Gradual failure of wireless connectivity in Windows XP on T61 ThinkPad

My computer has gradually been getting worse about connecting to wireless internet, and now it seems to have completely stopped.  Perhaps it is a hardware issue and the wireless card has just become broken, but I don't know how to check whether that's the case.  I don't know whether these are typical symptoms, and I don't know the correct terminology to search the internet for, because for everyone else asking about similar things it seems to be correlated with some change in software, whereas mine just seems spontaneous.
The computer is a Lenovo T61 Thinkpad from 2008, running Windows XP SP2.
Until the past couple of days, the computer would usually connect to the internet fine, but sometimes (and in some physical locations almost all the time; this started a few months ago, but was primarily associated with one physical location until a few weeks ago) the green wifi indicator light icon thing right below the screen would be off.  When that happened, sometimes restarting the computer would fix it, but probably not most of the time.  Sometimes I could right-click the wireless-icon in the system tray (a little computer monitor with green waves coming out of it) and click "Repair", and that would fix it maybe half the time (though sometimes it would take a few tries).  When I would click "Repair", it would go through the "disabling wireless network adapter", "enabling wireless network adapter" (at which point the wifi indicator light almost always would turn on), "connecting to the wireless network", "renewing your IP address" (at this point the indicator light would sometimes turn off again; if it didn't turn off, then the connection would work, but often only for a few seconds or a few minutes before breaking again), "clearing the [DNS?] cache", and "registering with the DNS".  Then it would say that it had repaired the connection, it would show that it was connected to the network, but (if the indicator-light had turned off) the system-tray icon would not be flashing back and forth between blue and gray, it would just stay gray.  When I right-clicked on the system-tray icon and clicked "View Available Wireless Networks", it would show all the networks, and label the one I'm connected to as "Connected", but there wasn't any network traffic, web pages wouldn't load, email program said it failed to connect, etc.  If I tried to connect to a different network, it would say that the network was no longer available and I should refresh the network list, but refreshing the list didn't change anything.
Occasionally the wireless-icon in the system tray would be completely absent.  In those cases, sometimes I could go to Control Panel -> Network Connections and there would be an icon for the wireless connection, and when I would double-click that, it would say "Enabling ..." and then "Connection Failed!" (this method was never able to enable it).  Other times, the wireless connection isn't even listed there.
Anyway, as of yesterday, the indicator light never turns on, and as of today, the system-tray icon and the "wireless connection" listing under Network Connections are also gone.  The wireless adapter is also not listed in the Device Manager (I don't know whether it was before, I didn't check).
I called Lenovo tech support, and they said they weren't allowed to give me specific help because the computer isn't under warranty anymore, but they said it was likely a hardware issue.  They advised running the ThinkVantage System Update as a first step, which I did, and that had no effect.
So, should I just buy a new wireless card, or is there something else I should try first?

Hello,
I wonder if the ThinkPad T61 downloaded any updates while it was on the wired network?  If so, perhaps one of them was a device driver update for the wireless network card.

yes that is what I mean. And you cannot figure out if this is happening or not. Don't rely on the wireless connection icon on windows.
It can be possible that your wireless adapters notices that the RF is busy and there were a few packet drops so it reconnects quickly. It's usually transparent to applications but if you are running a ping at that time ...
In any case, conclusion is : check your RF environment. How many APs around ? a lot of traffic ?

  • Wireless mouse and keyboard Windows 7

I successfully installed Windows 7 (32 bit) on Apple boot camp (3.2) of my iMac 24.
Everything is working perfectly, except my wireless Magic mouse and wireless keyboard.
I found 2 Bluetooth adapters (Generic Bluetooth adapter and Microsoft Bluetooth-enumerator).
The mouse and keyboard are found but won't install!
    What am I doing wrong?

Try to use this guide to install your keyboard and mouse (mouse is the same as keyboard)

  • Total Failure of CC 2014 Apps on Windows 7

Total Failure of CC 2014 Apps on Windows 7
Yesterday (Thursday16 Oct 2014) I had one of those tech issues that stretch the imagination and patience of a customer. After using CC for the past two years, and generally very happy with the response and resources, I updated all my app to the CC 2014 releases.
I expect a few bugs (which are usually corrected quickly) but not a total failure.  In my case InDesign would open, but lock up. It could not be accessed or terminated without using the Task Manager.  Illustrator would open and run, but could not be terminated without the task manager. Photoshop worked, I didn't try the remainder of the apps.
I started at 10am trying to figure it out. I deleted all the preferences, cleared CC preferences, reset VRAM, all the usual steps.
At 11a I called tech support and that started what ended up being a four hour cycle of two tech support calls with remote access which produced zero results and plus my time of more than 4 hours uninstalling/reinstalling first the CC2014 apps and then finally uninstalling all CC2014 apps and re-installing the CC apps (but that's the end of the story).
Both tech support personnel were polite. But they took me through and agonizingly long stretch of nothing. It was like a four hour Seinfeld episode.
Before I continue understand that I have, by design, a totally generic machine. It is Win7 64B, 8GB of ram, NVIDIA Video, 4TB of high speed disk drives and standard software. I have GB Ethernet, and Comcast commercial service with 50/15, almost zero latency. The only semi-intrusive component is MS's Security Essentials. All drivers are up to date with the latest or latest stable versions.
Also note that I have been using Adobe products on Mac and PC since 1995 and I have never had an experience like this with any product.
    Solutions offered and explored were:
    * Increase VRAM to 4x physical RAM
    * Make Acrobat the default printer
    * Ask if I am on a domain controller
    * An a dozen other relatively useless options.
There was a lot of random setting, disabling services, etc. All for nothing. And all the solutions offered were generally irrelevant. Any software that has otherwise worked perfectly for years, that suddenly requires me to uninstall WACOM, uninstall printers, disable services, change network configurations, etc. should be ignored and other options found.
Finally, I told them to stop. I had already lost more than $1500 in billing and I am now two days behind in work. I then uninstalled all the CC2014 apps and re- installed all the CC apps which to no surprise work perfectly.
This is totally unacceptable for a company like Adobe. There is something wrong with the release and I could not get the support personnel to say, "Wow. We better get on this right now." I finally told them I couldn't afford to let them use me to debug their mistakes.
I fear that companies like Adobe, and Apple, and Microsoft are enamored with the speed of online software releases and are getting very sloppy indeed in testing. When they had to burn a million CD installs it seems they were much more careful.
So Adobe, what do I do now?  Your mistake has cost me more than the equivalent of two years subscription to CC in just one day. In 24 hours you've effectively doubled my subscription cost (actually quadrupled because I now have to the work and make up the same hours in overtime).
    What do I want? Simple...
    1. I want Adobe to credit me one year of my CC subscription.
    2. I want Adobe to commit to testing as thoroughly as they used to.
    3. I want Adobe to fix the CC2014 apps
    4. I want to know I can have confidence in future installs.
    5. Take away the horrid opening screen on Illustrator CC2014 or let us choose our own images.

Have you received any feedback regarding this issue and reasonable resolution?
InDesign CC 2014 is proving to be a mess for me. It will work for a while, then it won't. I can only use the task manager to close the file. I've followed all of the suggestions for disabling, resetting, preferences, settings, etc. I continue to have horribly slow performance, or no performance at all.
Interestingly, I now have an issue with fonts. Fonts installed on my computer work great in one file. In another file, the exact same fonts, with the exact same paragraph and character settings can't be found for some reason. When I attempt to replace the font a prompt displays that the font can't be found. It can be found in another file, very perplexing.
So far today, I've spent three hours trying to make a file change that should have taken me 15 minutes at the longest.
What is going on with this version? This is a ridiculous way to do business. What happened to trouble shooting and caring about the end product? This is frustrating and my confidence in Adobe has been depleted. The company I work for was looking to upgrade to Adobe CC for all 65 marketing and graphics personnel, I can't recommend that now.
Any new information on how to deal with these issues would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
    should be no problem.
Best case is you can activate online via Internet.
Worst case is you have to call Microsoft and explain that it is the same computer after a mainboard failure.

  • Hp v40 on xp desktop and is shared via wireless network. laptop with windows 7 wont print on v40.

Can't print from laptop (windows 7) via wireless router .to desktop (windows xp) with usb attached HP v40 all in one.
    Laptop (7) ----- wireless router ----- desktop (xp) - -usb-- HPv40
Worked when laptop was running xp.
Laptop spools print job to desktop and seemingly completes, but the desktop simply ignores the print job.
    No error messages.
printing from the desktop work just fine.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I am reporting this as solved. I submitted this problem. The problem started when updated my laptop from Windows XP to Windows 7. When I did, The Lexmark printer on my desktop worked find with the new laptop system. The HP V40 did not work. The Desktop simply received each print job submitted from the Laptop (via a wireless local network) and discarded it. I could see the print job come into the V40 print queue and could see it disappear.
Here is what I did to solve the problem:
I tried a dozen or so combinations of removing and installing the printer on both my Windows 7 laptop and my Windowx XP desktop (with the V40 attached via USB), and manually removing and installing print drivers on my desktop  PC, it finally works. What did I do? I have no idea, but I believe that manually removing the v40 drivers on the desktop was part of the solution. While viewing the available printers on my XP desktop, I clicked on File and one of the tabs led me to a place where I could remove drivers for each printer ( I just removed the ones for the V40).
Here is what I DID NOT DO:
I did not follow the advice of the HP support person that I contacted via the telephone. That advice was to reinstall Windows XP on my desktop. That clearly was not the problem when I spoke to him. But he would NOT listen to reason. Thankfully, I have enough PC knowledge to know that his advice bas bogus
I am pleased with the resulting availablilty of the V40 again.
I have no idea how to officially close this problem.
I would be happy to discuss this with anyone else who has a similar problem, but when I submitted this problem with my name and email address, the moderator removed my problem submission. Hence, I think anyone who wants to know more is out of luck.

  • T60 WLAN COMPLETELY GONE after installing latest Update Intel Wireless WiFi Link for Windows XP

I just reinstalled a T60 from scratch TWICE  to the point of updating  - Intel Wireless Wifi Link for Windows XP -
Just after that very latest Update (3.1.1.1 or so?)  there is no WLAN possible and I had to find out, that  a system restore is impossible either! (Simply does not work and asks me to get another point and try again)
I have a full backup done by acronis 2010 so that does not bother me so very much.
The point is that I like to WARN everybody to install that Update to their T60  e.g. 2008YWJ !!!
    (contains 3945AGB WLAN Module!)
After Updating U HAVE NO CHANCE TO REPAIR IT! U get always the problem signature
    szAppName: AcSvc.exe  szAppVer: 5.6.1.33  szModName: PfMgrApi.dll
    szModVer : 13.0.0.2  offset: 000d4912
and the System wants to report that stuff to MicroSoft...again and again...every time u
    start AccessConnections.
U can DEinstall AccessConnections and Intel Wireless Wifi Link for XP completely, reboot
and REinstall it....just 2 get the same messages and NO WLAN anymore.
I could not get out of this Driver Installation Hell until I did a complete Recovery Install and
I got back to Hell when System Update REinstalled Intel Wireless WiFi Link for XP
    automagically...;-(((
And again NO CHANCE to roll back, No chance to get rid of that annoying bug. This time I have an ACRONIS-Image so I can spare some time....
Somebody shoud really CHECK this, because it should not be possible to break down an completely NICE RUNNING Thinkpad THIS WAY just by updating it! As it took me abaout 12 Hours of Administration by now I
really would apreciate to help whomever to find out what the hell is responsible 4 this !!!
Why is XP System Restore not working on an T60 to roll back to Point b4 installation of this Update???
(I could  not use that Thinkvantage-System Recovery because it did not even get all its updates by the
time the system went in limbo during install! What i defintely can say is that it breaks at exactely
same point when Intel Wifi Updates is installed...
I do my Acronis Restore now and try 2 avoid this Update....;-(
if anybody KNOWS how to get that system 2 an earlier point of an install orgy i whould be thankful to get that information...
    I am keeping alive 12 Thinkpads here R40 R50 T42 T43 T60 T61p T400 T500 and  NEVER
experienced problems like this in many  years!
    cheers

    gal9000, welcome to the forum,
have you tried running windows system restore from safe mode? It usually works then because some anti-virus softwares will prevent it from running successfully from "normal" windows.
    Hope this helps.

  • Windows 10 planned for Thinkpad Tablet 8 products?

Can somebody close to Lenovo tell us, if Lenovo is planning to extend drivers and support for Windows 10 to our Thinkpad Tablet 8 products?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Obviously. Microsoft is responsible for delivering us the Win 10 update, and they said they would do it for free within the first year of availability to any and all Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 devices. Hence it would only be appropriate that Lenovo would eventually bring Win 10 support to its existing products as well, in addition to their new lines of products preloaded with Win 10. We still have several months to go, so be patient...

Done initial boot/setup while connected via Ethernet cable. Installed other AV, other productivity suite, etc. apps, and installed all Microsoft Updates. Then switched to WLAN, and disaster striked.
WLAN stays connected for few seconds and then stops on its own. Icon on the taskbar reports "No connections are available" [I have another HP nc8430 next to it connecting on the same router wih no issues]. Running troubleshooting resets the adapter which then fails again on its own after few seconds to few minutes I can see EventID 4001 WLAN AutoConfig service has successfully stopped.
After few troubleshooting iterations, troubleshooter hangs with an unexpected error. I have verified this multiple times with the system either doing installs or sitting idle.
Decided to do a recovery [F8 on boot] and started all over again on a clean slate. Experience: Identical

  • Cannot download Solution Center for Off Jet 6500 Wireless since going to Windows 8.1

I get a failure message and am unable to download HP full feature software (a.k.a. the "solution center") for my HP Officejet 6500 Wireless on my Aspire E1-571-688 Laptop.   The solution center was successfully downloaded when I got the laptop in August 2013.  It was running fine until I upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1.
When I discovered that the solution center would not run, I removed the printer and driver software beofre trying to reinstall.  When trying to get the Solution Center back, I can't get past the download step because during download it "fails".  I was able to download "drivers only" through the "add a printer" option, and I do have printing capability, however I am unable to use the scan function from the laptop (or directly from the 6500).
Weird that I can't get the scan function to work on the unit itself (I get the "no scan options" message when trying to do so) as I have confirmed mutliple times that the printer is successfully connected to the correct network.
    Help please!  Thank you
    Geo48

    Geo,
    Welcome to the HP Forum.
You will not have access to the full features of the printer software until you manage to install the Full Feature Software.  Scanning is one of those functions.
The initial Connection to the Internet is indeed part of it -- you need a reliable, clean, consistant connection that will allow you to download the full data file.  Your connection may be dropping out part way through.
You may need to upgrade your network drivers after the Upgrade to Windows 8.1 .  There are other issues can can plague a system after the Upgrade, most are well documented at this point.  You can check with your system's Forum to what others are saying.
Basic Drivers only are much smaller in size -- just a few MBs.
    Random Thoughts..
You need to resolve the network issues so you can download the full software.
You might have a friend download the file onto his computer and transfer the file to your system using a USB stick.  This does not fix your network problems but it does solve at least the issue of not being able to get a hold of the installation package.
You might try taking the computer to a friend's house -- if the issue is not within your computer's network setup, then the Upgrade may have "upset" the relationship between the computer and your home network.
Click the Kudos Thumbs-Up to say Thank You for the help." .
Although I strive to reflect HP's best practices, I do not work for HP.
    Kind Regards,

    Hi,
You can refer to this blog, and try to roll back to the older version of network adapter driver to check the results.
Windows 8.1 Wifi showing "limited" or "No Internet Access"

Meanwhile, please check with the manufacturer of your router to update the firmware.
If the issue persists, please help to collect following information for further research:

  • WRT54G Wireless Router - cannot map Windows 7 pc to a Western Digital sharespace drive

I have a WRT54G Wireless Router.  I recently connected a Western Digital Sharespace external storage drive to the router using an ethernet cable.  Initially, I was able to map to the Sharespace device shares and create backup plans.  After a few months, I lost the drive connections (possibly during a power failure) and since then, have not been able to map to the drives again.  I can ping the Sharespace device and I can see the device in the router configuration screens. I have another computer on the same network, running XP, that is functioning perfectly.   I am wondering if I have a problem because my laptop is on Windows7 and this is a fairly old and unsupported router.  Should I change to a newer router?

If you are able to ping the drive then your computer is communicating with the drive and your router is working fine.
Also your another computer is just working fine. I think this must be the issue with the settings on Windows 7 computer.

  • Intel 4000 graphics failure both windows and linux on thinkpad edge s430

After 5-30 minutes the screen breaks up in flickering (or just black) and system freezes. I need to turn off computer. After restart the error occurs again quickly.
This occurs regardless if I boot to windows or into a linux bootable dvd.
    But
Remote desktop connection to the computer and it works fine for days .
    ->
Thus I believe it is the intel 4000 graphics that has some hardware failure which is not invoked upon remote desktop.
I wonder if this is a known issue?
I wonder if only a replacement of the intel 4000 graphics will fix this (this probably means replacing the main board entirely?)
    Or
If it is in any way likely that it is _only_ because maybe thermal paste between cooler and cpu/graphics is slipping?
    Lenovo Thinkpad Edge S430
    Intel I7 + Intel HD 4000
    No additional graphics

Have you tried setting up the connection manually?
    e.g.
    /etc/init.d/networkmanager stop
    #Unlock wireless devices
    rfkill unblock all
    #enable interface
    ifconfig wlan0 up
    #check network visibility
    iwlist wlan0 scanning
    #configure wifi
    iwconfig wlan0 essid <ESSID>
    iwconfig tx auto
and then set up wpa_supplicant in case you use WPA2!
    #Get ip address
    dhclient wlan0
One thing I regularly miss when getting a new wifi device is to add it to the MAC filter list of my router, so check if the MAC address is added there...
