GPU Temperature Problems: Faulty Chip or SMC?

Hello Community
I am looking for some backup? on my theories regarding my MBPs GPU overheating - or the SMC has cracked it.
Timeline:
Running Windows 7 for video games, start games, very bad performance. Reboot. Fan is at full. Leave it to cool. Try again. Same problem. Try another game. same problem. Try OS X. Same problem.
Run Tech Tool Pro 5. No faults detected. As its a graphics issue, I hammer the VRAM test. No faults found. Given the 9400M shares system memory, I ran Mmetest86 and found stacks of addressing errors. Popped the RAM out, thinking it was faulty, popped the old RAM in. Memtest finds errors and no performance increase.
On suggestion of someone else, checked temperatures. Hello super high GPU temps. I have seen sustained and constant temps of between 90 (OS X) to 105 (Windows) degrees Celsius from running animated loading screens for video games.
Using a few utilities on the Windows side (which has more available) I have found an unsurprising link between GPU usage (and thus performance) and temperature. Beyond 85 degrees or so, things start to go cactus.
I did an SMC reset, and a PRAM reset. I've had a Genius do the same. I had one Genius explain to me that GPU cooling requires hardcore nitrogen setups and that 90 degrees for a GPU is OK.
There is obviously a problem. When I force the fans to max out, the temp stays around 90 C max (and performance is still bad) but if the SMC was working correctly, it should be maxxing the fan at that temp instead of me using 3rd party tools to kick them up.
To end my rant, do people think its SMC or the GPU? Either way its a new logic board, I just wanted some input on what people think it is.

That does sound like it could be from overheating. Try blowing out the fans and vents. You can buy cans of compressed air at most electronics store. Use it to blow the vents out while the computer is off and unplugged. This can greatly reduce the temperature!

  • GPU Temperature

I have a Mac Mini from 2012 that have a high GPU Temperature, I'm using a monitoring program (Temperature Gauge) that is warning about high GPU temperature (95-97C).
The Mac mini is placed upon a tv furniture so it has a lot of air aroound it, I've used compressed air to remove dust but still gett the high GPU temperature. Is this a comon problem and what can I do about it?

While it may not be recommended by some here, I use > Lobotomo Software: MoofMenu (aka Fan Control) on my 2010 Mac Mini to keep it from cooking.
Right now I'm just surfing, listing to iTunes and it's cool in the office, so the fan is only running at default speed.
But notice what happens when I play a game or watch video. As the temp increases so does the fan speed and so it never goes much above 70 C no matter what I do.
I use smcFanControl on my iMac's and Fan Control on my Mac Mini's and have never had a fan or graphic's failure. Personally the only draw back is that one needs to clean the air intake(s) more often, but that a small price compared to having melted Mac.

  • W700: max GPU temperature for Quadro FX3700M?

I've recently noticed a freeze / stall problem in Direct 3D applications (mostly games) with the Nvidia Quadro FX3700M GPU of my W700 (2757) under Win XP x64 and Win 7 Pro x64. The system was running rock solid for more then 3 years, and after a lot of testing with fresh Windows installations and different Nvidia driver versions, I decided to take a closer look at GPU temperatures.
Turned out that in idle mode GPU temps are already 65 °C and climb over 96°C under full load in the GPU testing tool from MSI (MSI Kombustor). Furmark brings it even over 100 °C (I stopped it after a few seconds).
Are these temperatures normal for the FX3700M? I hear the GPU fan kicking in, but it may be necessary to apply fresh thermal compound for optimal cooling.
    I'd appreciate any advice.

I downloaded TPFanControl and it is working well on my W700ds so far.  It shows all the temperatures and allows you to control the fan speed at different temperatures.
Before I blew the air through, I downloaded the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool from Intel.  It tests the processor and loads it up pretty hard.  It gives a differential temperature from the maximum recommended temperature.  At the start of the test my processor indicated 42 degrees below max and at the end 21 degrees below max.  Not sure what max temp is but when I first turned on the TPFancontrol it indicated my gpu was running between 78C and 81C degrees.  Since blowing air back through the fans, the highest gpu temp I saw, with the TPFancontrol running in as received setup, was about 60C. I played with the .ini file for the TPFancontrol and have mine running at a fan level 4 at 57C.  that would be without heavy use.

  • T420 CPU/GPU Temperatures seem excessive...

I was running Prime95 to check my CPU (Core i5-2520M) temperature (using Real Temp) and I noticed it was a bit high, about 95 degrees celsius. I followed up by running FurMark to check how the NVS 4200 GPU was doing. It ended up sustaining at 87 degrees celsius. I did not run the two tests concurrently.
I decided to strip the heatsink off and apply new thermal compound. After the new compound was applied, the CPU temperature under Prime 95 peaked at 84 degrees celsius. Under Furmark, the GPU sustained at 75 degrees celsius. A very significant drop.
I decided to run the two tests concurrently (after new compound had been applied) and ended up with a CPU temperature of 100 degrees celsius and a GPU temperature of 97 degrees celsius. Pretty horrifying stuff. I can't imagine those values being within operating range.
These torture tests are rather extreme so I followed up with some gaming. I played DOTA 2 for about 3 hours and during that period my CPU peaked at 98 degrees celsius with an average temperature of 93 degrees celsius. I did not log the GPU temperature during this session.
I should mention that Turbo Boost is enabled and the fan was set at maximum speed.
Does anybody have any temperature figures for similair configurations? Specifically in situations where the GPU and CPU are both under high load. I'm curious to know if my temperatures are abnormal.

I started to think that it's not an issue with my sample. I went ahead and confirmed these temperatures on two other identically specced T420s (4178). Under extreme conditions the heatsink/fan unit cannot dissipate heat quickly enough causing both chips (CPU and GPU) to reach dangerous temperatures. If you haven't torture tested the GPU and CPU in your T420 concurrently, you might want to give it a shot. It gets alarmingly hot.
(Do this at your own risk, extreme heat can damage your hardware)

  • How to monitor GPU temperature?

    Hi dears.
Recently I changed my HD3870's fan with the Arctic Cooler Accelero S1 Rev.2 silent cooler. This is much more silent than the stock fan installed on the Video card.
So the question is: how do I monitor GPU temperature to check if all is ok? In the event of too much hot GPU can I cause problems to all the system or only to GPU?
    Thank's a lot.
    Regards.

I use this app to monitor my iMac's overall temperature: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/23049/smcfancontrol
If the computer appears over 120ºF/130ºF, you can use the slide bars to increase the fan speed. Mac computers can still pretty easily run at around 210ºF, but the cooler you keep it, the better. Personally, I keep my iMac at roughly 100º.

  • MacbookPro 13'' temperature problem

Hi everyone, I have a Macbook Pro 13'' Mid-2012 (A1278) with a Intel Core i7 2.9GHz for a year ago, but the cpu fan is a little noisy and I check temperature with a "Temperature Monitor App" and CPU Temp is 80ºC with only Chrome and Coda 2 opened.
Normally I work on 3D applications like Autodesk Maya and AutoCAD, this apps can overheat the cpu but now i can't work with these apps because the performance is very low, I cleaned up the logic board and temperature don't decrease.
¿How can I decrease CPU Temp? I bought a new CPU Fan and I don't want it damage again...
Thanks for help me and sorry for my english I speak spanish

And the magsafe connector is so hot like 100ºC but charge the battery and works fine but is hot. I have 2 chargers one 65W (original) and another 95W from another macbook and both have the same temperature problem.
100°c on the charger body is unacceptable and would be impossible to touch for more than a second. Mine have never been more than 55°c.  There is something terribly wrong here.  Look at the contacts between the charger and the MBP.  Is there any discoloration?  the pins in the charger connection are spring loaded, do they move easily?
Fan Speed is 6140 rpm and CPU temp is 75ºC, I think a change the thermal compound.
The CPU temperature is not bad nor is the fan speed.  I have doubts about that replacing the thermal paste will improve thew situation.
Open the MBP and see if there is dust an debris inside.  I f so clean it out.
Again, delete Google Chrome and see what happens. It has been known to have compatibility problems with OSX.

  • [SOLVED] Notebook temperature problem

    Hi everyone,
I use Arch Linux (i686) since 2008 on different machines. But my Acer 8935G Notebook is giving me headaches for some time now.
I bought it one year ago and Arch Linux ran nearly out of the box (ALSA drivers took some time, but that's done). In spring I noticed, that the computer is getting hotter than it did before (Idle: 70° Celsius / 158° Fahrenheit). In Windows Vista, I get idle temperatures around 40° C (104° F). And before spring, I got temps booting Linux around 50° C (122° F), which was absolutley okay and worked for me.
I didn't change system settings or configurations, and I tried some possible solutions, because I thought, maybe it's a kernel problem, but that's just a wild guess.
    What I did so far:
    - trying alternate kernels (BFS, CK, ZEN)
    - tried different cpufreq settings (dynamic cpu scaling is working -> cpufreq-info)
    - undervolting via intel-phc (no changes in temperature at all)
    - tried powertop
    none of that worked.
I have to say, that's not just a Arch Linux-related problem, other distributions give me the same problems (PCLinuxOS 2010, Linux Mint KDE 4.4).
My question so far is - has anybody experienced similar problems and found a solution for it?
Thanks in advance for the help - I'll really appreciate it.

    Thanks TigTex,
but I can safely say, the temperature problem is real. It's not just a false sensor, because of the heat, the metal-case of the laptop is generating. It really gets uncomfortable when working on that hot case (hands on the hot machine and typing - after a while you can order your hands "well done" *sigh*). Because of that, I switched to an external keyboard, but that's not really a solution. The weird thing is, that the temperature problem didn't exist at the beginning - and it doesn't exist on Windows. And it's also not a cleaning problem - I clean my machine regularly (because I hate dust, generally ).
I can also say, that the fan is working - and it's working also dynamicaly (gets louder, when the machine gets hotter).
I checked the CPU sensors on Windows with Core Temp regularly (runs automatically in system tray at boot).
    The machine ran 20 minutes (after 1h I get around 70° C / 73° C / 73° C):

  • Lenovo N200 3000 gpu temperature

    Hi there.
I have notice that my gpu temperature is over 65 C (149 F).
I have cleaned gpu fan and dust over the fan. Is this temperature normale for this time of year or I should visit the service.
    Thank  you for any answer.

Does the laptop bottom feel HOT?
    My thoughts:
Everest may be reporting wrong temp?
GPU heatsink may need new thermal interface compound?
    Use a cooling pad.
If you do not experience lockups and bluescreens, it may be fine.

  • Ipad 2 temperature problem since I have it

In January 2014 I exchanged my former ipad 2 to a new one using the out of warranty option. This new ipad 2 supposed to be a new one but it never worked because since the beginning I had this temperature problem that avoid me to use it for more than 5 minutes.
What can I do. Is this new ipad on warranty even I bought it using the OW? I paid $ 249+ tax!
    Thanks for your help!

When you use the out of warranty option your replacement iPad does have a warranty just not as long as a new one. Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support.

  • MSI 560Ti HAWK GPU Temperatures Diablo 3

    Hello,
I have a 560Ti HAWK GPU running stable at MSI factory settings with -75 core voltage from MSI Afterburner. I am running Win 7x64 with all updates to date. The video driver installed is the WHQL 310.70 from geforce.com. I have a quad core [email protected] GHZ and 4GB DDR2@800MHZ. The motherboard is an Asus Maximus II Formula. The BIOS of the GPU is 70.24.21.00.00 (P1040-0050). I recently flashed the bios with one sent to me by an admin on the site because it had the high memory issue. Flashing the BIOS only affected the memory temperature issue, the GPU temperature remained the same as before flashing.
The GPU gets very hot while playing Diablo 3. Monitoring the temperatures with GPUZ and MSI Afterburner it shows about 89 Celsius with a max of 92. The case is very well ventilated and in other games it does not get over 75. I run Diablo at 1680x1050 with everything on high, AA on, Vsync on, Max Foreground FPS 60.
To test the temperature and the sensors i ran MSI Kombustor for 45 minutes, with OpenGL 3, PostFX on, 8xMSAA, 1680x1050 fullscreen,  and the max temperature was 85 Celsius. The heat coming out of the card felt pretty much the same from when playing Diablo so I can conclude that the sensors are working as they should.
I tried performing a clean install of the drivers and also uninstalling the game. Also I changed the TIM on the GPU about a week ago, it now has Coolink Chilaramic, but the temperature in Diablo didn't improve. Even after changing the TIM the temperature remained the same for other games.
What else can I do to lower the temps in Diablo 3, is the game more GPU intensive than MSI Kombustor?
    Thanks

    Yes its possible
what PC case you use? do you have enough space inside and proper airflow?
have you tried tried MSI VGA drivers for the card?
I have an Antec P182 with 2x120mm intake and 2x120mm exhaust fan with decent cable arrangement. I tried the latest MSI drivers for my GPU, 306.97 but the temps are the same in Diablo.

  • K7N2 Temperature Problems

I'm having some small temperature problems with this board.
    Here are the temps
    CPU:        45-60 (normal-load)'c
    Case:       38-45
    Chipset:    42-47
The CPU isn't too bad, although I do see some strage fluctuations, like while writing this, its went upto 57 and then the next reading dropped to 47???
I have a laser digital thermometor which obviously can only scan temps external of the heatsinks, but it is accurate, and it does report similar temps.
My main worry here is the case temperature.
    Here is my setup
    K7N2 Delta 2
    athlon 2.5 @ 2.2Ghz
    1GB corsair (512*2)
    Nvidia 6800GT 256MB DDR3
    DVDRW
    DVDROM/CDRW
    120GB SATA HDD
500WATT PSU (which is heating up a little and could be a cause of this)
    3 case fans
    thermaltake volcano 12+
I've tried not clocking but there is little difference, room temps are at 20-25'c.
The heatsinks near the chipset seems to be getting rather hot also.
It doesn't have any stability problems. Its fine with games, no slowdowns. but its just the temps.
Can someone please compare my temps with the same board, just so I can get an idea.
    Thanks in advance

    I definitally need something black...
Otherwise it'd be a little out of place!
In all honesty I wish I could buy things from newegss. they seem to have a great range and nice system.
In the UK i'm reverted to buying from EBuyer (despite their poor customer services!), there prices are the cheapest although much dearer than the US...
    http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=3549119343&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=54146
Its way out of my price range. I have £50ish set aside for it, and I'm looking at these at the moment all from overclockers (seem to have best range, not price) :
    Sunbeam Samurai:
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Sunbeam_cases.html
    Coolermaster Centurion 5:
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Coolermaster_Cases_126.html
    Antec SLK3700BQE Black Quiet Midi
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Antec_Cases.html
If anyone from the UK can reccomend somewhere that would be sweet!
    I'm looking at:
    Dabs
    Ebuyer
    Eclipse Computers
    Redstore
    Simply Computers
    Aria.co.uk
    Please I need more!

  • An EMU temperature problem occurred

    Hello,
The error message I get is: "An EMU temperature problem occurred"
My Xserve RAID has been given me this error three times in the last month, always early in the morning. There is no temperature fluctuation in the server room as far as I can tell. The raid works fine and orange warning light comes on with no alarm. The raid admin initially reports failure, but when I click on the button it goes to green.
Is this a symptom that my controller is starting to fail? I cannot find anything on the web about this topic!

It wouldn't hurt to monitor the climate in the datacenter. We are using the weathergoose products:
    http://www.itwatchdogs.com/
These will track temperature, humidity as well as sound and light levels, and airflow. You could also add probes that will monitor house power so you could see how long the systems have been running from UPS.
You could also download the SNMP MIB to be used with a third party graphing utility, such as Cacti.
These products have helped us to keep track of the cooling and overall health of our servers.

  • 915gm-fr temperature problem

Hi! I´ve got a temperature problem, I just installed the Arctic Cooling freezer 7 cpu fan, to hopefully reduce the sound. But not!!! The fan runs at 2700rpm during cpu workload at 1% in windows, the bios is configurated to use temperature control. And the cpu temp in core center is 48 (pendle sometimes between 43- 60). I´ve tried some settings in core center but I think that program is crap.
The freezer 7 is icq cold. I want it to run in 1400rpm or less ( And I don´t think that is impossible), how can I control that? Or what is wrong?
Becouse the freezer 7 is ice cold there is no need for the fan to run at that speed. Maybe something is wrong with the PWM from the motherboard?
I think I´ve got a problem with the temperature control on the motherboard, reading wrong.
    Best regards

    I´ve got
    915gm-fr motherboard
    Intel P4 s775 3,0GHz HT
    windows xp
BIOS version 1,6 (newest) and newest core-center
the cpufan is running at 2700+ rpm doing idle. !! =( and the cpu is around 50C
must be something wrong with the cpu temperature sensor?
I´ve never seen the fan speed slower, just full speed, even with the boxed cooler too.

  • About GPU temperature

I checked my gpu temperature is around 58 C as soon as i logged on widows.
    Is that noraml ?

    no.. i bought X3100 equipped T61, i had a T61 with Nvidia before but i swapped with a friend for a intel integrated X3100 T61.
Display quality is the same, but the graphic performance when it comes to complex CAD and games are different obviously.
The T61 1440x900 14.1 inch widescreen, T61 with 14.1 inch SXGA+ standard screen, and a T61 15.4 inch with WSXGA (my friend swapped the OEM WXGA for a WSXGA, before swapping with mine Nvidia equipped T61) <-- these are the one that i currently own....
