Gradient with stroke problem Illustrator CS3

We make a gradient object in Illustrator CS3 and give it a stroke which is centered. Then we rotate the object and the gradient rotates with the object.
But then when we put the stroke alignment to inside or outside the gradient fails. It shows the gradient in the original 0-position instead of the angle we have created. When we put the stroke alignment back to center the gradient shows as we meant it to show again.
When stroke alignment is on outside or inside before we rotate the object it shows the same problem.
But when I copy an object from CS2 with an angled gradient and a inside or outside aligned stroke. The problem isn't there. When we start copying the object within CS3 the problem shows again (not when I use alt-key to copy, but with ctrl+c and then ctrl+v, ctrl+f or ctrl+b).
Illustrator CS2 didn't have this problem. But now in CS3 we have it. I used to have this same problem in old versions from Macromedia Flash. But I never had it with Illustrator.
Is this a bug or do we need to handle our gradients in a different way when using Illustrator CS3?

It's a memory issue. If you scale your artwork down (say, to 50%), then save, it should work (it can be scaled up in the page layout software). If you're using raster effects you'll have to make sure they scale as well and that your raster effects resolution is appropriate for the final output size.

  • Outline Stroke in Illustrator CS3 Broken?

It seems that Outline Stroke in Illustrator CS3 is broken in more ways than one. The bug I'm struggling with at the moment is that Outline Stroke seems to ignore the strokes alignment. For example, if I have the stroke of an object set to "outside" or "inside" (instead of center), outline stroke creates the outline of the stroke as if it were "center" aligned. I've checked that in CS4 this bug has been fixed, but I don't have access to CS4 at work. Does anyone know of a work around or patch that resolves this, or is an upgrade to CS4 the only option?
On a side note, Illustrator CS3 has to be the buggiest adobe application I've ever dealt with. It has so many little annoying bugs, most of which are fixed in CS4. I shouldn't have to pay for an upgrade to CS4 just to get bugs fixed though, that seems wrong.

  • Problems with saving in Illustrator CS3 - Windows

I'm using Illustrator CS3, Windows XP. Even the smallest files take a very long time to save. I try to save and it initally appears as if nothing is happening. If I click again, a portion of my screen goes white and the hour glass sits for what feels like forever while "Not responding" appears next to Illustrator in the bar. Eventually it finishes. Have run into the same problem with PhotoShop a couple times as well. Seems to have started after my upgrade to CS3. Can anyone help?

"it initally appears as if nothing is happening" - no-no, disk indicator should be bright and nearly no-blinking!
Solutions are (depending on the problem severity):
    1. Make more layers (even for the same kind of objects, especially for texts)
    2. Use RAID 5 disks for scratch files (VelocyRaptor is the best choice)
    3. Use i-RAM for scratch files (if the project not too big)
    4. Use RIndMA disk (http://hardwareforall.com/ww/serverRAMdisk.html) for scratch files

  • Problems with DCS files & Illustrator CS3.

I'm a graphic artist in a screenprinting shop who has been presented with a problem I can't figure out the answer to. I have been using the VueRite Spot Process software for simulated process separations for over a year now. It works great and I was able to just place the DCS file into my Illustrator document using the Place option in the file menu. It would preserve all my spot colors, and I could make my simulated process separations in Illustrator with no problems.
But out of nowhere, all of a sudden it is giving me an error when I try to place the DCS file.
The error I get when trying to Place the DCS file in my Illustrator file says verbatim: "DCS EPS files cannot be opened or embedded. Please place this file using the Link option". No matter what I do now, I cannot get these DCS files into Illustrator, which is posing a bit of a problem as you might imagine.
Maybe I'm just overlooking something vitally important here, but I don't recall changing anything from when I was able to Place the DCS files into Illustrator. It makes no sense!
If anyone can offer any valuable advice I would be most grateful.
    Thanks,
    LeAnn

Leaving the file as a grayscale PSD file with no 'background' image works well enough. The spot channels are retained and I can embed the image in the sep file. The amount of time I was spending waiting on Illy to process all the channels for DCS files at 5000x3800p at 7-10 colors deep was unbelievable. Because we had an older Aspect RIP, we were 'group think' limited to believing what worked for the older unit was the best way for the new Harlequin, and what couldn't be done in AI10 couldn't be done in CS3/4. We were so sure it didn't work we never tried it. A few days on the forums and some snarkiness from Wade we had a better solution and workflow and file management has improved 10 fold. I guess the point I'm trying to make is if you can get away from using DCS files, do it. Having made this shift, I've cut my wait time tremendously.
For the PSD file, you have to leave the color mode intact, you can un-assign the CMYK values for output.
You'll note the PSD file is half the size of the DCS file, there's no degradation in separations quality and the memory management is much improved. Smaller files, better performance...yadda yadda.
2 cents. Here's an example set. Both the PSD and DCS (from same file) placed in Illy, side by side there's no comparison.

  • Stroke issues Illustrator CS3

    Hello,
When i give outlined text in illustrator CS3 a stroke of 0,1pt it seems like
the stroke is put on in an angle (like its done with a brush)
Expanding the stroke makes the problem even clearer.
This problem seems to become less when i boost the stroke to 0,15pt.
Opening the same document in CS2 gives no problems at all.. the stroke works as it should do.
    Any ideas on this?

  • Problems illustrator cs3 on windows 7 64bit

I've got a problem with my new computer, its a new hp workstation with windows 7 64 bit. Illustrator cs3 uses just a smal part of my virtual memory and is not stable. When i try to export to psd or jpeg it runs out of memory. My computer got a quad-core processor with more then 6 gb installed RAM.
Is there a way to avoid or to cure this problem?

My computer got a quad-core processor with more then 6 gb installed RAM.
Of no relevance whatsoever. As a mostly single-threaded 32bit app, AI doesn't care for any such things. assuming, bloat features would not get in the way, you could probably run it on a 10 year old machine and get the same performance. Anyway, CS3 is not safe on Win 7, even more so the 64bit version, so this is probably all that needs saying. You can toy around with compatibility modes and all that, but whether this will help you in any way, is anybody's guess. so at the risk of sounding like big red A's marketing department, giving the CS4 trial a spin and then upgrading might be worth your time and money...

  • Problems with scaling in illustrator CS3.

Recently while working on a large file in Illustrator I've had a problem with scaling. Normally I scale with handles, and rarely with the input box. Now I can only scale with the input box. I have gone to preferences but that seems fine, (i think?). Is this a new glitch? Is their a way to solve this problem. Thanks.

You probably mistakenly hit the shortcut to turn it off at some point.

  • With large files Illustrator CS3 will not generate preview-picture, why?

When Illustratorfiles (size from 8 meg and up) are saved as saved as eps-files the program gives a warning that it can not create a tiff-file as preview fot the file.
If I save the files as Illustrator 8 open in in 8 and saved there is not problem. (Exept that the test is taken down into a number of bits).
Why can't I get a preview-picture? What can I do to solve in in CS3?

  • Help with installation of Illustrator (CS3 on Windows Vista)

I downloaded Illustrator onto my laptop, but when I go and try and nstall it, it gives a message saying: installation cannot continue until the following applications are closed: internet explorer.
Please close the applications listed above and click 'try again' to continue the installation.
The thing is that I do close IE!! I've tried re-starting, pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL, but nothing works! I am seriously desperate. What is the problem and how do I go about fixing it? I need Illustrator installed.
    Mere

I do not know your exact problem and I do not know if this is going to do the job but for what it is worth. Uninstall IE restart your computer then install AI. Then reinstall IE.
As I say I do not know if this would work but it might be worth a try.

  • Need help with Trapping on Illustrator CS3

    Hello,
I'm a graphic design student taking a class on digital pre-publishing, I'm having a difficult time with some trapping assignments.I'm supposed to do manual and automatic trapping using spot and manual colors, knocking away CMY colors by three points on a keepaway but I have no idea what I'm doing. If anyone can help me out, I'd appreciate it very much. My email address is [email protected] I can also be contacted through Yahoo IM.

  • Right -click "Open With" shows old Illustrator 10, not newer CS3

At work we have Photoshop CS3 and Illustrator CS3. Due to a large archive of graphics we keep an older version of Illustrator 10.0 for files that just don't open in CS.
I'm on a new machine with more memory so I want to give this Bridge a chance. But I just found it totally useless for Illustrator.
The first day I used it I went to open a PDF in Illustrator, so in Bridge I right click and go to open with to only find Illustrator 10 and Photoshop CS3 listed. No Illustrator CS3. Nor any option to browse and choose a different app.
I went through file associations, and changed all associations with 10 to CS3, but that doesn't solve how to open PDFs in Illustrator CS3 from Bridge without changing its default app from Acrobat.
    Here's what I mean:
    http://premium1.uploadit.org/TimothyB/bridge.jpg
No where is there an option to tell CS3 Bridge to see Illustrator CS3 instead of version 10. I imagine this might be due to the order the techs installed Illustrator? I hope this doesn't mean I need a tech to mess with my computer to reinstall everything until it shows up as CS3 instead of 10, there are already so many problems that can happen from having two versions installed.

In XP Pro, not there to be 100% sure, that "open with" already has Illustrator CS3 listed and no version 10, the opposite of what Bridge shows.
I'll try it, just in case that helps update Bridge.
    Thanks

  • My A. Illustrator CS3 (v. 13.0.0) will not update to any of the latest versions

For several weeks already, my Adobe Updater has been trying to update to the next version (13.0.1) and I kept getting the same message:
    Message: Installing the patch....
An error occurred during installation. The update cannot be applied to the product. Please re-install the product and try again.
I re-install the program twice from the original DVD. Yesterday, I downloaded the newest upgrade 13.0.2, ran the upgrade and I am still getting the same message as above.
Should I download the newest free trial of A. Illustrator CS3 and then activated with my serial number? Will the free trial have all the bells and whistles? Does anybody have any suggestion as to what to do to get a clean update? Thank you.
    Sal

OK ALL. Fair dinkum. It took me a while as well with updates to illustrator CS3 13.0.0 to 13.0.02. After reading through all the forums, there seemed to be no answer. BUT this is what I found to work for me!.
After reinstalling illustrator (creative suite standard) quite a few times, on my mac, and also another mac, and then updating on a new mac...again illustrator would not update!!!!
WHATEVER YOU DO DONT INSTALL THE FLASH LITE 3.0 update. When updating your program(s), that is creative suite, or whatever, photoshop, version cue, bridge, indesign etc etc... I found that if you check the preferences in the install process, DONT CLICK FLASH LITE 3.0.
S*it after that I managed to get all the programs to update with no problems.
Good luck everyone! Hope it works for you as it did for me.

  • Illustrator CS3 - "Not enough memory to place the file."  Help!!!???

I have a new machine running XP Pro 64.  Intel i7 processor, 12 gb ram.
I am trying to place a fairly small Photoshop image (with layers) into Illustrator CS3.  I have done this countless times with XP 32 bit os.
But now, I cannot place even a small Photoshop image into Illustrator... I keep getting the error "Not enough memory to place the file."
I tried the suggestion of 'right-clicking' the Illy launch icon and going to properties/compatibility and then selecting "Run this program in compatibility mode for..."  and then I check marked Windows XP.
Someone else said this worked in Vista 64.....but it DID NOT work for XP 64.....dang it.
    Any suggestions???
    Thanks

Well..... I just tried the same function on my 64 bit Leopard operating system on my MacBook Pro just for kicks.  Worked flawlessly!!
So, why won't it work on XP 64 bit? Is this a case of 'the mac os is just better?"
Talk about flame bait -- You trying to start the platform wars again? ;-D
Can anyone tell me if they can place a Photoshop image from WINDOWS 7 64 bit OS into Illustrator without issue?  We're talking 'PLACE' .... not paste.
Don't know about Windoze 7; but that operation works in Vista x64. XP x64 is
quite flaky at times. It was never finished IMHO.
Sure would like to know.  I'd upgrade if it made the difference.

  • Problems with line widths smaller that 1 pt in Illustrator CS3 in Spanish

I am asking this for a friend who doesn't speak English; I don't work in Illustrator and don't even know the program. She is using Illustrator CS3 in Spanish under Windows XP Service Pack 2 also in Spanish in a machine with 4 GB RAM and 500 GB HD. As in many non English speaking countries, the decimal separator in Spanish speaking countries is the comma (,), not the point (.).
Her problem is related with applying line widths smaller that 1 pt using the dropdown list of values. Values smaller that 1 pt appear in the list with a point, not a comma, as separator: 0.25 pt, 0.50 pt and 0.75 pt instead of the expected 0,25 pt, 0,50 pt and 0,75 pt. This wouldn't matter at all; the problem is that trying to apply any of these values resuls in 1 pt wide lines. She has made a video (less than one minute) that explains the situation much better than I could do:
    http://es.tinypic.com/usermedia.php?uo=AE87RzhYHCdn5HPHtpPkoA%3D%3D
Curiously, if she introduces values by hand, they are accepted in these two forms: 0,25 pt, and 1/4 pt, and applied correctly, both showing as 0,25 pt (not 0.25 pt).
Of course she can introduce values by hand every times she needs thin lines, but this is a wokaround, not a solution to her problem. Which is aggravated by the fact that she constantly has to use the thiner lines.
In desperation, she reinstalled Illustrator CS2, where the problem does not exist and everything works as expected. But she needs the new features in CS3.
I apologize if this is a known issue with a known solution, but I couldn't find anything about it in the FAQs, and after a couple of searches and wading through several pages of the topic list of this forum.

Back to report. I suggested to my friend to try Jacob's idea first, as it was the easier and fastest. However, I also suggested a small change, due to the following. As the dropdown list was already showing points as decimal separators, I thought it might be better not to change the language. I suggested instead to customize the settings for numbers in her chosen Spanish, changing the decimal separator from the comma to the point, and the thousands separator from the point to the comma.
She has just reported that she changed the language from Spanish to English, and then back to Spanish; and then she customized the separators as I had suggested. That did it; with this change, she can apply the smaller widths using the dropdown list, and she is so happy with her success, that she isn't going to try James's suggestion for the time being, although she may do it later on.
By the way, my friend lives in another country and we are communicating through the Forums in Spanish. This explains why communications have been very slow, and also why I don't know if she shifted from Spanish to English and back to Spainsh because this made no difference, or for some other reason. In any case, she asked me to thank very heartly Jacob and James for their help.
