Grainy results when converting CR2 to JPEG

I'm processing raw images (.cr2) that have been taken under low light conditions.  Originals in raw don't exhibit as much grain as the conversions to jpg.
Is there an way to minimise the problem?

Sorry, ACR = Adobe Camera Raw. How are you converting these files, then?
Just size the image down for the forum, or include screenshots of sample areas instead.
Oh right !
I'm opening the raw image with control/alt/o then adjusting for best picture before opening in PSE9 & saving as JPG format.  Saving as maximum quality "12".
Actually - and I hope I haven't sent you all on a wild goose chase - the noise problem was introduced when I uploaded my 9MB photo to FaceBook and was subsequently reduced in size by them. It rather sounds like it's FaceBook's conversion that's let me down!
Here's the problem - before uploading to FaceBook, and after... (and, yes, I know the original isn't perfect due to low light!)..

  • Grainy output when converting cr2 to JPEG in Photoshop CS5

Output JPEG becomes grainy whenever I am converting cr2 file to JPEG. Please help me with solution.

If the box beside Run Action is not checked, then you don't have any actions running when the Image Processor runs
and you probably don't want the Run Action box checked unless you want to do some adjustments to all the processed images
The name of the action can be any one that is loaded in the actions panel in cs5 and not always Image Effects.
Sometimes one has that checked and forgets about it and wonders why processed images are turning out strange.

  • When converting RAW to Jpegs in Batch converstion, I'm getting 2 copies of everyone.  Why??

When converting RAW to Jpegs in Batch converstion, I'm getting 2 copies of everything.  Why??

Oops, so you did. I must have been on auto-pilot
I don't have any of those tracks in my library so I can't tell you that any of them work for me. If Genius works overall then it's probably a matter of sampling a critical mass of playlists that already contain those songs, for it then to be able to suggest suitable "mixes". I've not tried to get to grips with the mechanism behind Genius but I'd guess it works something along these lines. Your library gets inspected and some kind of summary gets uploaded to a server which integrates data from lots of users, and then gives you some back. Perhaps the process just does take time.

  • Grainy Image when converting from PAL to NTSC...

    Hi,
I'm using Compressor 2.0.1 to convert a PAL movie to NTSC. I find that the output is extremely Grainy, the blacs are Muddy and the Highlights are colored.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks and Regards,
    Rajnesh

There are many options when converting from PAL to NTSC with Compressor's Frame Controls panel. Have you tried other settings? Note, however, that the highest quality settings are pretty slow so be prepared for a fairly long wait even on your Power Mac G5.
Otherwise, you might want to try the freeware utility JES Deinterlacer (available on VersionTracker.com). JES Deinterlacer is pretty fast at PAL <-> NTSC conversion and the results are better than you will get with the basic settings in Compressor 2.

  • Unwatchtable results when converting to H.264 (MPEG Streamclip 1.8)

I converted several movies to H.264 a year ago using an older version of MPEG Streamclip, using the exact same settings (H.264, 720x576, 25 fps, 2400 kbps). These movies play fine on the atv. Movies that I recently converted, using MPEG Streamclip 1.8 and newer versions of QT (whatever the current version is) no longer play correctly on the atv. These newer conversions flicker green and really have no dicernable picture. The atv attempts to play the content (no error message), but the displayed picture is just a torn up mess. These newer conversions play fine on the Mac
(in iTunes or QT Player). Does anyone know what's wrong or how to work around this problem?
    Thanks.

    Codec: H.264
    Size: 720x576
    Bitrate: 300 KBps
    Quality: 100%
I stored this settings about 2 years ago as a preset. These settings do lot look right. If saved 2 years ago with a data rate of 300 Kbps, this should have been an iPod preset (likely for a 320 x 240) or possibly quarter PAL display dimensions "Baseline" profile. (I.e., roughly half the recommended iPod setting but a setting likely good for web use.) Baseline, files, despited their low data rate, would have been iPod compatible then and TV compatible now.
As I said before, the resulting movies all work fine on the atv except the very latest.Actually, in your original post, the settings you gave look more like they are for a PAL "Main" profile if you are using 720 x 576 dimensions and a data rate of 2400 Kbps. The problem is if your are using the "Baseline Low Complexity" profile, then this file will likely be trapped by iTunes as not be within acceptable "LC" profile specifications and I would assume not sync with either iPod or TV devices. On the other hand, if you are using the "Main" profile, then the file should be TV compatible but not iPod compatible.
I believe, unlike Handbrake, MPEG Streamclip uses Apple's H.264 Codec. The MPEG Streamclip default is H.264, but MPEG-4 is also available if you select it. However, even the MPEG-4 codec was originally limited to 900 macro-16 blocks back then -- usually assigned as a 480 x 480 display encode matrix. This was increased to 1200 macro-16 blocks when the "Low Complexity" H.264 format was introduced for MPEG-4 640 x 480 compatibility. However, even now, according to Apple, the MPEG-4 "Simple" profile is limited to 1215 macro-16 blocks or a 720 x 432 display encode matrix -- not 720 x 576.
I'm going to attempt to compress something with the Quicktime Pro tool as a comparision.Suggest you run your tests using H.264 "Main" profile at originally posted settings, switch to "LC" compatible H.264 dimensions/data rates, or use MPEG-4 at stated data rate but using compatible dimensions (e.g., 16:9 aspect ratio 720 x 400 display which is equivalent to a compatible 1125 macro-16 blocks).

  • Garbled result when converting MS Word doc to pdf.

I am on a PC running XP professional using Word 2003 and Acrobat Pro (CS3) v.8.
Recently, after converting a variety of MS Office documents successfully from Acrobat Pro v8 with updates applied, I can no longer successfully convert these files. The converted documents are a jumble of symbols and characters. They look somewhat like a postscript file printed on a non-postscript printer.
All the programs have been re-installed and the problem still exists. Does anyone have any suggestions to solve this problem. I have tried converting them through Word and Acrobat Pro with no luck.
    HELP!

The only problem I have now is printing acrobat 4 pdf files through Mozilla Firefox Vers. 3.0.1. Acrobat 7 reader is also installed and IE 7 prints the pdfs just fine. I also printed pdfs through some local apps I use just to be sure the problem is possibly isolated to a call through Mozilla Browser versus anything else. As I recall, I also had this problem prior to Mozilla and XPSP3 upgrades. So now I just print through through IE, as a workaround.
I do not have MS Word installed...yet, but do have Open Office installed, so for the moment my problem is solved.
    Hope this helps.

  • Hidden file when converting from raw to jpeg. How to delete this?

I just found out that when converting raw into jpeg in Photoshop there is a hidden file enclosed starting with ._ Computers don't see them but televisions do. I discovered this because I want to show a batch of my images on a television with a usb of a sd card. It shows my images and after each normal image I get a black image with a questionmark. It says 'cannot read this file' and it shows the name of the image but with a ._ in front of it. For instance garden.jpg and then -_garden.jpg. Computers don't read images starting with ._ but televisions seem to do so. I want to delete these ._ images because I cannot show a slide show of my images on a television. Anyone can help? It seems that this hidden file is incorporated into the jpeg file.
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks. I have thought of this solution but these files are not showing when I set it this way. I had a specialist helping me to find this problem and he was very surprised that these hidden files didn't show up in his special program for showing hidden information. Only when going deeper and deeper into this program these files showed on his computer. As they are incorporated into the original file (the jpeg version) you don't seem to be able to delete them. What do people do when they want to show (jpeg converted from raw)images on their tv?
I have a Mac if that helps.

  • Best results when changing RGB to CMYK

    Hi There,
How can I get the best results when converting a RGB to CMYK? For example, a tif visual when offset printing... Is there any programme, plug in, machine for this?
    Many thanks

    I agree with Marco U.
I might have said: only use Perceptual if an extremely important color in a photo changes terribly using Relative Colorimetric -- otherwise use that. The reason: The former method can make the whole picture shift (usually yellower and weaker) but the latter can make several distinctly different colors (like 3-5 different reds for example) and make them the same. Usually, one or two really strong colors can get shifted somewhat, but won't be noticeable in an otherwise great looking image.
The secret to converting for good print color is to choose the source and target correctly.
If you are serious about color, buy the book "Real World Color Management" by Bruce Fraser, Chris Murphy and Fred Bunting.
    http://www.amazon.com/Real-World-Color-Management-2nd/dp/0321267222/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF 8&s=books&qid=1198178251&sr=1-1
Sadly, Bruce Fraser passed away, so the book may not go to a third edition. But you can still get the second edition and the first 5 or 6 chapters are an education in themselves.

  • Converting cr2 files to jpeg files...

How do you convert several cr2 files to jpegs in lightroom?

You don't really "convert" the files to JPEG.  Those raw files are your master images that you continually maintain in Lightroom.  When you need a JPEG copy you use the export function in Lightroom to export a JPEG copy that includes all of the adjustments that you have made in Lightroom.

You can use Adobe's free DNG converter to convert proprietary raws to the universal DNG raw format. Here are the links:
Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows : Adobe DNG Converter 9.0
Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Macintosh : Adobe DNG Converter 9.0
Converting to JPEG will be an extra step afterwards.

Perfectly Clear is a 3rd party commercial plugin for Lightroom.

  • When I import Nikon NEF photos from my D3S, it automatically converts them to jpeg. How can I fix this?

When I import RAW photos from my D3S, iPhoto automatically converts them to jpeg.  I want to edit my images in a RAW format.  I used to be able to save my images as a NEF in iPhoto and edit them in RAW on Photoshop.   Can this be fixed, or do I have to find a new software to manage my RAW photos?

RAW files are just sensor dumps of the raw data and can't be viewed unless a jpeg version is created. The jpeg version of the photo is created by iPhoto for display purposes.
Make sure Photoshop is set as the external editor in iPhoto's Advanced preference pane and that RAW files are edited when using the external editor.
You do know that when editing a RAW photos with Photoshop from within iPhoto the edited version must be saved to the Desktop and imported into iPhoto as a new file.

When converting an image from raw to jpeg , the jpeg can look flat compared to the original raw image . Is there any way to prevent this ?

Hi Joe , Thank you for your quick response . I am viewing the jpeg in Microsoft Picture Manager and Flickr. It 's not always really noticeable , but for example if I shoot into the light with dew on the grass , the dew glistens in LRoom and I'm happy with the shot but when I convert it to jpeg ,it looks dull. I have changed the setting to sRGB - from Adobe 1998 ,but don't see much difference.  Kind regards   Alberto.

HHi Barbara, thanks for replying to my post.
No there's nothing wrong with the Jpegs, but I want to srart uploading images for sale in Alamy, but they say they must be a minimum of 17mb un compressed. Does that mean that at 6mb compressed from 90mb they'd be acceptable?
