Gracenote Must Die

Has anyone figured out how to actually block iTunes from contacting Gracenote?
The AppleScript from DougsScripts doesn't work for me (and another poster), and Little Snitch blocks the outgoing request -- and then the CD doesn't load into iTunes either.
Not sure if that's Little Snitch's fault or Apple being even eviler.
My external firewall will block the Gracenote Web site in my browser -- but mysteriously still lets the http/port 80 request from iTunes go through.
If this were Microsoft sending data from our computers with absolutely no way to turn it off, people would be screaming about spyware lawsuits.
My guess is this is metaphysically due to the switch to Intel... "Evil Inside"... the dark spirit is doing its work now at Apple as well.

Excellent! Thanks for clearing that up for me.
Now as soon as there's a functional version of iTunes 7... : )
Looks like Apple got the hint with the outcry over the Ministore -- even if the Public was too dumb to also notice the same thing was going on with Gracenote.

  • How can I remove something from my iTunes download list permanently?

Same as title: how can I remove something from my download list FOREVA! Why would I want to do this? Because it's a piece of poo free sampler from Best Buy that is effing huge, and terrible and I don't want it, ever (it's been stuck to my list since 08, and it must die). Every time I buy something I have to remember to go and remove that from my list, otherwise iTunes gets caught up downloading that thing, which is many times larger than any video/cd/app that I have ever downloaded on iTunes before. It wouldn't be as much an issue if I had a good ISP but I don't, so any non-apple employee people giving some smarmy "get better internets" advice need not apply.

Once an item enters the download queue, the user cannot remove it. Either let it complete the download (easiest) or contact the iTunes Store customer support department through the Contact page and ask them if they'll remove the item(s) from your queue for you.

  • HP Laserjet 1100 in Windows 8 64b

    Hi,
yesterday I bought a new PC. The OS is windows 8 Pro 64bit. I've only made sure this PC has LPT port and checked this page https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/compatibility/CompatCenter/ProductDetailsViewer?Type=Hardwar...
As you can see MS says this printer is compatible so I was convinced and bought this PC. When I plugged my printer and tested  printing it worked fine but scanner does not seem to work. I found out that there's utility in windows (fax and scanner) so I've tried that but it says that no scanner is connected. What am I supposed to do? I need to use it and I can't go back to windows xp.
    Thanks for help

    Hi,
Firstly I'd like to clarify: I'm not working for any hardware or software vendor. Your printer had been working perfectly for few years or even decades and now it won't do anything or only few things because of a new Operating system. Microsoft, Apple will never say "Warning: Using this new product, your existing hardware may NOT work at all". They only say their new products will blah blah ....They promise everything then put all the unhappiness, blames to hardware vendors. I believe developing new products is much cheaper than supporting older products and each product must have a life cycle, it must die loudly or quietly and the Operating systems will kill our hardware quicker. Many people just upgrade for a sake of the "bleeding edge", never know and/or research what the existing investments at home will work or not.
Just my 2 cents and good luck.

  • Game performance low on new iMac 24"

Hello, I just got my new 24" iMac with intel Core 2 Duo extreme at 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM and Radeon HD2600 pro 256MB. It self and system(Leopard) are both brand new. I haven't install any app but only World of Warcraft for Mac version yet.
But I find that my imac cannot do well on good video quality. The FPS ingame is only around 30 at low quality, and low as 3-6 at high quality. This cannot be if considering the hardwire my mac equipped.
How can I solve this issue? I have tried a few 3rd-party radeon video drivers but they didn't work.

I have experience with many systems being a tech support guy... but the reason your not seeing better performance is that the X1900 is actually a better card than the 2600. Don't let the higher numbers fool you. The 2600 is a low end card of the 2000 series whereas the 1900 is a high end card of the 1000 series.
A good chart for seeing how different cards stack up:
    http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html?modelx=33&model1=1066&model2=72 9&chart=286
The 1900 has a faster core clock(graphics processor speed) and memory clock (memory speed) compared to a 2600. Plus the 2600 has a pretty bad reputation as a weak card. Any ATI 2000 series card pretty much below a 2900 was a disappointment. Anyways, the best thing for you to do is turn resolution down, antialiasing/sampling down (off preferably for better performance) and tune the other settings to see which affect you the most so you can turn on as much eye candy as possible.

  • How to reformat '06 Macbook Pro - cannot reach desktop

I have a 2006 Macbook Pro. I try and boot it but I cannot reach the desktop. My plan is to try and reformat it with 10.6.7 Snow Lep or 10.7 Lion (does Lion work with '06 Macbook Pro's, how about Mountain Lion?)
But here is the issue. I cannot access the desktop and the DVD Drive is non-functioning. The obvious solution is to do a bootable USB drive (I have another newer Macbook Pro to do the setup) BUT... since I cannot access the desktop, how do I actually do the reformatting with the bootable USB?

Sorry, I'm a PC guy (don't kill me)
Oh, I didn't realize you weren't part of the club. I'm afraid I've said too much... now you must die!
Okay, on a more serious note, Lion may work okay, but memory requirements in Lion are significantly higher than in Snow Leopard, and that machine only has 2 GB of RAM (assuming it hasn't had more added). I wasn't able to run Lion well on a 2010 machine with 4 GB of RAM (it ran great after upgrading the RAM), after upgrading from Snow Leopard... but I may have been doing more memory-demanding tasks than your brother, so that may not be relevant. You could certainly try Lion and see what happens.

  • I upgraded some albums to iTunes Plus - songs duplicated/overwritten

I upgraded a couple albums to iTunes Plus quality, specifically Elton John's "Live in Australia" and his debut album "Elton John". Both contain the tracks "Your Song" and "The King Must Die". When I downloaded the iTunes Plus version of the album "Live in Australia", the live version of the track "Your Song" replaced the studio version on "Elton John", and the live version of "The King Must Die" was downloaded into the "Elton John" album instead of the studio version of the same name. How is this possible? Though they share the same track name, they're from different albums.

Thanks. I should have thought of that. The "overwritten" tracks were in fact still in the trash. Crisis diverted, as I like to say.

I can't beleive there is not an path forward for users who have purchased HP products which need to be installed on newer versions of operating systems. Am I to just write-off my investment? I could use all the help you can provide me so I don't have to trash my perfectly good scanner.

  • Custom ThreadPoolExecutor

    Hello,
Suppose you need a thread pool with the following behavior:
maxThreads = Max number of threads can be in the pool.
If a thread have been idle for more than X seconds, then the thread must die.
    When a task is submitted:
    if (there is an idle thread in the pool) {
use the idle thread to execute the task.
    } else {
        if (current number of threads < MaxThreads) {
create a new thread and use it to execute the task.
        } else {
put the task in a queue.
the task will be executed when a thread becomes available.
}How can configure a ThreadPoolExecutor to achieve this?
    If you use this:
new ThreadPoolExecutor(maxThreads, maxThreads, X, TimeUnit.SECONDS, new LinkedBlockingQueue<Runnable>())All the threads are in the core, so when you submit a task, a new thread will be created even if there are idle threads in the pool.
Besides, the core threads don't die by timeout.
    If you use this:
new ThreadPoolExecutor(0, maxThreads, X, TimeUnit.SECONDS, new LinkedBlockingQueue<Runnable>())The executor prefer to queue the tasks even if there are idle threads or more threads can be created.
    Thanx

  • CS4 Crashing Problems - Questions

Just curious in regards to all of these "CS4 Crashing" problems.
    1) Before updating to Snow leopard, did you people do due diligence by at the very least checking the S.M.A.R.T. status of your drives and do a Permission Repair first BEFORE updating?
    2) Did you make a clone of your working perfectly Leopard disk, or at least do a current (minutes before) Time machine backup?
    3) Did you check first which 3rd party extensions such as those by Unsanity (FontCard), YouControl(Font), Growl, etc. that will NOT play nice with Snow Leopard yet until they are updated (if ever?)... and pre-update delete them?
    4) Did you check to make sure that all of your fonts have been disabled and those that are NOT specifically from Apple, are removed from the User Font folders... and NOT set to load at startup?
Now after all of that... did ya still "freely" and without a gun to your head, update to Snow Leopard... a brand spankin' new (dot.zero) OS release and expect absolutely NO bugs: small, large or just inconvenient for the time being?
And now your whining here?... and complaining to Apple?
Have any of you considered reverting to your clone of Leo 10.5.8 until certain issues (yours) have been fail-safely fixed?
For the record, I did a straight-up SL update on a 2.16 CoreDuo MBP, and a 2008 8-core MacPro with NO problems! Everything working fine in 32-bit and 64-bit (MacPro), including even FreeHand under Rosetta.
NOTE: check your fonts!!! Whenever something crashes here or at any of my clients unexpectedly, font and/or font cache corruption has been the main culprit, now for over 20 years(!)

  • Genius crashes on opening

MY genius never seem to load without crashing. I am on a recently bought macbook pro and did a migration of my old itunes library
    Any ideas?

I had this exact problem. It started off with itunes crashing on startup, after a while I deduced that it was due to Genius. I know this because I deleted the genius.itdb file and created a new one effectively reseting Genius and allowing iTunes to start up with Genius in the default "switched off" position.
For me, it happens when I switch Genius on and iTunes is sending the info about library to the server and I noticed it all started affter I added "Invaders Must Die" by The Prodigy to my library. Now I know that sounds a bit crazy, but to my complete dismay whilst reading on here yesterday I found another guy who had the same problem and had many phone calls with apple. Apple had told him that there was no problem with Genius, it was actually a code problem with the tracks (which he downloaded from iTunes!!!) one of which was an "Invaders Must Die" track. He had tracks by other artists which also had the same problem - Lily Allen's new song I think was one.
What is even weirder is that when I originally added "Omen" from the "Invaders Must Die" album before I bought the CD, it was a recording from the radio that I made in quicktime!!??? Now I can't see how that can effect genius in any way, I would have thought genius just wouldn't recognize it as the only info that the recording can have in common with official "Omen" download is the audio profile (and that would be slightly different due to it being an analogue recording and having radio chatter at the beginning). Anyway THAT is what messed up my iTunes. When I imported the official CD a few days after and deleted the radio recording the problem was still present. Very strange.
I have no clue to what is going on, all I know is that a great new feature of iTunes is now unavailable to me in iTunes, my iPod Touch and iPhone and I wish apple would B*dy well sort these problems out BEFORE releasing iTunes updates!!!
We need a bug fix to this infuriating problem!!!

  • Just-In-Time Advice: Details on the design decisions that lead to today's behavior

This is the update about Just-In-Time Advice design that I promised last week in an
    earlier post.
The feedback received from this forum will be helpful in modifying the
Just-In-Time Advice dialogs (JIT dialogs) in future LV versions. JIT
first appeared in LV7.0, and I waited until now to really poll for
feedback so that I could hear how it actually affected users... I
guessed that if I polled when LV7.0 first came out I'd get the "MS
Clippy must die!" response. :-) Given the feedback, I suspect there
will be changes to JIT's behavior in the future, though don't expect it
in the next release. We generally keep two or three versions of LV in
the pipeline, and feature sets for the next immediate release would
    have been determined long ago.
JIT dialogs grew out of a consistent problem we face when we change the
behavior of any aspect of LabVIEW from one version to the next: how do
we let the experienced users know about the change? There were two
comments that appeared repeatedly in the feedback:
include information in the Upgrade Notes
I can only take in so much information at one time
These two conflict with each other. I am fairly certain that everything
for which a JIT dialog exists is mentioned in the Upgrade Notes, along
with a host of other changes. Someone pointed out that the Notes were
21 pages long in a recent release. Our tech writers do an amazing job
cleaning up the sometimes cryptic notes from developers: "I changed XYZ
to PDQ. You might want to mention that in the UN." Asking them to make
the Notes a thrilling read that will be memorable from first page to
last is a bit much. (Though, tech writers, if you're reading this, I'm
not adverse to seeing an attempt!)
So, like several other programs in the world, LV decided to look to a
system whereby information can be supplied when it is needed. There's a
lot of bad perception around features like this, so we walked
    cautiously.
Here are the basic feature requirements:
    We are targeting
upgrade customers, not new users. Everything in LV is new to a new
user, and they are the group most likely to actually read documentation
about a feature. Upgrade customers generally assume nothing has changed
until they get burned. We want to call their attention to the change
    before that point.
We want something that takes up very little screen real estate
    We
want something that is easy to get out of the way while the person is
working -- Clippy had all these annoying "I'm going away now"
    animations.
We wanted to be able to be able to update the user whereever in the LV editor they happened to be working.
It must be easy to turn off.
Continued in reply...Message Edited by Aristos Queue on 08-26-2005 07:39 PM

A large part of JIT was trying to draw the compromise between insisting, "Hey, you've never seen this, pay attention" and staying out of the way. The comparison to "backseat driver" made in one post was very accurate. I've posted all this information to try and give insight into what we were up against when designing JIT. I figure it will help if we get feedback that understands the problem we were trying to solve. And, if nothing else, it lets you know that the programmers in R&D who make your software really aren't secret MS Clippy fans.
To close, I'm going to give a brief description of each of the JIT dialogs found in LV7.0. In each case, we felt that the change in LabVIEW was important enough that a customer proceeding down the old track would appreciate knowing about the new one. Generally, our reasons were in one of two categories: either the user was about to create a bug for themselves by using the old or because we felt the new way was a significant improvement of productivity/usability.
First Launch -- Immediate direction to the What's New help page and information about the Tools>>Options settings.
AutoTool -- We disabled the TAB key and made AutoTool, first introduced in LV6.1, the default behavior. If you wish to argue about the wisdom of this change, that's for a different thread. But the fact that the change was made seemed like something we should tell users.
Timestamp data type -- When you told a Numeric to format for date/time, as you would have done in LV6.1, we wanted to point out that LV actually had a new datatype, with its own control/indicator, that could save you a lot of headaches and improve precision.
Custom Probes -- When users first create a probe, we wanted to let them know that they had more debugging power in the new version by using custom probes.
Flat Sequence -- When you drop a stacked sequence structure, we popup to tell about the flat sequence structure. This was an oft requested feature, and it does make diagrams easier to read.
Custom Error Codes -- One of the uses of the General Error Handler is to define your own error codes. So when you drop it, we popup to mention that the error handling of LV has significantly improved to let you define errors that are portable with your application and across your company, instead of tied into a particular VI.
Clean Up Wire -- A new feature of LV7.0. Not everyone likes the "route my wires while I'm working" feature, but selective use of "clean up wire" can be very powerful in helping to quickly turn a mess of a diagram into readable code. We pop this up when the user moves wire segments around by hand.
Automatic Error Handling -- This popup tells you what just happened the first time that an error dialog appears while you're running your VI, even though you didn't drop an error handling subVI into your diagram. This feature did well enough in beta testing that we decided it should be enabled by default. The JIT popup helps clarify what this is.
Poly VI Selector -- What is that ring control that just appeared under my Poly VI on the diagram? The JIT tells you.
Front Panel Open -- I mentioned this one in the earlier thread. The old "FP.Open" property was unacceptable for a lot of use cases. It lead to ambiguous situations and buggy code. The new Open FP method and Close FP method and the FP.State property (which is an enum, not a boolean) are more up to the task of correctly controlling your VI front panels.
DAQmx Code Gen Help -- Gives some information about the code that the new DAQmx generates for you.
Thank you, everyone, for the feedback. We keep LV improving version over version. The JIT was an idea to solve a problem. With the feedback, we have enough information to evaluate that solution and either refine it or try something else.
    Footnotes:
    1) The state panel is that set of buttons where you find the run arrow and execution hilite button.
    2) Some of you will be happy to know that the "New & Changed in version X" page of Tools>>Options is an idea we've decided to continue in the future. It's been very popuplar. Also, it doesn't appear to be common knowledge that you can carry your config file with you when you upgrade. On Windows and Linux, just copy your the config file from your 6.1 install into your LV7.0 directory. Or 7.1. Or 8.0... :-)

  • [unsolved] acpid + dbus for hotkeys?

I read recently that gnome-power-manager supports hotkeys using a dbus plugin. Is it possible to use acpid with this plugin, so that I don't have to spend time finding out the codes for my hotkeys? Or does acpid have no way of using dbus?

No, this doesn't work. I've got hal running and hal-info installed, and my laptop's keyboard is fully supported; according to dmesg there are no problems. But acpid refuses to acknowledge when I hit the suspend key, even though handler.sh contains the right stuff.
How do I make acpid recognize when I hit the key combination? Is the daemon simply unable to make use of hal, or am I doing something wrong? I'd really prefer not to have to use keytouch or something to get my extra keys working.
(And if acpid cannot use hal - are there alternatives? Can I configure hal to directly invoke pm-suspend when the right keys are pressed?)
Edit: N/M, it looks like acpid must die. I'm going to start a new topic on configuring HAL.

  • What is ur opinion about 5610

Guys, I don't know about 5610 that is in your country, but in Russia Nokia Support (Care) says that bugs such as reboots and cracking sound while mp3/aac are not firmware dependable (!!!) and that means that the bugs are hardware dependable and do you believe that NOKIA will change chips (hardware) of 5610 ever? I think that never. Because it will be easier for NOKIA to bury 5310/5610 (the bugs are the same in XpressMusic 5*10) and to launch new mobile phones as new model line. Marketologists must die...

  • Is Skype for linux becoming Abandonware ?

As the facts shows for the last few years the Linux distribution from Skype is being highly ignored by MS.
There is a lack of functionalities, design and updates if compared to the others versions.
What is the alternatives as even the tries to make a opensource skype were blocked by MS ?

I for one am glad it's mostly ignored, less time for them to mess up the design (I hate having a chat program that fits only like 6 lines of text on a fullHD screen), the contact list (I hate only seeing one contact group at a time), features (with the advent of the photo sending feature the file transfers have become a second rate citizen and surprisingly often don't work fast anymore).
As for MS and open source, under Satya's regime they have changed a lot.  They have open sourced .NET, for one.  It is not the Ballmer-era “open source is evil and must die” kind of Microsoft anymore.

  • Choosing mirror: HTTP or FTP?

    Hi,
I just saw some statistics showing about 83% of arch users use HTTP mirrors and 17% go with FTP. I was wondering, is there any actual difference from the user's point of view, or is it just a technical choice made by the mirror site? Not asking for information on the protocols themselves, just interested if one may have an advantage over the other.
    Thanks!

IMHO, using HTTP is better. It's usually easier to get it through firewalls, as well as having the ability to issue more useful responses than FTP (eg, 304 Not Modified or 3xx Redirects)
Oh, and of course, FTP Must Die anyway.
