Gradient Feather / Transparency CS5

Dear Guys,
I have a great client I have made something for him in the past it looks like this:
As you see i have used gradient feather.
Now the client turned back to me after a while and I am trying to do the same effect on his bussines cards but I can't get it and Indesign gives me a pink/white gradient automaticly it doesnt go transparent.
Please could anyone help me out with this problem?
Anyone familair with this problem?
Kind Regards,
OG

This is so WEIRD!
In this document I changed the next thing:
Transparency Blend Space > Document CMYK to Document RGB now it does show the transparency but in the old file where it was all good its on CMYK.
Next thing if I want to print this do i get the transparency cause i'm affraid something will go wrong.. anyone.. did I do something good or isn't this the solution?

  • Gradient Feather not appearing when printing from CS5

I've created a document in InDesign CS5 and placed a box with a gradient feather over an illustrator image (vector). For some reason, the box isn't printing with the feather, but rather as a solid image. I've experimented with importing the illustrator image and box into Photoshop and saving as a tif file, then reimporting into InDesign. The gradient then prints fine, but now there is a moire pattern. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Try applying the gradient feather to the frame that contains the graphic (don't make a separate frame).

  • Gradient to transparent

I just want a simple black to transparent gradient over an image.  When I use the "paper" swatch for one color (as the Adobe directions say), it just shows up as white.  I can make them just fine in both Photoshop and Illustrator, but can't make it work in InDesign.  Nor will the gradients paste properly from the other programs.
Other settings don't create the right effect either--blending effects and the like just make a muddy gray over the image.
    Please help, thanks!
    I'm using InDesign CS5.

In InDesign it's a different process as noted below.
Create your box as a solid color - in your case black
With the box selected, go to the effects panel and from the 'fx' dropdown choose "Gradient Feather".
Play with it until your hearts content.

  • Drop Cap Button + Gradient Feather Tool like indd

A drop cap button similar to the indesign in the paragraph menu. Usually I delete the first letter and use a text wrap around an individual character - this is messy as it doesn't follow the rules of the baseline if I start moving things around, and if I change my mind I need to remember to retype the first character again.
Also I wish there was a gradient feather tool in illustrator to bypass making transparent gradient masks in the appearance panel - half the time I copy the image into indesign - apply the feather - and paste it back into
illustrator in less time it would take to create the same effect in illustrator.
    Thanks for listening,
    Caitlin

Contact Sheet is a welcome return. So many features can be adapted. I made this a few years ago by sizing up 40 images, and turning off titles, and ‘Flatten Layers’ when making the contact sheet. It was then fairly simple to FT each layer to give some overlap, and use Layer masks for creative affect.
It was eventually incorperated into a poster for the organisation running the event.
Some interesting JDIs  (thanks so much for the typed list!).
The Eye dropper changes appeal to me, and Ctrl J now working on Groups is very welcome.  Lots more there, but what worries me is that there are apparently twice as many new JDIs in CS6 as there were in CS5, which makes me think I must be missing a lot of the CS5 JDIs.  is there a list somewhere?

  • Problems with gradient feather when saving as pdf

I have an InDesign CS4 file which has a high-quality grayscale jpg with a CMYK jpg on top of it. The later has a gradient feather effect applied to it. When I export to pdf, some people (I believe with an older version of Reader or Preview) cannot view the gradient. From a computer like this, it prints the most transparent part of the gradient as the entire gradient, so I think it's still there but very hard to see.
I haven't been able to test it in Reader because I can't find an older version, but I know it doesn't work in an older version of Preview (3.0.9 is what I tried). However, everything I've tried hasn't worked—I've tried changing the Transparency Blend Space to RGB, Exporting as Acrobat 4.0 (which works but looks horrible); I've exported as Press Quality and High Quality Print, and played with profile settings. I've also made sure that all my graphics and profiles match as CMYK, because originally they didn't. The only thing that works is if I open it in my version of Mac Preview (5.0.2) and then Save As a pdf from it. But I'm afraid the colors and perhaps quality are affected in so doing. I've also googled this to no avail.
Has anyone else had this problem? Can someone help?
This is what is should look like.
This is what it does. Notice the color is still in the "contact us" (and all the colors on p.2 are fine).

What version campatibility for Acrobat do you have selected in your export settings? Changing to Acrobat 4 will make it compatible with 4 and later, but you'll wind up falttening the the transparency and heve nasty looking white stitching lines all over the place that will show on screen and print on most desktop devices, not to mention a loss of interactivity, I think.
Reader is free... Tell these people to download an upgrade to the most recent version that will run on their systems rather than trying to dumb down your file.

  • Object with gradient feather disappears upon export to pdf

I'm troubleshooting a file where an object with a gradient feather disappears from the exported .pdf file. The rest of the file is perfect. I've tried different .pdf presets. I've tried moving the offending object to its own layer at the bottom of the layer stack. I've tried copying all the art to a new file. I've tried grouping everything. Nothing is working. I can successfully export to .jpg format. I'm using InDesign CS5 on an iMac. Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Gradient feather display problem in browser

    Hi,
I have two images/photos to which I applied a gradient feather effect. The documment printed fine, but when the PDF is viewed online in Fire Fox, the gradient feather no longer displays and only the sharp edges of the photo are visible. Is there a specific setting when saving to PDF that I need to select for  best viewing online? I'm on a Mac CS 5.5.
    Thanks!

Thanks for the link to the disucssion. I really didn't get a concrete solution from it though.....
@KodaNuka – I don't think there is a simple method achieving the things you want.
An effect like "Gradient Feather" applied to a text frame most likely will force the text to outline paths during output. No Hyperlink will survive that.
It's best to decouple the Hyperlink from the effect by sandwiching a text frame with the hyperlink above the text frame with the effect setting fill color (and stroke color, if applied) to "None".
If that will not work out, you have to redo the hyperlinks in Acrobat Pro.
To view all that successfully in the PDF viewer of your browser (Firefox in your case) you have to output to sRGB and flatten all transparency effects. If you could do that with your PDF Export settings or through PostScript output and distilling to PDF is up to you. Another chance will be flattening and changing the color space in Acrobat Pro if necessary…
    Just my 2 Euro Cents…

  • Does Illustrator have a Gradient Feather tool like InDesign?

CS4...I know it has to be here somewhere, I know the gradient tool in In InDesign but cant find one in Illustrator.  I see the normal feather but it seems to just feather the edges.  I need it to start full on one end and fade out to the other end

Illustrator can feather transparency just as well as InDesign. Better, in fact. But the interface for doing so is convoluted and has long been one of the most asked questions on the forum. Look up Opacity Mask in the help files. Basically, you first create a gradient, gradient mesh, or a number of objects with different grayscale fills, which are then grouped. This object or group is placed above the object, image, or group to be masked and you Make Opacity Mask in the Transparency panel.

  • Color difference after adding gradient feather

    Hi,
As soon as I apply gradient feather to the black box the image color changes drastically.
The imported image is a psd file & in grayscale mode.
This problem exists in CS6 & CC version of indesign
    Any suggestions on fixing this?
    Regards,
    Arihant

I bet it actually looks like that in Overprint Preview before you add the feather, too.
ID does not recognize grasycale color profiles, on import. It takes the numbers and puts them into the K channel of the document's CMYK working space. The transparency effect forces ID to use the overprint preview to display the effect and you get a more accurate on-screen rendition of what your output should look like. It could be lighter or darker, depending on the gray and CMYK profiles involved.
If you want to get a better idea of how your grayscale will look coming out of ID when you are doing the conversion in Photoshop you can create a custom gray space inthe Photoshop color settings by choosing "Load Gray" from the dropdown, then choosing the CMYK profile that you use in ID from the load dialog, and the Black Ink channel will be used.

  • Applying a Gradient Feather with a Drop Shadow...

    Howdy,
I am currently working in Indesign CS3 and I have an outlined image in my document and I am applying a gradient feather so that the image fades from opaque to transparent at the bottom. If I apply a black colored drop shadow to the object the image's color changes slightly because the shadow's color darkens the image where the gradient feather's transparency fades away.
I have checked the box in the shadows menu so that it "Honors the other effects" but it seems to apply no change in the darkening of the bottom of my image. Has there been a fix for this or an update that will eliminate the shadows color effecting my images color?
I was just wondering if you could fix the program so that the shadow takes the gradient feather into consideration and does not interfere with the objects color? Or even add a gradient feather feature to the drop shadow effect itself?
Any suggestions for fixing this other than creating a shadow for the object in Photoshop and importing it into my document. Placing the shadow behind my image and applying a gradient feather that fades out earlier so that the shadows color does not interfere with my image.
Anything on this subject I would be thoroughly grateful for.
    ~Thanks!

Ok sorry this is confusing! Here is the image that I am talking about. I am working in InDesign on a catalog for softball uniforms. I have a ton of these uniform images that I'm attempting to apply a gradient feather as well as a drop shadow. But the drop shadow is effecting the color of the uniforms. I was just wondering it this can be avoided.
Image #1 has both the feather and the drop shadow applied to it. The shadow at the bottom where the image feathers shows through and changes the color of the image. I was just wondering if this can be avoided. You can see the difference it makes when the shadow is not applied on Image 2. I have made sure the drop shadow effect "honors other effects" but it doesn't seem to affect it showing through the feather. I am just wondering if it's possible to avoid having the drop shadow show through the feathered end of an object.
    Thanks for your help everyone!

  • SVG to PDF/AI gradient and transparency issues

This is probably quite off topic for these forums, so apologies for that up front, but I can't seem to get answers in more appropriate places.
I am trying to use inkscape or rsvg-convert, which both use cairo, to convert SVG to PDF.
Firstly, when I open the SVG in Illustrator directly, everything works as expected, but the cairo converted PDF has a couple of problems.
Typically I get "An unknown  shading type was encountered" and the offending shapes are un-editable  "images" with a clipping mask over them.
There are two  circumstances that result in problems for me.
    1) A gradient with  only 2 stops.
In the following example I have duplicated the  offset="0" stop which fixes things and means that the resulting shape  that is filled with this gradient works fine. Without the duplicate  declaration, the gradient is converted to  an un-editable image with a  clipping mask when the PDF is viewed in Illustrator.
       <linearGradient id="ian_symbols_b8a58aafc1f12e74492e9e865b7f569b"  gradientUnits="userSpaceOnUse" x1="113.7275" y1="136.9414" x2="197.0259"  y2="136.9414">
        <stop offset="0" style="stop-color:#927A62"  id="stop1472" />
        <stop offset="0"  style="stop-color:#927A62" id="stop1472_dup" />
        <stop  offset="1" style="stop-color:#93866F" id="stop1474" />
       </linearGradient>
    2) A shape that has  an opacity that is less than "1". I don't know how to fix this one and  still maintain the look of the original. I understand that there are  some issues with transparency and the PDF format, but obviously the full  AI version of the PDF format these days supports transparency.
Does anyone have any experience doing server-side conversions of SVG to PDF and have managed to create a PDF which contains gradients and transparency that are actually editable once opened in Illustrator?
Or does anyone know if there is something more I  can do with the original SVG code to make the opacity work ok in the  final PDF?
    Thanks

Works fine for me as .ai with pdf comptible turned on. You may have input transparency in the wrong location in Illustrator. Change opacity in the gradient palette, and not tint in the color palette.
Opacity is 0 here, anything less tha 100% will create tranaprency. To proof in Illustratopr do a Shift Command D to change your background to a checkerboard pattern.

  • IDCS3 Gradient Feather tool postscript problems

I have noticed that when a customer or myself uses the Gradient Feather effect in a page, the rip I work with at my company (Kodak Prinergy> adobe PS3) will not rip the page and fails. or as my customers have found, it will not create a PDF?
Can any help on this subject, as I have to find workarounds on most jobs, but some it is impossible?

    Derek,
I don't have access to a Prinergy RIP, but I've definitely successfully made PDF files when an IDCS3 Gradient Feather was incorporated in a page.
You'll need either to provide an example file, or give more information about when this happens for you for us to help you.
Does the Prinergy RIP have the latest patches and updates to its software applied? Bugs can occur in RIP software, I'm sure you realize. It may be patched in a later software version.

  • Gradient Feather not printing to PDF or on paper

Hi, I have a file that has a white gradient feather that will not print to PDF or on paper. It only shows it on the screen. I have never had this problem before in the program but seems to have started today. What can I do to fix this?
    Thank you for your time!

I am working with InDesign CS4 on XP.
It is a native gradient created in InDesign.
It did not show up in Overprint Preview.

  • How to create a gradient field in CS5 that doesn't striate when printed?

Can someone explain how to create a large gradient field in CS5 that won't striate when printed? I created a poster, 18" x 24" in which the bottom third gradates from olive to black. When it prints there are thick paralell bands which are  undesirable. The tips I found online go back to 2009 which don't apply to CS5. The directions in the CS5 manual are confusing to me. Is there a simple way to do this?

    Is your monitor well calibrated?
Did you print it locally on your own printer before sending it out?
After you've exhausted everything else, you might consider creating a small test file with the offending gradient, and physically carry it to one of the printing locations, and speak to a technician there. Honestly, it sounds like a profile mismatch, but if this has happened at multiple Kinkos locations, then I agree, it would seem the problem is most likely in the file.
Have you looked at individual channels? (R,G,B)
One other idea: you say it's olive to black ... you could try an olive gradient from 100% opacity to 0% opacity, placed over a solid black layer, (or alteratively, a similar black gradient over solid olive) and see if that improves the output. Beware, some printers are really bad at 0%-5% values. If the gradient is going from 100% of one color to 0%, this might be contributing to the problem. Try going from 100% to 5% if this is the case.
One last thing: can you post a portion of the offending area of the image here?
