"Graduated Filter" tool in Aperture 3?

I have been using Lightroom 2.7 for the past time, but want to give Aperture 3 a chance as well. My favorite and often used feature in Lightroom is the "graduated filter" tool that allows me to reduce the exposure selectively and in a graduated manner in blown out skies and other areas that are overexposed.
In Aperture 3, I didn't find a similar tool. How do you deal with overexposed areas in your RAW images in Aperture 3? Is there such a thing like a "graduated filter" tool or are there other ways to selectively (and "quickly & dirtily") correct exposure in selected areas of your image?
Thanks for any hints - this is the killer feature in Lightroom that is crucial for me.

There are a few options which may provide you with satisfactory results. As mentioned you can Brush in effects to lighten or darken wherever you brush for example using the Dodge or Burn adjustments as appropriate. You may also get good results using the Exposure brick, specifically with the Recovery or *Black Point* sliders. Also the *Highlights & Shadows* brick may do the trick with the Advanced settings allowing you to only alter high tone, low tone or mid contrast ranges that you can define. Curves can also do magic in this area and may take some playing with but has the potential to be your new favourite ‘must have’ tool!

  • Adjustment Brush Tool or Graduated Filter Tool in Camera Raw for Photoshop Elements 12?

Is there an Adjustment Tool or Graduated Filter Tool in Camera Raw for Photoshop Elements 12?

Those are Lightroom tools for those who don't want to use a regular pixel editor like Photoshop or Elements which have much more powerful tools to do that.
The idea with the reduced set of feature in the ACR version of Elements is that features available in Elements are not necessary in ACR. You need to use the Elements editor more frequently than if you are working with Lightroom.

  • Lightroom 4 Graduated Filter tool

How do you change from compact mode to expanded mode in Graduated filter tool in Lightroom 4?

What do you mean by Compact mode?
    - When you select the graduated filter, the menu expands. When you deselect the Graduated filter the menu rolls up.

  • Radial filter tool in Camera Raw 8.3 does not show

If have updated Camera Raw and do not see the Radial Filter tool in the toolbar next to the Graduated filter tool. Does anybody know what is wrong here?

Are you using CS6?  The Radial Filter only comes with CC.  You will continue to be able to add ACR updates to CS6, but only with additional camera support, and not the added features that come with CC.
If you wanted to use the Radial Filter to produce vignette, check out the Post Crop vignetting in the FX tab.  It produces a wonderfully smooth gradient with lots of control.

  • Lost my Pin Marker & Parellel lines in Graduated Filter-HELP!

I'm a bit new to Lightroom and have suddenly lost the Pin marker icon and Parellel lines in the Graduated Filter tool.
What I have in it's place is a "cross" icon and no parellel lines...however it does perform the function but with little contro.
    What do I do?

    That was it!
Thankyou so much, I thought I was going crazy and would have to reinstal it.

  • Gradauated filter tool lines missing

I am using Lightroom 2.3. I have just noticed that the 3 lines associated with the graduated filter tool (the ones that show the start, mid-point and end of the graduation) have disappeared. However the graduation effect (exposure, saturation etc) can be seen, but without the lines.
Would appreciate any help in correction this problem.
    Thanks

Thanks Robtes. Problem solved, and am a wiser man today.

  • Lightroom 5 Graduated filter will not work from the centre out

    Hi
I am running Lightroom 5.6 but I think this has always been the same. The Graduated filter in the Basic Development module only seems to work from the edges inward (from top/bottom or sides). I would like to create a filter across the centre (for a lake) but I can figure how to do this. I guess the only way is to use the new Radial filter is that correct (I would prefer to use the Grad filter).

To create the equivalent of a Graduated filter with the effect starting at the center you can drag the radial filter endpoint to stretch it off-screen. Use the hand tool to push the radial filter off-screen and then drag the endpoint out further. You may need to do this a few times. You can also use two Graduated filters back to back, which gives you the ability to apply a centered Exposure correction and adjustments for Highlights and Shadows correction that are different on each side.

  • Graduated filter and Adjustment brush always use "last used effect"

In my workfow I mostly use opposite effects in the Graduated filter and Adjustment brush.
Lightroom maintains "least used effect" even when changing tools.
Is it possible that each tool retains its last used effect?
In my workflow I mostly use opposite effects when using Adjustment brush en gradient filter. Changing the effects wastes a lot of time when editing hundreds of images.

I agree that it would be nice if the individual tools remembered their own last used preset.
Unfortunately LR does not work that way.

  • Highlight loss when using adjustment brush & graduated filter.

    Hi
    I'm using Lightroom 2.2 on a Mac.
Is anyone else having the same problem? :
When using the graduated filter or adjustment brush on an image it seems to cause some of the top end highlights to burnout, which is rather frustrating as it is usually when I am trying to rein them in a little.
It seems to happen automatically even when not working directly on those areas and I cannot pull them back with the localised adjustment tools themselves.
Any thoughts would be most welcome.
    Thanks
    Graham

    Hi Eric
    Thanks for your reply
I've had another look at it... whenever I have a negative exposure setting on the brush or gradient and apply it anywhere in the image it seems to affect the top end highlights throughout the image even if they haven't been clicked on.
It's just a small change but it is frustrating to lose highlight detail when you've worked hard to capture it in camera!
Look forward to hearing from you.

  • Graduated filter - remember last settings?

When I use the graduated filter on a picture I adjust highlights, exposure etc, and then go to another picture.  Then if I choose radial tool, the settings from the last pic's graduated filter are there!  If I change the settings on the adjustment brush and go to another picture and choose graduated filter, the settings are from the adjustment brush.
How do I force lightroom to remember the last settings for each of the filters ( radial tool and the adjustment brush, graduated filter) and not contaminate the other two?
    I hope I am clear.

    Yes.
Click and hold the two small vertical bars bottom of each column while holding down the Option key and drag either way to desired width.
Close the Finder window then re open it.

  • The graduated filter in my Lightroom 4 is not working properly.

When I highlight the area I want to change and start making adjustments (and the black dot is in the circle), the whole photo changes. I have used this tool successfully many times in the past and don't understand why it stopped working. Ideas?

The black dot is in the circle that shows where the graduation filter is being used. When I use any of the sliders to change what I highlighted with the graduated filter, it changes the whole photo, not just what I selected.

  • Graduated filter substitute?

    Hi,
I'm far away from being a professional photographer but I do enjoy landscape photography. I've been playing around with Lightroom 3 and I love what I can do with my pictures in there. My big problem is that I also love Apple products and all the syncing that comes with it. I really want to move over to Aperture but I can't find a decent substitute for the graduated filter that Lightroom 3 has. I've tried the Brushes (dodge and burn) but they leave me with edges. It ends up looking bad. I've tried experimenting with the exposure but that changes the whole picture, not the sky or the ground (which is mostly what I want to adjust in my pictures). I've also played around a bit with highlights and shadows but, as with exposure, it's the whole picture that is being altered.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks so much
    Sophie

    Also useful:
Put down brushstrokes at different strengths.  Use "color overlay" to see.  Feather between strokes as well as between stroke and non-stroke.  Note that Feather is also strength-settable (afaict).
Brushes are stupendously variable.  I find them the least well-used and understood aspect of Aperture.
For the quick'n'dirty GND filter, use the Polarize Quick Brush, turn off "Detect Edges", set size to whatever is one-fourth the distance from horizon to top of Image, set softness to c. 0.3 and Strength to 1.0 and draw a swath across the top of the Image.  Change strength to 0.9 and come back the other way with swath #2 just below the first.  Repeat at 0.8 and 0.7.  Set Strength back to 1.0 and Feather the three in-between edges, and the fourth (lowest) edge as needed.
Note that "Detect Edges" works as an Eraser as well.  It is often easier (IME) to erase to the edge of a form as it is to fill outside the form to the edge (the rule of thumb is simple: detect edges from the side of the edge with the least tonal variation).  I almost always lightly feather all edges detected w. "Detect Edges".
Try to avoid relying on "Detect Edges".  It is needed much less than commonly thought, imho.  (Any draftsman could tell you this.  We perceive with our brains, and our brains are massively motivated completion machines.  You are generally better off under-specifying an edge and letting the viewer "find it", than over-specifying it and bringing attention to it.)
OP:  Note that almost every Adjustment except "Exposure" can be brushed on/brushed off, and that there are separate Quick Brushes for each of the four slider-controls in the Enhance Brick.

  • Eraser brush for radial  or graduated filter like in PSCC Camera Raw?

Does anyone know if we are going to get an eraser brush for radial  or graduated filter like in PSCC Camera Raw or why not? I thought the camera raw engines were supposed to be the same with the same tools.

Lightroom will likely, eventually, get the new Radial/Graduated filter brushes but very likely not before LR 6.0.  The developing engine under the hood are the same and Lightroom is capable of reading and rendering any of the ACR 8.6 filter brushes. The interfaces and tool sets have always had small discrepancies.
Example: Anyone using ACR can tell you about the Color Sampler tool that has been in Camera Raw for sometime but never been in Lightroom.
