Gradients and the eye dropper tool

When you're editing a gradient within the shape (as opposed to in the Gradients palette), is there any way to use the eye dropper tool to sample an existing color? In-shape gradient editing (or whatever Adobe calls it) is useless without the eye dropper.

Hi, I came looking for an answer to this very question... but now I have figured out a way to do what you want to do.
1. Select the object you want to make into a gradient and make it so... it'll be the dreaded white to black
2. Select the colour that has the fil that you want to use for one end of the gradient
3. Now Select the gradient and notice that the fill you previously selected is in the "last color" box in the color tab group.
4. Now drag the color from the "last color" box to the gradient color box
5. repeat as necessary... click color, then gradient, then drag the previous colour to the gradient color box.
Hope this helps :-)

  • Trouble with the Eye Dropper tool

The Eye Dropper tool is acting funky. It was preventing me from picking up the color of my template when in outline mode - instead selecting no fill and no stroke. I finally got it to work by unchecking "Appearance" in the tool options. I didn't actually change any settings inside appearance (everything inside is still checked). That did allow me to select the templates color, but now it is also selecting my "path color". If my layer's color is set to Cyan for example, eye dropper actually selects cyan if i click on the path.
Is there a way to allow template color selection but avoid path color selection?
EDIT: I just discovered that these settings don't even pick up the template color correctly. They choose the color of the auto-dim/opacity that occurs when setting a template.

When working from a template in outline mode, put the template on a template layer (see manual on how to do that). Then work on another layer. Only that second layer should be in outline mode.
Then, when picking up colors from a template pixel image, press the shift key when picking up the color with the eyedropper. Of course what Jacob says about screen values remains.
When asking questions in the forum, please be very specific about the tools you use and the artwork you use them on.

  • How do I copy just the color with the Eye Dropper Tool?

Anytime I use the tool to copy a color, the entire format copies and changes the look of the object I already have selected. Is there a way to set my preferences so I only copy color with the Eye Dropper tool?

Hmm...I'm not sure what's going wrong, but even that doesn't seem to work. I think using Shift will help fine, because I do still benefit from copying objects in the same format. But I still appreciate the help. Thanks.

  • After I chose a color with the eye dropper tool, the filler fills in a grayer version of the color, for some reason.

I have CS3 and after I chose a color with the eye dropper tool, the filler fills in a grayer version of the color for some reason. Everything was fine till I accidentally picked the color sampler tool instead of the eye dropper tool. I undid that, but then after that everything with the regular eye dropper tool and the fill tool got messed up. How can I fix it?

Sorry, I am new to the forum, and a novice with not much knowledge about computers. Sorry if some terms that I use here may not be entirely correct, as I am ignorant of terms of the trade. My Operating system is Mac 10.6.8. I am using Photoshop 10.0.1. I am doing a many layered color RGB setting artwork from scanned and photo images, 8 bits/channel. I have been working on this project for a month without any problems. I was using the eye dropper tool. I selected a color in my artwork and it showed up in the background color box, in the tools window, as a match from the sample that I had taken. Then I selected an area, with the lasso tool, and I accidentally picked the tool called "color sample tool", that puts a little target on the sample area and then a box pops up with numbers that move when the tool moves. That wasn't what I wanted, so I got out of there and chose the eye dropper, I selected the color, it looked good in the box in the tools window, but then when I went up to the fill command and chose fill ( which was set at 100%). I filled the selection, but it was not the color I chose that is in box, it was a grayed and lightened version of the one that I chose. I checked the layers setting and the opacity and fill were at 100%, as was the fill setting. I can't figure out what is making it not fill in the color that is chosen in the tools color window. Does anyone on this forum have an idea of what might be happening and how to fix it?

  • Eye dropper tool and opacity

    Hi,
    I have a background set at 40% of C:9/M:6/Y:17/K:0.
I want the eye dropper tool to tell me what the CMYK breakdown of this TINT. It keeps telling me that it is C:9/M:6/Y:17/K:0 - but this is the breakdown of the 100% colour.
It did it correctly for me once and it does it for my colleague. I have checked my eyedropper settings against his and they are the same - everything checked.
From this one time that it worked I know that the CMYK breakdown of the tint is (rounded up) 4/2/7/0. But I can not replicate this result.
I have attached a screen grab showing my eyedropper settings as well as the BG tints.
    I am on Ilustrator CS3.
    I hope someone can help.
    Thanks

So.  You have a global swatch, that you apply to an object and drop down to a XX% tint and now you are looking for the actual CMYK breakdown of that tint, correct?
When you select your XX% tinted object and look at the color panel.  Looks like this, right?
When you go to the flyout menu and select cmyk from it, it should change to showing the CMYK breakdown.
This should work for global CMYK swatches as well as spot colors.

  • Eye Dropper Tool (Color Picker Tool) not working correctly - Premiere CC - Windows 8 - Multiple Displays

I'm running Windows 8, Premiere CC 2014 with two monitors. The eye dropper tool (color picker tool) isn't working correctly. It is selecting colors that are not the colors being hovered over. I've reasearched and see solutions to the problem when occurring with Mac, but do not see a solution for Windows. When I disconnect the second monitor, the eye dropper tool works correctly (as described by Mac users). I deleted any profiles for the montors that weren't the same, and still having the issue. I've also tried putting the source monitor on the second monitor, and tried sampling color from there... same result.

    Hello All,
Problem solved...I reset all tools in the Tool Preset window. Seems to be working.
    Hope this helps someone...
    Cheers!

  • Photoshop 7.0, hue/saturation command is connecting to eye dropper tool  HELP!

by using the short cut keys and the drop down menu for hue/saturation it connects to the eye dropper tool and locks up.  Hue/saturation window never opens.  Not sure what is going on.  Running PS7.0 on this computer Windows 7 with no problems for about a year until today.
Uninstalled and reinstalled the program twice today and still acting the same.  All other commands seem to be functioning properly.

For unexpected Photoshop problems, especially those not solved by a reinstall, the most usual advice is to clear Photoshop's preferences to defaults.  You can do this by pressing and holding Control - Shift - Alt immediately after cold-starting Photoshop.  If you get the keys down fast enough, it will prompt you to confirm deletion of the current preferences.

  • White lines after eye dropper tool?

Currently doing a project and I've been using the eye dropper tool and then filling in with the background colour and the white line that i used to create the shape goes, which is what I want to happen. However now all of a sudden, it is not going after I use the eye dropper tool, and its really ticking me off!
    Any help?

The only part of your description that I understand is that it involves the eyedropper and that you are severely irritated.
Using the eyedropper tool on what? Filling in what with what background color? What white line/what shape? The white line goes…where? Please tell us precisely what you have, what you are trying to accomplish, exactly what you have done to try to accomplish it, and what has happened instead of what you expected. And what OS and Illustrator version you are using. Perhaps a screenshot or two would help us to help you.

  • Eye dropper tool between documents

I have two open files in illustrator and I want to use the eye dropper tool to select a color from one document and use it in the other. Is there a way to do this?

    You don't.
Perhaps there is a plug in but I do not know of it.
Edit I am wrong You bring into focus the document you want to have the object change color and select it.
Then bring into focus the document with the object you wish to pick up the color from
then do not select that objectt but rather simply click with the eyedropper tool and drag the eye dropper tool on to the document that contains the object you wish to change color.
    That should do it
    I got it wrong again.
What you actually do is bring inot focu the document witht he object you want to change and selecct the object
then click the object with the eyedropper tool and hold the mouse down and drag iut to the document object with the color you want to bepicked up and that will do it.

  • Ultra Key problem. Eye Dropper tool not picking up color.

Hi. Has anyone had problems with the eye dropper tool in the chroma key filters?  When I use the dropper tool to pick up the color nothing happens. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Hi, thanks for your post.  Yes, I did find a solution but it's not going to make any sense to anyone. I was having problems also with other programs such as adobe bridge and Camera raw (the color was yellow). So, I, as it is my custom, did a back up of my harddrive as a system image (just in case my computer crashed) and all of a sudden all these problems got resolved! I know it sounds crazy but whatever took place internally solved it.  And trust me, I had tried all kinds of stuff before for not only Premier but also bridge and camera raw - nothing had worked.
So, I guess you could try that ( you have nothing to lose ).  I hope it works for you.

  • Why won't my eye dropper tool work?

    What I want to happen:
    1) select a path or text block with the direct path selector tool
    2) select eye dropper tool
    3) use eye dropper to apply appearance from a different path to selected path/text
When I try steps 1-3, this happens:
    4) the appearance shows up in the appearance panel as having been applied to the path/text in step 1 but the path itself doesn't change appearance.
    Things to note:
    1) I just switched from cs6 to creative cloud subscription
    2) I've already been on the phone with adobe for hours-on-end and they have been unable to help even after allowing them remote controlled access of my computer.
I'm really hoping someone else has ran into this issue and could lend some help because this process is very important to my workflow.  My productivity is dropping like crazy because of this.

How is the eye dropper tool set up?
Please show a screenshot: text object and appearance panel.

  • Eye dropper tool

I have applied the Glow with Zoom text behavior to a line of text and used the eye dropper to colour the glow parameter....all works well. I then duplicate the text layer and amend it. I wanted to keep the same glow colour but it defaults to the yellow colour it came with. If I use the eye dropper to change to desired colour nothing happens. I have tried to duplicate the whole layer and duplicate the sequence text behavior but nothing happens

I had noticed some problems with the eyedropper tool in Mo3 that were fixed in Mo4, but I didn't encounter this one. Can you drag the style from the one you like onto your new text?

  • Font style can not applied with the eye dropper ??!

I am working with font "not a free one" and it has a problem that I can not take its style with the eye dropper,
it only gives the same font name but the shape of font did not applied

It's necessary to know if the text is under Illustrators full control or if the other program interferes.
Also it's still not quite clear what exactly you are doing in which order.
Are you using character and paragraph styles?
Normally if you select words or paragraphs with Illustrators text tool, you can pick up styles from other texts with the eyedropper. So how exactly are you using the tools?

  • Eye dropper tool not working PS CS6

when I try to use the eye dropper it tells me it cannot be used because of a program issue. Anyone know how to fix this.
    Thanks,
    Trish Pittman

Have you tried resetting the tool by following 1, 2, 3?
    Quit and restarted Photoshop?
Did you see whether resetting Preferences had any effect?

  • Eye dropper tool not working! (color picker)

Okay, I am fairly new to photoshop, so maybe I am doing something wrong.  My eye dropper tool is not working at all.
Say I want to select the color of someone's face.  I click my eye dropper, then click somewhere on the subject's face.  My foreground and background colors both become white (when one was previously black).  I click on a green shirt... both are still white.  I click something black... both are still white.  Am I going about color picking wrong?  I have tried the sample size as point sample, 3X3 and 5X5.  No luck.
    How do you color pick?

Make sure you are selecting the right tool. It's in the Draw section of tools. Please donot confuse it with Red eye removal tool.
Try resetting the Editor's preferences. To do it, close Editor. Open Welcome Screen. Before clicking to launch Editor, press Ctrl+ Alt+Shift and then launch Editor. It will open a dialog box. Click Yes. See if this helps.
