Gradient overlays?

I'm just trying to figure out how to work within the limitations of the Nile plugin, I know there are bound to be missing features right now.
I'm by no means a Photoshop expert, right now I'm just evaluating the technology.
So I created a rounded rectangle in PS CS3, and gave the layer an effect using a gradient overlay. However, when exported the file for that layer is just a flat color. Is this expected behavior right now, or is it a bug? Is there a supported way of doing gradients? This appeared to be the easiest way to do it in PS.
I had two other layers that came through fine, except for an outer glow which is expected according to the release notes. I was able to see my layers in a running FX script, except for the gradient.

Filter effects and blendings/overlays are not supported in this release. You have to either apply the gradient directly (through the gradient tool) or rasterize the layer.

I want to do a text style with a gradient overlay like here (in the Bubbly text part) :

But every time I do gradient it does the background not the text.
How do I use Gradient overlay on the text?

One way you can do this is to use a clipping mask:
Here is a video which shows how to apply a gradient to text using a clipping mask:
    http://www.pxleyes.com/video-tutorial/photoshop-elements/10901/Versatile-Gradient-Text.htm l
Above video is for PSE 6 but the method is the same. She might call it a clipping group instead of clipping group. (Clipping group = clipping mask; Adobe changed the name not the function.)
Note: Hold in the shift key as you pull the gradient to constrain the gradient so it pulls evenly.

  • Re: Exporting Gradient Overlays w/ Transparency

I am currently using photoshop CS5,
I have a layer that is a vector mask over a solid color. The fill of the layer is black, so when i set it to screen it's transparent. I then have a gradient overlay effect applied to the layer that fades from a solid color to a transparency. There is no blending mode applied to the gradient overlay, so it shows up as normal. It looks exactly how i want it to look!
The problem is when i try to flatten this layer, or export this layer as a PNG. The black from the fill shows up where it's supposed to be transparent, even though it's not otherwise visible. If i try to delete the fill all together, and use use a transparent block to overlay my gradient, it won't work, as there is nothing for the gradient to overlay on. If i try to make the gradient using the gradient tool and then using the vector shape layer, it is imprecise, and i know of no way to control how the gradient is applied, other than guessing with the mouse. I have a bunch of these shapes that need to stack and use the exact same gradient alignment, and i need to be able to export them as png's. If i make them in illustrator and port them over to photoshop, there is still an issue with pixels smearing along the edges of my shapes.
Here's an example, the appropriate fading is on the top, but when i flatten or export i get the bottom:
I am using many more shapes some of which are more complicated, and i really want precise control over the gradients.
    Thanks!

    Try a Gradient Fill Layer.

  • Why won't PS CS6 load my gradient overlay swatches now

Without proper system info and details about your document nobody can tell anything. The behavior may indicate that you are in the wrong color mode or use a specific layer type or layer blend behavior that interferes with the gradient overlay...

  • Gradient Overlay in Elements - Help!!

Is there a plugin or a way to get the gradient overlay layer style in photoshop elements?
I've searched high and low but can't find a way of doing gradient overlay in PSE 7....

  • Problem with gradient overlay

    Hi all,
I used to use Ps normally, but since I've reinstalled my Windows recently so I had to reinstall Ps as well. However, when I used Gradient Overlay, it didn't work out correctly as it's supposed to do: no matter how I configured the option, it just filled a solid color instead of a gradient (as number 1 in picture). When I clicked reverse, it filled with the other solid color.
Number 2 I used Gradient Tools to make it easier to compare.
Anyone have a solution for this?

You could have accidently dragged over the object when the Layer Style window was open.
With the Layer Style window open, drag on the fill of the object itself (the pointer will change to the Move cursor) and see if the gradient boundary comes back into view.

  • Banding occurs using gradient overlay on shape

I have a shape with a #ffffff to #f6f6f6 gradient overlay applied. It looks fine in PS but when printed on the laser printers at Kinko's becomes horribly banded. Strangely, when printed on my inexpensive ink jet it looks normal.
I need to fix this before sending the file off to print. I don't usually use PS for brochures and such (usually AI) so I'm not sure what to do expect give the entire shape a color overlay or just go with nothing at all, which would be a shame.

This article explains the problem. Apparently there are simply too many "steps" the printer has to make so that printing such a subtle gradient becomes impossible:
    http://blog.imagesmith.com/2013/05/17/new-40/
The problem is I basically have a 400px high parallelogram with a 90 degree gradient from top to bottom, #ffffff to #f6f6f6. I am not sure how to use the dodge tool precisely in such a small area.
    Would adding noise help?

  • Gradient overlay won't move with item

I've created a button with a gradient overlay, but when I click and drag the button, the gradient overlay stays put, it won't move with the button. Is there an option I'm overlooking to anchor the gradient with the item I've created? I've never seen this before. I'm on Photoshop CC 14.0 on a Mac.

How are you creating the gradient overlay: via layer style, shape fill properties, or adjustment layer?  All except the adjustment layer will move with the button.  For the adjustment layer, you need to select both layers and link them together with the chain icon in the layer pallet.

  • How would I go about making a gradient overlay in AE

So, I recently made the move from Lightworks over to the Creative Cloud suite and I'm trying to figure out how to accomplish some of the same effects that I had produced in Lightworks. I can figure out most things that I need to do in Premiere Pro on my own, but I'm having trouble trying to figure out how to reproduce an animated image overlay. Put simply, the steps are:
    1. Gradient slides into the viewing area and the entire height of the screen from the right side and goes about 35% of the way from right to left during the animation.
    2. While the gradient is fading in, icon images of game materials are slowly fading in.
    3. Text describing the amounts of each item needed are are also slowly fading in during this time.
    4. After about 2 seconds, the gradient stops advancing from right to left, the text is @ 100% opacity and so are the icon images.
    5. This lasts about 6-8 seconds with the information fully visible on the screen.
    6. The process reverses itself, and everything fades out over the same 2 second time period.
An example of exactly what I'm referring to is here (linked to correct timecode just before animation @ 1:12 seconds): Gradient Overlay Animation in Action
Its a very simple animation at its core. I may just be looking around in the wrong places or using the wrong keywords (I'm very new to Adobe overall) so I'm not sure exactly where to start with these kinds of effects. Really, what I need to know is what tools or animation effects do I need to acomplish the gradient portion. I assume the other items are just titles and image keying, but the gradient I haven't figured out.
Also, is this simple enough it can be done in Premiere, or am I better off using AE to accomplish this. Ideally its something I would want to reuse as a preset if possible to use in future videos and I may pretty it up and make it more stylized, but I really just need to figure out how to go about making the gradient animation for now.

I would create a shape layer with a gradient fill. The gradient would have both color and opacity adjustments so that the opacity on the left edge was 0 and on the right was somewhere between 50 and 80.
Then I would add a soft edge linear wipe on my text layer.
Place both layers in their final position and adjust blend modes if necessary to get the look you want.
Parent the text layer to the shape layer
Animate the shape layer position to move it off screen to the right
AE BASICS are the only things used in creating this kind of effect.

  • Why can't I find the gradient editor in CS6 to change the gradient overlay color of my text?

    Its here in CS4

Thanks, but I downloaded it today, I bought it this morning to design a logo... I've been searching google for the past 4 hours and I'm about ready to pull my hair out lol
I keep finding people with the same problem, look
I am using photoshop cs6 and following a web tutorial on making a business card. One step I can't figure out.
"Apply a linear gradient layer style to the warped shape. Use #841618 for the darker color in the gradient and #e82d33 for the lighter color. Once that’s done, use the Move Tool (V) to move the shape near the bottom of the canvas."
I am in the gradient overlay and I can pick what type of gradient and stuff. But I can not figure out how to change the lighter and darker color for the gradient overlay Maybe this tutorial is pre photoshp cs6?

  • HELP! Gradient overlay not working. Gradient Overlay has stopped working! Why?

    Hi
First off if i apologise if i am in the wrong place/not posting correctly etc. It's my first time posting in this forum. I am havign an issue at work. I have always used the layer style - gradient overlay to make my 'buttons' for e-shots/newsletters. But yesterday it just stopped working. Below is a screen shot to try demonstrate clearly what I mean -
As you can see, the button on the composition should have a gradiant of orange and blue (not the actual colours im using - was just a gradual red -? dark red - but for clarity in the image i picked this default gradient).
I've tried resetting to default, i've looked at an old photoshop folder with a gradient overlay and made sure alll the setting are the same. I've tried making the actual button object different sizes but nothing works. (When i make it larger, it does eventually show the blue, but as soon as i *apply*, it goes to flat orange again)
Anyone have any help atall please? Like i said it's been doing this since yesterday - This is a very basic thing that I need to be able to do for my job - flat colours for a button look rubbish!
Oh i'm using photoshop cs5 on a mac incase thats important
    Thanks in advance
edit: i uninstalled photoshop cs5 and reinstalled it and it didnt change anything.

Do you have Align with Layer checked?
Or move the gradient on the image while the layer styles dialog is open (probably moving it up) , as maybe the adjustment is such that only the orange is showing.
Does it make a difference if you view the image at actual pixels (100% view)?
If all else fails i'd reset the photoshop preferences and see if that gets things back to normal:

  • Gradient Overlay Angle

I have an item that has a gradient overlay added as a layer style. It has an angle of 90 degrees. What I need to do is to rotate that object 45 degrees but so that it keeps the gradient angle I've selected. At the moment if I rotate the object then the gradient overlay keeps at 90 degrees of the document as opposed to 90 degrees of the actual object it's attached to.
Any ideas how to lock the angle to the object?

You could convert the layer to a Smart Object.

  • How can I use multiple overlay effects simultaneously in Photoshop?

There are 3 overlay effects available in Photoshop as layer styles: Color, Gradient and Pattern. The problem: these effects come in a strictly fixed order!
Is it possible to make a translucent Gradient Overlay over a Color Overlay using only layer styles? Or a Multiply Pattern and Color Overlays?

Another option would be Grouping the Layer, applying one Style to the Group, grouping that Group, applying the next Style to that Group, etc.
