Gradients on Text

Howza bout allowing gradients on text without outlining it first?
Seems like that should be standard.
Also, how about some inner glow effect?

Markocheese - I agree with you. Ai is the king of clicking and thinking this must be changed because the frustration is growing.  Gradient should also automatically use the Foreground and background colors if you have not chosen a set of swatches. It also seems to be completely incomprehensible to engineers Ai. Intuitive in terms of job Ai not evolved as much as one year from its first version.  The idea of pallets Appearance it seems to me crucial and far-ordering control over promises.
Understand however, how could such a mess and it is not fine-tune utility. But I do not understand how it could break and so do not refined the usefulness of the graphics work.
- Number of clicking is the worst
- lack of transfer function to copy and drag each other obikety Appearance is the pinnacle of laziness etc.
Sometimes I think that the only graphic designer who uses Ai am I alone
P.S.
None gradients of this outline is the most annoying! (Because giving a gradient fill to text using the Appearance can do with pain and not intuitive)

  • Apply gradient to text, cs5 like Classroom in a Book

I need to create a title in a document, a single word heading at the top.  I'm using Win7 32 bit and AI cs5 and the book, Classroom in a Book.
I'm on page 310 where "Mike's Coffee" is the tutorial text.  I've converted my text to path outlines, then Grouped the characters.  From there, however, the script (or I) seem to get lost.  Step 4 says "This applies a white to black gradient".  Yes, it does.
However, I want to start with bright red, receding to nearly transparent and I can't follow the instruction from there -- getting colors into my panel.  No, I've not loaded that lesson and perhaps that's why my panel and swatch doesn't match the book's.
Am I going to have to load this lesson, start from scratch on it to simply apply a gradient to a single word?

You're right.  Let me start over.
I need apply a gradient to text using Win7 32 bit and AI cs5.  I want to start with a bright red at the top, receding to nearly transparent at the bottom.
I've converted my text to path outlines, then Grouped the characters.  From there, selected the group, clicked on the Gradient box on the right -- then I'm lost.

  • Black boxes appear on printing of gradients with text overlay

I am teaching a class of 25 students who are just learning InDesign. About half of them decided to put a black to white gradient as their background and then they put text over that. The text has effects applied and when these students print, the gradient prints as a shade of brown AND the "box" the original shape was in shows up as a black box. This only seems to be happening if they've applied an effect to the text [like an inner glow, etc.
How do we "turn off" that black box that shouldn't be there.
    Very frustrated teacher and students...

When you print out of InDesign transparency has to get flattened, so the Transparency Flattener preset you choose in the Print dialog's Advanced tab can have an effect on output. Try using the High Resolution preset and if that doesn't work make a preset with Raster/Vector Balance set to 0:
If the Black in the gradient is set as CMYK 0|0|0|100, set your Appearance of Blacks Preference to Output All Blacks as Rich Blacks

  • Gradient and text, changes when copied

Hi, this is a CS3 document, exported in IDML for CS4.
The price has no transparency, no other effects.
When copied, the value stays the same but the visual changes. Any ideas?
This thing happen in CS5 also but not in CS3.
    Thanks
EDIT: if i change the first to -89 and then to -90, doesn't work. If i copy the third (that is now visually correct), the gradient stay normal.

It looks like InDesign has repositioned the gradient within the text. Think of a gradient without the text masking it, as a rectangle that fades from yellow to green. With the Gradient tool you can click and drag to define the angle and size of that rectangle. The text then masks the rectangle so only the part within the text shows. I think InDesign did not reposition the text and the gradient properly when you pasted. You can highlight the text, then switch to the Gradient tool and drag to reposition the gradient. Unfortunately there is no way to make this part of a character style or paragraph style.

  • How do you add a gradient to text in PSE 11?

I'm trying to make some text have a gradient color. I write the text, simplify it and then use the gradient tool normally, however, it's applying the gradient to the entire layer instead of just the text. Does anyone know what's going on or what I'm doing wrong? I searched the adobe support for how to add the gradient and followed the insturctions but it's still not working. Any help is appreciated!

Your layers panel should look like this afterwards:

  • How do you apply a gradient to text?

In CS5, I open my gradient tool, though it does not apply to the text.
    What do you do?
    Thanks.

    web.boards,
What is this technically doing to the text? What other types of things can be done after this is applied?
What it says: adds a new fill that may be changed independently, and quite a few things can be done.
Just to see a few, you may try this:
    1) Create the Live Type;
    2) In the Color palette/panel change to 100% M, 0% K;
    now you have changed the solid colour of the Type itself, without needing a new fill;
    3) Appearance flyout>Add New Fill, in the Toolbox click Gradient instead of Color and change the values to 100% M and 100% Y, and then Effect>Warp>Upper Arc;
Now you may shudder at the sight of an arc with a Magenta>Yellow gradient on top of a Magenta plain Type partially visible underneath.
You may also create some nice things, and you can just start trying out what works.
The proof of the pudding is the eating.

  • Why does applying a gradient to text turn it black, but the text accepted the gradient fill?

This seems utterly illogical.  The text now has the gradient fill in its fill slot.  But it's black.
    Thoughts?
    Reasoning?

You cannot apply a gradient to individual characters, hence at the character level if you started with green type, applied a gradient, your type would turn black (no matter what the original color was) and would not show a gradient.
You would preferably delete that fill (to keep your postscript clean), and then click on "Type No Appearance" . Thsi taeks you to the object level of Type, and apply your gradient here.

  • Indesign Loses Text Gradient After Export To PDF SWF

I have some Indesign files from a client and everytime I export from indesign to pdf and then convert to a swf, it removes the text gradient and adds black instead. Images attached for reference.
    <---PDF
    <---SWF
I've tried numerous export options. Is there something in particular that I'm supposed to be flattening?
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks!

Hi DesPro_7, Thank you! Your answer was very helpful, and it seems to solve one of my problems, which is the same as what Franklinsdictionary describes.
I have a design using gradients in text, including a gradient effect on a rule below, used as a banner behind my text. I'm losing the gradient when the PDF is converted to SWF, and while we're working on a way to export to SWF directly from InDesign, our current workflow is cropping and optimizing a printer PDF to convert to SWF.
Before InDesign CS5, we had little trouble with transparencies, but this became an issue on our projects using CS5 or above.
Part of the optimizing process includes flattening transparencies, but text with gradients doesn't seem to flatten, nor do my banners created using rule below behind the text.
Any idea why this seems to be an issue with text? Any insight might help!

  • Gradient options when applying to text

I am applying a gradient to text, and I am adjusting the gradient using the bar that is over the text. I have two stops with different colors, though there is also a small white square on the middle top that i can drag. What is this for?
    Thanks.

    Hi Stan:
You'll notice that the square (it's rotated 45° so it's more like a diamond) above the gradient moves as you move the colors on either end.  This is basically the 50% point between the colors.  If you add more colors to your gradient, you'll get more 'diamonds' above the gradient.  Play with the adjustments and see how they work when you have some time; clock the radial box in the Gradient Menu, scroll down to the "Desert Sunset" or "Copper Radial" gradients to see how multiple colors can work - and have fun!

  • Stroke showing on text, even when disabled?

    This is very odd.
I have done this a thousand times, and not had a problem. Basically I tried putting a gradient into text, and nothing happened. I tried it on a shape, and it worked fine. So I went to the appearances panel and added a new fill for the text. It worked, but even with the stroke disabled, there is still a weird glitchy outline around the text???
I tried exporting the file as  PDF to check if this is just showing up in program...but it shows up in the outputted PDF too!!!
Anyone have any idea what is going on??? Please see the screenshot attached. Thanks for your help. PS you will need to click the image to enlarge it to see what's going on.

Thanks both of you. This worked.
However, now whenever I add a gradient to text I have to always do it by going to the appearance panel and adding a new fill there to get the gradient to show up at all. Simply selecting the gradient button with the text selected, or selecting a preset gradient from swatches now does nothing, the text remains black.
I then, as you suggested, have to double click 'characters' and remove the solid colour fill.
    Kindof odd?
Thanks again for your help though

Gradient Overlay in Photoshop Elements 8? On the school laptop it has Photoshop elements 8

    http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-612453/tutorialsipanda-/?pg=0
But every time I do gradient it does the background not the text.
How do I use Gradient overlay on the text?
GoPDA Windows Mobile(Windows Phone) iPhone Android Tips

Edit: I was unable to view the text example you linked.
One way you can do this is to use a clipping mask:
Here is a video which shows how to apply a gradient to text using a clipping mask:
    http://www.pxleyes.com/video-tutorial/photoshop-elements/10901/Versatile-Gradient-Text.htm l
Above video is for PSE 6 but the method is the same. She might call it a clipping group instead of clipping group. (Clipping group = clipping mask; Adobe changed the name not the function.)
Note: Hold in the shift key as you pull the gradient to constrain the gradient so it pulls evenly.

  • Applying GradientPaint to logo text in an Applet

    Hello everyone!
I'm trying to come up with a pleasing text appearance in an applet's logo title I'm working on. I'm wondering if there's an easy way to apply a gradient to text (with a larger font, of course). And while I'm at it, does anyone have any interesting appearance ideas to apply to text for something like my current project. Thanks!

  • Gradient

As I see it the Gradient Map (GM) and the Gradient Tool (GT) serve two different functions.  The GM allows either the colorization of black and White images based on iluminationor or the conversion of a color image to a B&W image.  The GT allows the creation of a mask that works similar to the Graduated Neutral filter.
I am no expert but I think I understand the GM and the Gradient Editor.
The GT can be accessed via the Tool Gradient or the layer/New Adjustemnt/Gradient.  If (as an example) I create a curve dialog (layer/New Adjustment/Curve) and then click on OK, I have an empty layer mask.  When I click on the GT in the tool bar the curve layer mask is filled with the gradient tool based on the gradient  and area selected.  When I adjust the curve, only the white portion of the layer mask is affected by the action of the curve.  This effectively gives me the action of the Split ND filter.  As the masking is in the curve layer, only the curve modifications are affected.
When using the GT, it seems that the only Gradient swatch that should be selected in the gradient picker is the foreground to transparency or B&W.  I have no idea how the colors would be used with the GT.
I have no idea how the GT works when accessed via the layer/new adjustment/Gradient.
I have tried to locate where I can get some answers to my questions, but have been unable to locate a source.
If anyone can point me to where I can get my answerw or explain how/why colors can be used with the GT or how to use the tool in the layer/adjustment/gradient, it would be appricated.

Zeno Thanks for your answer.  It lead me to more investigation.  I suspect that my question was too broad.
Your links pointed me to the C4 online manual.  As I am using CS3 I went looking for the CS3 manual.  Both the CS3 & CS4 user manuals can be downloaded in PDF format or viewed on line  Following is the online and PDF links:

    http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/Photoshop/10.0

In the more like section off to the rignt side I found the following link to a site which talke about using Gradients on text which I found helpful
    http://www.adobetutorialz.com/articles/65/1/Graffiti-Text
The CS3 and CS4 manuals are more for referance than tutorial.  I found the Graffiti-Text to be helpfull as a tutoral.
If anyone knows of the links to Gradient tutorals, they would be appriciated.

And another way is to simply create a normal blend from 2 rectangles, with your choice of start and end colors from your swatches. The same ones you used in your gradient. This creates a color ramp with as many complimentary blends as you need. In my illustration I used 25.
Now, choose Menu -> Object -> Expand, say OK to the dialog. You can now use the Eyedropper tool to select the colors you would like to add to your swatches. Move the blend outside of the Artboard for future use, or delete it when finished.
TIP:  if you want only a certain subset of colors, ungroup the blend after expanding it, choose the colors you want (or all), and then in the swatches pallette, from the top right drop down menu, choose "Add Selected Colors".
Menu -> Object -> Blend Options: choose your steps, then choose Menu -> Object -> Blend -> Make, or Cmd-Alt-B/Ctr-Alt-B
SORRY -- The graphic should say "25 Steps"... I changed it, which you can too, by going back to the Blend Options dialog. Check Preview to see what you're doing, and actually fit the blend directly under your chosen dot over the "i".
