Gradient Overlay in Photoshop Elements 8?

Gradient Overlay in Photoshop Elements 8? On the school laptop it has Photoshop elements 8
I want to do a text style with a gradient overlay like here (in the Bubbly text part) :
http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-612453/tutorialsipanda-/?pg=0
But every time I do gradient it does the background not the text.
How do I use Gradient overlay on the text?
GoPDA Windows Mobile(Windows Phone) iPhone Android Tips

Edit: I was unable to view the text example you linked.
One way you can do this is to use a clipping mask:
Here is a video which shows how to apply a gradient to text using a clipping mask:
http://www.pxleyes.com/video-tutorial/photoshop-elements/10901/Versatile-Gradient-Text.htm l
Above video is for PSE 6 but the method is the same. She might call it a clipping group instead of clipping group. (Clipping group = clipping mask; Adobe changed the name not the function.)
Note: Hold in the shift key as you pull the gradient to constrain the gradient so it pulls evenly.

  • If I upgrade to photoshop elements 12 from 10, will  I lose all my stored actions and overlays or will I have to reinstall them all?

I recently purchased a NIkon D4s and my photoshop elements 10 will not accept the RAW files from it.  Someone from this community told me to upgrade to 12 and it will.  If I do so, will I lose my actions and overlays or will they simply transfer to the new 12?  I don't want to reinstall all of them.  It is a pain!!!

Yes, you will need to reinstall everything.

  • HP Deskjet 9650 with Photoshop Elements 7 and Windows 7 not printing

I have a new Windows 7 computer and installed Photoshop Elements 7.0 on it, which works fine, except I cannot print.  I did the installation instructions to use the alternate driver 9800 and can print 8 1/2 X 11 Word documents, but I cannot print a 12X12 scrapbook page to save my soul.  The resume print button keeps blinking and it spits it out blank.  Any help?
I hope I do not have to get a new large format printer.

I just accomplished this without any real problems and am now running with my same license on the newly rebuilt PC.  Here is what I did ...
Originally my PSE7 configuration was set up last year on new Intel I7-based PC running Vista 64 bit version with a retail copy of the PSE7 software, i.e. not the upgrade version.  Once that was setup I imported my catalog from the older Adobe Photoshop Album on my previous system.  That put me at the place you are now, i.e. PSE7 on Windows Vista.
For this upgrade I puchased the upgrade version of Windows 7 and an additional second disk drive.  I installed Windows 7 onto the clean drive, giving me a dual-boot system for either OS.  While booted on the Vista drive, I used the easy-transfer method to write a backup of my Vista files to an external disk drive.  I then rebooted into the Windows 7 drive and used the Easy-transfer tool to reload the files from the external drive. (note; this easy-transfer included >200GB of music/video/image files so it ran for several hours for each phase of the transfer)
Once I verified the directory structure on the new Windows 7 setup, only then did I do the installation of PSE7.  That wnet flawlessly and relicensed without any problems.  Next I was able to open up my catalog in organizer and all of the images were intact.  Since then I have had no issues with the configuration.
So bottom line is you should be fine doing the upgrade regardless of whether you do the upgrade like I did to a new drive or an in-place upgrade overlaying your vista environment.  For the in-place upgrade I would strongly recommend you still do a backup of all of your images and their associated catalog(s) to an external drive.  Win7 is a vast improvement over Vista so I'm sure you won't regret the upgrade but I don't trust any vendor's software upgrade procedure, especially Microsoft so please do the backup first.

  • Remove Green Screen with Adobe Photoshop Elements

    Hi,
I have setup a Green Screen in my home. I took some pictures of my wife with the Green Screen Background and want to remove the Green Screen and replace with a different background. I was able to do this via the Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0 but need help with the Photoshop Elements.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Sridhar

FWIW, She is really easy to select on that green screen if you use a few tricks. The screen shots are in CS3 my preference but worked with Elements limitations to show you how easy she can be selected without any filters.
My end product doesn't look as good as Mark's though. That's a tough act to follow. Thought I'd post this anyway just in case you couldn't get that filter to work in Photoshop Elements 7,
First, make a copy of the image and desaturate it to make it black and white. I prefer using Hue/Saturation from the image menu (CTRL U) and moving desat slider down to -100. Next Invert it (CTRL I), then run levels from the image menu (CTRL L) to push the image towards pure white and black...well close. It should look something like this when these steps are done.
Copy this image to a new layer. (Just in case something goes wrong so you don't have to repeat the last steps). Leave the copy in Normal blend mode. Grab your paint brush tool. Set the brush tool's mode to Overlay blend mode. You will use black and white paint to push dark gray to black and light gray to white. When done, it should look something like this:
Not perfect...I did this really fast and was a bit sloppy and didn't get all of my light grays pushed to whites. Probably not a problem for the hair edges but would need to be fixed for face and body areas as this will be a mask to make the selection.
Select mask that was just made and copy it into your clipboard. Select<All; Edit<Copy. Create and adustment layer mask that has a mask. I used the Solid Color Fill Adjustment layer. Alt click the mask of the adjustment layer you created. It will turn the document white. This is because the mask is now the focus. Now paste. Edit<Paste. This will paste the above mask into the adjustment layer mask. Now, either alt click the mask or click on another layer to remove the focus from the mask. You'll use this adjustment layer as a base to a clipping mask. See next paragraph.
The Solid color fill layer (or whatever you picked) with your mask is going to be the base on which your selection will be built. Create a copy of your original image up above this base layer. Now, hold in the alt key and move your curser in the layers pallete to the line separating these two layers. Notice the cursor changes to an odd symbol...a solid ring and a hollow ring with an arrow. Click the palette on the line separating these two layers. (Release alt key when done.) She should now be covering the mask you created. Areas that are white in the adjustment layer mask will show the original image; areas in black in the adjustment layer mask will be transparent. (Areas that contain shades of gray would be semi-transparent...amount based on the gray's brightness value.)
For the green cast on the edges, I removed that by using a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to remove the green spill over. If you only wanted to effect the girl and not a new background add it to clipping mask. (Same way...alt click the line between her image and the Hue/Saturation layer.)
Not perfect but this is what I came up with based on the above mask:

  • Photoshop Elements 6:   Could not use type tool because the file could not be found

Using Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 well for a while.
Tried to use the Type Tool to overlay text and obtained this error:
Could not use the type tool because the file could not be found
After research, I reset all tools, tried to repair (failed: insert disc one), and then removed/re-installed.  Still have the same problem.
Are the system fonts corrupt or is an Adobe .ini file suspect?
Other reports have suggested using a 3rd-party font manager to inspect/disable fonts.
First wanted to post this error here for feedback/recommendations
Any suggestion on how to recover the Type Tool functionality?

    Adobe Photoshop Elements Repair Workaround
When trying to repair the well-known:  insert disc one, error occurred.  Was able to successfully repair the installation by dragging the entire Adobe Photoshop Elements directory from the original CD-ROM onto a hard drive and executing locally.  Seems it does not like repairing over the CD-ROM but it works correctly if the install source is on disc...

    John,
Yesterday, I decided to completely remove all Adobe products:  PSE 6, Premiere 4, Reader, ActiveX plugins & legacy/old uninstalled product directories that Adobe has left turd-lets around including old Acrobat 3/6 directories.  Used A/D Software to remove all adobe products and then followed your instructions AND the instructions on Adobe's support web site to manually remove these products.
It boiled down to manually removing the entire Adobe directory in Progam Files, "saving" the entire Adobe directory structure in each users (3) Document and Settings in the Application Data and Local Settings (as instructed by you and Adobe) and rebooting.
I also saved the local All Users "configuration" database/cache that contained the Tag and other information to make sure the system was clean
This included following the manual Regit instructions to remove legacy Adobe registry hives.  I deleted all keys for all Adobe product trees that I could locate (following instructions from Adobe).
    Reboot
Scheduled a CHCKDSK on all drives and rebooted
Dragged my complete image library to an archive location and deleted them on the C: drive
    Did a complete system Defrag
Re-installed Adobe and alas still have the same problem with the Type Tool....
The only thing I did not do was selectively remove the "fonts" because various instructions seemed to indicate many are "required" by the windows or other applications and I was not really sure how to identify which ones were safe to remove w/o affecting the core system..  I'll have to re-read these instructions next.
Microsoft has a "Font Validator" tool, but that only checks 1 font at a time and you have to read the "results".  May look for other tools.
Will be able to check the font structure this weekend since it will take some research before I'm comfortable just removing fonts in trial/error mode.  I'll need to make a backup image of my computer before I start this (just in case).
    Thanks for follow-ups too!

The grid does not print. There has to be another source for the visible grid lines on your prints. Suggest that you do the following:
Make sure that your ink cartridges have plenty of ink
Do a deep cleaning of your print head
Align the cartridges as per instructions in the printer's manual
    Do a test print

  • Please help!! photo in wineglass in Photoshop elements 9

I am new to photoshop (or any other editing for that matter). I would love to make a picture effect of a photo in a wine glass and am about to pull my hair out trying to figure this out. I have found some instructions on the internet but am having a hard time following them. I have Photoshop elements 9. I have a picture of a beach scene that I took in Cancun. I uploaded a picture of a wine glass and cut out the wineglass using the quick selection tool and selection tool brush. That part looks pretty good. I can't figure out how to get the picture in the glass. I used the elliptical selection tool and made an oval around the picture. I tried to erase the background of the oval but couldn't figure that out. So I tried to drag the oval to the wineglass and the entire picture moved and covered the glass and the entire beach scene. I tried to do decrease opacity and erase background but that has turned into a sloppy mess. I really want to do this for a friend as a wedding gift but can't seem to figure out how and I am running out of time. Can someone please help me figure out how to do this. Maybe I am doing things in the wrong order. I don't know...but I am sure someone out there can help me. And I sure would appreciate any help I can get.

I would have got back to you earlier but one of my kids wanted on the computer. There's no school tomorrow as it's been canceled because of the blizzard here in the Midwest so I let them stay up late tonight.
You need to soften the edges of the selection. The secret to moving items onto a new background is to add a touch of feather to the selection. The quick select is an awesome tool to get a good selection but it makes hard edges so you often need to take it a step farther and add some feather. You can do that a couple of ways either with the new refine edge dialog or the select<modify<feather command. Since you have PSE 9, I would recommend using the refine edge command. I believe, in Elements that will be in the Select menu. If it isn't listed under that heading, check under the other menu headings in the menu bar.
Above using your items from your post with a slightly feathered edge selection.
Above using your items saved from your post...slightly firmer edge selection and a slight blur added to top portion of background to give it a little depth of field. I used the levels command to firm it up. I'll get into that under the firmer mask image below.
I always use masks so I can show you my actual selection using a screen grab. I started by selecting your wine glass with the quick select tool. I used the brush tool to soften the glass selection on the sides. I intentionally varied the softness for this glass because it seemed to sell the effect more.
I changed my mind and decided on firmer edges for the side of the glass. I firmed them by using the levels command on the mask. Shortcut is Ctrl + L. I used the middle gray slider in the levels command to firm up the glass selections edge.
(I posted both so you could see how the difference in a selection mask can change the blended outcome. IMO, the second mask makes the glass more realistic as the first has the glass edges just a tad too soft. You'll also notice the second image includes a copy of the background layer. I blurred the background then masked bottom portion of the blurred background to create a depth of field effect. You can pull a black to transparent gradient using the gradient tool on a mask to fade the sharp and blurred background version together.
My Couple mask is a bit sloppy but you get the idea.
Couple layer visible. I went off of everything put together not necessarily what the individual layer looked. On a larger high resolution image, I would have probably made them more opaque and also cleaned up their mask better. It's tricky working with small images.
Glass mask...screen blend mode 25% opacity. I won't post a screen grab of that layer as there isn't much to show.
Above is alternate version with couple opaque and the couple mask cleaner. I'm not sure which version I prefer...
Edit: I think I prefer this alternate couple more opaque version.
Above is alternate version with couple on their own layer.
Above is alternate version couple mask.

  • Re: Exporting Gradient Overlays w/ Transparency

I am currently using photoshop CS5,
I have a layer that is a vector mask over a solid color. The fill of the layer is black, so when i set it to screen it's transparent. I then have a gradient overlay effect applied to the layer that fades from a solid color to a transparency. There is no blending mode applied to the gradient overlay, so it shows up as normal. It looks exactly how i want it to look!
The problem is when i try to flatten this layer, or export this layer as a PNG. The black from the fill shows up where it's supposed to be transparent, even though it's not otherwise visible. If i try to delete the fill all together, and use use a transparent block to overlay my gradient, it won't work, as there is nothing for the gradient to overlay on. If i try to make the gradient using the gradient tool and then using the vector shape layer, it is imprecise, and i know of no way to control how the gradient is applied, other than guessing with the mouse. I have a bunch of these shapes that need to stack and use the exact same gradient alignment, and i need to be able to export them as png's. If i make them in illustrator and port them over to photoshop, there is still an issue with pixels smearing along the edges of my shapes.
Here's an example, the appropriate fading is on the top, but when i flatten or export i get the bottom:
I am using many more shapes some of which are more complicated, and i really want precise control over the gradients.
    Thanks!

  • Photoshop Elements (ver 10) - Suddenly tools do not work

I have used Photoshop Elements (v. 10) for years with no problems.  Suddenly today, 10/18/14 it is all screwed up.  Example:
I can overlay a text box, on a picture, but then cannot edit it (i.e. point size, type face, color).  Also, cannot copy & paste a small secton of

  • Selective Color control in Photoshop Elements?

I am considering a purchase of Photoshop Elements for Mac. I am familiar with Photoshop 5.5 and I often use the Selective Color feature found in the Image menu (Image:Adjust:Selective Color...) Is there a similar feature in Photoshop Elements?

Access to the earlier Curves dialog has been curtailed by Adobe programmatically. I haven't yet checked into inserting the new Curves diaolog into things as a replacement...but it seems that it wouldn't be friendly. My technique is to use Gradient Maps as curves instead. You will be able to save/store presets, have a full preview, make adjustable adjustment layers, and other useful things!
