.0057.B01

    Thanks!

For some reason the high fan RPMs had to do with having two desktops under mission control.

  • CPU Temp and CPU Fan Speed

I am having a strange problem . One time I will boot the PC and CPU temp is 43 and CPU fan speed is 1308 rpm in Core Center. I do a restart system and the CPU temp is 32 to 36 and CPU fan speed 3308. Not sure if I should trust Core Center . Bios shows CPU temp 48 and fan speed of 3328. I have been reading here that there are a bunch of threads containing some kind of problem with CPU temp or fan speed. My Bios is 1.4. If anbody can give me some ideas that would be great.

Open CoreCenter on deshtop.  Click where it says CoreCenter.  Click Cool&Quite button. Then Click apply.  This drops the fan speed back into the 1400 range and the temp will rise back to the 40s.

  • PS and CPU fan comes on merely by plugging in AC power

I am repairing a friends Athlon xp machine and have tested everything with extras.
I put a new MSI KM4M-V board in.  The pc runs xp fine, etc., etc., however, when shut down the pc, Windows shuts down, but the ps and cpu fan stays on.  Indefinitely.  I have to either flip the on/off switch on the back of the ps or pull the damn plug.
    What gives?
When I plug the thing in cold, same thing; the fans come on and then I press the start button whenever I want and the system posts and boots normally.
A motherboard Short?  I checked the switch and even pulled the connector; the fans still come on when I plug it in.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.
    J Romulus

Yes, I've let it run for hours after Windows shuts off, it simply doesn't go off.
Simply plugging it in or flipping ps switch, the same thing; ps and cpu fans come on automatically.
I've read all the APIC threads; if I were strictly having problems shutting down, maybe it be that.  But it is so strange that it does it from a cold start.
Got to be some kind of short, or else a bad board.

  • Shutting down NB and CPU fans altogether with speedfan for p2p download overnight

    Hi,
Lately I started to keep my computer on overnight for p2p downloads. Problem is, my setup is too loud, thanks to the NB fan esp. I have my computer in the same room as my bed so the smallest DB difference makes an impact on my overall sleep quality
P2P is not a cpu challenge, so right now I am trying this:
Have speedfan turn off both NB and CPU fan when CPU is below 45C.
CPU temp controls both NB and CPU fan as NB readings come from a Hawai beach.
My room is really hot, my system temp is around 40C.
It is also possible to underclock my p4 2.4 down to 1.6ghz with Clockgen.
When Speedfan turns off NBfan, the lights go off to so I am not disturbed in my sleep by the lights
    Now:
Is speedfan's cpu readings dependable?? (It certainly reads different than CoreCenter)
Is stopping the NB fan bad?? Many people even remove it, but stopping it maybe worse than throwing it away in terms of airflow?
Anyhow would my NB warmup at all if you think it handles 200mhz fsb and my FSB will be only 133, so isn't my NB underclocked already, so it wouldn't warm up as much?
Should I underclock my P4 to 1.6ghz so it would keep it and the NB cool even more?
Is this a really bad idea?

  • AMD X2 4200+ and CPU Fan

Its been a while since I've been on this forum, but I need advice on this one...  I am planning on buliding a new system with a Athlon X2 4200+ (still waiting to see if AMD will sell X2 4000+ or 3800+ ). I think I'll go for an MSI K8N Neo 4 platinum board and I was wondering if the zalman CNPS7000B Al-Cu Led fit well on this particular mobo. I was also wondering if the cooling, provided by the Zalman CPU fan, would be enough for an X2 CPU?
    Thanks for your help,
    V
P.S. Are there any problems with the nVidia integrated firewall?

For those who wish to build a AMD X2 system, gigabyte has two fans that weight 430g (respects AMD max weight specs) and that is supposed to be very efficient...  Lot of positive reviews over the web...  And it is silent too

  • ThermalTake Hardcano and CPU Fan. MoBo Compatibility

Will the Hardcano work in conjunction with MSI 865 PE CPU fan features? I see several people here have the TT case and was wondering. The CPU fan is a stock fan without a speed sensor so I'm assuming that I can use the Hardcano speed control without interferring with any elements concerning any MSI MoBo functions. Does anyone have an opiion about this? Thanks.

I have the hardcano working controlling the cabinet fans and do not have the CPU fan connected up.    Call me cautious but the stock CPU and heatsink, even when O/C'd, does not get very hot.     For me the issue is keeping the HDD's cool.

  • 1 day old Retina MBP. Battery Icon disappeared,Backlight Keyboard is INOP, and CPU fan is on full all the time. Help!?

Just got my second replacement Retina Mac Book Pro last night for another unrelated issue.  I used time machine back up to restore files. I used it last night to DJ for work. NO problems everything working as normal. This afternoon when I connected the new  computer to my studio external monitor I noticed something strange, when I plugged in the charger,  (1) the light on the charger never lit up. (2) The CPU fan came on at full blast (3)  the battery Icon was missing (4) and I noticed that my backlight keyboard mysteriously stopped working.

Take it back and have the techs test it.

  • IMac cpu fan running at full rpm

    hi all
A few days ago my cpu fan started running flat out. I have done the smc or whatever it is caled reset thing where you unplug the cored ect.
I have done the hardware test with no bad results.
I have checked activity monitor for cpu usage and there is nothing unusual there, so I can only guess that the cpu temp censor is faulty.
I should also add that this machine has been running non stop since mid 2007 , with the exception of the odd blackout and restart, thats pretty amazing i think.
maybe its time has finally come ;(
    any clues ??
    thanks

SMC is firmware and OS X is software, which has nothing to do. Furthermore, you are using a very old iMac, so SMC should not have been updated with OS X 10.10.2.
If you have tried a SMC reset and it did not work, run Apple Hardware Test (make sure you choose an extended test) to see if there is any problem with a temperature sensor or anything like this -> Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support
Note that you may need the DVDs that came with your Mac in order to run it. If you get an error at the end of the test, please copy it here.

  • CPU fan speed - is 6000 rpm at 41C normal?

I have asked about this before - haven't found a solution yet - -- just want to know how fast a bog-standard retail fan for the 3800+ should be going ...mine hit about 6200 rpm a short while ago when the CPU temp was 41 C, and sounded (as someone else describes it "like a Dyson") ... it is now at 36 C and has just dropped below 5000 rpm ... I can hear myself think now ... I have Speedfan but haven't a clue as how to get it to "control" the fan speed - 6000 rpm seems somewhat high for 41 C!!
If I would be better using a different CPU cooling solution ... what "fan" would anyone recommend? ... with a price limit of around £20 ....
    JLP

Keep in mind that each CPU will operate at different temps depending on which core you have, the Ambient temp and the case temp as well as what your using as cooling and what case fans you have. Just because one person gets a good temp does not mean you will get the same.
For instance a computer in a hot room will end up with ahigher temp than one in an airconditiooned room. A Computer with dual 120mm case fans can usually be cooler than one with 2 80mm fans and so on.
Also note that it can depend on how you use your computer as the heavier the loads the more heat will build. Bigger Vid cards in the system will produce more heat than a small and cool vid card. So it stands to reason that the componants also play a part.
Cool and Quiet will also be a factor as it is meant to keep the CPU slow and cool when there is only small loads on the system.

  • CPU fan running at 3900 rpm tried everything so far.

I have an early 2008 imac running upgraded ram, Mountain Lion 10.8. I hve a CPU fan that is running at 3900 rpms. I have downloaded the SMC fan control, I have tried doing the option, command p,r. I have done all the shut down procedures. I tried ro restart in diagnostics mode but it wont restart in diagnostics mode (I tried using option D as well as just D on start up) I downloaded and tried using a shell app command with Automator that is suposed to force the fans tor run at a particular speed ie: 1200,1500,2400 etc. but it does not work. I do not have a start upd disc for Mountain Lion. Don't know what else to do.

I have tried running the hardware test I cannot get it to run starting up while holding D or starting up while holding option D. I do not have a OS X
    install DVD 2.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
It's clear that there's a problem with your Mac, so the best you can do is to make a backup of your files and take your Mac to an Apple Store or reseller to get it repaired.
If you want to know what's failing, run Apple Hardware Test > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
In your iMac, Apple Hardware Test is included in the Mac OS X Install DVD 2, so insert it and hold the D key while your computer is starting. Disconnect all peripherals except the keyboard and mouse, choose your language, mark the box to use the extended mode and start the test. At the end of the test you will probably find an error, so copy it here

  • Operating temperatures of K7N2-Delta L and CPU

I was wondering what the temperature at which the motherboard cut power to the CPU was for a K7N2-Delta L?
Also, what are standard operating temperatures for an AMD Athalon XP 2200+?

  • I want to quiet down a P4 1.6A CPU fan and Sparkle PSU

    Hi,
I want to quiet down my P4 1.6A CPU fan and PSU fan....
    A) I have a MSI 845G-MAX-L motherboard with Winbond monitoring chip. I notice that the CPU fan RPM goes up when temperature goes up. Is this normal on all boards, or is this an extra nice feature specific to MSI boards with Winbond chip???
    B) I've already put a FanMate to the CPU fan, and it runs at 1500 RPM, but I can still hear it.... so now I have a Zalman fan bracket (FB123) and am searching for a 80MM which has RPM sensoring, to give me some feedback in the BIOS and MBM5. Any suggestions on a quiet 80MM which has RPM sensoring.... (I've tried Coolermaster and Vantec.. they are both noisy to me.... I tried Panaflo but I want the RPM sensor so I can tell if the Winbond chip is doing it's job of speeding up the fan when the CPU temp goes up....
    C) I have a Sparkle 300W-BTV PSU. Does Sparkle solder on the PSU fan tail to the pcb or do they use some pin header?? I'll probably replace the PSU fan with Panaflo. Also does Sparkle use a thermistor to control fan speed or is it just one speed? I can use the Coolermaster DAF-B82 which is quiet at startup (1000 rpm) at 20 C.
    D) I am thinking about getting the OCZ P4 eliminator passive heatsink.... anyone using it or seen a review of it? Can the Alpha 8942 run in passive mode with no CPU fan? I only have the Sparkle PSU fan as the exhaust fan in my Coolermaster ATCS-200 aluminum case.
    Thanks.....

My CPU runs at 37 C at idle and the CPU fan is at 2400 RPM.  When running loaded (at 100% utilization after 1 hour) my CPU temp runs at 41 C and the CPU fan is at 2800 RPM.   During the summer when ambient temps were very high I've seen my CPU temps at 43 C and CPU fan speed at 3000 RPM.
I read a little on the Intel Precision Cooling Technology.  I believe that the Intel Precision Cooling is capable of adjusting the SYSTEM case fans (along with the CPU fan).   It seems that Intel went one step further by adding in SYSTEM fans and then adding in the ability for the user to control both the CPU fan and SYSTEM fans based on temperature.
What I'm wondering is if all or most P4 motherboards adjust  the CPU fan speed based on CPU temp (in real time), or is this just something new that MSI did in their later boards like my 845G MAX?  Anyone have other P4 MB (other than the obvious ones by Asus and the ones which have the Intel Precision Cooling) who can comment?

  • Max Temperature of mainboard and CPU?

What's the maximum permissible working temperature (in ºC) for the mainboard and the AMD64X2 4400 CPU.
    At the moment Corecenter shows:

     CPU: 47ºC
and CPU fan is almost at maximum: 1875rpm and  NBfan: 800rpm
    Is that too much?

That NB fan speed seems a bit low... 800 rpm? Stock is 7,000rpm  This might be more Core Center inaccuracy at work.
Try monitoring it with something else other than Core Center - like SpeedFan for example, & see what it says.
For some reference, here's the temps for my Neo4 Plat. PCB 1.0 w/DC Opteron running @ 2.5Ghz & 1.45v. See my sig for the other junk... These temps reflect a room temp of 77F & a well ventilated case.
    CPU temps: 36-49C
    chipset/system: 29-32C max.
    - I've always used a Vantec Copper VGA cooler in place of the stock fan for the chipset, as I've always heard/read that the stock one is a piece of loud garbage.

  • My Early 2015 MacBook Pro fans are at 0 RPM and my cpu temperature never fluctuates

Hello all I have had a Mid 2009 macbook pro for 5 years now and just got my Early 2015 MacBook Pro.  On my old macbook i used iStat and SMC fan controller religiously and everything worked great.
Now with my new Early 2015 MacBook Pro, My CPU sensor doesn't even show up in iStat, and in my top toolbar, SMC controller shows my CPU temp never moves, and my fans are at 0 RPM. I cannot hear any fans moving at all when in a completely silent room, and my ear is to the computer.
I downloaded a game to stress the CPU to see if it'd change, and it doesn't all the way up to the fans just coming on at 6000RPM and the CPU is very high like 80-90C
I have already reset my PRAM and SMC and was wondering if anyone here has been monitoring their temps and have seen the same thing?
    Thanks

I also have an Early 2015 rMBP w/ i5-5287U cpu.  I am using Temperature Gauge from the Mac App Store and getting similar if not slightly worse results.  I'm usually Idling somewhere between 45 and 60 C with almost no activity.  When I run games, forget about it (see below), temps up to 103 Celsius.  I also experience almost no fans until at least 70 C, and then during gaming the heat is not coming down.
Given that the cpu is supposed to shut itself down at around 105 C, I'm thinking that the programs are not decoding the temperature sensors correctly.  This is my first Mac so it's hard for me to compare performance.  I expected better heat regulation.  I was trying to avoid programs outside of the mac store for this type of thing, but I'm considering OGELTHORPE's suggestion for istat menus, as they do claim to support early 2015 MacBooks.  Have you tried this program yet?
