Grab - Using Grab with Retina Display MBP and Cinema HD

I use Grab occasionally to "remember" things -- a list of files, a thread in a discussion, etc.
My new (this week!) MBP with Retina Display is connected to my Cinema Display (as my old MBP had been).
I noticed that when I "grab" a window on the Cinema Display, the image produced is grainy and pixelated -- that's not how the window appears on the Cinema Display and it's not how "grabbed" images looked before my new MBP.
HOWEVER, when I move the same window over to the Retina Display and "grab" from there, the image is in sharp focus.
Do I need to always move windows over to the Retina Display screen before "grabbing" them?

When you order a MBP you can have it delivered at any Apple retail store. When you get the e-mail that the MBP is ready to be picked up, you have options to enter in the rersponse if you or someone else will pick it up. You will have to fill in some required information that will identify that person to the store personnel.
I had my last MBP delivered to the local store, but I picked it up.

Acrobat XIPro Blurry with retina Display MBP

I have the new 15" MBP with retina display and my PDF documents, when opened in Acrobat XIPro, look extremely blurry even when the majority of the file is vector based graphics. In fact, the entire Acrobat interface is extremely blurry. The file looks crisp and clear when displayed using Apple's Display Software. Is there a fix? Is Adobe behind on an update to this problem? I've already messed around with the preferences to no avail. Thanks for your help...

The experience described above mentionning crystal clear UI but some blurry text in the PDF is consistent:
With Acrobat and Reader 11.0.1 we have improved the user interface so that it supports retina display. If the UI looks sluggish, it means you have 11 or an earlier version then please upgrade to 11.0.1. It should fix it.
However the rendering of the PDF itself is more of a long run and will be available with a future release (likely 11.0.4).
That being said I'd appreciate your help regarding the different issues you seem to experience:
Placing Reader and another Retina ready application (let's pick Preview) side by side, it doesn't jump to my eyes that the rendering is 'sluggish'. There is a significant difference indeed, but if settings are correct the pixel size in Acrobat/Reader should be the same than it is on a non-retina display which is acceptable - that's how Mac OS supports non retina applications and it works pretty well for most people.
If it looks worst than that, it's very likely that some settings for display/resolution in Mac OS have been changed to use larger fonts, then the pixel ratio (which is 2 by default for a non retina app rendering on a retina display) can be pushed to 3, 4 or even more, and it then looks really bad.
Can you share your display settings?
I have a picture of head anatomy that looks pretty sharp and renders beautifully fast, and a 28MB 3D PDF of a head anatomy that barely displays at 3 frames per second. The 3D looks very sharp on my retina display. What kind of PDF is the head anatomy you refer to? Can you share your file with me? Maybe I'm missing something and any help would be useful!
G. Miles seems to mention some performance issues? 11.0.1 runs smoothly on my two Mac laptops - one is a 4 year old Mac Book Pro, the other one is a 15' Retina. I'd be curious to know what files you are viewing, in which resolution, and anything that can be of value for us to investigate and improve your experience. Can you share a file with us?
Finally, as for the delay responding to Retina support (and I apologize for taking several weeks to answer this thread) it's a different story to perfectly render PDF including all the entities and rendering modes it supports. In order to ship Acrobat or Reader with an official support for Retina display, this includes everything PDF supports, unlike other applications mentionned above which usually support PDF 1.4 best case (the current standard is 1.7). This includes multimedia, 3D, forms, etc.

13" Haswell MacBook Pro with Retina Display overheats and speakers fail.

I have the new 13" Haswell MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Have had it for a week and a half now and ever since I got it the speakers have failed completely many times. They start to crackle then stop completely. The speakers just don't respond. I have tried turning my volume all the way up, playing a song and nothing works. I have to restart or shut down the computer before it works again. My other concern is that the computer overheats too much. I am streaming Netflix or watching a YouTube video and it gets really hot. I am afraid of setting my house on fire if I dare to download a game on the MacBook. I am really concerned about the speakers more than the overheating. Is anyone else having this problem or do I just have a bad device? I think I might return it. Please help.

I am going to buy a new ipad with retina display and wifi & cellular connectivity when I visit the US next week would there be any problems using it inthe UK especially with the cellular networking. Can you buy them unlocked and network free like in the UK?

Large library workflow with Retina Display MBP?

I presently use a Mac Pro with 4TB SATA drives, but my old MBP just died and I need to replace it.
The problem with new Macbooks is the very limited storage space. In my old MBP, I had two 1 TB drives (one in main bay, other in the optical drive bay via the OWC adapter).
Unfortunately, the new Retina Display Macs have insufficient storage options. I need lots of drive space when I travel (had 2TB, and that was on a 5 y/o MPB), and I really loathe having to cart around sloppy external drives which need auxiliary power, etc.
I know OWC makes this product which allows for a bit of extra storage (use the 768 GB drive as storage and a new 480 GB internal for the boot drive). But this solution is sloppier (external plugins) than the simple old setup with two internal drives.
I've also never really had a great system for syncing libraries between the MBP and the MP tower, it was always cumbersome.
So, are there any other pro photogs out there who have a good system for location shoots and syncing with large libraries?
I'm contemplating getting rid of the Mac Pro tower all together, but making a MBP work well seems problematic.
Also, FWIW, I shoot HDR, architecture mainly, and can fill a 64GB card in a day or two of shooting with my Nikon D800. That's why I need a lot of laptpp storage; When I travel, I may be gone for a month, and can easily shoot 500GB+ of content. If I use a new MBP as my only computer (and sell the MP), then I need a lot of drive space for email and other docs. Currently, but home folder has about 1.3 TB in it, and that's without any photo libraries (I have itunes and some video in there).
Any insight or ideas appreciated...

I can not advise you on iPhoto since I have not used it for about 4 years. All my pictures are linked to Aperture in some way.
With respect to Aperture and Aperture Libraries I have several configurations on my iMac, depending on the life cycle
A bit about structure
For each year, I generate a nested folder structure that looks like this:
2013 Pictures
    January 2013
    February 2013
    thru to December 2013
    Misc Pictures 2013
    Misc Libraries 2013
    photo.net to hold pictures upload to this site
    facebook to hold pictures upload to this site
   and etc
Inside each monthly folder there will project date folders that have this general structure (YYMMDD) so inside the January 2013 folder one might the following
   January 2013
       130106
           130106 NEF (the folder that holds my RAW files)
           130106 JPEG (things that I upload or transmit to clients)
       130110
          130110 NEF (the folder that holds my RAW files)
          130110 JPEG (things that I upload or transmit to clients)
and etc. For any images related to the project, I usually store in their respective folder.
In fact I have 2011, 2012 and 2013 pictures on a single 6 TB Thunderbolt drive. The 2011, 2012, and 2013 Aperture libraries reside on my internal iMac drive. This libraries are referenced and point to the 6 TB Thunderbolt drive. This drive is getting full so when 2013 is over, I will move all of the Aperture Libraries over to the Thunderbolt drive. Those libaries already know where the pictures are so typically I don't have to do much more than drag and drop the libaries to the Thunderbolt drive.
I will pick up a 3 8TB Thunderbolt drives and start building a new collection starting with 2014 pictures. I will likely last through 2016 or 2017. These new Aperture libraries will reside on my internal iMac drive since I have moved older libraries to the external drive.
Earlier this year, I consolidated my pictures from 2001-2010 on to a single 8 TB Thunderbolt drive (called 2001-2010 Pictures). They were spread out over 5 or 6 different disks. I still have those disk just in case, but I only had to do the following:
I dragged and dropped each years picture folder to the 2001-2010 Picture drive. So 2001 Pictures, 2002 Pictures, 2003 Pictures and etc. Then I dragged and dropped each yearly Aperture Llibrary over to the 2001-2010 Picture drive: 2001 Aperture Library, 2002 Aperture Library and etc. At this point, the Aperture Libraries do NOT know where the pictures are located since I have moved the pictures from their original drive to a new drive. BUT, open a particular years Aperture Library, go to File: Locate Referenced Files and point the library to one correct picture (I may have 30-40,000 pictures in a particular year) in the appropriate Pictures folder and select connect all. Aperture will do all the work to reconnect all of the referenced images back to their master pictures.
One last step: Verify that all of your pictures are reconnected. Go to the search icon in the Aperture Library and 'Add Rule:File Status' and make sure all of pictures are reconnected to the library. Occasionally, I will find a picture that is not connected but will a little bit of work, I can find the original and move it into the library so they can be connected again.
AND BACKUP AND ARCHIVE AS YOU GO!
So when I want to find a picture from the time frame 2001-2010, I mount the 2001-2010 Picture drive, open the relevant Aperture library and I have my picture of interest. This works pretty well, if you keyword your pictures as you go along.
Lastly, I have not had any difficulty running Aperture Libraries (either referenced or managed) on external drives (USB 2.0, USB 3.0, FW or Thunderbolt). In fact, nearly all of my editing is on USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 passport drive, before I bring them into the master yearly library.
As I said at the beginning, I don't have recent experience with iPhoto, but I would assume similar strategies would work. But I suspect that using both iPhoto and Aperture makes your work flow more complicated than it needs to be. What functionality does iPhoto give you that can not be found in Aperture?

Apples dont come with say, a big manual like old things used to. Basically its a just a quick reference guide, everything on specifics is online

You should have no problem using the external optical drive. As for the external HD, you'll need to format it properly, depending on whether you want to use it with a Windows machine as well as your MacBook Pro.

Unable to purchase HD movies on iTunes to watch on my Macbook Pro with Retina Display?

I tried to purchase HD movies on itunes but was presented with an error message saying 'This cannot be played in HD on this computer. If you buy the HD version, you will have to transfer it to an HD-compatible device in order to watch it. Or, you can buy the SD version and watch it on this computer.' but this was obviously not right because i'm using a Macbook Pro with Retina Display 15" and it's resolution of 2880x1800 far exceeds the minimum screen resolution required for HD playback. Performance was not the cause either as this is an 2.6ghz quad core computer with 16GB of RAM. Any help on this matter? Thanks in advance.

I talked to Apple Support and we at least stopped the bleeding, a little bit. These are the troubleshooting steps I did before I contacted Apple Support:
1. Reinstalled OSX
2. Restore the last known good Time Machine Backup.
This did not fix my issue, so I called Apple Support and they told me this:
1. Turn Power off.
2. Wait 15 seconds.
3. Plug in Magsafe adapter.
4. Wait 15 seconds.
5. Hold down the Shift+Option+Power Button for 20-30 seconds.
6. Turn Power back on.
Ok, this stopped the bleeding a little, but as soon as I plugged in a Apple USB Superdrive
and a Apple Mini Displayport to VGA Adapter. This "USB Devices Disabled" pop-up pops up like every 30 minutes now. At least, it is not constantly popping up after I close it, so I guess it will do for the temporary. Going to contact Apple support, later, though to see what else can be done.

Macbook Pro with Retina display overheating

I just bought a 13.3" Macbook pro with retina display yesterday and it's been overheating like crazy. Right now I have only Chrome open with this page and it's uncomfortable to put this computer on my lap right now. I watched youtube videos last night and I could hear the fan, when normally this machine is extremely quiet. I'm afraid that because this computer runs so hot, it's going to damage the display. Is there something defective with this machine, or are all the ones in this model the same? Should I get the regular 2012 model instead?

I bought my Macboook Pro with Retina Display laptop during Christmas, only use it about < 10 times because I have other MACs that I've gotten used to.

A month ago, after not using it for several weeks, I picked up the laptop to move around. Wow - the box was hot like it just came out from the oven Literally - this macbook pro was not used at all - just laying idling, no programs used and was sitting in a dark corner in a room, not exposed to sun or any heat or warm area. I wasn't motivated in using it since. So, it was left laying around the house again.
Today, my son tried to use the laptop - when he touched it, he jumped 'ouch' as the laptop was hot for no reason. Again, not exposed to any warm elements or anything that is running that could have caused it to be hot.
I should have read all reviews on here - I now resented not returning this macbook pro notebook. I don't have time to go back and forth to the Genius and sitting at the bar waiting and wasting my time for something that I just paid and expect it work properly and not wasting my time. Please do something to help regain my confidence in Mac products. Not happy here! I guess I'll have to sit at the genius bar anyway. But just want to chime in that I have the same Macbook Pro overheating problem.

I was wondering if the MacBook Pro's (with Retina Display) RAM and/or Flash storage can be upgraded by an Apple employee in-store at the time of purchase?

the Retina Display MBP is currently non-upgradable. the SSD eventually may be upgradable, it is on a daughter card with a proprietary connector. the RAM is soldered on the motherboard. the battery is superglued to the case. get the regular upgraded MBP if you want to be able to easily upgrade.

IPad mini with retina display flickering screen

I just received my brand new iPad mini with retina display yesterday and today the screen started flickering and would not stop. I've powered it off and did a hard reset..the flickering will not go away. I even completely erased everything off the iPad and reset it using the settings menu. The flickering is still showing on the opening hello screen. Any ideas why this is happening?

I'm having a similar problem as "nickyizdal" and went through the same scenario, as far as erasing everything. Unfortunately, I have gotten this ipad mini a few months now...not sure if updating it to IOS 8.1.3 had anything to do with it, but this issue happened a few days after that update.

I purchased the extended protection plan for my MacBook Pro with Retina Display 15" and my question is what exactly does it cover in what kind of situations (i.e. viruses, damaged ports, damaged charger, etc.)? I want to be able to take full advantage of the protection plan since it was a pretty big whole in my wallet.

AppleCare covers all the problems you have with your MacBook Pro with Retina display and the peripherals which came with it (your charger) if you have a hardware problem that you didn't cause. For example, after 2 or 3 years and 1000 charges, OS X says that your battery has to be replaced: in this case, you have to pay for the battery, because batteries have got a lifetime, and Unibody Macs batteries have got an average lifetime of about 1000 charges.
However, if the RAM gets damaged and you haven't done anything to cause it, you will get your computer repaired or replaced for free. AppleCare in a MacBook Pro with Retina display is very important, because near all the parts are soldered into the logic board and repairs are expensive
