Gradient transparency - how to in AI CS5.5

How do I create a gradient transparency on an image in CS 5.5 AI - I am a first time user of this platform.

In this example the Color Stop Opacity is set to 0 for the two bottom colors.
You can set the Opacity Blend Mode to e.g. Overlay in the timeline.
You can draw any shape in the titler with the Pentool.
For feathering drop a Fast Blur on the title in the timeline.

I am trying to take a layer, and simply make it go from solid picture to a gradient transparency, so that it gradually disappears. It is hard to explain, but I hope you understand. Duplicate background layer, work on background copy layer
Access the gradient tool (G), and in the tool's option bar select the foreground-to-transparent, linear gradient. Be sure that the color chips (lower left) are set to black for foreground and white for background. See my screen shot above. Note transparency is checked.
I drew the gradient from right to left, about 3/4 way.
If the gradient is too profound, you can reduce the opacity of the background copy layer.
If you need to start over again during practice, delete the background copy layer and go back to step #2.

Aterm/Urxvt gradient transparency?

I can't find how to do it. I've looked through the man files and it looks like the only way is with "themes" with Afterstep (i'm not switching from Fluxbox)...I would like to use Xdefaults if at all possible.

I'll give it a try, but it seems that setting transparency in the terminal would nullify an image, or making a gradient-transparent image the background might just show the default background of aterm/urxvt. Other than that I'm not sure what to try...there are a lot of options that I don't understand in the mans.
Unfortunately, my semester is almost over so my trial and error playing time is limited for a couple weeks...thanks for the thought

I just purchased CS6 and installed it -- everything works. But I also have CS5 -- Windows 7 Professional 64-bit -- How do I install CS5? CS5 does not appear in the Control Panel "Programs" listing.
Is there an "uninstaller" somewhere??

Thank you -- however, it was installed and working BUT even though I "unhid" all files, Windows 7 still not report it -- no idea why.
It doesn't even report CS6.
But, as you suggested, the Cleaner Tool -- not for the "Cloud" did the uninstall. I will have to go into the Registry and remove any remnants.

If you do not intend to use the older machine any longer, you should consider deactivating it and uninstalling it from that machine. If you think you might need the option to use it, you are allowed to maintain two licensed installations.

How does one transfer CS5 actions for use with CS6?

CS6 installation, which was uneventful, has transferred none of my actions from my copy of CS5. The CS5 actions are located in the actions folder of the APPLICATION/PHOTOSHOP CS5/PRESETS/ACTIONS. The "actions" folder in application support/adobe in my library is empty, and has always been so.
Only the CS6 default actions are located in the same folder for CS6.
I use imac i7, lion.
Note that i also have CS3 and CS4 on my machine. This due to recent upgrade to CS5 and recent upgrade to LION, and my general paranoia.
Must i load each action into CS6, one at a time?

On a Mac - There are multiple ways to do this. I have done them both ways. In order to do this you need to know where you have your actions stored, and you can move them all at once if you have them stored in the same location.
1. You can load an action ONE AT TIME into your actions palette by:
     A. Open up the action palette and click on the little arrow with 4 little horizontal lines next to it on the upper right corner of the actions palette.
     B. Select "Load Actions" and a Finder window will open up and you can search your computer through this window for your actions.
     C. Click on the action from the Finder window then click 'Open' at the bottom right of the finder window.
     D. To save these so that they appear every time you open up your actions palette, go back to the little arrow at the top right of the actions palette and when the drop down window opens- click on 'Save Actions'. It will select the location where the          actions are currently stored as the place to save them. If you want to change that path, you can do it at this time in the little path window. I just leave it, since I keep all my actions stored in the same file.
2. TO MOVE MULTIPLE ACTION SETS AT ONCE
     A. Open up CS6 (or CS5) and move the Photoshop workspace it to the right side of your computer screen so you can see your desktop on the left side.
     B. Open up your Finder search window from your dock (the square blue head icon thingy for those who are new to photoshop). Move this to the left side of your screen so you can see the Photoshop work space on the right and the Finder window          on the left. In the Finder window, navigate to the file where all your actions are stored, select all the actions in the file (command+A will select everything in the file if you are actively inside the open file) or you can select multiple files           individually by continuously holding down the command key and clicking on the different actions you want to move.
     C. With the Photoshop workspace visible on the right, and the actions palette open so you can see that the actions actually transferred - In the Finder window, click the selected actions you want to load and drag them over to the Photoshop           workspace. I did this without an image open, I just dragged them onto the empty workspace. The actions should all appear immediately in the actions palette that is open.
     D. To save these so that they appear every time you open up your actions palette, go back to the little arrow at the top right of the actions palette and when the drop down window opens click on 'Save Actions'. It will select the location where the           actions are stored as the place to save them. If you want to change that path, you can do it at this time in the little path window. I just leave it, since I keep all my actions stored in the same file.

Help>deactivate on any CS5 app to deactivate the suite. Then just install it on the new machine.

There are many who would say, based only on empiric data (boo) and not opinion (yay), that the most accurate raw conversions would be obtained using the Nikon software and not secondary processors like the Adobe converter. The DNG process makes irreversible changes to the raw data which may or may not matter but the DNG is not the same as the original raw file.
You can do the experiment yourself, for FREE, and compare different methods of raw conversion. You may be surprised at what you see. You have to be because different converters tune to different image characteristics. Don't be taken in about claims Adobe makes for its convertor without proving them to yourself. Adobe has made deliberate pre-set choices for its converter and they may not be the best for you. Or they may be, as we have all become so used to what Adobe chooses we think we chose it ourselves.
If I were able to afford, and had the energy to lug around a D800e, I might not want to compromise the image quality I just shelled out such massive bucks to obtain using the Adobe converter without proving that was the best option for me, but I don't do it for a living. Also, if you can shell out for a D800e and are enamored of the Adobe Converter realize it only costs $10/month for a CC subscription, possibly tax deductible, and you can still retain your older version of PS. The CC version of PS allows use of the ACR as a filter layer, if you are fond of the converter tools (which are much improved in the latest version).

How do you updated CS5 extended when you keep getting a message to close the program but the program is already closed? I have tried to do the update when I first turn the computer on, go directly to Photoshop, go to update and click on that, get new screen, close Photoshop, and I still get a message to close the already closed program. I believe I have to open Photoshop to get to the update area, so I don't know how to get around this issue. I hope someone can help me.

Thank you for answering. However, when I opened the Task Manager and looked at all the processes that were running, the only things running were the Task Manager and the browser. None of the Photoshop programs were running. So, do you have any other suggestions?
