Grain Reduction

I'm one of what appears to be thousands of people who have had trouble with grainy video. I know the best solution is to re-shoot, but I don't have time. I've been all over these boards (and others) trying to find the second-best solution. I've read that the 3-way Color Corrector in FCP can help. I've read that plug-ins such as CHV and Nattress are good. And I've read that the Grain Reduction FX in Color can work. My ideal solution is not to spend any money, but not being very proficient with Color yet (and without time to learn before this project needs to be complete), I haven't had a lot of success using it. The CHV demo seems to work the best for me. I want to know what YOU think is the best of the bunch. Is it worth it to spend the money or is it possible to get similar results as CHV using Color or FCP's color corrector?

GRAIN IS ONLY CAUSED REALLY BY FILM. NOT SURE IF YOU ARE USING FILM AND THEN WORKING OFF OF THE FILM TRANSFER TAPE MASTERS. IF YOU ARE USING A VIDEO CAMERA. WELL THEN IT IS REALLY NOISE NOT GRAIN THAT YOU MIGHT BE SEEING. YES I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU DON'T WANT TO SPEND THE MONEY ON PLUGGINS. SPECIALLY WHEN YOU MIGHT USE THEM JUST FOR GRAIN/NOISE REDUCTION. THE ONES YOU MENTIONED ARE GOOD. THEY ARE REALLY JUST SOFTENING THE IMAGE. IN FCP YOU SHOULD TRY THE GRAIN OR NOISE REDUCTION FILTER. YOU WON'T BELIEVE HOW POWERFUL THEY MIGHT BE. AND JUST FOR THE LITTLE REDUCTION YOU MIGHT BE WANTING. ITS FREE ITS ON YOUR SYSTEM ALREADY AND COULD PROBABLY MAKE A HUGH DIFFERENCE. NEXT TIME JUST REALLY TAKE THE TIME TO SET UP THE EXPOSURES. IT REALLY COMES DOWN TO HOW THE ORIGINAL CAMERA MASTERS ARE EXPOSED. GIVE IT A SHOOT AND CREATE GREAT MATERIAL

  • Is There A Noise Reduction Plug-in For FCP?

Wondering if I could find a plug-in for FCP5 or Color that will reduce the noise shot with high ISO in low light. Does anyone have a suggestion. Thanks!

I have found the 'Noise Reduction' in the CHV repair collection for FCP to be the best out of anything that I have ever tried. The noise reduction is fantastic and the sharpness loss is the best out everything I have seen.

The default settings can be a little excessive, I almost always end up with a setting of 10 and 15 regardless of the footage.
Also, you can try grain reduction inside of colour - pair it with a vignette and alpha blend to limit it to specific areas.

  • Problem with bizarre frames in color

Okay, color is working great for me or the most part. However.
On certain situations, (and I've been unable to nail down exact combinations yet) .. such as if I add a secondary, or two secondaries.. and then add a color effect like grain reduction.. then the output suddenly gets a weird green bar on the right and bottom of the image.. it looks like digital noise, but it renders like that out to final cut as well..
If i take the grain reduction off, then it goes away.. then sometimes with other combinations I"ll get those weird green, sometimes white.. bars on the right and bottom of the image..
    help?

I just saw this yesterday. I also noted if I turned off one of the secondaries the problem went away, and returned when I enabled it again. Then I went into User settings and toggled the bit depth from float and back again. The purple bar disappeared and stayed away.
Maybe a sign of a needed shut down / startup? I don't know.
Did you have FCP open at the same time? I was switching back and forth since I was making tweaks to my corrections. Don't know if that might be related. But I have noticed FCP and Color don't share the video card very well and since Color is so GPU-reliant...

  • Grainy Preview

    Hey all,
I have a decent understanding of after effects but mainly use it to create timelapse. Over the past 6 months I have probably put through over 200 timelapse sequences so I'm kind of stumped as to why I'm having this problem all of a sudden. I have a raw image sequence that I am trying to bring in and the preview is extremely grainy. It almost looks like the grain of the image(I did shoot at 800 iso) is being amplified quite a bit. Not sure why this is happening but some brief research led me to believe it might be an opencl issue with my laptop.  The cr2, rendered jpegs from lightroom, and final video seem to be ok but if I want to denoise any of my footage in after effects I have no idea of knowing how much to put on there and would like to rectify for future projects.

I have tried importing as 32 bit, and a few other things but I've never really seen this before. Even when the ACR screen comes up on import it all looks dandy so I'm not sure what could be going on.

I noticed that you have not scaled your images to a standard size. Your comp is 5000 + pixels wide. Way too big for final delivery unless you're going for Imax projectors.
I'd do that in Photoshop with batch processing features before I did much elce. You'll get much better resizing outside AE than inside.
As far as grain reduction goes it's all a matter of taste. Grain reduction is not fast rendering so, again, you are going to be much better off if you size your image sequences so that at some point in your final project the images are somewhere close to 100% scale. It's also very important to judge any grain or noise reduction while viewing your comp at 100% scale and best quality.

  • Grainy HD Footage.

didn't provide enough light in some scenes.
Can somebody give me a recipe using filters on final cut pro where i could decrease the grainy look and make it almost clear?
    thanks.

Nattress has the best grain reduction plug-ins, they work really super well, and you can hardly see any blur. Also, I've been having tremendous success with brightening up underexposed footage with Color, when used properly. Problem is, most folks will jump into Color, a very easy app to learn, but not understand how color work is actually done professinoally.
Nattress for noise, Color for brightening up underexposed footage. Used together, you can do amazing things. I know I do it every day.

  • Grain/Noise disappear while making adjustments in ACR

Can someone help me wrap my head around this? When making an adjustment using, for example, a luminance slider,(Hue Sat Lum dialog), in ACR, Noise and Grain disappear during the adjustment only to return after releasing the left click button. This makes it very difficult to get a real time feel for adjustments. More like trial and error. I haven't noticed this before. I've been running CS5 on win7 with a dedicated 500gb scratch disk. I work primarily with Raw files. The appearance during the adjustment resembles having cranked the luminance or masking, (in the sharpening/noise reduction dialog), way up. It may be that this is most prevalent when working on  an image that has been significantly cropped.
    Thank you...

    greeting

Dark areas have less bits to encode their values so a single bit of noise is a higher proportion of the total value.
For the basis of the default processing, to match the human eye’s response to dark and light, darker areas are brightened more than bright areas, using a non-linear gamma curve.  This magnifies the noise in darker areas.
If you boost the brightness of dark areas using Shadows or Clarity, you are making that noise even more visible.   Think of brightening as digitally increasing the ISO.
Adobe’s noise-reduction is calibrated to the original photo’s ISO setting, not how much you have digitally increased the ISO by brightening it, so if you have magnified the noise by extreme processing, you may be beyond what maxing out the NR sliders are calibrated to remove.
Exporting sharpening will sharpen any remaining noise.
Are you using the Mask slider in sharpen to keep from sharpening the noise grain in the Detail section?  Use the Alt key while moving the mask slider to determine the optimal Mask level for a particular photo, where you can’t to have the edges indicated but not the wide areas of little detail.
It’s hard to guess what you’re seeing without seeing a screenshot.

Thanks for the tip. My problem with blurring in Lr is that the blurred region ends up "too clean" (the rest of the photo has at least a bit of noise in it). I have dealt with it in the past by applying grain to the blurred region using an external editor - but that takes a lot of the fun out of doing the blur in Lightroom.

  • In-camera noise reduction

This question is directed to the technically knowledgeable out there and has to do with in-camera noise reduction settings. Although I'm shooting with a 1D4, I would guess the same would apply to all models. In a nutshell, is in-camera noise reduction (assuming it's enabled) applied to RAW files or just to JPEGs? If it's applied to RAW files (which is all I shoot), have any of you shot RAW with noise reduction disabled, and if so, how were the results? I tried to do a search here on this topic but was unable to find any information. Thanks.

No, with all due respects, it is Long Exposure NR. Why would it make it worst with High ISO if it is "High ISO Noise Reduction".
    6D Manual page: 128 - 129
5D Mark III manual page 144-145
"Images taken at ISO 1600 or higher may look grainier with the [Enable] setting than with the [Disable] and [Auto] setting"
With Auto setting, camera will not do LENR if the ISO is higher than 1600.
I've tested this and it's give many kind of artifact with high ISO from time to time. Others it just gives more noise.
    Hi,
    - Great to know, thanks! It's very surprising indeed.
LENR is supposed to remove hot pixels and noise due to long exposure. It's (sadly) surprising the in-cameras LENR may be worse than in post...
We'll take a review about it , since shooting long exposure at higher than ISO 1600 is not uncommon for astro photography.
I think 5D Mark 2 didn't have this "problem". Will check that too.
    - The manual tells that in-camera High ISO NR applied is lower at high ISO than the NR that can be applied in post, not "worse", sorry, my mistake.
    Thanks once again.
EDIT: The User manual of 5D Mark 2 doesn't tell anything about this matter. The manual of 7D does, as well as 6D and 5D3 as you mentioned.
Since I used to work with 5D2 I didn't realize the 5D3 could be different. Or at least the manual of 5D2 doesn't say the final result of LENR at 1600 or higher could be worse. Good thing to keep in mind.
Sitll doesn't understand why the result "may" be worse, the 5D3 has enormous computing potential with the Digic 5+
This seems to only affect if  LENR is set to "ON" / "Enabled", not to "Auto". Very likely a more agressive NR is applied in such case.
    We'll carry some test indeed.
    EDIT 2:
In just brief tests with the 5D Mark 3 we found some inconsistency on the results between setting Long Exposure NR to "OFF", "Auto" & "On".
We set High ISO NR, Peripheral Illumination Correction and Chromatic Aberrations to OFF, to see only the effect of LENR in JPG (not RAW yet).
This camera (5D3) applies High ISO NR even when you set it to OFF (very noticeable in video mode).
At ISO 6400 we didn't see a hot /stuck pixel (even when LENR set to "OFF") that appears at ISO 3200 when setting LENR to OFF or Auto. Of course "ON" deletes all hot /stuck pixels, but also increaed grain.
We all already know that the more the sensor heats up (shooting and shooting long exposure stills - or using Live View for stills or video), the more noise we'll get in the pictures (and video).
So far we couldn't get a "rule". Sometimes the "Auto" works better than "ON", it seems it depends on the selected ISO value and how hot is the sensor too.
I pesonally don't understand WHY the LENR delivers more grainy images when set to "ON", if the NR is more agressive the grain should be finer than in "OFF" or "Auto", so it doesn't make sense...
We'll test the 5D Mark 2 to compare with 5D3 in this regard

  • ACR 6.0 Grain Question?

I am a professional fine art landscape print maker.  My question is about adding grain in ACR 6.0.  I do most work in ACR with some capture sharpening there, a touch of color noise reduction and no luminance noise reduction (all images are ideally exposed at very low ISO).  I then do fine tuning in PS (now CS5).  Speed of workflow is of no concern.  Quality is the highest concern.  I interpolate using Bicubic Smoother (lets not argue about that...).  I make very large high end laser (light-jet) silver halide (flex) super gloss prints.  After interpolation, the last major step in my workflow is always extremely advanced custom sharpening.  I am just starting to get into adding grain, and will be doing test prints shortly.
    The question(s):
It does not seem like the best time to add grain (in ACR 6.0) considering my workflow.  It seems that the best time might be after interpolation, and right after the sharpening.  Why would I add grain that would then be interpolated considerably, and then sharpened?  Is sharpening digital "grain" a ideal way to develop an image?  If my intuition is right here (maybe I am wrong) maybe a trip back to ACR with the giant finished, sharpened, TIFF would be a good idea?  Or is the grain making abilities of PS (CS5) as good or better than ACR 6.0?  Maybe I am way off on when the best time to add grain to my workflow is?
    Thanks!

I posted this a long time back, and now that I have done quite a few jobs (landscape
galley prints for myself and other clients -  I do photo retouching professionally) I have to say that I really like the grain simulation in ACR.  Once the enlargement is finished, sharpened and all that, I make a copy of it (Tiff) and send it through ACR and add the desired grain texture.
I just finished a 70" landscape for a client (on FujiFlex poly paper using the Oce Lightjet) at 200 ppi.  I used ACR grain on a layer at Amount 500, Size 18, and Roughness at 35.  Then once that grain layer was in Photoshop as a layer, I graduated it into the scene at about a 30-40% opacity to meet the images needs (of mainly disguising artifacts and creating an illusion of more fine detail but not creating a "graininess" look to the image) and erased it from the sky entirely. I viewed the image mainly at 50% but would also do some evaluation at 100%.  Having the luxury of being a professional photo retoucher and having a clients images going to gallery almost daily has really allowed me to experiment with both PS grain and ACR grain techniques, and I can say I am impressed with ACR (as I always am).

  • 1.5.2/1.5.3 Adding Grain to image (bug!)

    Morning all,
Found a nasty little bug in the way Aperture creates the image being made ready for editing with the external editor (in this case PS2).
A screengrab of the issue can be found at http://danielcuthbert.com/grain.jpg.
The image to the left is a drum scanned tif file, with NO grain, yet when you go through the motions of editing with the external editor option, grain is introduced and not in a nice manner.
I've turned off noise reduction, but this has got me confused as why the grain is being added
    thoughts?

I only remember a lot of things are not loaded (most of my program coding classes?) which doesn't make sense to me since everything loaded well with other version. I will test later on and post the the error message here. thank you

  • Noise reduction not working on Lightroom 5.4 MAC

I have experienced that the noise reduction that I apply to my pictures is only visible in the develop area of the software. As I switch to library it disappear and the same happen if I export the picture in any kind of format.
I post a screenshot where you can see a sample picture with the desired noise reduction applied (on the right) and the same picture as it shows in the library area (on the left). Switching between this two areas (library and develop) results like a noise reduction toggle.
    Dropbox - example.tiff
Is there a way to solve this bug?
    Thank you.

Usually Develop-Fit view is crispier than Library or Export, when there has been enough noise-reduction added to an image to make it seem smooth, and people complain that sharpening is not being applied; however, in this situation through extreme noise-reduction settings, an artificial coarse texture has replaced the fine-grained noise which seems to manifest differently in Develop Fit view, and the complaint is that Library has no NR applied.
In more detail, there are two issues, here, both of the user's doing, not LR's:
    1)  A user-expectation that the Develop non-1:1 zoom is accurate regarding Detail settings.  It is not.  For years there has been an exclamation-point warning on the Detail settings section that says to view things only at 1:1.  If a user doesn't see or ignores this warning then their expectation is wrong, as in this situation.
    2)  The Luminance Noise-Reduction Detail slider has been increased from the default of 50 to the maximum of 100.  This has the effect of converting the fine-grain noise into a course angular texture, which is easily visible at reduced sizes except in the inaccurate Develop Fit view.
In the following side-by-side at 1:1 zoom, the lefthand panel is as per the user settings with the Lum-NR-Detail slider set to 100, while the righthand side has the Lum-NR-Detail slider set at the default of 50, with all other user settings remaining the same:
I would summarize what is occurring not as a bug but a different response of the inaccurate Develop-Fit rendering to a different coarseness of noise that is caused by an extreme setting of the Lum-NR-Detail slider.  Since there is no resizing and no sharpening in the Export settings, I don't think the 1/3 bug has anything to do with anything.
It would be nice for the original poster (OP) to describe exactly what is wrong, after knowing that the Develop view is in accurate if not viewed at 1:1.
